When the Greek goddess Persephone was a maiden (called Kore), she was abducted into the underworld by Hades (Pluto). Her mother, grain goddess Demeter, searched unceasingly for her and would not allow anything to grow until she found her.
When Demeter finally located Persephone in the underworld, Pluto agreed to release her on one condition: that Persephone had not eaten anything while there. As fate would have it, she had eaten some pomegranate seeds, so a compromise was reached: Persephone would live with her husband, Pluto, for part of the year and would live with her mother the rest of the time. And so, while Persephone was in the underworld, Demeter mourned and would not allow anything to grow (winter) until Persephone's return which initiated the new growth of spring.
The New Moon in Virgo brings to life the story of Persephone as it reflects your own personal journey. Some take the Virgo maiden to be Persephone, since both are often depicted with a sheath of wheat. In addition, the Sun goes through Virgo at the time of year when summer's growth is being harvested and slows down to prepare for the winter hibernation (at least in the northern hemisphere, where the myth originated).
To go from being a young maiden under her mother's care to being Queen of the Underworld is quite a change! Indeed, Persephone's story reflects the evolution from girlhood to womanhood. It is often said that the dark red pomegranate seeds that she ate in the underworld symbolize the womb and its menstrual blood, and therefore Persephone represents the changes that girls go through in puberty.
Besides physical changes, the path from childhood to adulthood also leads into the depths of human feeling and experience—into the mysteries contained within the feminine side of the human psyche (regardless of your gender). Before the young psyche is ready to hold adult feelings and understanding, it must first be penetrated by experience that reaches far beyond what is familiar. As an example, it reflects the difference between an adolescent crush and the depth and complexity of mature love in an adult.
This penetration is described in the Greek myth as a "rape." Symbolically this is the ripping away of the veil that hides the entrance to the secrets and mysteries of the psyche. This is an initiation in the most profound sense of the word, for it begins a journey into the deeper levels of human experience. And it can be overwhelming when we are first introduced to that unfamiliar territory—often dragged there kicking and screaming by events that seem beyond our control.
I also see now why being taken to those depths is always an abduction. For we ... never feel quite whole enough, quite courageous enough, quite mature enough to go there on our own. We are always still virginal before the really transformative ... experiences.
And yet, this journey into the deep feminine realm of the psyche is compelling because an essential part of us lives there that we can't connect with any other way. All of us visit that deep cavern at some time in our lives. You may dread it, you may know it's coming, you may even long for it, but part of the process of becoming whole and growing from a child into an adult (or just becoming more of who you are, at any age) involves plumbing your inner depths. Usually you're brought there through some cathartic or deeply moving experience. This current lunar cycle could lead into one of those experiences, although more likely it will simply bring you to a deeper understanding of some profound experience or event from the past.
Persephone may seem to be symbolism more suited to deep, dark Scorpio than pure, chaste Virgo (the sign of the current New Moon). Astrologer Liz Greene points out that a "virgin" in the ancient world was not necessarily chaste but rather was unmarried. Greene also talks about the curious paradox of prostitutes who often have Virgo as a strong influence in their chart, which seems to align them with temple whores of old who offered sex as a sacred act in service to ancient virgin goddesses. Greene writes: (The Astrology of Fate, also available in Kindle version or at Amazon.ca in Canada)
The harlotry of the virgin goddesses does not mean merely sexual availability to all callers any more than 'virgin' means merely sexual intactness. I would understand it more as an openness to the flow of life, a willingness to trust the natural order, an acceptance of penetration and change.
So why is Persephone so important at this particular New Moon in Virgo? For starters, the minor asteroid Persephone is trine the New Moon, while Black Moon Lilith (another dark feminine energy) opposes it! However, most of the Persephone connection is found by looking to Mercury, Virgo's planetary ruler, since its attributes will greatly influence the New Moon. Mercury is still retrograde (Aug.20 to Sep.12), and since retrograde energy is inwardly focused, the New Moon points into our internal realms. Mercury has had almost no major aspects during this retrograde phase (other than to the Sun and Moon). In other words, our inner awareness has been in freefall within our inner abyss, off and on for the last few weeks.
The fact that there no major aspects from the New Moon to the other major planets is also likely to amplify that feeling of freefall. There is only a semi-square (45°) to Venus, which speaks to the less "fluffy" side of feminine energy. As a result, you might feel a bit lost in a maze of Virgoan details and not sure how to get your balance. On the other hand, you might find that the resulting disorganization or disorientation is able to liberate you from outmoded routines and obligations that have kept you enslaved.
As of around Sep.05, Mercury is finally in orb of a trine aspect (120°) to Pluto and will remain in that orb until about Sep.20. However, this aspect does not perfect (become exact). Mercury also enters the orb of sextile (60°) to Venus and Mars shortly after the New Moon, but these aspects do not perfect either. (You can read more about the interactions between Mercury and other planets in my write-up on this Mercury retrograde cycle.)
What do these non-exact aspects mean? They are mostly sequels of aspects that have already been exact in the past. These near-passes are like reminders of something we already learned or acquired at the previous exact pass. Alternatively, you might finish something that was begun back when Mercury made its previous aspect, or you might now gain insight into something that puzzled or eluded you at that time.
Mercury trined Pluto on Jul.30 and this was in fact the last exact aspect Mercury made before entering the "on-your-own zone" where he's had no one to talk to except the Sun and Moon—and them only briefly. His next exact aspect to Pluto will be the square on Oct.05, at which time we'll have to take those cushy creative connections from the sextile (which we're so conveniently being reminded of now) and apply them to the more challenging side of those Plutonian depths. The Mercury-Pluto combined energies will also be emphasized again Sep.12-14 when both planets station direct.
Mercury sextiled Mars on Jul.01, and their next major contact will be the conjunction on Nov.20. At that time we'll be challenged to take the creative information of the sextile and use it as courage and creativity while speaking from our passion.
Mercury and Venus have a very different kind of cyclical relationship, since both of them never stray very far from the Sun. Their last major aspect was the conjunction on Jan.05, and their next major aspect will be another conjunction on Oct.25, when Venus is retrograde. So this current almost-sextile is more like a potential for something, which teases or tempts us but doesn't come to fruition (for example, a promising friendship or relationship that fizzles out, or a suggestion to improving your finances that isn't followed through, or creative ideas that are forgotten). However, even this tease can be a reminder that you do have creative resources to draw on in a pinch, if nothing else.
These not-quite-there aspects can at least give us some frame of reference to tell which end is up and which is down, as we tumble through the inner freefall of this topsy-turvy Mercury retrograde cycle. And since these are easy-energy aspects (trine and sextile), they'll encourage a pleasant or creative attitude if we can stop shrieking long enough in freefall to just enjoy the experience for its own sake. And if you stay alert, they could even provide some intriguing food for thought, giving glimpses of deeper perceptions—a bit like Persephone's pomegranate.
The Virgoan Mercury in aspect to Pluto becomes the maiden Persephone who is abducted into the underworld. This lunar cycle can bring you to deep, even profound insights and awareness of what's happening in your subconscious. Pluto brings you into the depth of transformation and the mystery of change. It brings your Mercury awareness to the brink of the inner abyss and asks, "What do you see there?" Luckily, Mercury is no stranger to the underworld. One of Mercury's mythological roles is that of Psychopomp—guiding souls to and from the Underworld. In fact, it was Hermes/Mercury who brought Persephone safely back from Hades to Demeter.
So it seems Mercury (awareness, perception, ideas, communication) can usher you into Pluto's Underworld (hidden insights, secrets, deep levels of feeling and understanding). And Mercury can guide you safely back again when it's time to return to "normal" life. Pay special attention to your dreams, since this is one area where Mercury often whispers his secrets and shows you around the underworld of the subconscious.
Pluto is still involved in the Cardinal Cross with Saturn and the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction. (Read my article series on the Cardinal Cross.) So part of what is being channelled through your awareness is the archetypal "War of the Titans" between order and chaos, control versus spontaneity, and the tenacity of old patterns versus the struggle to build new patterns out of the ruins of the old ones.
If you are going through strenuous or difficult transits (especially from Pluto), your strength right now lies in your awareness, your ability to focus with self-honesty on what is truly happening (not blurring it out with generalities or wishful thinking), and your willingness to find words (or other means of communication) to express what you're experiencing. I am available for personal readings to help you find your best path through this journey. Please contact me for more details.
Venus is the planet of relationships, interaction, beauty, pleasure and material resources. She struts through Scorpio with attitude! As a result, we may experience sensuality, sexuality and intimacy in a more intense, in-your-face kind of way. You might feel the need to establish a better balance of power with others that is pleasant and even-handed on the surface but also deals with the more gritty or intense energy that tends to lurk under the surface. It may be easier to attract what (or who) you want now, by focusing your intent and interest on the object of your affection and desire. However, there can also be a danger of becoming manipulative, controlling or devious to get what you want. Strive to become centred in your deepest heart's desire through steadfast self-honesty. Aim to avoid becoming obsessed with power, wealth or lust so that you lose sight of your true light inside. This is a good transit to take joy in your instinctive nature.
Venus will go retrograde in Scorpio on Oct.08. She will retrograde back into Libra on Nov.07 and return to Scorpio again on Nov.29.
The coming year will take you on a mystical journey as Jupiter levitates through Pisces. Jupiter is still the traditional planetary ruler of Pisces, even though many astrologers now consider Neptune to be the modern ruler. Jupiter in Pisces can bring dreamy, imaginative, peaceful and magical experiences. This is the territory of faeries, fantasies and psychic impressions.
You could be especially open to a spiritual way of understanding things, sensing profound meaning in mere nuances and being unusually sensitive to the undercurrents around you. You may be more receptive to having faith in the goodness of the Universe and all within it. This is a time when you could experience a more direct connection to the sacredness of All That Is. Or, if you're more comfortable with rationality and logic, this can be a time when you see more clearly the exquisite beauty of how the design of the universe fits together so perfectly.
This can also be a time when you could be swept away by a bit too much "magical thinking." You might be more susceptible to getting your hopes up in a way that results in disappointment or disillusionment when the reality doesn't match the vision you had.
Perfectionism and idealism can inflate out of control, if your visionary capacity grows to be larger than life. It's possible to do the right thing for the wrong reasons, or to do the wrong thing for all the right reasons – in other words, things may not be what they seem and your own motives could become skewed by good intentions that fail to see a contradiction.
At its worst, Jupiter in Pisces could invite deception that uses your own human longing for redemption and liberation to trap you in an illusion– in other words, you want something (or someone) to be real so badly that you miss the signals that things are not what they seem.
However, even disillusionment and disappointment can bring you to wisdom. You might find a teacher who facilitates a new greater understanding of what life really is. This could be a guru or other teacher of higher philosophy and spirituality, or it might be a person who shows you what you're NOT looking for. Whether you encounter positive or negative experiences, there is meaning to be learned and true wisdom that emerge from it.
This transit can bring a mystical, imaginative, compassionate aura to Mars' normally direct, fast, aggressive, self-focused energy. You may feel inspired to act on faith, confront with compassion, and react gently. On the other hand, it can be much easier to be motivated by something that turns out not to be what you thought it was. Much can depend on how impulsive your actions are and whether they are based on preplanning and research. We may tend to see our actions as righteous and justified. Creative energy is usually strong, whether this is used literally in the arts or in finding creative solutions to conflicts and problems. Our anger and aggression may be expressed in a way that is compassionate and intuitive, although our assertive edge might also be blunted a bit too much. It might help to think of the snake in the old parable – even if you choose not to bite if someone steps on your tail, it doesn’t mean you can't hiss.
The healing of assertive energy and willpower mark this transit. It is bound to be easier to get past any inhibition you might normally feel about being assertive, expressing frustration and anger, and putting things into action. Perhaps you are able to reconcile some internal guilt or fear that has held you back in the past. Or, maybe you are finally able to reach a state of acceptance or resolution that allows you to move beyond a conflict or struggle that has been keeping you stuck. Applying your willpower to problems has a better chance of succeeding now because you're likely to be more attuned to the path that leads to peace rather than more conflict. It's possible you might choose to use this energy in the defence of another person, a cause or something else you feel passionately about. It's possible to focus your energy, intent, motives and actions in ways that are healing, healthy, balanced and constructive.
Close one-on-one relationships with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) could possibly benefit by being taken to a deeper level now, through creatively combining balanced harmony with deep connection. Just be careful that intimacy and bonding don't go over the top into obsession or domination. There is a brief opportunity now to become more authentic in how you relate to those close to you and how you establish a balance of power with them. The trick is to do this without trying to suppress, control or overpower the other person's interests. Financially, it is a time when you may have an opportunity to profit in your dealings with banks, insurance companies, taxes, and other institutions that deal with collective money.
For up to a week before and after today, you may experience mental intensity, confusion, and miscommunications or simply changes in your outlook. After being Retrograde since Aug.20, Mercury is now taking a slow turn to resume Direct motion. These past 3.5 weeks have challenged you to rethink and rehash things that required some fine-tuning or revision. The Direct station can be a time when clearer decisions start to emerge from the issues and struggles you've encountered during the retrograde period. Or, it might turn your perspective around so that you're seeing your situation fresh again. Over the next couple of weeks, while Mercury is still in the Shadow, your brain may feel a bit like it's gradually waking up after a deep sleep. During this time, you can gradually put into practice the learning and knowledge you've gained from your retrograde "dreams" and moonlight visions. It will take time to get fully back into sync with the Mercury direct energy. So, take it slow, one step at a time, and untangle yourself one strand at a time.
For about a week before and after, you may experience energy that is intense, compelling and transformative, as Pluto changes direction to its normal forward motion. If you've been going through deep, cathartic changes in your life over the last 6 months to a year, you may find that this station brings a shift in how you are able to approach those changes. This might be a time when you feel the weight of power struggles or loss in your life, but it can also be a time when you find empowering strength in yourself that you didn't know you had. Above all, it is a time when your deepest, most authentic Self can start to emerge and be reborn anew.
Mars now swaggers through Scorpio – its own sign, by traditional rulerships. Our impulses, willpower and forceful intent are more likely to be intense, passionate and controlled (or controlling) under this transit. Sexual energy may run high, although this may be a hunger for emotional intimacy and deep closeness, as much as it is a drive to satisfy a physical urge. Jealousy, anger and revenge may be more easily triggered, since passionate feelings and instincts are closer to the surface and may be harder to keep under discreet control. This can also be a time of potent creative and transformative energy, since the same emotions and drives that can be so destructive can also provide fuel for powerful self-expression and growth. This energy can also provide a formidable resource when used to fight for a cause – just be sure that the cause (and your methods of fighting) are consistent with your ethics, principles and integrity.
This is an extremely powerful combination that merges wisdom, intuition, brilliance and immense potential! Both planets are about seeing the big picture, seeing things from a broader perspective and the use of knowledge. This can be a time when brilliant ideas abound, new inventions are born and information may be combined in totally unique ways. Both planets are about potential – seed energy that can blossom into something greater than itself. This transit can herald a time when you break free of old restraints based on new information, knowledge or understanding about your confining situation. In a situation where you've been struggling to find an answer to a problem, it can lead to a breakthrough – what is called an "ah-ha!" moment.
The answer that comes to you might surprise you, even shock you. It might not be what you were expecting, and therefore you might be tempted to dismiss it, reject it or rationalize around it if it's not what you were hoping for. The answer might lead you to cast off old attachments, especially involving old beliefs or conclusions that no longer serve you well. The answer might require that you let go of everything you thought you knew or believed, to clear your point of view so that you can take in a whole new perspective. On the other hand, it might show that you must clear away old points of view so that you can face the truth about something, and in that sense it's not so much that you need to see something new as to accept something that's already there that you've been avoiding. The idea is to allow your natural intuition to speak to you with clarity, so that your preconceived notions of what to expect don't get in the way. Depending on your spiritual orientation, this might feel a bit like God or your Higher Self or the Universe is sending you a message.
This is the second of 3 passes of this transit: Jun.08, Sep.18 and Jan.04.2011. The whole transit will be generally felt in its effects from April 2010 through February 2011, and this second pass is most powerful (within a one-degree orb; very tight) through pretty much all of September. Whereas the first pass happened in Aries, the other two passes take place in Pisces. It's helpful to think of the Aries pass as lighting the torch at the destination at the top of the mountain, and the other two passes at strategic places along the mountain path to light our way. In other words, after seeing what is possible in Aries, we now have homework to finish up in Pisces before we are ready to move into Aries for good. If you've been envisioning or developing a new project, all three passes of this transit could be important turning points in that process. Watch for new or unexpected options presenting themselves around this transit, or alternatively you might see old expectations, blocks or perceptions break apart under this energy.
This can be a time of intense and powerful energy. It can be especially so if you focus your intention to tap into and use this energy deliberately, although if you are triggered into a reaction you might find it is more forceful than you intended. This can be a good time to make changes that have far-reaching, transformative effects. Your powers of persuasion can be stronger now, so be careful you don't try to force things to the point of making something happen that perhaps should be left alone or treated with a gentler touch. Sex and other passionate urges may rise more easily now, although obsession and the need to control your surroundings might come up with them. This transit is perhaps best used to refresh your sense of passion and transform your sense of purpose and direction.
Your confidence and ambitions may become amplified, possibly to the point of becoming a problem under this transit. It may be difficult to judge how much is too much versus just enough, and it could just be easier want more and more..."just in case." You may feel the urge to travel or do something that could expand your horizons (literally or figuratively). However, satisfaction may seem just out of reach under this transit, so there is a risk of pushing too hard and lacking perspective or good judgment. You could find that tolerance, compassion and understanding are hard to find, either in you toward others or in others toward you (or both). You are seeing things through a mental magnifying lens, which may be distorting your perceptions or reactions. On the other hand, this can be a good time to take an honest look at how closely you are living by your integrity and values. Feedback might come from others who could be seeing something more clearly than you can see it in yourself. Or, you might find that a minor irritation about someone or something outside of yourself suddenly becomes a major problem. This is probably because you're seeing it more clearly (although not necessarily more accurately). The lesson of this transit is that everything gets amplified together – the positive and the negative, and at a certain point the difference between them may become meaningless. Reaching a balanced understanding of all that lies within that expanded view is the key to gaining wisdom from the experience.
This transit brings an encounter with the Awakener! This could come in the form of another person or outside situation that shakes you out of your habitual routine and pushes you to try a new approach to your situation. Life may be very unpredictable right now, requiring you to be spontaneous, innovative or independent in the way you respond to it. This could be stressful or exciting! It is actually showing you a new path in the darkness, like a lightening flash in the night. If you feel startled or caught off guard, or confused about what to do next, find your internal centre and try to be open to what the situation is illuminating for you. You now have a chance to shed some old habits and ways that you are stuck, if you can stay centered in the middle of the whirlwind. You may experience revelations – that "ah-ha!!" feeling – which could open up new possibilities and opportunities for you. However, it might feel like you have little choice but to try these new things (rather than freely choosing them). You could find yourself reacting to others with a powerful impulse to throw off the shackles of anything that feels restrictive, to reclaim your independence – although this could also be motivated by a fear of commitment or responsibility too. It is wise to check your own inner motives, feelings and assumptions before automatically dismissing, rejecting or rebelling against other people.

Happy Solar Return to all Libras! While the Sun is in Libra, it brings experiences into our lives that focus us in the areas of love, close relationships, one-on-one interaction, diplomacy, negotiation, strategy, fairness, equilibrium, balance, harmony and beauty. This time also marks the point of equal balance between day and night – the Equinox. In the Northern Hemisphere, the nights now become longer than the days, and in the Southern Hemisphere, the days become longer than the nights, until the December Solstice. Balance is the key concept here! What is out of balance in your life, or what is being rebalanced? How can you negotiate or strategize to bring that area of your life back into harmony? Libra encourages you to balance your life in diplomatic, discreet, "win-win" ways. But if that's not possible, it will do it aggressively (creating conflict in order to break the stalemate of the imbalance) or manipulatively (people-pleasing to co-dependently get its way). Thus, Libra is known as both the peace-maker and the war-maker. If you find yourself instinctively trying to smooth out conflict – or instigate it! – take a step back and ask yourself if that is your best choice in the situation. Just don't get stuck in Libran indecision! Make your choice and then see if it brings what you want.

Meanwhile back at the Cardinal Cross...
Although the primary planets of the Cardinal Cross are gradually moving out of orb to form the Cardinal T-square, we're still getting echoes and ripples from it. The Full Moon in Aries is one example of that.
In case you just tuned in and are scratching your head, going "What's a Cardinal Cross?" this is a particularly challenging planetary aspect pattern that has been dominating the skies through most of 2010 and creating both enormous tension and strenuous growth in people's lives. (Read my article series At the Cardinal Crossroads.) It has brought many issues of the last 3 years to a head, demanding that we create a strong vision for the future, preserve the best from the past, and allow deep changes that reach right down to our roots.
The Full Moon in Aries takes place at 0 degrees—a very powerful degree since it initiates a new beginning out of the old. AND it brings the Cardinal Cross back into focus again. The Sun-Moon opposition T-squares Pluto, and it is also aligned with Saturn on one side and the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction on the other. So, the Full Moon reconstitutes energies that have been in effect from April through September 2010, and particularly between Jul.21 and Aug.01 (when Saturn in Libra and Uranus in Aries were both at 0 degrees of their signs). That zero degree T-square was in place for the Full Moon in Aquarius on Jul.25.
Okay, okay, I can hear the groaning... However, this Full Moon is about empowerment and balance, which are the qualities being applied to the Cardinal Cross energies. The Full Moon consists of the Moon in Aries and the Sun in Libra.
For one thing, with the Sun at 0° Libra this is aligned with the September Equinox – a time of rebalancing, equilibrium and a subtle tipping of the scales. It is a time when the balance of light and dark change places. In the northern hemisphere, the period of darkness begins to outweigh the period of light, and in the southern hemisphere it's the daylight that becomes dominant. The influence of this on the Full Moon indicates that we too are shifting in perspective, in how we direct our energy and in beginning to see the other side of polarized situations.
The Moon in Aries is ruled by Mars in Scorpio—a very strong placement, since Mars rules Scorpio (by traditional rulership). Mars' contribution to the Full Moon includes strength, tenacity, passion and the ability to take action that has a transformative effect.
Mars is currently conjunct Venus in Scorpio—a rather awkward placement for Venus who is in Detriment in Scorpio. Venus in Scorpio burns a bit too hot, too intense, too volatile and therefore finds it difficult to emanate her characteristic diplomacy, balance and harmony. In this placement, Venus is likely to be crafty, scheming and shrewd, which can be an asset when faced with a Scorpio-like situation that requires controlled empowerment and deep concentration, but could be a liability in a situation requiring a more delicate or light touch.
Venus is the dispositor of the Sun in Libra. The Sun is in its Fall while in Libra (opposite its sign of Exaltation), which is also an awkward kind of placement. The Sun struggles somewhat in Libra because the Sun wants to focus on the self, the personal identity and to be the center of attention, whereas Libra wants to focus on other people and one's relationship to them.
So both the Sun and its dispositor (ruler), Venus, are operating at a bit of a disadvantage, while Mars, the ruler of the Full Moon, is very strongly placed. That puts Mars as "King of the Castle," so to speak. We're in Mars territory now. The impetus is toward male/yang/active/outward energy. Any female/yin/receptive/internal energy is more likely to emerge within the context of outward events and taking action.
This is important, because this is the influence being brought to bear on the Cardinal Cross energy right now. Think back over the last 6 months or so. What have you been struggling with? What challenges have you been facing? How have you been divided between past and future, tradition versus innovation or limitation versus expansion? Or perhaps you have played out one side of these opposites while having to deal with the other side in others or in the external world? How have you been challenged to bring deep change in your life? Have you been forced to unearth obscure secrets or confront unconscious motives and feelings?
Listen to relaxing music while you read...
In Mars territory, these questions and issues require an active response—perhaps even a proactive response that seeks not only to address the immediate situation but also speaks to the implications and consequences that will occur down the road. In a way, this Full Moon asks: After wrestling with your situation for most of this year, what are you now prepared to do with it or about it?
This Full Moon is about tipping the balance. It asks you to take a step that shifts the focus in a direction that you will travel for the foreseeable future. This doesn't have to be a big step—just enough to shift your focus. It doesn't have to be done all at once, and probably shouldn't be. It's not about becoming unbalanced, but about tipping the balance. It means committing your self to action that puts the weight of your intentions in a particular direction.
Think of a teeter totter (sometimes called a seesaw). In biking, it's a long board or ramp that's balanced in the middle, so that when one end goes up the other goes down and vice versa. If you bike or walk up one side, it requires increasing effort since you're working against gravity. But if you keep going, you'll hit a point around the center where the balance shifts, and then you're coasting down the other side. Once you've passed that midpoint, it gets easier. It doesn't take much to shift the balance; you just have to make it to that tipping point. And in fact, once you're pass that point, not only does it require less effort to keep going but it's much harder to backtrack (since you'd have to go back uphill again).
In much the same way, this Full Moon brings you up to that tipping point. You're not quite there yet; it requires a bit more effort. Not a lot; just a push in the direction you want to go. Like in the video, once you hit that tipping point, things can start to change rather quickly, so it's best to move carefully. A little can go a long way.
So the question becomes: Where do you want to go? What's the really important priority that has emerged this year? Where in your life are you trying to create change? What has been holding you back that needs to be moved out of the way, let go or reintegrated into your efforts in some new way? And, most important, how can you empower yourself to move forward, to act from your passion and to draw on your deeper strength?
It is important to carefully consider what step you will take in the direction of your choice. Once you've reached that tipping point, it won't be as easy to change your mind. Your momentum will be pulling you forward.
It's also important to choose that crucial step carefully. It doesn't take a stomp or a gallop or a jump to tip that balance—just something that moves you up to and beyond the balance point. It might be a decision that is put into action in some significant way; for example, applying for a new job or signing up to take a course. Or it could be a symbolic gesture, like a ritual that focuses your intention, followed by a simple action that acts on that intention. Or perhaps you want to make a commitment to change your behaviour or attitude, so you could write down what it is you want to change and what you will do instead, giving examples of how you might do that.
Since the Moon is conjunct Uranus and Jupiter, your action might rise inside you as a sudden, uncharacteristic or unconventional impulse (just be careful not to be reckless or malicious). Or, once you hit that balance point, change could happen very quickly or dramatically. Or, you might feel the need to "push the river" and force your situation to move faster than it should.
The one thing to avoid is staying stuck. If you're feeling overly cautious, afraid to take that first step or uncertain which direction is best for you, there are a number of possible reasons for this. Maybe you're trying to take too big a step and it would help to go slower. It's also possible you aren't ready to make a big decision yet, in which case this tipping point might be best used for committing to something that will help you become more ready. If you have trouble making decisions and commitments at the best of times, you might just need to talk to someone who can give you a reality check or help you get clear about what your priorities are.
This can be a challenging time, when your sense of purpose, identity and direction may feel blocked, overpowered or regulated by forces beyond your control. You may find yourself confronted by difficult situations or people, requiring that you rally an unusually strong show of power to keep from feeling powerless or overwhelmed. The trick is to center yourself in empowerment rather than simple power – that means your power comes from within yourself rather than from controlling people and situations outside of yourself. You might find yourself involved in power struggles or abandonment, either in the present or stirred up from the past. You might be forced to let go of your attachment to something or someone due to circumstances beyond your control. However, this can also be a time when you reach inside yourself and find you have more strength than you thought you did. Adversity may inspire new assertiveness and purpose in you – empowerment born of conflict and struggle.
Mercury finally leaves the shadow—the part of the zodiac where it went retrograde from Aug.20 to Sep.12. This means the confusion, delays and miscommunications of the last 2 months have mostly dissipated and things should be more or less back to normal (whatever that is). The difference is that you now have the benefit of seeing things from a different perspective, which gives you more choices than you had before. If you've been waiting until Mercury finished with the retrograde cycle before you made a final decision about something, this can be a good time to decide what direction you want to go. Just don't forget your common sense.
This has been an unusually difficult, chaotic and challenging Mercury retrograde cycle! This was due to the fact that Mercury made no exact major aspects to other planets (except the Sun and Moon) from before it entered the Shadow until after it has left the Shadow. It will make its first exact aspect on Oct.01 – an opposition to Jupiter. (Read more about this under that transit below.)
For a few days before and after this date, you may feel serious, studious, stuck, blocked, committed and/or hard working. It could be a good time to manifest well prepared plans, or you might have to get real and deal with difficult realities in new ways. You may have business with authority figures, or you might be called upon to act in a leadership role. It can also be a time to own your own authority – that is, to BE the authority figure, either to someone else or just to yourself. It might be a time of decision, when you have to choose one path or option over another. This can feel like an ending, as much as it is a new beginning, because selecting one possibility means you must let go of the other possibilities (at least for now). This is a necessary part of the process of manifestation and maturity. Doing closure on the people and situations that are passing out of your life will help to complete the process of growth and learning they have brought into your life, and can help clear the space for something new to begin growing in their place.
Your thoughts and words can become amplified under this transit, which could bring a sense of adventure, a surge of ideas, and/or imbalance due to exaggeration. You may find it's hard to stop talking (or writing), your head is filled with so many possibilities. However, your judgment about the validity of your ideas may be a bit off, or you might feel the urge to overstate your position to keep from being misunderstood. Blame and judgment could creep into your perceptions of others or the other way around. This might spring from a need to find a greater meaning or truth in the facts, having difficulty bridging the gap between the raw information and the big picture. The trick is to keep a balance between simplicity and elaborate complexity. The challenge is to find ways to express, think about and understand the vast range of possibilities and meaning within the perceptions of everyday life. Not all of it will survive the translation, but enormous spiritual creativity can be generated in the trying.
This is the first exact major aspect Mercury makes since Jul.30! (except for brief aspects from the Sun and Moon) Since Mercury has been mostly unaspected, it has made for an unusually difficult, erratic and looooong Mercury retrograde cycle! Now, Mercury is finally grounded again! It's also out of the retrograde Shadow ("What's the Shadow?") so its energy should start to become easier to work with. The first aspects that Mercury makes is to the Cardinal Cross, so the challenge will be to bring your awareness and learning from the Mercury retrograde cycle to deal with the issues of the Cardinal T-square. What big challenges, issues or problems have you been dealing with this year? If you look closely at your experiences during this Mercury retrograde cycle (since Jul.30), you will find new clues, information, insight, perspective or ideas that you can bring to the bigger problems of this year. This can provide a valuable piece of the puzzle, as Mercury moves through the Cardinal Cross between now and Oct.08.
This is a wakeup call! You are asked to open your mind so that you can see something about your life, yourself or your situation that has eluded you until now. It might be a shocking revelation that changes your whole perspective...or it might also be a delightful surprise that adds a new dimension you hadn't thought of. However it manifests, you are in a position to see your situation more clearly and objectively – although this can also make it seem like this energy is outside of you and happening TO you. However, if you look closely inside yourself, you may see thoughts, perceptions and impressions that correspond to the external events and participate in the interchange. Emails, Internet chats, and interaction with technology may be part of this transit as well. Communication may be a bit erratic or unpredictable, so be careful not to speak thoughtlessly or carelessly. However, you may find that words and perceptions come to you intuitively and spontaneously.
If you are in Sydney, Australia, or if your "down under" region observes Daylight Savings Time, turn your clocks forward one hour the night before today. If you're not sure, you can check if your area is changing to Daylight Time.
Mercury glides into Libra, bringing awareness and new ideas about your style of interaction and how you communicate with others. It may be easier to speak (and listen) with gentleness, fairness and diplomacy during this time. Thoughts, ideas, communication and negotiation could reach a state of increased balance and harmony, and you may be especially sensitive to other people and your environment. You could be more motivated to balance criticism or anger with gentleness and diplomacy. On the other hand, interaction could also become a carefully crafted game in which truth, honesty and facts are replaced by manipulative strategy and "white lies" designed to avoid hurt feelings. Indecision and "fence sitting" are possible under this transit, since you are able than usual to see many different sides of a situation. It might help to bounce your ideas and thoughts off someone who can be a good sounding board and give you feedback. It may be easier now to reach a win-win solution to conflicts, which is fair to all concerned – but be careful you don't make incorrect or self-serving assumptions about what the other side wants.
Diplomacy and harmony combine with forcefulness and enthusiasm under this transit. How you experience the results will depend in part on which you value more – winning (Mars dominant) or resolution (Venus dominant). One possibility is being able to negotiate agreements with others in assertive ways; another possibility is being able to confront others with gentleness and diplomacy. The courage to act could become either blunted or enhanced by an increased sensitivity to how your actions could affect others. Your ability to negotiate a diplomatic solution to a problem might be sabotaged by impatience, frustration or too much directness – or that same forcefulness might help by keeping things from getting bogging down or by injecting an infectious enthusiasm to the discussion. Although the effects could look very different in various situations, the best results will likely be found by using the best of both of these opposite energies.
This is the second in a series of 3 conjunctions between Venus and Mars. On Aug.20, they first conjoined at 13:35 of Libra. Venus was fast and with both of them in Venus' own sign, Venus was the stronger of the two (since Mars is in his Detriment in Libra). Venus wrapped Mars in a lovely Libran hug while Mars blushed and tried to look macho for the camera.
This time, on Oct.03, Mars is the faster planet because Venus is slowing down for her upcoming retrograde station on Oct.08. In addition, this second conjunction takes place at 12:52 of Scorpio, which is Mars' sign so he is the dominant energy now, while Venus is in her Detriment in Scorpio. Mars is tying up submissive Venus with scarves and handcuffs, demanding that she reveal her deepest, most passionate secrets to him.
By the time Venus catches up to Mars again, it will be May.23.2011 and they will conjoin at 9:01 of Taurus. Once again they are in Venus' sign and she is the stronger of the two with Mars again in his Detriment in Taurus. Perhaps Venus will put Mars to work ploughing the fields where Venus will work her magic to make things grow into abundance.
You are faced now with a challenge to empower your communication and perceptions, although this may not come easily. It could involve having to face some rather difficult truths that might be a bit disturbing or hard to accept. However in doing so, you gain a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself, your situation and your role within it. Obsessive or persistent thoughts that are morbid or paranoid are possible, which could be helped by finding something more positive to focus on or a creative outlet. Communication (from others or yourself or both) could be intense, intimidating or even downright damaging, since it may be tempting to get caught up in power struggles and domination. But communication can also be used now to heal, by cutting through hypocrisy and insincerity in order to reach a deeper authenticity and truth – like lancing a boil so that healing can take place.
