- Susanne Vega
In the beginning, the archetypal Aries life force bursts out of Source, full of exuberance and zest. In Taurus, that energy is grounded in substance, practicality and stability so that the life force is sustainable and doesn't become just another flash in the pan.
In archetypal Gemini, we start to think about all of this. We become aware of it, acknowledge it, name it, identify it and begin to objectify it. It holds up a mirror whereby we start to separate from what we perceive. Like the Gemini Twins, we see ourselves reflected in the world around us and the world reflected in ourselves.
Awareness and consciousness emerge as we begin to see that our subjective experience is not everything that we are. We develop a "meta-awareness" that allows us to think about the thinker and ponder the thoughts generated by the thinker.
We also start to see ourselves as being part of a collection of beings—the neighbourhood, in 3rd house terms. Archetypally, it is our first experience of community—that we are one among many.
In a sense, Gemini is where we first realize that we are not alone. The world is full of others with whom we can exchange information, share ideas and compare notes.
Man may be defined as the animal that can say ''I,'' that can be aware of himself as a separate entity.
- Erich Fromm
And yet, ironically, with our awareness of not being alone comes the first glimmer of recognition that in another way we are truly alone. In other words, as we become aware of others who are "not-us," it implies that there is an individual self within us that is separate from those others. They are "not-us" and we are "not-them."
It is a paradox that as we gain a broader connection to the world around us, it comes with a price. We must sacrifice our blissfully innocent assumption that everything around us is merely an extension of ourselves. We start to realize that life is a two-way window that reveals the world to us, as well as revealing who we are to the rest of the world.
It's a little like Adam and Eve who, upon acquiring (self) knowledge, also become aware of their nakedness—the vulnerability of knowing that, since you perceive others, you too are being perceived by them. And since others are "not-you," you cannot control—or even know with certainty—what they think about what they see in you. This is both the reward and the sacrifice that comes with self-awareness.
Words have meaning and names have power. The universe began with a word, you know. But which came first: the word or the thought behind the word?
- "Lorien," Babylon 5 TV series
This dawning realization of both our communal connection and our isolation and separateness later grows and develops in more sophisticated ways, as we evolve archetypally through the zodiac. For now, our discovery of others is usually what we focus on, while the implication of our separateness hovers at the periphery of our consciousness.
Meanwhile, our Gemini nature is seized with the curiosity and fascination of the Child within us. We want to know everything there is to know about this other-life that surrounds us, affects us and interacts with us, and yet is not-us.
We think about what we perceive around us. We name it, define it, articulate it, talk about it, write about it, read about it and get to know it. We notice how it shows us something about ourselves, as well as showing us what we are not. Like identical twins, the world around us may look like us but both they and we are still separate individuals.
In the end we are all separate: our stories, no matter how similar, come to a fork and diverge. We are drawn to each other because of our similarities, but it is our differences we must learn to respect.
- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
This New Moon in Gemini brings to us the part of Gemini experience that mirrors what is similar to us in the surrounding world. And it shows us the differences between who we are and who we are not, as revealed by the events and people in that outside world.
With the Sun-Moon conjunction in close trine aspect to Saturn, this is not necessarily a difficult or unwelcome experience. The knowledge that you are ultimately alone and separate from the world around you means you get to make decisions according to your own needs and aspirations. You aren't bound by what others do or the priorities they value. By claiming yourself as a separate individual, you get to define your own goals, ambitions and direction.
This lunar cycle can also be a time when you are identifying and naming what is. Language is part of Gemini's realm, and language plays an important role in structuring, shaping and defining how we think about things. By assigning a word, name or phrase to something, you give it a form that helps to solidify how you frame your experience of that thing.
Names have power. Shamanic primitives guard their true names -- give me your name and you give me power over you. In the ether, your name is your only identity. Give away your name and you give away yourself.
No cause, issue, or crusade has a follower until it has a name. A good name evokes images, emotions. A well-named issue becomes uncontestable.
For example, if I don't particularly enjoy cooking, I might describe preparing dinner as a chore, which frames it as a necessary yet joyless event. However, if I think of it instead as accomplishing a task that gives me a reward of good food at the end, it helps to shape my experience in a more positive way.
The meaning in language relies on emphasis, focus and prioritizing different components of the experience. If I focus on the enjoyable end result, in the way I describe or think about the experience of getting there, it frames the whole event—and, to some extent, my experience of it—differently. I'm not naïvely suggesting that by choosing different words we can easily change an upsetting or painful experience into a joyful one. Nevertheless, how we think about it and what we emphasize about it can influence how we carry that experience inside and what we take away from it.
Mercury, the ruler of Gemini, is in Taurus—another grounding influence that can solidify how we name and frame what we encounter. Being in a Fixed sign, it lends a quality of endurance, which implies that how you frame your situation can have a lasting effect. Being in a Fixed Earth sign, it also suggests that forming that frame shouldn't and won't be a fast exercise. Take your time and think carefully about what you want to develop and evolve out of your experience.
A man is but the product of his thoughts.
What he thinks, he becomes.
- Mohandas K. Gandhi
Besides being a New Moon, this is also a partial Solar Eclipse, visible in northern Russia, eastern Asia, Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland and Iceland. This is the first of two consecutive Solar Eclipses, the other being July 1st. That this is also an eclipse intensifies the New Moon energy and gives it an even more lasting and solidifying effect.
Eclipses in general tend to stir up feelings, issues and energy from the unconscious. At worst, they can cause havoc as they evoke dramatic or drastic transformation in your life. More often, they open up a window of change that unfolds and evolves through a period of months or years.
This process often reaches a turning point or fruition point when the eclipse point receives major transits from activating planets. The dates below indicate those times. Mars can energize, upset or boost the energy released by the eclipse. Jupiter could bring rewards and opportunities, or it could amplify the effects (good or bad). Chiron can bring a "healing crisis" in which problems arise (in health or other areas) and give you a chance to bring healing to those problems by changing your relationship to the difficulties.
Neptune is virtually stationary, turning retrograde in just 2 days. Neptune also sextiles Jupiter just as it enters Taurus, becoming exact on Jun.08. This casts an aura of creativity, imagination and inspiration over the New Moon Eclipse energy. Amidst all that practical mental focus, idealism hovers in the air with rainbow coloured promise. At its best this could guide your best intentions with a sense of higher purpose. On the other hand, it might also make it harder to distinguish what is practical and real from what is mostly wishful thinking. If in doubt, do a reality check with someone you consider grounded and wise.
What's also remarkable about the Neptune station is that Mercury squares it exactly as it is stationing on Jun.03. This could take the Gemini New Moon/Eclipse energy in an unexpected, impractical or romanticized direction. This may or may not be a good thing, since it could blur or confuse the clear focus you've been working so hard to create. On the other hand, it could introduce an idea or a way of perceiving something that you hadn't considered. Just keep it within the original context and don't let it distract you entirely off your best chosen path. This could also be a helpful diversion that gives your mind a rest temporarily—just don't forget to get back on track afterwards.
The Cardinal Cross continues its return engagement, creating a surrounding context of transformation. This emphasizes the need to get clear about the best way to manifest and manage the changes that are happening in your life. This comes into sharp focus at the next New Moon, which is also a Solar Eclipse, taking place in Cancer. That eclipse forms a Grand Cross with the Cardinal Cross, bringing back similar energy that you encountered in June 2010. Think of the current eclipse and lunar cycle as a good time to do your homework in preparation for the challenges that lie ahead.
The next Full Moon will be a Total Lunar Eclipse, so this intense eclipse energy will be with us for an unusually long time—affecting two consecutive lunar cycles. The ride could get a little bumpy, so get your personal support resources lined up and ready to roll. I'm available for private readings, so contact me for prices and more information.
If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it.
- Mary Engelbreit
Mercury is the planetary ruler of Gemini, so the mind wants to fly fast and free. Communication and perceptions may come and go like a fresh breeze through an open window. This can create a wide variety of ideas but not necessarily productive application of those ideas. You might find it a little easier to articulate words, sharpen your mental focus, and collect and analyze your thoughts and information. This can give wings to your ideas and self-expression, but remember that you'll have to back up any promises and "fast talk" with action and substance. Let this be a time to explore possibilities and enjoy social interaction, rather than jump to final conclusions. Collect the raw data and exchange ideas, but be aware that understanding the broader meaning will likely come later.
Your mental focus may be a bit clouded, confused or lethargic right now, as your conscious mind struggles to grasp the formless, limitless expanse of the Universe and the unconscious. You may experience some disillusionment or disappointment, in your observations or communication with others. However, what is flowing under the surface of events right now is the need to dissolve away the crust of old expectations that blocks your view from seeing a greater Truth. If you're feeling off-balance, try to listen more than you talk, so that you can be receptive to your inner sensitivity. Left-brain analysis might be difficult to work with right now unless you balance it with a lot of right-brain intuition. You may have to let go of a rigid mindset, or give up what you think you understand about a situation in your life, in order to open yourself to a new perspective that is difficult to define but is ultimately in the best interest of your spiritual growth.
What makes this particular transit especially powerful is that Neptune is exactly stationary. This emphasizes the qualities of confusion, as well as inspiration and intuition through adversity.
For up to a week before and after this date, you may feel a thick concentration of Neptune energy. This could include vivid dreams and imagination, foggy confusion or fluid intuition. You might experience unusual sensitivity to the people and situations around you. The station could create a turning point in situations that have unfolded over the last few months, especially those in which you need to surrender to something greater than yourself, whether that is the creative process, a stressful situation or the Universe in general. This can be a time when you come to an internal acceptance (or resignation) about what needs to be done in your life. As a result, you might feel a sense of longing, dissatisfaction, disappointment, sadness, depression, fatigue or low energy. Or, you might feel a sense of unburdening relief, inspiration, hopeful possibilities or deep beauty. The next 5-6 months will be a time to probe the spaces in between the facts and the uncertainties – to learn about that force greater than yourself, as well as the (unconscious) part of yourself that longs to merge with it.
Knowledge and understanding come through concrete, physical and practical experience. Realism becomes a form of spirituality when everything around you is seen as an expression of the Universal Mind. Under this transit it can be easier to discover the sacred side of nature – the miracle and persistence of life that pushes a blade of grass up through the asphalt. You might usually call it a weed to be destroyed, but think of the tenacity of life that that brought that weed into being against all odds!
On a more personal level, Jupiter in Taurus can bring very fixed opinions that demand concrete proof before they can be adjusted. Perspective can be very slow to change because all angles will be examined thoroughly and only then will a change be decided on. Although this can make it difficult to change direction or beliefs, it lends great stability to these areas. Expansion and growth happen gradually – like large crops growing from small seeds, if you attend to your aims, goals and aspirations, they will grow with the help of patience, consistency and practical action.
Jupiter in Taurus can also make you a bit lazy. Taurus patience, love of luxury and enjoyment of life can expand into complacency, overspending and indolence. Taurus being a very Fixed sign, once you get used to relaxation and tranquility, it can take a huge effort to get up and get moving again. It may help to use Taurus' love of routine and habit to ensure you make the effort to not fall into lethargy.
The lesson of Jupiter in Taurus is to allow the depth, abundance and pleasure of life to expand and enrich your existence, but not smother it with too much of a good thing. Celebrate what you have, but remember to keep moving toward whatever lies beyond the far horizon. It's wonderful to be contented with the here-and-now, but don't allow that contentment to become inertia that keeps you stuck.
There is potential for brilliance and excitement under this transit. You may be more spontaneous, upbeat and eccentric than usual. If you are used to a fairly predictable lifestyle, it is a time when you may be inspired to experiment with something out of character. If you are used to being whacky, zany and impulsive, this transit can provide opportunities to express this. You may have an increased ability to "think outside the box" if you stretch your mind a little, and there is the possibility of having an "ah-ha!" experience, when answers and realisations fall into place. There is also the possibility of being mentally restless, so that it's hard to slow down your thoughts or apply yourself seriously to your responsibilities. Your attention span may be a bit short for a couple of days. This energy can be used to consider new ideas that seemed outlandish or impossible before, and see new potential in them.
Your mental focus and perceptions may feel a bit strained right now. You could find yourself locked in a struggle of indecision that stems from a "glass half empty" versus "glass half full" dilemma. It may be difficult to stay objective and evenly balanced in your perspective, but by working with this you could also find a new mental focus that gives you increased clarity. It might be tempting to sink into cynicism as a way to deal with what seems like a no-win situation. On the other hand, this transit could bring your mental perspective to a kind of "healing crisis" that forces you to get a better grip on the ideas, communication and frame of mind that have been problematic for you. Instead of reaching for extremes (hoping this will clarify the path in front of you), it will help more if you can take a few steps back to allow all the conflicting and out-of-sync elements to coexist together – creative paradox. If you have been in denial about something, this could be a turning point that allows you to grapple with the complex reality of your situation.
It can be easier to take a logical, practical approach to problem-solving and pursuit of your goals now. Your mental outlook is likely to be calm and grounded. This is a good time to make plans and work out the logistics of how you're going to get from "here" to "there" in pursuing your goals. You may find it's time to bring closure to finished goals by distilling and systemizing what you've learned in the process of pursuing those past goals. Or, you might find you are able to draw on past achievements to assist and support your current goals and plans. It is a good transit to bring structure to your thoughts and communication. You may find it's a little easier to accept authority – yours or someone else's – and that you are able to speak authoritatively about things about which you have knowledge or experience.
The retrograde station can be felt for up to a week before and after this date. Since Chiron is often about health, you may find health issues coming to the foreground now. General issues about wounding, healing and hurt—physically, psychologically and/or spiritually—may come to a turning point now, making it necessary to take some time for healing, reconstruction, and reconciliation of the energies that are out of balance in your life. The retrograde station (now) begins this process, which gradually unfolds over the next 5 months. Focus your energies on acknowledging the areas that need healing in your life—literally or figuratively. Don't forget that although there are areas that still need healing, you have made progress on much of this in the past. It's important to balance your acknowledgement of the work yet to be done with recognition of what you have already achieved in the past.
There is great potential for a heightened sense of purpose, vision and optimism now. The wisdom and confidence of Jupiter is mixed with the surrender to the Cosmic Lifestream of Neptune. What can result is an exciting and inspiring vision of "what could be," provided you are willing to follow it up with concrete action. This transit shows you what is possible and gives you the pieces that can make it happen, but you still have to work at putting them together—kind of like having a cake mix on your pantry shelf. The challenge here is that you are combining focused beliefs and knowledge (Jupiter) with an intuitive, imaginative and spiritual experience (Neptune).
While these energies can combine well and relatively easily, there may still be a resistance to doing so because something of Neptune is always lost when we try to manifest it in some way. For instance, if you're going to pursue a dream that you have, it means taking a very personal, internalized feeling and translating it into something much more pointed and definite—an opinion, belief or judgment, which means others might challenge you, disagree with you or even judge you.
On the other hand, this can also be a time of great optimism, when things feel like they can fall into place easily if you just give them a wee push. In fact, you could feel so euphorically optimistic that it seems like you could walk through walls and any other form of resistance. Be careful not to overplay your hand, but do enjoy the renewed confidence and faith in life that you might feel. This is a great opportunity to invest some faith in your vision of "what could be" and move it a little closer to actuality. Let your imagination and wonderment guide you.
This is the only pass of this transit, so make the most of it while you can!
Relationships, finances, resources and values take on an air of curiosity, communication and cleverness. It is a good time to discuss, think about and create strategies to improve these areas or make them more enjoyable. You may be especially curious, flirtatious or easy-going now – so much so that you might drift into superficiality (which might be a welcome rest from more intense or committed social activity). It can be a good time to exchange ideas and information with others, especially in a social context. Schmoozing and networking with others are prime examples of this. This can also be a good time to negotiate contracts and agreements with people, in this atmosphere of information exchange. Just remember that it's one thing to use charm and humor to influence the direction of the discussion, but it may not be wise to indulge in blatant manipulation of others.
Money, material resources, relationships and pleasure could be subject to confusion, deception, or unrealistic wishful thinking under this transit. It may seem that what you thought you had (love, friendship, pleasure, money, resources) has suddenly disappeared or isn't as dependable as you thought it was. You might feel disappointed, disillusioned, sad or alone, but this is more likely to be a passing phase than a serious crisis. The question is: what are your secret longings and subtle desires that may be operating unconsciously? These could be clouding your ability to relate to people and situations in your life. Old addictions, depression or idealism may surface as way of dealing with feelings. A better outlet would be to channel your feelings and experiences into creativity, beauty, inspiration and compassion; for example, art, music or helping others.
During this transit, your sense of self and purpose can become merged with what you think, perceive and say. On one hand, this can make for an easy flow of ideas and communication from inside your brain to the external world. It can also increase your perceptions and observations of the world, as you file it all away in your internal database. On the other hand, you may find yourself a bit tongue-tied, as it could be hard to separate your sense of self from your perceptions and ideas enough to find the words to adequately express them. In that case, just observe and go with the flow; the words will come later. It can also be a time when it's not easy to be objective, especially about yourself and how you bring yourself to the world around you. It's like your Being automatically expresses and sets into motion the things you think, perceive and want to say. This can help you to feel like your sense of self is shining effortlessly, but if your thoughts and perceptions are in conflict with other parts of you (e.g., emotions, needs, objectivity) then it might become a time when you act a little too quickly with blinders on. Strive for balance and self-honesty before you act.
Relationships, finances, resources and pleasures could benefit from spontaneously trying a completely different approach. If these areas of your life have been getting a little stale or too routine, this transit could shake things up a little...just enough to make things interesting and breathe some fresh air into your familiar routine. Unexpected income could come your way, or you might discover something you just can't resist buying, or you might have an opportunity to make new social connections. The upside of this transit is that it's possible to break free of old habits and enjoy spontaneous interaction. The downside could come in the form of impulse purchases that are beyond your budget, or behaving a bit recklessly or making snap decisions that you can't live with later. This energy is best used to break free of what restricts you, without shattering the foundation you're standing on.
For up to a week before and after this date, Saturn’s energy is especially intense and strong. You might experience this as physical or mental heaviness or sluggishness. You might find you have to "get real" with some responsibilities, or make some difficult decisions. This can be a turning point in long-term projects and plans that you've been developing over the last 5 months or so. Or, you may start to deal differently with old limitations, either finding ways to move beyond them or finding ways to make peace with them. If you’re dealing with closure or endings in some area of your life, this could be a time when you can finally start to let go and move forward.
It's time to let go of old perceptions and ideas that are now just getting in the way of your ability to see things clearly. This might not be an easy task, because your new point of view might show you something you don't really want to see. It might mean you need to change your mind about something or someone. However, by clearing away the blocks to greater awareness, you can start to reshape the way you see yourself or others or life in general. To do this, you might need to release, share and communicate your observations of the last 6 months or so. Take advantage of this time of transition by doing some writing, or perhaps comparing notes with someone about things you've been mulling over.
You may be forced to make adjustments to relationships and/or finances now, as you face situations in these areas that just don't want to balance out the way you want them to. You may feel a bit like you're in a catch-22 (no-win situation), where the more you try to find balance and harmony, the more you feel like you're chasing your own tail around in circles. This is a time when healing in relationships and financial problems may be difficult to obtain. Harmony in these areas can seem impossible or blocked, yet it is still necessary to keep trying. By trying anyway, it may be possible to find a solution that meets your needs, even if it may not be what you wanted, hoped for or expected. Strive to find a creative solution that draws on your best side.

This Total Lunar Eclipse is visible from Africa and Central Asia. Europe and South America can see it just after moonrise, and Australia and Southeast Asia can see it just before sunrise. It's okay to look directly at a lunar eclipse; you won't hurt your eyes.
Unless your heart, your soul, and your whole being are behind every decision you make, the words from your mouth will be empty, and each action will be meaningless. Truth and confidence are the roots of happiness.
~ Kathleen Pedersen
The quest for truth and meaning is an essential and passionate part of our human spirit! Not only can it bring out the very best we can be (or even thought we could be), it also gets us into more trouble than just about anything else in our human experience.
Sagittarius is the zodiacal archetype that embodies this quest. This being a Fire sign, it is all about our spiritual passion to rise above ourselves, to transcend our everyday existence and find a higher truth and meaning in what we do, who we are and what we can be.
By "spiritual" I don't necessarily mean God or religion, although many people frame it in that context. But everyone has Sagittarius and Jupiter somewhere in their chart—including atheists and die-hard sceptics whose beliefs tend to be defined by doubt rather than faith. But don't underestimate doubt as a basis for belief. Arriving at what looks like truth through a process of elimination can be at least as useful, revealing and valid as through trial-and-error, learning from others (e.g. spiritual texts) or simple intuitive faith.
No matter how you approach it, spirituality is ultimately about having a sense of connection to something greater than yourself. It's about finding something you can believe in. This could be God or Gods, or All That Is, or the Universe, the Collective Unconscious or the Cosmic Muffin. It could be the laws of physics, the laws of nature, or the laws of mathematics. It could be the interdependent web of all existence, or the greater community of humanity. Or maybe you just believe in love or the ultimate goodness of human nature.
Religion is for people who don't want to go to Hell. Spirituality is for people who have already been there.
Whatever, wherever or whoever allows you to find meaning in life, it brings a sense of "this is where the pulse of life is found." This is where you will encounter your experience of spirituality and, through this, connect to the essential spirit of who and what you are. It is where you come alive.
What tends to emerge from that greater connection is a set of beliefs and assumptions about the nature of reality, how life works and what kind of role we humans are meant to play in that. Is the Universe (for want of a better term) benevolent? Indifferent? Sentient? Is life random? Intentional? Predestined? Are we here to learn? To have fun? To repent?
Is there one ultimate Truth? Is truth relative? If I'm right, does that necessarily mean you're wrong? Is there conflict or harmony between subjective truth (valid for the individual) and objective truth (valid for everyone)? Should we help others who are struggling? Or does that interfere with their personal journey, whatever that is?
These are the Big Questions about life, which are explored in the vast territory of Sagittarius. These questions are asked by Jupiter, the planetary ruler of Sagittarius, and its answers are coloured by the sign and house it is in natally, as well as by progression and by transit. Aspects from Jupiter to other planets provide input, food for thought and an expanded perspective.
This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy.
Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.
~ Dalai Lama
Jupiter just recently changed signs (Jun.04), moving into Taurus for a year's stay. The planet of fiery expansion and speculation is now in a Fixed Earth sign that prefers the specific, factual, practical approach to things. While not always the most comfortable fit, it still has an abundance of benefits. (Read my article about Jupiter in Taurus.) So this puts an interesting spin on the upcoming Lunar Eclipse in its sign of Sagittarius.
Any eclipse will bring a penetrating focus into the issues of its sign. By definition, an eclipse (solar or lunar) is about our encounter with Shadow, both literally and figuratively. Psychologically, this is the area of consciousness where unwanted or unfamiliar parts of ourselves are hidden from view.
What we discover when we peer deep into the eclipse's Shadow may not be what we were hoping to find, and our first reaction can be to try to stuff whatever it is back into its dark corner. However, Jupiter is about illumination, enlightenment and expanding our understanding into previously unexplored vistas, so some part of that Shadow is ripe for exposure and acknowledgement.
This Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius asks you to look into the Shadow about your beliefs, assumptions, judgments and your philosophy of life in general. On what do you pin your hopes and prayers? Or, by contrast, where in life do you fear disappointment so much that you are afraid to hope? In that case, you believe in the possibility of a negative, painful outcome more strongly than you believe in a positive, uplifting or fulfilling one. Is it time to look closer at this?
The thing about eclipses is that they can sometimes curtail something that has been gathering light and is starting to shine in your life, only to suddenly become lost in shadow. Since this is a Full Moon, it is a time of completion and fruition. So, you might wind up tripping over something lying around in a dark corner of your life that you're not aware of (or hoped you'd forgotten about), and this gives you a chance to tidy up and make room for more growth. On the other hand, it could also mean that something is coming to completion and you're ready to let go of it to make room for something new to come in and takes its place.
So the next question is where and how is this taking place. Being in Sagittarius, you might find your beliefs, assumptions, biases and understanding are up for an overhaul. You may be carrying around old opinions and viewpoints that are getting in the way of your developing wisdom. So, you may be called upon to weed out the stuff that doesn't fit you anymore and put the rest to work in a new way.
With ruling planet Jupiter in Taurus, it suggests that our quest for truth and understanding about life is now delving into the world of matter to find our answers—physical reality, sensible priorities, concrete evidence and pragmatic logic. This becomes a crossroads where that which you have taken on faith up to now may have to be examined more closely and evaluated in the light of what can be proven or at least mapped onto a more structured grid of understanding.
In other words, what you believe may come under scrutiny or be challenged for how realistic it is. Can you prove it? Can you point to something in the physical or logical world and show how your faith-based beliefs have a basis in reality? Can you apply what you believe to everyday life in a way that is noticeably useful and beneficial?
It does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods or no God.
It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.
~ Thomas Jefferson
Jupiter is trine (120°) to Pluto, so you have added ability to open your eyes and see things as they are, provided you don't try to project or deflect your fears of what you might see. Any tendency to blame, shame or flame others for something you see that you don't like is only likely to come back to you threefold. That's not to be confused with assigning responsibility for something when it's warranted; I'm talking about dumping judgment on someone that isn't balanced with a more realistic perspective of the big picture, including whatever you're contributing to the situation.
Mercury is conjunct the Sun, both in Gemini, at this lunar eclipse. The thrust is toward awareness in this eclipse. Keep your eyes open and just notice what's happening. You can analyze it, talk about it, think about it or write about it—just keep your mind open and focused on acknowledgement. Turning awareness into action comes later. For now, just observe and register it in your awareness. Not all the facts and bits of information are in yet. Don't make the mistake of seeing one little piece of the puzzle and assume you can know the whole puzzle from it. Allow the information to collect before you try to translate it into a conclusion.
Besides Jupiter, we also have Mars in Taurus. Mars in this sign is not the most comfortable, since Taurus slows it down and stubbornly insists that Mars take things one step at a time, rather than charging off in whatever direction its impulsive heart desires. Mars anger can get a bit distorted under these conditions. Anger works best when it is vented cleanly in the moment and then released just as quickly and cleanly. But in Taurus, anger can stuffed into a gunnysack until it finally breaks open and then out pours all the anger that's been stored up.
Mars is currently conjunct the fixed star Algol, at 26° of Taurus. Feeling a little déjà vu-ish? This is a repeat of the Scorpio Full Moon back on May 17th, when the Sun was exactly where Mars is now. This has a few implications. One is that the issues, events or energy that was active back in late May are likely to be reconstituted under this lunar eclipse, with Mars shining a light on that degree again.
However, just to have Mars conjunct Algol is, in itself, a concerning alignment. As we discussed back in May, Algol has a pretty intense and negative reputation. It is often known as "the eye of Medusa" referring to the mythological Gorgon named Medusa, who was cursed by Athene for having violated her temple. Medusa's hair was turned to snakes and anyone looking into her eyes would be turned to stone.
To have Mars—the planet of anger, violence, destruction and upset—conjunct Algol—the fixed star representing the intense and potentially destructive power of the feminine—is a bit of a concern. I say "a bit" because Mars passes this degree every 2 year or so, so this is not a radically unusual occurrence. The world doesn't come to an end every couple of years. ;-) However, this is occurring under a lunar eclipse, which could amplify and intensify this Algol/Mars energy. As a result, we might see events stirred up in the Collective that bring out the conflicting, disruptive or even destructive potential of Sagittarius and Jupiter. Religion, doctrine and dogma, international relations and the distribution of wealth (or lack thereof) are all areas that could get stirred up under this transit.
Do not teach your children never to be angry; teach them how to be angry.
~ Lyman Abbott
On a more personal level, you might find your finances become a little unstable during this time, so a cautious approach to taking financial risks might be wise. If you have been harbouring unconscious or hidden anger, resentment, frustration or hostility, this could be the time when these come tumbling out of the gunnysack.
With Mercury in its own sign of Gemini and opposite the eclipsed Moon, the part of you that needs to be heard could suddenly become very talkative regarding issues where you feel you have suffered injustice, unfairness, deprivation or disappointment. Mercury just loooooves to exchange juicy gossip and get all the dirt, so it would probably be wise to find a safe, protected place to dump all those feelings first, before hurling them out into the public world. Get the raw venting out of your system first, and then let your Inner Grown-up decide what needs to be said and how, where and when.
It's a good idea to be aware that all of this is taking place against the background of the re-formed Cardinal Cross T-square aspect figure. Even though the lunar eclipse doesn't interact strongly with it at the moment, the energies from both the eclipse and the T-square are coexisting in the same universe, and therefore each will add to the intensity of the other.
Saturn is still virtually stationary from having turned direct just 3 days ago. Since it is Saturn having retrograded back close enough to form the T-square again with Uranus and Pluto, this stationary energy has powerful implications for the Cardinal Cross energy. It is like taking the boards of different structures you've been building and aligning them so that they can be nailed together. The final nail is driven in at the upcoming Solar Eclipse in Cancer on July 1st, which forms a Grand Cross figure with Saturn, Uranus and Pluto.
This means you are now starting on the last phase of the transformation you began back in 2008, when Saturn first began its opposition to Uranus. This has been a time of trying to reconcile warring energies or factions that would too often prefer to burn down the forest than to share the territory with the others. This is a battle that has been forming for at least the last 40-50 years (since the Uranus-Pluto conjunction in the mid-1960s), so this latest phase of conflict isn't likely to resolve itself quickly or easily.
However, the current lunar eclipse in Sagittarius, combined with the practical Jupiter in Taurus, will hopefully bring home the need to reach a broader, more philosophical and farther-reaching perspective than has been shared by those factions that have been baring their teeth at the front lines. On the other hand, the extreme hubris of Sagittarius combined with a defiant Mars aligned with Algol could just as easily push the extremes farther apart, fragmenting and splintering the issues so badly that resolution becomes that much harder to achieve.
A man can get discouraged many times but he is not a failure
until he begins to blame somebody else and stops trying.
~ John Burroughs
How this eclipse affects you depends mostly on where it lands in your natal chart and how it interacts with your natal planets. What natal house does this eclipse land in? What beliefs and assumptions, hopes and fears, judgment and blame do you hold about that area of life? For example, in the 7th house, this eclipse is likely to focus on your relationships—any committed one-to-one interactions and connections you have. In the 10th house, it is about your career, your goals in life, your reputation and the sense of authority you carry into the world around you, or how you relate to others as authority figures.
Do you have natal planets in Sagittarius? Or in the house where the eclipse takes place? These planetary parts of your psyche are likely to be affected. For example, if you have the Sun in Sagittarius, you might need to take a deeper look at yourself and your beliefs about who you are and what your life purpose is. If Mars is there, your anger, assertiveness or energy level could be affected.
Where is Jupiter in your chart? Where natal Jupiter is found could also play a part. If Jupiter is in your 6th house, it could come out in health concerns, or it might pull you toward looking at how much you are "walking the walk" in how you apply your beliefs and spiritual attitude.

This overall Lunar-Eclipse-Mars-Cardinal-Cross drama is likely to play out somewhat differently on a personal level than on a global or Collective level. The thing to remember is that even if we cannot turn a corner on getting our collective act together now under these transits, that doesn't mean you can't accomplish this in your personal life.
Here's the question: Where could you benefit by expanding your understanding? Hint: it's usually the place where you are certain that everything would be just peachy perfect if the other guy would just change and be more like you—or better yet, would just find a different solar system to live in. ;-)
Once your awareness becomes a flame, it burns up the whole slavery that the mind has created.
Intuition, sensitive perception, and communication of feelings flow more easily during this transit. Your empathy may be deepened now, as you can be more able to imagine and pick up on what other people feel and need. Because of this, you may also find that it's easier to say difficult things in a sensitive, caring way. However, your open connection to others might also increase the risk of communicating in a hurtful or callous way, if you are not used to treading gently. Your creative imagination is also more accessible now. To take advantage of this, try doing some journal writing, expand your emotional awareness, have some creative fun, or think of ways to make your environment more homey and comfortable.
Your mind is very open to imagination, dreams and compassion under this transit. This can be a very creative time, when ideas flow like a magical river. It can also be easy to get caught up in yearning and fantasizing about your hidden wishes, although it is possible to channel this into creative expression. (e.g., writing poetry, dancing, wistful music, singing in the shower, whatever!) Listening sympathetically to others' problems may come easily now, and you are more likely to get a compassionate response from others about your own problems. However, it may also be difficult to draw clear and firm boundaries with others, since you are more susceptible to the emotional gravity of others. It is ultimately a time for optimism, hope, creativity and intuition, although it's wise to keep at least one foot on the ground.
You may have an abundance of ideas and words to express them under this transit. There is the potential (if you reach for it) to put ideas, facts and thoughts together into a cohesive whole. You may find you can understand the overall patterns in a situation, or you are able to see the Big Picture, better than usual. New insights and a change of perspective may abound, as your stream of consciousness flows abundantly with optimism and visionary possibilities. You may find yourself more talkative than usual, as you try to share and convey the new ideas, inspiration and knowledge coming into your mind. Write down your best ideas for later development, since you may be having too much fun now playing with ideas to want to stop and make them manifest just yet. There is a chance that you may be so elated and confident that you might come across as a bit overbearing or even as a "know-it-all," so be sure to listen too.
This is the first of three formations of the Cardinal Grand Cross. The Cardinal T-Square—Saturn opposite Uranus, T-squared by Pluto—has already been in alignment since early May and will continue until early August. During that time, there are 3 times when a fourth planet goes through Cancer and completes the Grand Cross aspect pattern.
This is the first one, formed with Mercury which brings awareness and the need to focus your intention on how you want to channel, facilitate and utilize the transformative energy of the Cardinal Cross. Clear seeing is essential to change. You will be able to work more constructively and productively with the energy if you are awake! So this is the time to be alert to the changes happening in your life right now. For the few days this transit is in effect, treat it as if the Universe is talking to you or as if you have the private ear of the Universe. The truth is, it is and you do! But this is not something you should take for granted or get cocky about.
With opportunity comes responsibility—if you expect to benefit from this time, you need to invest yourself in the process. That starts with paying attention, acknowledging the synchronicity around you and being willing to see what is really in front of you. You need to "talk the talk" so that you bring your awareness into clearer focus. You might be required to let go of an illusion, assumption, belief or opinion that has felt safe, familiar and comfortable. Your intuition will give you hints and signals about what is needed in order to bring this overall energy into clearer focus. Use Mercury to express and communicate this. You could talk with someone, get insights and ideas to work with (for example, a personal astrology reading), read about it, write about it, sing about it, create with it and express your feelings about it. Just don't miss the opportunity to invest some intentional effort in this energy!
Stability in relationships and finances characterises this transit. You have increased ability to be disciplined about spending and to invest the hard work to maximise your earnings. Your ability to grasp the solid, realistic facts will help you choose wisely in your investments of both money and interaction with others. Commitment and structure are easier to achieve and embrace than change or taking risks. Self-worth can benefit now because you are less inclined to give in to mood swings. However, if you are prone to depression, you might want to be careful you don't become so grounded and stable that you lose touch with your sense of hope and potential. It is a good time to make concrete progress in matters involving beauty, love, harmony and balance. Keep your pleasures simple and humble for maximum benefit.
Flashes of insight can show you new clarity but you might not like the answers you get, since they could disturb your logical perception of what's what. You might get some news or learn come information that shakes you up in some way. This isn't necessarily bad, since this may be necessary to open your mind to something you've been resisting. There's a Higher Truth here that wants to be told (by you or to you), but the way it's phrased can make a big difference in the reaction. There is a risk of "shooting off your mouth before your brains are loaded," as the saying goes, and impulsive or reckless communication and ideas could create more problems than they solve. It will probably help to listen inside yourself first to discover what you really need to say, and then figure out how to say it in a way that doesn't cause unnecessary damage. Strive to shine a light of truth without blinding anyone with it.
Your mental focus and communication now get an injection of healing energy. Cynicism and depression may soften now, as you become more receptive to a more optimistic viewpoint. If you have been caught up in escapism or "stinkin' thinkin'" (thinking you're more in control of your impulses than you really are), you may now find some relief and healing. Mental argument and critical "self-talk" can now find some reconciliation and acceptance that brings some peace of mind. You have increased ability to find the right words and understanding to help others with their problems. Compassion and empathy may be more accessible because you can identify your own experiences with what you see in others. You might also find someone who can give you good advice or support about your own problems – possibly a teacher or mentor – or you could become this to someone else.
This transit brings powerful words and ideas! They require you to strike a balance between personal perceptions and trans-personal implications. Your communication can be more penetrating, forceful or persistent than usual now, and a little will go a long way, so use this ability sparingly and carefully. In the same way, the words and perceptions of others may have a deeper and stronger impact on you than they normally do. This could be a mixed blessing – you may discover some profound insight and psychological truth in what others say to you, but you might also be receiving their unconscious projections too (meaning their perceptions and feedback might say more about them than about you). Deep self-honesty can help you decide what is true and what is being distorted. Avoid reacting on "automatic pilot" and give yourself some mental and psychological breathing room to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
Your physical and mental energy are likely to be more available in Gemini – in fact, maybe a bit too available! You typically have the energy to pursue opportunities and ideas, but this can also make you a bit distracted or shorten your attention span. Inspired ideas can lead to impulsive action, which is great when you want to be decisive, take the initiative or find courage in the moment. However, if your ideas are not well grounded or thought out, you might "shoot first and ask questions later." The more you can focus your mind to go after what you want, the more effective your actions will be. With Mars in Gemini, "the pen is mightier than the sword." When conflict arises, it is more likely to be fought and resolved with words and ideas, than with fists. This is a good time to mentally focus your intent and then act on your ideas.

Happy Solar Return to everyone born in the sign of Cancer! When the Sun enters Cancer, it also marks the Summer Solstice (in North America, the UK, Europe and other places in the northern hemisphere; or the Winter Solstice in Australia and other places in the southern hemisphere). This is the time when we all get to cultivate and nurture the Cancer side of our nature. This includes feelings, needs and nurturing instincts, as well as your connection to home and family, and your most primal sense of belonging. To explore this area of your life, think about your family – are you closely connected to your family-of-origin (the one you grew up with), or do you also have a "chosen family" in adulthood? Who is part of your support system (the people you know you can turn to when you need them)? What people, groups, places or experiences satisfy your need for belonging, which everyone has inside them? Cancer is about our distant past (childhood, ancestry, memories) that influences our current behaviour, motives and methods of getting our emotional needs met. Take this time to find new ways to nurture yourself, to share that nurturing with others, and to ensure that you don't give to others at the expense of not getting what you need.
Your thoughts, ideas and communication need to become structured, rational and discreet, although this may not be easy to achieve. You may have to work extra hard to get your point across now, since others might be resistant to your ideas or may not be familiar with the basic concepts. It is a time to be clear, objective and down-to-earth in your communication and thinking, but equally important to do this without going overboard and becoming rigid, autocratic or over-cautious. If you find yourself stuck in a "glass half empty" frame of mind, you might be sagging under the weight of melancholy ...Or, it might mean you are coming to terms with some hard realities and decisions and feeling the gravity of the implications. But also check to be sure you're not taking yourself and your situation too seriously. By applying your best efforts, this can be a very productive time, especially with anything involving communication, writing, organising or logic.
For up to a week before and after today, you have a chance to discover and work with your blind spots and the hidden motives that trip you up. It may feel like you are spinning your wheels or "shadow-boxing" and not even sure why. You may be fighting a hidden agenda or unconscious motives (yours or someone else's). You might also be trying to apply a concrete solution to an ambiguous situation, and then wondering why it isn't working very well. Responding to conflicts in a passive-aggressive or manipulative way can be tempting under this transit, since you may not know how to take direct and effective action. Resentment might become a defiant way to express toothless anger. Part of the problem may be that you are fighting against your own idealism, and resisting the acceptance that the other person or situation can't be the way you want them to be. Feelings of disappointment or helplessness may trigger much deeper feelings from your unconscious, making it difficult for you to know how to respond effectively in the here-and-now. It will probably help to work on owning your feelings, needs, longings and (hidden) agendas. Being honest with yourself about what's really going on inside you will go a long way toward increasing your empowerment.
Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Hope, optimism and imagination spring eternal right now, which can bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity can become very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision. And you experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.
The Sun now forms the Cardinal Grand Cross that was channelled through Mercury about a week ago (Jun.18-21). This one brings a deeper and steeper challenge, since it involves your sense of identity and life purpose. How can you adjust your life direction to allow, encourage and embrace the vast changes that are taking place over the next few years? You already started to do this last year. It's not that you "flunked the test" just because the challenge is back again. It's that this is a long-term process of growth and change, which is taking place both personally and collectively. That means it takes time, so resist the urge to be overly hard on yourself. However, it is time to "get real" with what you want to do with this energy.
So, how are you prepared to "walk the walk?" Under the Mercury version of this aspect pattern, you were called on to "talk the talk" and hone your awareness to see clearly what is possible. Under the Sun's rays, you are asked to apply your will power and energy to take action in the direction of your choice. This might be a major step forward, like launching a project or making a commitment. Or, it could be a symbolic or small step forward, like doing one thing that takes you in the direction of your aims.
The intention with which you do this is important, because this will involve the upcoming Solar Eclipse in Cancer on July 1st. This is why getting your mind clear under the Mercury version of this was so important. How can you focus your intention clearly if your mind is cluttered with confusion, ambiguity, mixed feelings and worry about what will happen. Of course these are natural feelings that can come up—you don't have to become perfect in order to utilize the Cardinal Cross energy! But by becoming clear in your mind about what you want, what's important to you, and what all the different voices inside you are saying, you can see your way through these so that they don't trip you up unexpectedly. If you find any of them getting in your way, then perhaps this is the step most important to take right now—to work with that issue, whatever it is. A personal reading is an excellent and powerful resource to help you do that, so contact me about booking a reading with me.
This is a time when your understanding of the Big Picture and your place within it has the potential to click into place. As a result, your confidence and self-esteem can be quite high right now. Your ability to see opportunities and possibilities more clearly can produce an experience of being "lucky." Your insight into life and the world around you may be especially bright, optimistic and inspired. This is a "feel-good" transit, when your sense of self can seem to expand and become free. You may feel especially connected to spiritual energy during this time. Just be careful that all this self-assurance and "knowing" doesn't backfire, by overestimating the extent of your knowledge or underestimating the reaction of your audience. It is possible to become a bit self-indulgent under this transit, so be careful not to overdo it. Beyond a reasonable caution, this is a transit to enjoy!
Your world may experience a bit of a shake-up right now, as the Universe decides it's time to make things "interesting." This is a wake-up call, designed to loosen you up from the ways you have become too habitual, stuck or inhibited. The "radical rascal" in you may be itching to come out and stir up trouble, which on one hand might be necessary but also very disruptive and possibly even destructive. Be alert to new insights and opportunities disguised as accidents or crises. Your usual sense of self and purpose may become somewhat unsettled right now, but a space is likely being cleared to make room for new growth and possibilities. If you're looking to break old habits or break free of old restrictions, this may be the time – but it could create a mess that you'll have to clean up later. Resist the urge to rebel just for the sake of doing something different, and aim instead to break free of old forms of self-expression and ideals that don’t work for you anymore. Expect the unexpected and then surf the shock-wave.
This is a time when you may find that your recent efforts to mend and heal the chronic struggles in your life start to come together. You likely have the confidence now to try new solutions, or at least to approach problems from a different angle that sheds new light on the situation. Some of this progress may come from daring to walk your own path, or from finding the courage to face the hidden shadow of your worries and weaknesses (the hidden benefit that those worries give you). There may be a variety of different struggles and wounds in your life that could benefit from this kind of healing, although it can be tempting to let this transit pass by without taking advantage of it. Strive to reach a midpoint between merely dipping your toe in troubled waters and thinking that is enough, versus jumping in the deep end and marinating in it.
You have an opportunity to move forward through inspired action. This can bring creative problem solving to any conflicts or challenges that are currently in your life. Now is the time to think outside the box and experiment with trying out new responses, actions and directions. It may be easier to be spontaneous and even to act "out of character." If this is something you easily go overboard with, you might want to find ways to channel this constructively. The idea is to be refreshingly spontaneous, not recklessly impulsive. On the other hand, if you have trouble kicking up your heels and being free and unfettered, this transit can be used to get you moving a bit better. If you don't use this energy constructively or consciously, you might wind up feeling somewhat erratic or restless. Find something exciting, inspiring or unusual to spend your energy on.
Who owns the power? This is a time when you may be called upon to stand up to a situation or person who pressures you to dance to their tune instead of your own. This is a chance to assert and empower yourself in new ways, putting into practice the inner strength you've developed in the last 6 months. The trick is to face the situation or person while rooted in inner honesty and authenticity, rather than trying to annihilate the enemy using overkill. Strive to negotiate (or struggle) together using just enough force to establish a workable balance of power, without either of you being nuked in the process. Also, be open to the possibility that your "opponent" might be holding up a mirror, which is showing you something about yourself that you may not want to acknowledge. That doesn't necessarily make your opponent right and you wrong, but there might be something for you to learn from the situation. If you are in a situation that doesn't involve an "opponent" as such, there may still be an aspect of your environment that is holding up a difficult mirror, requiring you to find a more centred and authentic point of inner power. It is by finding new balance within this kind of dynamic, whatever the circumstances, that transformation can be found.
It may be time to confront issues in your life that involve how/why you get hurt by others, how you yourself hurt others, and how healing can take place in either of these situations. Your awareness of this may due to a conflict in your life, but this can be a valuable learning experience for you, more-so than usual. Part of the problem may be that you need to tread your own path but are avoiding this for whatever reasons – perhaps circumstances compel you to satisfy others' expectations, or perhaps you are still struggling to muster the courage to find and walk your own path. Whatever the reasons, this transit may give you a push that will help to steer you in a healing direction, possibly by showing you how and why the path you have been on does not lead to where you want to go. If you start to feel overwhelmed, take some time out from the stress to get re-centered and grounded.
This is a good time to let go of the "things" you don't need anymore. It's a time to release your creativity and transform them into new resources and assets. This could mean cleaning out your closets and selling the discards in a yard sale, for example. You might decide to change your hair style or something else about your appearance. Perhaps you discover that you're making a different impression on people than you intended, and this leads to a revision of your social skills. Or you could get feedback from someone close to you that challenges you to change your self-image. Something (or someone) that has been prominent in your life – in relationships, pleasure, partnerships, finances, possessions, beauty or appearance – is ready to be let go. You might need to say good-bye to someone you've been close to because the relationship isn't working anymore – or you might find you're able to let go of feelings that have been blocked and give yourself to a connection with someone. You might simply assimilate it into the background where it is no longer "front and centre," or you might need to cut ties altogether. Or, you could be ready to express something that has been brewing for a while, like creative self-expression or giving someone feedback. "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" (as your grandmother used to say), but be on the lookout for something that is ready to subside from your priority list.
