You may find something quite different underneath what they appear to be on the surface. For example, anger is often driven by fear or sadness. It's important to identify and understand what is pushing up from under your surface feelings and perceptions, since that is what will ultimately steer your course. If you're driving on a flat tire, it won't matter how much you compensate for the wobbly steering by holding the steering wheel tighter or changing speed – none of this will put air back in the tire. And if you can solve the underlying issue, you won't have the surface problem anymore.

The thing is, we tend to cling to our problems. If you've been dealing with a long-time issue, it gets pretty exhausting after a while. It can seem like you have no energy to spare to look into any underlying problem, so you pour your energy into "managing" the problem, which only gets worse and drains more of your energy. You might also be afraid that what you'll find down there is an even worse problem that can't be fixed and now you have a bigger monster on your hands that can't be controlled. The saddest thing is that there is a more authentic and beautifully human You hidden underneath all the fear and shame and self-doubt. That's why it's important to keep finding the courage to dig down below it – otherwise, your efforts to be free of it will ultimately keep you trapped.

The digging that you do now and over the next several weeks will have far-reaching implications and influence. This is a process of transformation, where you can bring out your true, beautiful self by shedding outer layers of your self-image. Be careful about finding or manufacturing what looks like a more authentic self, which is really just another layer of artificial self-image. That doesn't make you a bad person, but if you aren't able to dig down to the bedrock, it might indicate you aren't ready. That's okay too. As you work with a mask of who you want to be, this can help you believe there is a real self underneath that, which is worth believing in. Keep the faith, but also watch out for false hope that can keep you lost in a detour off your main road.
