"What's a Solar Eclipse?"

"What's a New Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience CANCER energy in your life.

This Solar Eclipse is visible in the South Pacific and southern South America. DO NOT look directly at a Solar Eclipse or you could damage your eyes.

Busy, busy, busy. A nurturer's work is never done!

The chart for this New Moon – indeed, a Solar Eclipse – in Cancer is a very busy one! In fact, you might find you are busy minding your own business, occupied by taking care of your everyday life, while the skies seem to vibrate and storm around you with the Battle of the Titans!

The sign of Cancer is concerned with nurturing – building the nest that will provide the growth foundation for longer-term development. This could apply to children, a project, a creative venture or a mission of cultivating some form of well-being.

Cancer is a Cardinal sign, meaning that it is action oriented. It has a goal in mind and is doing what needs to be done to ensure that this goal has every chance of succeeding. Cancer's contribution to the Cardinal agenda is to create the foundation upon which the result (in Capricorn) will rest.

To anyone who prefers to focus on final results, this background preparation work might seem lacklustre. However, as Abraham Lincoln (whose Moon was in Capricorn) once said: "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." Preparation is everything! Preparation can determine the success or failure of the outcome.

In western culture (as well as others), we tend to focus on the Capricornian results and undervalue the Cancerian foundation work. This has become entrenched in our society's sexism. Men who have traditionally worked "out in the world" have been revered as valuable and important. Women who worked in the home feathering the nest where tomorrow's adults were growing were historically regarded as far less important and given a low status. Thankfully this has started to change in recent decades.

As if reflecting the traditional imbalance of power, the Sun-Moon conjunction in Cancer is sextile (60°) to Mars in Virgo, and these planets have no other major aspects to the other planets. The rest of the chart consists largely of transpersonal planets in close dynamic aspects to each other. It's almost reminiscent of the old order of things, where the Mommies worked tirelessly behind the scenes in the home on everyday tasks, while the Daddies went out and did "important" things in the world where they received awards, paychecks and other forms of recognition.

Therefore, in present day, it might be tempting to feel small, insignificant, invisible or powerless in your own little corner of the world, when there are such huge, ginormous, larger-than-life issues raging like cosmic storms around you. These could be global issues that lie beyond the reach of personal control. For example: the Deepwater Horizon oil "spill," or the continuing controversy about the police tactics at the recent G20 World Summit, or the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that seem to have no end in sight. On the other hand, you might feel overwhelmed by conflicts, controversies or crises in your own life that, although happening on a personal level, feel out of control and beyond your grasp.

There is no shortage of aspect configurations in the Solar Eclipse chart, starting with the Cardinal Cross. ("What's the Cardinal Cross?Read more about how to work with the Cardinal Cross energies.)

Hele aspect pattern

One intriguing aspect pattern is often called a Hele, or also called a Trawler by the Hubers in their excellent book, Aspect Pattern Astrology. This oblong figure features a bit of everything – quincunxes (150°) and trines (120°), plus a semi-sextile (30°) at the narrow end and a square (90°) at the wide end.

The square is formed by Jupiter-Uranus square to Pluto, which is a very transpersonal component of the Cardinal Cross. At the other end is Mercury in Leo semi-sextile to Venus in Virgo – planetary energies that are much more accessible to us on a personal level. In other words, the Hele describes our personal efforts to grapple with, resolve and work with this dynamic transpersonal planetary aspect.

With Mercury and Venus in both trine and quincunx aspect to the squared planets, there is both ambiguity and willingness about how to work with these larger energies. The creative potential in this figure is considerable, even massive. This is especially true when that creativity comes as an expression of your Higher Self through your personal self (Mercury in Leo), as well as when it is channelled into a practical or specific focus (Venus in Virgo).

However, with those quincunxes and the semi-sextile, there isn't likely to be much in the way of clear, definite resolutions or "answers" to the struggles contained in this aspect figure. In a way, it challenges you to reach out to the vast potential that is generated from conflict and to trust your creative intuition about how to put it to use. Think of it as taking the heat that is produced by friction and using it to bake a cake or thaw out something that's frozen. This is raw potential that can be used for creative purposes.

Irritation Rectangle aspect pattern

Another intriguing aspect figure is something the Hubers called an Irritation Rectangle. It consists of a oblong box made of quincunxes (150°) and semi-sextiles (30°), with the corners joined by oppositions (180°). In this case, Chiron-Neptune is opposite Venus and Jupiter-Uranus is opposite Saturn. In general, this figure is mentally stimulating and gives mental stability and expanding awareness, but its boxy nature can also become rigid and defensive.

In this case, there is a great desire for idealistic vision and creative excellence (Venus to Chiron-Neptune), while also striving to bring extremes into balance (Saturn to Jupiter-Uranus). There is the potential to appear flexible on the surface while actually being immovable underneath, although the inner tension can also lead you to gather more information and learning to relieve the stress. The trick here is to find the balance that works well for you, while using the experience to expand your philosophical side.

The fact that this is taking place at a Solar Eclipse just amplifies all of the above! It also extends the overall effects for at least a couple of years. If your chart is being transited directly by the eclipse, you are likely to feel like there's something vast, magnificent and powerful happening in your life. For example if your birthday lands roughly between July 7-15, then this eclipse is affect your Sun – your central sense of purpose and identity – and might even be in your Solar Return chart for the coming 12 months! Or you may have other planets in your chart that are interacting directly with the eclipse.

The challenge is to figure out how to connect with and work with this larger-than-life energy in more accessible, personal ways, using the energies of the planet that's affected. I'm available for personal readings where we can explore ways for you to tap into the powerful potential of both the Solar Eclipse and the Cardinal Cross, and use them in creative ways.

Jul.13 – Venus trine Pluto (03:39 of Virgo/Capricorn) Jul.14 in AU

Close one-on-one connections with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) will tend to gravitate to a deeper, more intense level now. Instead of automatically doing the diplomatic, "nice" thing, you may find it is more fulfilling to share more of your authentic feelings. It may be possible now to connect with people on a deeper level, while still ensuring that your interests are equally balanced with theirs. The trick is to do this without trying to control or overpower the other person, and it may be easier to avoid those traps now. You could make some deeply intimate connections with people under this transit. Financial dealings with other people may also go smoothly, although it might be wise to get clear confirmation that you're both on the same page about the fine print.

Jul.20 – Chiron retrograde enters Aquarius (until Feb.08.2011)

Chiron, the Wounded Healer, brings his healing process to our experience of groups, community, friends and how we establish and maintain our individuality within these areas. While Chiron returns briefly to Aquarius, you have the opportunity to find a new balance between the urge to reflexively rebel against the establishment and the need to be clear on what you really stand for and what causes are truly meaningful to you. Take stock of the ideals, visions, hopes and dreams that aren’t working for you anymore versus the ones that are. It’s time to shed the deadwood and liberate what’s left. This can bring you into a new awareness of what it is to be and feel alienated. You can bring healing to that condition that already exists in your life, as well as develop an appreciation and compassion for others who have been disenfranchised from the mainstream. It may also be a time when you will need to go your own way, separate from the mainstream, in order to preserve and heal your sense of individuality and autonomy.

This is the last time Chiron will be in Aquarius for another 50 years. Any unfinished business you might have with your healing process with groups, friends, technology or future dreams are best taken care of before February when Chiron returns to Pisces to stay.

Jul.21 – Saturn enters Libra (until Oct.05.2012) Jul.22 in AU

Saturn returns to Libra after doing the final clean-up in Virgo before vacating the premises. From now until 2012, Saturn moves through the Air sign of Libra. Saturn develops, manifests and structures whatever it encounters. In Libra, these actions are applied to fairness, balance, relationships, partnerships and objective reflection. Although Saturn often has a reputation for being a wet blanket over whatever it touches, it is actually very comfortable in Libra and said to be "exalted" – think of it like being a guest of honour. Saturn is therefore capable of bringing calm rationality to a situation requiring fairness, or stability to the need for balance, or lasting commitment to relationships.

But of course, Saturn is still Saturn and it still has its difficult side. That calm rationality for fairness could also seem like cold objectivity in which there is no room for human emotion or shortcomings. The stability it brings to harmony and balance could tend to eliminate the highs and lows that make life interesting, exciting and engaging. And commitment in a relationship doesn't guarantee the relationship will work, so it's wise to carefully consider what and whom you're committing yourself to.

If you were born roughly between 1921-24, 1950-53 or 1980-83, you were probably born under Saturn in Libra. That means two things: (1) you live with this energy all the time and (2) you will be going to go through a Saturn Return sometime in the next two years. Saturn Return is when Saturn returns to the same sign and degree as it was when you were born. It is a pivotal time of life that happens about every 29 years. It is a powerful rite of passage that initiates a process of restructuring of your life and challenges you to redefine and reinvent who you are.

If you were born roughly between 1908-1911, 1937-40, 1967-69 or 1996-99, you were probably born while Saturn was in the opposite sign of Aries. That means you will be going through the Saturn Opposition sometime in the next two years. Saturn Opposition is when Saturn reaches the opposite sign of the zodiac from where it was when you were born. It represents a time when the changes that began at the Saturn Return start to emerge and crystallize, and you shift from developing a new life to actually living it and making it work.

If you are going through either of these major transits over the next two years, or if you have natal planets or points in Libra, you can benefit enormously from a personal reading. I can help you understand how this pivotal time of transition is unfolding in your life and discover your best course through this turning point in your life. Jul.22 – Sun enters Leo (until Aug.23) Jul.23 in AU

Happy Solar Return to all Leos! Today the Sun moves into its own sign, so its radiant energy is extra bright during this time. Leo's focus is on identity, individuality, self-esteem, creativity, self-expression and fun. You can benefit by rejuvenating, revitalising and rekindling the fiery spirit of who you are. Celebrate your existence! Do something that reminds you about who you are. Recharge your batteries and do things that help you return to the centre of the orbiting circumstances in your life – not spinning around at the edges where you feel at the mercy of everything around you. What are you doing (or what do you want to do) in your life that express the passions that move you? What is the focus of your sense of purpose in life, and what is your next step in moving toward that? If you've been feeling like you're stuck or have lost your sense of purpose, do something that uplifts you. If you could do anything with your life that you wanted to, what would it be? And what one thing (even just a small thing) can you do to take a step toward that goal? Rejuvenate your sense of self and do things that help you to just BE who you are. Hang out with children and watch how they play and are spontaneously free. Find ways to connect to your joyful Inner Child. Celebrate your existence!

Jul.22 – Sun sextile Saturn (00:06 of Leo/Libra) Jul.23 in UK, AU

You have an opportunity now to make some progress in obtaining results in your projects, career, ambitions and creative expression. It is possible to tap into a disciplined mindset, which can be used to take some steps toward goals that you're trying to manifest. You are surrounded by potential to achieve this, although it will not simply be handed to you – you will still have to work for it. Your mind and purpose are likely to be clear and strong now, enabling you to be decisive and productive. Leadership, management and organizing abilities are potentially high right now. Asserting your authority in a situation that calls for it can be done successfully, as long as you don't let yourself become rigid or bossy. It can be a good time to learn or practice new skills, or to apply yourself to any kind of serious study. It is also a time when you could formulate some solid plans for future projects or make some progress with current undertakings. Make the most of it!

Jul.23 – Sun trine Uranus (00:28 of Leo/Aries)

You are more open than usual to spontaneity, surprises and "flying by the seat of your pants!" Your sense of humour and fun are let loose during this transit, as is your ability to break out of old outworn habits. You may get a flash of insight, a burst of courage or a surge of inspiration under this transit. The spirit of who you are can become released now, possibly leading to you behaving a bit "out of character." It's a great time to try new things and experiment with something that's out of character for you. In fact, it may be surprising how easy it is to break out of your usual routine...so much so, that it's good to be careful not to be too reckless under this transit. If your self-confidence, self-expression or self-esteem have been stifled or dampened lately, these could come flying out rather erratically, carelessly or chaotically. Strive to have fun pushing the envelope without ripping it. ;-)

Jul.23 – Jupiter stationary Retrograde (03:24 of Aries) ("What does Retrograde mean?"  Read article about retrograde planets.)

For up to a week before and after this date (while Jupiter is moving very slowly and stopped during the station), you may experience an increase in idealism, longing or inspiration. Your opinions, beliefs and assumptions may come under question, as your understanding of life and the world around you now requires further study. While Jupiter is retrograde over the next five months, you may have to re-examine your assumptions, attitudes, biases and judgments about one or more situations. It can be a time to gather more knowledge and look at things from a different perspective, which can change your interpretation of events. Right now at the station there is the turning point, which might inspire you to explore already-known territory in a new way, or it could disrupt your journey because your map of the territory isn't accurate or up-to-date. This especially applies to situations that have been developing in the last three months (since Jupiter entered the shadow). Allow yourself to be open to new possibilities emerging gradually out of old situations. There is a deeper understanding that can result from exploring things from a different perspective and questioning what you think you know. That which is known and familiar may seem strangely irrelevant or foreign for a while, yet will eventually become integrated and understood again after Jupiter goes direct in five months.

Jul.25 – Jupiter square Pluto (3:23 of Aries/Capricorn)  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

Jupiter, the planet of justice and morality, and Pluto, the planet of intensity and power, are glaring suspiciously at each other, circling around and deciding if they should launch into full battle. At best, these two energies will come together to "fight the good fight" against a common enemy, whether that be an honourable principle or the behaviour of a more human adversary. At worst these planets could enter into warfare over the (perceived) tyranny of religious beliefs, the truth about controversial or ambiguous events, or the blame and judgment of enemies who you "just know" are in the wrong. Either way, this conflict might take place inside you, where different beliefs or attitudes are giving you mixed feelings about something, or you might find yourself at loggerheads with someone over differences of opinion. The key is to pick your battles and to do only what's necessary to achieve the result you want. The danger is that what starts out as a conviction to stand up on principle against something you believe is wrong could mushroom into a "scorched earth" crusade against the entire realm of villainy. Some objectivity, compassion and mercy will go a long way to ensure that everyone benefits from the peacetime that will hopefully come out of this.

This is the first of 3 passes of this transit: Jul.25, Aug.03 and Feb.25.2011. The first two passes will actually be in a wider orb from mid-May to late October, 2010, and then from January through March of 2011. At this first pass, you could become aware of a wrong that needs to be righted in the world, which you are inspired to take action about. Alternatively, you could find your own assumptions are being challenged and need to be examined to see if they really fit the situation at hand. It's possible you have outgrown some old beliefs and need to revise your understanding of life. This is a long-term process, so don't smite (what you believe is) your enemy just yet. Wait to see what new information, meaning, understanding and perspective unfolds before you jump to conclusions.

Sabian Symbol for the
Full Moon in Aquarius

Aquarius 3

A deserter from the Navy.

This Sabian Symbol ("What's a Sabian Symbol?") shows a compelling image of something normally seen as shameful – to be a deserter from military duty. However, this symbolic desertion may well feel like the right choice, depending on the circumstances.

The symbol signifies "an irrevocable change in status" (Dane Rudhyar) as a result of "suddenly leaving something behind." (Blain Bovee) It suggests there is something about this Full Moon that urges you to let go of something that isn't working for you anymore.

The Aquarius archetype involves the process of individuation (becoming a separate, self-validating individual). This is different from developing an ego identity (the opposite sign of Leo) where we take on and identify with a particular role or self-image for which we receive applause and approval from those around us.

This symbol suggests you may be required to let go of the security of your ego identity in order to find your own unique path. This might even mean having to let someone down who expects or demands that you to conform to that previous identity, but how you go about doing this could make a difference as to the long-term results.

At its worst, it may warn against breaking away from your present routine or role irresponsibly. The choice to walk a new path doesn't necessarily have to be done callously or cruelly, disregarding the feelings, needs or respect for others. It only means you need to be clear within yourself about your decision to cut the ties that interfere with your new journey.

With the Navy being mentioned, this symbol reminds me of the phrase, "That ship has sailed," meaning an opportunity has been lost; the moment has passed. The opposite of "Your ship has come in." In this symbol's context, it might mean letting go of an opportunity in order to find another one that will take you in a different direction.

"What's a Full Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience AQUARIUS energy in your life.

Here's the thing about Aquarius. As an archetype, it's a bit schizoid.

It's ruled by two totally different planets: Saturn and Uranus. As the saying goes, they're as different as chalk and cheese.

Saturn is all about preserving tradition and the "old order." (It's fitting that Saturn was always the traditional planetary ruler of Aquarius, until Uranus was invented in 1781 and became regarded as the "modern" ruler.) Saturn's conservative, slow and steady, serious and responsible. It likes structure, order, predictability and is focused on results that come from hard work. At a party, Saturn is more likely to be the one who planned it, and has put placecards on the strategically arranged furniture showing where each guest is supposed to sit, along with little racks displaying his business cards.

Uranus is about as opposite as you can get from Saturn. It's all about looking to the future and envisioning the possibilities. It is fundamentally allergic to structure, predictability and playing it safe, and will go out of its way to avoid them all. In fact, when you think you can predict what Uranus will do, it is likely to do just the opposite, just to annoy you—and it's not above resorting to doing a good imitation of Saturn just to throw you off. At a party, Uranus is the one who suddenly puts on some obscure folk-jazz-hiphop-fusion CD and cranks up the volume, just to wake everyone up—and then yells "Hey, let's all go skinny dipping in the neighbour's pool!"

You see the problem.

How can one sign be ruled by two planets that are at such completely opposite ends of the universe?

In a way, we all have been exploring that question for the last couple of years, as we've lived through 4 out of 5 passes of the Saturn-Uranus opposition: Nov.04.2008, Feb.05.2009, Sep.15.2009, Apr.26.2010 and Jul.26.2010—hey, that's tomorrow! Okay, 5 out of 5. How strangely fitting that the Saturn-Uranus opposition should culminate within hours of a Full Moon in Aquarius, the sign that both of them rule!

So what does this mean? Well, not so fast! It's not as simple as saying, "Oh it means this..." There's nothing straightforward or simple, and certainly not reductive, about putting Saturn and Uranus in the same room together, even in opposite corners. One is tempted to back away slooooowly toward the door and padlock it on the way out.

This opposition first made its entrance on the day of the last US election, when the first African-American President was elected – certainly unprecedented in itself! This election took place in an atmosphere that polarized vehement supporters of the previous administration's conservative policies with equally vehement supporters of change and innovative progress. Can we say "Saturn opposite Uranus?" Yes we can!

That radical polarization of opposite factions, and the turbulent controversy that is spawned from it, has not stopped or slowed down in the 2 years that the Saturn-Uranus opposition has been in effect. Although the passion, posturing and persistence has remained, the targets being polarized to have changed somewhat. The President who had stood for hopeful change has since become a target for the anger and frustration of those for whom change has not come fast enough, far enough or in the direction they had hoped.

This is typical for any opposition energy, which is a naturally polarizing dynamic, and its effects are only amplified when very different planetary energies are involved, like Saturn and Uranus. The opposition aspect is composed of Point-A which looks out on the world and sees something (or someone) different from itself that lies at the other end of the opposition—Point-B, which also looks back at Point-A and also sees something/someone different.

Yet, there is reflection and symmetry in what they see, like looking in a mirror. If Point-A likes what Point-B is reflecting back, there is harmony and receptivity. But if it doesn't like what is reflected, it can trigger a reaction of discontent, objection, anger or even aggression. This is the Venus-Mars or Libra-Aries nature of the opposition. And since one side of the mirror is a fundamental part of what is reflected by the other side of the mirror, it's not possible to completely separate the two sides anymore than you can separate a person from their shadow. One begets the other.

When we're talking about Saturn and Uranus, we're talking about energies that are in some way "larger than life." Saturn is on the scale of society and the physical world. Uranus is on the scale of the archetypal soul—whatever it is that makes us greater than the sum of our parts. So when we feel stretched and pulled between them, our lives start to feel like we're being pulled across a big sky. And we've been living under that sky for 2 years now. Feel the pull?

The sign of Aquarius as an archetype pulls us across that same kind of sky. Should we respond to life and day-to-day decisions according to what will help us survive and thrive within the physical world? Or, should we respond in a way that extends beyond our immediate sense of self, to touch the higher potential that we know we could be if only we could reach just a little farther beyond the here-and-now?

At the Cardinal Crossroads!

Cardinal Cross at the Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn

Now available:

Have you been feeling like you're pushing a rock uphill lately? The Cardinal Cross aspect pattern is one reason why! Jupiter conjunct Uranus, opposite Saturn, T-squared by Pluto. Chaotic, inspiring, strenuous, transforming – one thing it's not is boring!

Anyone with strong Aquarius in their chart wrestles with these kinds of questions all the time. If you stick with meeting the demands of the physical world, you might carve out a successful career, for example, but you're likely to get bored after a while because you're feeling like, "Is that all there is?" And if you aim only for the higher potential, to become the greater echo of what you know you can be, you might be living a life that feeds your spirit but you'll likely be haunted by your landlord or mortgage company every month, which can drape a wet blanket over the shining vision of your highest potential.

Choose.

Or more to the point: choose how you will find the balance point between these opposites. Because it's darn near impossible to live in either extreme and still live successfully as a human being in the physical world.

So how does this relate to the Full Moon in Aquarius? The Full Moon chart has enough planetary traffic going through it to light up whatever crossroads you happen to be at and give you an archetypal headache in the process. It's a bit like trying to plan your dinner menu while standing in the middle of a busy city intersection—you have to plan dinner or you'll go hungry, but every time you try to concentrate you have to dodge another car coming at you. So don't be surprised if you feel a bit overwhelmed right now!

There are more aspect patterns per square inch than almost any chart I've seen. That's because all of the planets are crammed into a narrow band of the spectrum, within the last 3 degrees and the first 3 degrees of their respective signs—only 6 degrees of separation, as it were.

Only Venus stands apart, currently at 17 degrees Virgo, essentially unaspected but for a sesqui-quadrate (135°) to the Moon and a semi-square (45°) to the Sun. She's been without major aspects (no Ptolemic aspects, other than fleeting contacts from the Moon) since July 16, and will remain in that state until July 29. At that time she moves into interaction with the Cardinal Cross, as she approaches the opposition to Jupiter-Uranus and the conjunction with Mars and Saturn in August. If you've been feeling a strain lately in your financial dealings, social life or love life, this could be partly why. She's currently "in Fall" (stressed) while in Virgo, but she'll be happier once she gets into her own sign of Libra on Aug.06 and gets reconnected to the rest of the solar system.

And then we have all those aspect patterns!

Cardinal Cross aspect pattern

We can start with the Cardinal Cross, which is at full power right now. (Read more about the Cardinal Cross.) Saturn is strong and happy, having just moved into exalting Libra (Jul.22) and is still at zero degrees of that sign. It opposes Uranus, which is still at zero degrees of Aries. That opposition alone forms a lightning bolt of energy in the chart, since it occurs at zero degrees of Cardinal signs! This gives it even more significance, involving the co-rulers of the Full Moon in Aquarius.

Jupiter is still spinning strong like a top, having just gone retrograde only 3 days ago (Jul.23), and is still conjunct Uranus, both opposing Saturn. That shining vision of future potential, and the change that must take place to create it, still burn brightly from them both!

Mars is moving quickly to catch up to Saturn, now less than 3 degrees away and therefore is now part of the Cardinal Cross. Zzzzzap! Although not natural "friends," Mars can work well with Saturn, helping you apply yourself to whatever needs to be done to satisfy the necessities of your physical existence. On the other hand, Mars could also push and pull against Saturn in frustration, feeling burdened by a yoke of expectations and the demand of results around its neck. If you get to the point of wanting to scream and "act out" your frustration, try to take that potent energy and re-channel it into whatever needs to be done. They say the best revenge is living well, and the best way to beat Saturn is to not let it beat you.

Pluto, of course, is standing well back, T-squaring from Capricorn. In fact, our stationary Jupiter is exactly square to Pluto right now, which can greatly intensify a sense of outrage about injustice, unfairness and broken promises (and could resonate vividly with the Saturn-Uranus discontent). It's best to channel that passion into fighting for something constructive (not against something destructive), and avoid the temptation to resign yourself to resentment about the "worst case scenario."

Mystic Rectangle aspect pattern

A Mystic Rectangle emerges through the Sun-Moon opposition and the Mars/Saturn opposition to Jupiter/Uranus. Don't be surprised if you feel struggle or stress on the inside, while on the outside adopting an attitude of "it's all good." Putting on a brave or optimistic face to disguise internal worry can help to get you through troubled times, but it's best to do this out of a sense of balance rather than denial. In other words it's probably not the best idea to just pretend the struggle doesn't exist while you smile sweetly and say, "Problem? What problem?" Instead, aim for a state of balance where you can say, "Life may suck at the moment, but I'm not going to let it get me down."

Double Yod Key aspect pattern

We could also talk about the Double Yod Key aspect pattern, which are formed from two Yods that overlap, joined by the Saturn-Pluto square. One Yod points to the Sun from Pluto sextile Chiron, suggesting that your sense of purpose and vitality could feel frustrated by interference from larger power struggles which, although having a potentially workable solution, might not be a very satisfying one. The other Yod points to Chiron/Neptune from the Sun sextile Mars/Saturn, suggesting that the quest for spiritual healing could become distracted by the need for practical action on mundane concerns; however, the struggle to meet both your spiritual and practical needs can bring a beneficial sense of perspective to each.

Oh, and then there's Mercury! As we move into August, he goes into the Retrograde Shadow, gearing up for his retrograde romp from Aug.20-Sep.12. If you have a lot of Gemini in your chart or a prominent Mercury, you probably already feel this coming. This Mercury retrograde is likely to be an especially wild ride because Mercury is largely unaspected throughout August and September. These two factors (unaspected and retrograde) are likely to amplify all the usual Mercury retrograde weirdness.

Also noteworthy is that there are no planets in Water signs right now, which is likely to bring more emphasis to the cerebral quality of the Aquarian Full Moon. If you need to connect with creative energy right now, it might help to let ideas, communication and community observations bring you inspiration. In the same way, if you encounter a situation that evokes a strong emotional reaction from you, it might be helpful to look to new learning and information to help you understand what's getting stirred up inside you.

We could go on forever with all the intricate details of the current transits, but suffice it to say that there's a LOT going on right now. An astrology reading can give you perspective and insight, not only to find your way through the chaos but to benefit from it as well. I am available for personal readings, so contact me for more information or to set up an appointment.

Jul.26 – Mercury opposite Neptune (27:57 of Leo/Aquarius)

Inspired thinking, mental fantasy, imaginative ideas and lucid dreams are likely during this transit. This can result in enormous creativity that sees inspiration and magical ideas in the world around you (be sure to write them down to develop later). Your communication may be unusually intuitive and inspiring now. However, it can also be a time when your perceptions about reality are a bit off and coloured by wishful thinking and irrational conclusions. Doing a reality check with a trusted friend or advisor is a good idea, especially if you are trying to make important decisions right now. But be sure to explore any non-rational or irrational thinking, since the veil between the conscious and unconscious mind is thin now and you can learn much by observing your thoughts and perceptions.

Jul.26 – Sun trine Jupiter (03:23 of Leo/Aries)

This is a time when your understanding of the Big Picture and your place within it can click into place. As a result, your confidence and self-esteem can be quite high right now. Your ability to see opportunities and possibilities more clearly can produce an experience of being "lucky." Your insight into life and the world around you may be especially bright, optimistic and inspired. This is a "feel-good" transit, when your sense of self can seem to expand and become free. You may feel especially connected to spiritual energy during this time, finding new meaning in your live and the events that unfold around you. Self-confidence can run high now, and you could feel inspired to fight for justice or some cause. At the same time, there is a chance that all this self-assurance and "knowing" could go overboard into over-confidence, dogmatism or over-indulgence if it's not grounded in realism and humility. Just use your best judgment and enjoy this warm, shining energy!

Jul.26 – Saturn opposite Uranus (00:25 of Libra/Aries)  Jul.27 in AU  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

Responsibility and common sense face off against revolution and vision under this transit. These energies mix together like fireworks inside a small room! The fact that they're in an opposition aspect (180°) only amplifies their differences. However, you can get them to complement each other provided you don't get locked into thinking that one must win out over the other. It's tempting to get stuck in one extreme or the other, thinking that it's a contest about which is the "better" planet/approach/candidate/path. At their worst, they can create a war between the past and the future, between rigid conformity and chaotic rebellion, or between needing others' approval to feel good about yourself versus being so independent that you can't allow yourself to connect with others.

At best, this is about negotiating a cooperative balance between these extremes. Saturn contributes stability and caution, which provides balance with the flexibility and foresight of Uranus. When these two energies work together well, they can produce lasting change that opens up old structures and allows room for future growth. Uranus inspires you to open yourself to your best unique potential, while Saturn provides a solid foundation on which to express it.

Saturn and Uranus come into opposition about every 46 years. So for many of my viewers, either you weren't alive when it happened last (in 1965-67) or you might not remember it very well. The last opposition took place in the tumultuous 60s, when the radical youth faced off against the aging "establishment." It also combined with the infamous Uranus-Pluto conjunction which also fuelled the dramatic changes that began in the 60s. Over the next few years we are approaching the square aspect between Uranus and Pluto, which indicates a major turning point in the processes that began with the conjunction. The Saturn-Uranus opposition is the prelude and perhaps the facilitator of that turning point.

The dramatic disruptions and changes we are seeing now—economically, socially, politically and ecologically—are the early rumblings of long-term change. This will unfold both collectively and individually over the next 2 years. Trying to control or hold it back (Saturn) will only amplify the reactionary result (Uranus). On the other hand, just giving up and letting the chaos run wild (Uranus) will only send us crashing headlong into reality and harsh consequences (Saturn). Both sides must have a say in what happens.

This is the last of 5 passes: Nov.04.2008, Feb.05.2009, Sep.15.2009, Apr.26.2010 and Jul.26.2010.

Jul.27 – Mercury opposite Chiron (29:41 of Leo/Aquarius)  Jul.28 in AU

You could experience extra sensitivity, compassion or sympathy toward the problems and suffering of others under this transit. One possibility is that you encounter more people than usual who are struggling with problems that are brought to your attention. Another possibility is that you might be on the receiving end of the results of their suffering – for example, if someone takes out their frustration or discouragement on you. Yet another option is that you may encounter others who are sensitive to and able to offer help for your own ongoing problems and struggles. You may be in a special position to have insight into the problems of others, or they into yours. Exchange of information, experiences, ideas and theories could be useful. You might also experience a difficult interaction with someone that raises an old issue about style of communication (for example, words might be spoken with good intentions that instead cause hurt). This is a good time to listen and observe, and you might catch a glimpse of some ironic or paradoxical truth.

Jul.27 – Mercury enters Virgo (until Oct.03)  Jul.28 in AU

Mercury moves into its own sign of Virgo, where it brings an awareness of health, healing, work and service. This is a good time to be analytical, methodical and focused on improvement. But be careful not to get so lost in details or perfectionism that you can't see the forest for the trees. This energy is well spent by finding ways to make your work and the pursuit of your goals more efficient and effective. Try organising your activities better and prioritizing them according to what works well and what needs improvement and how. This is especially true for any health issues that keep getting pushed to the back burner. Whatever your plans, this transit can help you organise an effective strategy to move you forward.

Jul.29 – Mars enters Libra (until Sep.14)  Jul.30 in UK, AU

This is a time when aggression, anger and directness may have to be expressed gently, diplomatically and gracefully. Libra is not the most comfortable sign for Mars, since his typically sharp-edged and forceful nature becomes blunted and filtered through Libran softness and tact. It's a bit like dressing Star Trek's "Worf" in a tutu. However, when these energies combine and work well together, what can emerge is the passion to fight for justice and fairness. This is "the fisted hand in the velvet glove," and can create situations in which you must respond more like a charming but crafty ambassador than a brute force boxer. On the other hand, with force, aggression and directness somewhat blocked or unavailable as options, it may be difficult to respond decisively or purposefully to conflict and challenge. You need to rely more on your wits than your impulses, and strive for a win-win solution than a clear victory.

Jul.30 – Mercury trine Pluto (03:17 of Virgo/Capricorn)

It is possible to dive deep below the surface now, in your perception of situations, other people and yourself. If you have been working on trying to understand the deeper motivations and dynamics of what is happening in your life, there could be a breakthrough now. The light may finally go on in the darker corners that have eluded you, and your penetrating insight. You could find a way to articulate these perceptions and speak your mind in a way that is unusually powerful or intense (so be careful you don't inadvertently blow your audience out of the water). This transit can bring an opportunity to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions or ineffective forms of communication. Try writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit. This is the only exact pass for this transit, since Pluto was out of range when Mercury came through this area two months ago.

This is the last exact aspect Mercury makes (other than with the Sun or Moon) for 2 months! See Mercury enters the Shadow, Aug.01 below, for more about this.

Jul.30 – Mars opposite Uranus (00:20 of Libra/Aries)  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

Your energy is likely to be rather unpredictable, fluctuating or just plain "wonky" under this transit. Your moods could swing back and forth in reaction to outside circumstances that trigger your feelings buried under the surface. In particular, anger, confidence and impulsive desires could suddenly appear and disappear for no apparent reason. If you feel your freedom is being taken away or if you think your individuality is becoming lost in the Collective shuffle, you might feel the urge to abruptly push against whoever seems to be blocking you. This can come across as arbitrary rebellion, and it may not be easy for you or others to understand where this is coming from inside you. It might be a good idea to take some time out to focus inward and find out what's really going on under the surface, especially if these reactions are starting to spiral out of control. On the other hand, this doesn't have to be a "negative" energy. You might also feel more spontaneous than usual and be willing to try new things more easily than you usually do. It can be a time to discover new courage to venture beyond your comfort zone of what's familiar. Flash arguments could clear the air, leaving the way clear to make a fresh start. Essentially, this transit tends to be a bit of a roller coaster ride, which can have you howling in protest or shrieking with excitement...or both!

Jul.31 – Mars conjunct Saturn (00:49 of Libra)  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

This is one of those good-news/bad-news kinds of transits. The forceful, exuberant energy of Mars meets the cautious, serious energy of Saturn. This combination can create a lot of productivity or a lot of frustration – and often both. The wild horse of Mars energy can become a workhorse when combined with Saturn's discipline, capable of sustained effort that can bring concrete results. But it may also bring impatience from having your efforts blocked or delayed, or having to be accountable for impulsive actions. If having to conform to discipline, limitation and responsibility tend to trigger you into resisting and fighting back, you might feel a lot of anger and frustration under this transit. On the other hand, it could also help you come to terms with a difficult reality or decision, to take the necessary initial steps that can lead to long-term achievement and development. It is a good time to take action that has been carefully considered and planned out, or to start making plans for a long-term project.

Aug.01 – Mercury enters the Retrograde Shadow (05:21 of Virgo; until Sep.28) ("What's the Shadow?"  Read more about Retrograde Cycles.  Read more about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury again enters the Shadow – the area of Zodiac where it will later go retrograde (Aug.20-Sep.12/13). During its retrograde cycle, Mercury travels through the same span of the Zodiac three times (called the Shadow). The first time through, it is going in direct motion (moving forward), then retrograde (looks like it's going backwards), and then direct again. This means there is a more involved process of development and change involved with things that Mercury influences—ideas, thoughts, frame of mind and mental focus. It also concerns the collection, exchange, analysis and organisation of information. All forms of communication are also affected—email and snail mail, the Internet, the media in general, books and magazines, as well as public transit (buses, trains, etc.) and neighbourhoods. The situations developing over the next 2 weeks (leading up to when Mercury actually goes retrograde) will likely require further research, deeper consideration and adjustments to unexpected discoveries over the next couple of months. Expect changes in your plans, increasingly disrupted communication, and new information coming to light that may not fit conveniently into your plans. It's wise to leave lots of extra time to do things, plan future projects and get to wherever you're going. If you must make important decisions during this time, try to build some flexibility into your plans to allow for later changes—or if possible, you may want to delay final or irrevocable decisions until well after Mercury goes direct (Sep.12/13).

This is likely to be an especially challenging Mercury retrograde! Mercury remains mostly unaspected (without major/Ptolemic aspects) throughout August AND September. There are a few (blessed!) exceptions. There is the conjunction to the Sun, of course, on Sep.03. And the Moon makes fleeting aspects during those months. Other than that, Mercury isn't even within reasonable orb of any major aspects to other planets

Here's the sequence of what happens: Mercury leaves a trine to Pluto on Aug.05, shortly after entering the Shadow. It remains out of orb of any other aspects (except for the Sun and Moon) until Sep.04, when it again enters the orb of trining Pluto. However, it never reaches exact, and stations direct on Sep.12 less than 3 degrees from exactly trining Pluto (which is also stationary direct at that time—a powerful station for both of them!). At that time, Venus also moves into orb of a sextile aspect to Mercury (starting around Sep.09), followed by Mars a few days later (starting Sep.14). However, Mercury pulls ahead so that neither Venus nor Mars become exact in their sextile aspects to Mercury. Mercury again becomes unaspected Sep.25 until it moves into orb of opposing Jupiter and Uranus, and from there Mercury becomes the 3rd corner of the Cardinal Cross until Oct.06. The first exact aspect Mercury makes is the opposition to Jupiter on Oct.01—its first exact aspect since Jul.30.

In all fairness, if we only count the Ptolemic aspects (conjunction, opposition, square, trine and sextile), unaspected planets aren't that unusual. However, because this happens during its retrograde cycle, Mercury's unaspected period is extended. And this is also likely to double the retrograde whammy! So don't be surprised if this is a particularly vexing Mercury retrograde cycle!

Aug.03 – Jupiter square Pluto (03:12 of Aries/Capricorn)  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

This is the second of 3 passes of this transit: Jul.25, Aug.03 and Feb.25.2011. The first two passes will actually be in a wider orb from mid-May to late October, 2010, and then from January through March of 2011.

Aug.04 – Mars opposite Jupiter (03:10 of Libra/Aries)  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

Both inspired action and brash overconfidence characterise this transit. For up to a week before and after this date, you may find that your energy, anger, libido and ability to take action are amplified – so much so, that you may be pushing yourself beyond what is realistic or unable to deal with reasonable boundaries to prevent them from getting out of control. What is needed is to find that fine line of balance between ego-based desire and spiritual inspiration; between will power and focused faith; and between righteous anger and arrogant pride. Strive to bring both your ego's desires and your spiritual aspirations into what you do, for each has its own validity and won't operate well without the other.

Aug.04 – Mars square Pluto (03:11 of Libra/Capricorn)  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

This can be a volatile combination of energies, which can generate enormous stress and conflict, but can also motivate you go beyond your perceived limitations. The biggest dangers with this transit include obsessive control, violence in response to frustration, and natural reactions of anger being blown out of proportion into rage. However, if you are able to harness this energy and put it to productive use, it can fuel your ambitions and drive you to push past the barriers that are in your way (including your own discouragement or lethargy). There can be a fine line, though, between empowering yourself with determination and courage versus forcing the issue in a way that creates more problems than it solves. And there is a difference between being obsessively attached to the outcome versus discovering that you have more courage, strength and tenacity than you thought you did, when your back is against the wall. Sexual tension can be strong under this transit, so it is wise to use some good judgment about whether or how to act on that. Power struggles with others can become very intense, so strive to be clear in yourself about what you really want and how you can assert your interests without inflicting the emotional equivalent of nuclear war.

Aug.06 – Venus enters Libra (until Sep.08)  Aug.07 in UK, AU

Venus glides like a graceful model through her own sign of Libra, giving you the opportunity to expand your interactive style, cultivate diplomacy, beautify your surroundings, schmooze with social connections, and discover a new fashion statement. Find something beautiful, balanced or harmonious to appreciate or do during this time. You might consider visiting an art gallery, or watch a romantic movie, or listen to music that moves you into a peaceful place inside. You might feel drawn to going shopping for beautiful clothes or items to decorate your home. It can also be a good time to negotiate agreements with people, in a way that is fair and is focused on a win-win solution. Do something to celebrate, express and discover your inner and/or outer beauty. Find new ways to balance your own interests with those of others, which generates good will and harmony.

Aug.07 – Venus opposite Uranus (00:10 of Libra/Aries)  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

Relationships, social interaction, material resources and emotional balance may be a bit unpredictable or unstable around this time, as Uranus the Awakener sounds a wake-up gong in these areas. You may be more inclined to act out of character, to experiment or be reckless in relationship, social or financial matters, which could be liberating or disturbing, exciting or upsetting. Circumstances or other people might create a situation in which you are forced to respond in an unusual or unfamiliar way. The idea behind this energy is to become more flexible and more open to a broader vision of what is possible in those areas. There may be weak spots in the affected areas which this transit illuminates by creating problems, so that they can be repaired and strengthened, or else broken and released so that new opportunities can come in. Trust the process and keep your eyes open to seeing new truth and insight.

Aug.08 – Venus conjunct Saturn (01:36 of Libra)  Aug.09 in AU  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

The serious structure and responsibility of Saturn combines with the desire for pleasure, beauty and material abundance in Venus. This can be a good time to make concrete plans about financial matters (e.g., investments, budgeting, purchases, etc.), although this will work best if you do some serious research first, rather than simply going for whatever seems to "feel good." This is a time to begin a process of commitment, whether that involves developing your resources to achieve a certain goal, or negotiating the terms of a relationship or partnership. However, in order to clear the way for new commitments to flourish down the road, sometimes old commitments must be brought to a close first. So this may also be a time when previous involvements or plans may come to an end, especially if they no longer fulfil your needs or lack enough potential to reach your desired goals. In a similar way, you might find yourself blocked from being able to move forward in the areas of relationships, finances or pleasures. These areas may require some reworking or reconsideration before you're ready to proceed.

Aug.09 – Venus opposite Jupiter (02:54 of Libra/Aries)  (This is a Cardinal Cross aspect.)

This is a time when your desire for pleasure is wide open. Sexual desire could reach out using seduction. Desire for delightful tastes could become overindulgence in foods that may not be in the best interest of your health (e.g., sweets, alcohol, etc.). Spending can be impulsive and easily grow beyond your budget. Money-making opportunities could spill over into workaholic obsession. It might feel like nothing is "enough" and you feel compelled to continually reach out for more and more – a bottomless well of desire. On the other hand, this energy can also bring out your natural beauty and charm in social situations if you are shy or inhibited. If you've done your research and your comparative shopping, this could be the time you make a big purchase. Or you might find the feeling is right to make your move with a love interest and expand your intimate connection with that person. Or perhaps you feel generous and decide to donate your money or talents to a cause that reaches for a higher purpose. Enjoy, but don't blow your budget.
