"What's a Solar Eclipse?"

"What's a New Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience LEO energy in your life.

This eclipse can be seen in arctic Canada, Greenland, Siberia, Mongolia and China. To a lesser extent, also Europe, Middle East and other parts of Asia. Remember, you must never look directly at a solar eclipse without proper eye protection! NASA has more information on this eclipse.

The New Moon in Leo is usually your time to shine! It is a time to celebrate your existence, renew your belief in yourself and discover ways to share your best qualities with the world around you. It is a time to explore who you are and feel good about yourself.

However, this is no ordinary New Moon it's a Solar Eclipse! This is a New Moon where the Sun, Moon and Earth form a straight line so precise that the Moon casts a shadow on the Earth. This typically happens only twice a year, the last time being Feb.06.2008.

A Solar Eclipse is a time of much deeper transformation than a regular New Moon. Both a New Moon and a Solar Eclipse will begin a period of change and unfolding. However, the energy released at a Solar Eclipse is active much longer than the one month following a regular New Moon.

Eclipses have a reputation for bringing disruption and problems. Although this can be true, it helps to remember that nothing is ever all-good or all-bad. The calamity that can sometimes emerge at eclipse time may cause loss, although this is usually a natural part of the continual recycling of life. That is not meant to sound glib, if you are going through an especially painful time. However, it is especially at times of loss and crisis that you need to remember that life never stands still; nor does it move in a straight line. It will help to keep yourself balanced between the reality of your immediate situation and a bigger picture that includes hope, understanding, acceptance and faith in some larger purpose.

In the case of this Solar Eclipse, there is an opportunity to explore your identity and self-expression, although you may be challenged and tested in your courage and valour. It is a time to discover who you are underneath the more socially acceptable face that you show the world. What are you really made of?

However, with the eclipse conjunct Mercury, this is not a pass-fail kind of test. Rather, it is a "learning test," through which you can gain insight by observing your reactions, choices, priorities and values. What really lies in your heart of hearts? When push comes to shove, what do your actions show is most important to you?

Try looking in the direction of Uranus (which is in a sesqui-square aspect to the eclipse). How you feel about spontaneity, chaos, liberation and freedom? Before you say, "Ya sure, bring it on!," check to see if there might be some hidden part of you that prefers stability and predictability to some extent. There may be an unexpected price to pay for your freedom and independence right now. Or these qualities might be too much too fast and create as many problems as they solve. Surprises and changes might stir the pot a little too much. With Saturn in a semi-sextile aspect to the Eclipse, you may find that spontaneity and rebellion need to be balanced and paced with some consistency and stability, although it might take some practice to find the right balance.

Regardless of what area of life these things emerge for you, remember that how you react and respond to them is where your true learning lies. Watch for stress-related health issues, as well as a tendency to draw premature conclusions in an attempt to hurry the long-term transformation process. A personal astrology reading will give you more insight about how this eclipse is likely to affect you and how you can work constructively and creatively with it.

These themes are likely to unfold and evolve over the coming year, possible the next 2-3 years. A Solar Eclipse has a life cycle that reaches fruition at the Lunar Eclipse 6 months later, and then reaches completion at the Solar Eclipse 6 months after that. However, there is another intriguing view put forward by Celeste Teal in her book, Eclipses: Predicting World Events & Personal Transformation. Teal shows how the energy released at the eclipses is activated when the eclipse position receives transits from other planets.

The Solar Eclipse will receive transits from the Sun, Mars and Jupiter on the following dates. These dates (give or take a few days to a few weeks) may activate or amplify the eclipse energy and allow you to take another step in the unfolding long-term process.

Aug.04 Mercury opposite North Lunar Node (18:32 of Leo/Aquarius)

It's time to let go of old perceptions and ideas that are now just getting in the way of your ability to see things clearly. Alternatively, this could also be a time when you need to release, share and communicate your observations of the last several months. You may be in a more rational or analytical frame of mind now, so take advantage of it by doing some writing, or perhaps comparing notes with someone about things you've been mulling over.

Aug.04 Mercury opposite Chiron (09:53 of Leo/Aquarius) (Aug.05 in AU)

You could experience extra sensitivity, compassion or sympathy toward the problems and suffering of others under this transit. One possibility is that you encounter more people than usual who are struggling with problems that are brought to your attention. Another possibility is that you might be on the receiving end of the results of their suffering -- for example, if someone takes out their frustration or discouragement on you. Yet another option is that you may encounter others who are sensitive to and able to offer help for your own ongoing problems and struggles. You may be in a special position to have insight into the problems of others, or they into yours. Exchange of information, experiences, ideas and theories could be useful. You might also experience a difficult interaction with someone that raises an old issue about style of communication (for example, words might be spoken with good intentions that instead cause hurt). This is a good time to listen and observe, and you might catch a glimpse of some ironic or paradoxical truth.

Aug.05 Venus trine Pluto (28:48 of Leo/Sagittarius)

Close one-on-one connections with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) will tend to gravitate to a deeper, more intense level now. Instead of automatically doing the diplomatic, "nice" thing, you may find it is more fulfilling to share more of your authentic feelings. It may be possible now to connect with people on a deeper level, while still ensuring that your interests are equally balanced with theirs. The trick is to do this without trying to control or overpower the other person, and it may be easier to avoid those traps now. You could make some deeply intimate connections with people under this transit. Financial dealings with other people may also go smoothly, although it might be wise to get clear confirmation that you're both on the same page about the fine print.

Aug.06 Venus enters Virgo (until Aug.30)

Under this transit, it is possible to fall in love with purity, precision and analysis. It is a time to invest in health, efficiency, and your contribution to the world around you. The beauty is in the details, as you embrace a labour of love in your life. Just don't get so enamoured with pristine splendour that you get lost in perfectionism and unable to accept the natural imperfection that exists in all life and humanity. Each of us is the Universe's perfect child, but we are also in a state of becoming and growing and are therefore likely to make human mistakes. Remember that we're here for the journey, as much as the destination. This part of the journey takes us into service and devotion, whether that is focused on another person or on ourselves.

Aug.06 Mercury opposite Neptune (23:05 of Leo/Aquarius) (Aug.07 in AU)

Inspired thinking, mental fantasy, imaginative ideas and lucid dreams are likely during this transit. This can result in enormous creativity that sees inspiration and magical ideas in the world around you (be sure to write them down to develop later). Your communication may be unusually intuitive and inspiring now. However, it can also be a time when your perceptions about reality are a bit off and coloured by wishful thinking and irrational conclusions. Doing a reality check with a trusted friend or advisor is a good idea, especially if you are trying to make important decisions right now. But be sure to explore any non-rational or irrational thinking, since the veil between the conscious and unconscious mind is thin now and you can learn much by observing your thoughts and perceptions.

Aug.06 Mars opposite Uranus (22:02 of Virgo/Pisces) (Aug.09 in AU)

Your energy is likely to be rather unpredictable, fluctuating or just plain "wonky" under this transit. Your moods could swing back and forth in reaction to outside circumstances that trigger your feelings buried under the surface. In particular, anger, confidence and impulsive desires could suddenly appear and disappear for no apparent reason. If you feel your freedom is being taken away or if you think your individuality is becoming lost in the Collective shuffle, you might feel the urge to abruptly push against whoever seems to be blocking you. This can come across as arbitrary rebellion, and it may not be easy for you or others to understand where this is coming from inside you. It might be a good idea to take some time out to focus inward and find out what's really going on under the surface, especially if these reactions are starting to spiral out of control. On the other hand, this doesn't have to be a "negative" energy. You might also feel more spontaneous than usual and be willing to try new things more easily than you usually do. It can be a time to discover new courage to venture beyond your comfort zone of what's familiar. Flash arguments could clear the air, leaving the way clear to make a fresh start. Essentially, this transit tends to be a bit of a roller coaster ride, which can have you howling in protest or shrieking with excitement...or both!

Aug.09 Mercury trine Pluto (28:44 of Leo/Sagittarius) (Aug.10 in AU)

It is possible to dive deep below the surface now, in your perception of situations, other people and yourself. If you have been working on trying to understand the deeper motivations and dynamics of what is happening in your life, there could be a breakthrough now. The light may finally go on in the darker corners that have eluded you, and your penetrating insight. You could find a way to articulate these perceptions and speak your mind in a way that is unusually powerful or intense (so be careful you don't inadvertently blow your audience out of the water). This transit can bring an opportunity to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions or ineffective forms of communication. Try writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit. This is the only exact pass for this transit, since Pluto was out of range when Mercury came through this area two months ago.

Aug.10 Mercury enters Virgo (until Aug.28/29)

Mercury moves into its own sign of Virgo, where it brings an awareness of health, healing, work and service. This is a good time to be analytical, methodical and focused on improvement. But be careful not to get so lost in details or perfectionism that you can't see the forest for the trees. This energy is well spent by finding ways to make your work and the pursuit of your goals more efficient and effective. Try organising your activities better and prioritizing them according to what works well and what needs improvement and how. This is especially true for any health issues that keep getting pushed to the back burner. Whatever your plans, this transit can help you organise an effective strategy to move you forward.

Aug.10 Chiron conjunct North Lunar Node (18:34 of Aquarius) (Aug.11 in AU)

What does healing mean for you right now? What wounds do you carry that are ready to be healed? These might be physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual or social. Or perhaps there is a situation in your life that probably can't be completely resolved, but could probably be managed with the right strategies? Or, maybe you are in a situation where you feel you have to be something you're not, or where you don't seem to entirely fit in with the surrounding environment. This is a time when these issues are likely to be more prominent than usual. You might find people who can help you work through these areas. Or, perhaps you will encounter people who bring out that woundedness in you by aggravating those wounds somehow, giving you the dubious but authentic opportunity to learn more about what you need to heal and get past those problems. Remember that Chiron heals by giving you a nudge in the direction of the problem, rather than away from it, so if it seems like things are getting worse, you may be closer to finding a remedy than you realise. Try looking at the situation from a different perspective.

This is the second of 3 passes of this transit: Jun.02, Aug.10 and Oct.16. This pass of the transit is most strongly in effect from mid-July to the beginning of September, although overall it unfolds from March until December. This pass focuses on revisiting the themes, issues, observations and insights you've been gathering since May-June about how you (or others) are wounded, how that affects both your life and the collective lives around you. Dig a little deeper and find out what lies underneath the surface observations and issues. Underneath the chaos, unpredictability or craziness may lie a dynamic that you are responding to that runs through the group or collective you're involved with.

Aug.10 Sun opposite Chiron (18:33 of Leo/Aquarius) (Aug.11 in AU)

This transit can bring a challenge to your sense of personal purpose versus the trans-personal vision of possibilities. This could play out in many areas; for instance, spirituality, career, life direction, physical or emotional healing, etc. Perhaps you are feeling a conflict between what you want to gain on a personal level versus a higher vision of what you could be capable of. The problem is that to reach for greater possibilities, you have to move beyond your comfort zone. There is a certain amount of risk and sacrifice involved in any kind of growth. You might be concerned that moving into a larger context could chip away at self-esteem, making you worried about feeling small or inadequate. (You're not!) You could be concerned that you'd have to give up personal rewards in order to achieve that higher vision. Regardless of how this plays out in your life, the quest to find a balance you can live with -- between what is and what could be -- is the purpose of this transit. Later it will be time to take further action, but for how it is important to grapple with the dynamics of your situation which will lead to a decision.

Aug.10 Sun opposite North Lunar Node (18:34 of Leo/Aquarius) (Aug.11 in AU)

This transit could bring a creative release or a letting-go of a piece of your self-image that you don't need anymore. This transit only happens close to the eclipses, so its energy is likely to come out around the timing of those events more noticeably. It is a time to let go of something in yourself that is no longer serving you well. This could be a negative belief about yourself, or perhaps dropping an inhibition that has eroded your self-confidence. By letting go of something, this can open up new channels of expressive and creative energy, releasing new energy into the world around you. Follow your heart!

Aug.15 Sun Opposite Neptune (22:51 of Leo/Aquarius)

For a few days, you are face to face with the boundless universe! This could come to you in a number of ways, from creative inspiration to vivid dreams to enchanted encounters with great mystery. There is a tension now between clarity of purpose and infinite vision; between being centred in yourself versus being connected to the Great Unknown; and/or between personal independence and autonomy versus blurred boundaries with a person or situation. If you lose your bearings, you could feel some depression, lethargy or confusion. Your dreams, longings and expectations may be rooted more in wishful thinking than reality right now, which could lead to disappointment or disillusionment. It's a good idea to do a reality check with a trusted friend if you need to make any important decisions. On the other hand, you are also able to see your hopes, dreams and illusions more clearly than usual, reflected back through other people or the outside world. It may be like looking in a cosmic mirror that shows you what's going on in your subconscious. Just remember that it may be hard to tell which is the real thing and which is the mirrored reflection. Just like a dream, you might get better insight by interpreting them intuitively rather than literally. Try expressing your experiences, feelings and perceptions in ways that are poetic, artistic, creative and non-rational.

Aug.13-15 Mercury-Venus-Saturn Multiple Conjunction (9 degrees of Virgo)

Do you know where you're going? Do you know how you're going to get there? In order to arrive at the destination of your choosing, it's important that you discover the formula that will result in what you want to create in your life. This is too important to leave this to pure creative thought. You can't rely entirely on attracting what you want through charm, wit or even the assumption that you've earned it. You will likely find it helpful to combine these qualities. Use your creative ideas, your ability to plan ahead, your natural magnetism and your social skills to discover what your most effective route is from "here" to "there." To do this, don't be afraid to rethink your values, priorities and strategy, and revise them to fit your circumstances. Compromises and sacrifices made now can allow you to avoid getting stuck in perfectionism.

This combination of energies is in effect throughout most of August, reaching their peak on Aug.13 and Aug.15. Venus and Mercury catch up with each other on Aug.21, although by that time Saturn is far behind them. This could be when you can let your creativity, curiosity and social connections fly, after having done the groundwork with Saturn earlier.

Aug.13 Venus conjunct Saturn (09:15 of Virgo) (Aug.14 in AU)

The serious structure and responsibility of Saturn combines with the desire for pleasure, beauty and material abundance in Venus. This can be a good time to make concrete plans about financial matters (e.g., investments, budgeting, purchases, etc.), although this will work best if you do some serious research first, rather than simply going for whatever seems to "feel good." This is a time to begin a process of commitment, whether that involves developing your resources to achieve a certain goal, or negotiating the terms of a relationship or partnership. However, in order to clear the way for new commitments to flourish down the road, sometimes old commitments must be brought to a close first. So this may also be a time when previous involvements or plans may come to an end, especially if they no longer fulfil your needs or lack enough potential to reach your desired goals. In a similar way, you might find yourself blocked from being able to move forward in the areas of relationships, finances or pleasures. These areas may require some reworking or reconsideration before you're ready to proceed.

Aug.15 Mercury conjunct Saturn (09:31 of Sign)

It's time to take a serious look at the circumstances and situations in your life. This transit may not exactly be "party time" but it's a great transit to have when you need to take a dispassionate, objective, clear view of life. You may be called upon to make a decision about something. For example, you might need to commit yourself to a particular plan of action, or start developing plans toward a particular goal. In either case, it may be necessary to limit or let go of other options. You might come to the conclusion that something has run its course and it's time to leave it behind -- like an opinion or project or mindset. It's a time when your perception, thoughts and words may not be exciting, imaginative or entertaining, but you're probably more able to be clear, grounded decisive and hard working.

Sabian Symbol for Aquarius 25: A butterfly with the right wing more perfectly formed.

Sabian Symbol for the
Lunar Eclipse ~ Full Moon in Aquarius

Aquarius 25

A butterfly with the right wing more perfectly formed.

This Sabian Symbol ("What's a Sabian Symbol?") gives important clues about its meaning. The butterfly is a clear symbol of the emergence from a long process of transformation. It represents the new You that has survived, thrived and transcended hardship and change.

That metamorphosis is not always without its imperfections, although these could be seen as either handicaps or unique benefits. Balance is important, but is not necessarily the same thing as symmetry.

The right-hand side of things are associated with the logical, sequential, rational approach to life. (Note, however, that the "left brain" actually performs the logical, analytical functions of the brain, yet governs the right side of the body. Confused? Learn more here.)

A butterfly with a more perfectly formed right wing suggests an evolution that has resulted in extra development of one's analytical and rational abilities.

Dane Rudhyar points out that butterflies also symbolize the "spiritual body" and that therefore this symbol suggests "a strong process of conscious individualization." (An Astrological Mandala)

Marc Edmund Jones sees this as a symbol of our capacity to overcome and compensate for handicaps through our uniqueness. (The Sabian Symbols in Astrology)

On the other hand, it's all relative as to whether this is a blessing or a sign of imbalance. Lynda Hill points out that this symbol could warn of the overuse of your rational, analytical abilities, leaving behind your intuition and creative wisdom. (360 Degrees of Wisdom)

Which is it for you? Perhaps the lunar eclipse is saying it's time to assess how well balanced (or not) your life is. Since the eclipse is in Aquarius, this would probably focus especially on the balance between who you are as an individual versus who you are in terms of the groups you participate in.

For example, the groups might include your work environment, your family, your friends, your religious or spiritual community, or other group activities. How much are you able to display your uniqueness in these areas? Are you perhaps setting yourself apart from the rest of the group a bit too much and losing the benefits of its membership? These are things to ponder over the coming months.

Aug.16 LUNAR ECLIPSE FULL MOON in AQUARIUS (24:21 of Aquarius)

What's a Lunar Eclipse?

"What's a Full Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience AQUARIUS energy in your life.

This is only a Partial Eclipse, so the Moon won't become as dim and reddish as during a Total Lunar Eclipse, but still worth catching.

This eclipse is visible throughout Africa, eastern Europe, the Middle East, western Russia and India. Maximum visibility is centered on Madagascar.

China and Australia can see it a bit as the Moon sets and the Sun rises. Western Europe, Iceland, Greenland, the northeast tip of North America and most of South America will see it a bit as the Moon rises and the Sun sets.

Check your local media for the time range when it is most visible in your area. It's okay to look directly at a Lunar Eclipse; it won't hurt your eyes.!

Ordinarily this would be a Full Moon in Aquarius assuming it's even possible to use the words "Aquarius" and "ordinary" together in the same sentence. ;-) However, this is a Lunar Eclipse, which means its energy is unusually powerful. Astronomically, the Moon moves through the shadow cast by the Earth, turning the otherwise bright white Full Moon into an orange or red ball for a few hours.

What does it all MEAN though? In general, if a Full Moon in Aquarius likes to shake things up a bit, a Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius wants to shake things up a lot! Aquarius energy wants to bring some creative chaos that will allow some breathing room into the places where we are over-structured, are constrained by habit, or where we coast through life on "autopilot."

Aquarius has a vision of the future that reaches toward freedom, breaking free of convention and inviting the unexpected. It is the brilliant genius that shines through the disruptive and unpredictable events in our lives. Without that disruption, we would eventually become trapped in the monotony of conformity and the tyranny of certainty.

You could feel the urge to break free of old ways of doing things, like old attitudes or habits. Commitments that have outgrown their lifespan might need to be reconsidered. Goals and ambitions whose time have come and gone could be swept away to make room for new ideas and possibilities.

On the other hand, if you've been resisting making a commitment in some area of your life, this eclipse could push you off the fence and insist that you make a choice. A goal that you've been considering for a while might suddenly become a burning ambition when an unexpected opportunity comes along. These changes might feel like they demand more from you than you had expected, or might require you to do things differently than you'd planned. However, by "thinking outside the box" you can exercise your creative genius and make things even better than you had envisioned.

The Moon is conjunct Neptune at the Lunar Eclipse. The urge to break free of conventions could take on an idealistic, even sacred aura. You could feel a deep longing for complete release from those old ways, wanting to surrender to some force greater than yourself. Or, you might feel like you're being swept away by that force without much choice in the matter.

Maybe there is a part of you that has wanted to let go and disconnect from some situation, relationship, job, group, habit, commitment, inhibition, wish or belief. Perhaps you've held on and tried to delay it as long as possible, feeling you weren't ready for change yet. This eclipse could be your cue to come to terms with this struggle and make some changes that will release some of the stress you've been under.

Neptune's role in the eclipse could also bring out your deepest wishes, dreams, visions, hopes and imagination. Your creativity and openness are likely to be far greater now. The up-side is that you can get past your inhibitions more easily, which can open up new possibilities that were being blocked. The down-side is that you could also be more vulnerable to deception and illusion. Belief in magical possibilities could exceed the bounds of good judgment, if you don't keep yourself balanced with a strong sense of self.

The eclipse chart also contains a conjunction between Saturn, Mercury and Venus in Virgo, which are all in trine aspect to Jupiter. This combination of energies could provide some critical thinking, healthy skepticism and realistic judgment that can help to balance Neptune's drift into unquestioning faith.

There is also a very close Mars-Pluto square at the time of the eclipse, contributing a driving sense of urgency, intensity and force. Power struggles could emerge that play out over the coming months, even the next few years. These struggles may well have their roots in the Mars Retrograde cycle that occurred between Nov.15.2007 and Jan.30.2008. You may recall that Mars was opposite Pluto during that time, creating some rather intense issues related to power, aggression and control. Mars will reach the conjunction with Pluto at the end of this year, on Dec.28.2008, completing a 2-year cycle that began in Jan.2007.

This can be the final push in whatever learning process you have been in since Jan.2007 that is now showing the results of that learning. How has your life evolved over the last year and a half? How have you dealt with themes of courage, empowerment, aggression, and the management of energy or anger? What situations have you had to push forward with, even when you weren't sure you could make it? Were there times when the obstacles were just too difficult or painful to get past? This doesn't have to be like a pass/fail exam, but it is a time to learn something about the times you succeeded in reaching your goals, as well as the times when you fell short of them. Perhaps you took on more than you could realistically handle? Or maybe you were able to reach a different kind of goal after abandoning your original destination?

The lunar eclipse urges you to take a detached look at the events of the last year and a half. Rather than judging yourself in all-or-nothing terms, look at the whole picture. Look especially at how the results of your actions and ambitions may have affected the world around you in ways you might not have realized, for better or for worse. It's time to muster your courage, confidence and conviction, and take a stand based on what you've gained in your struggles of the last year or so.

A personal reading can help you find a healthy balance if you get locked into too much caution, or lost in the lure of enchantment, or stuck in "rebel-mode" and unable to find a satisfying connection with the world around you. (Find out more.) The important thing to remember is to trust the inherent wisdom of the process, but also that you are required to be an active participant in that process.

Celeste Teal's book, Eclipses: Predicting World Events & Personal Transformation, shows how eclipse energy becomes activated even years after the eclipse takes place, creating an unfolding process of transformation and growth. The table below gives the transits to the Lunar Eclipse. Around these dates (give or take a few days or weeks) the eclipse energy is likely to be activated, bringing the eclipse themes into your life and urging you to take another step in the growth process.

Aug.16 Venus trine Jupiter (13:18 of Virgo/Capricorn) (Aug.17 in UK, AU)

Your luck and opportunity to attract money, love, resources and self-esteem are high right now. The flow of attraction (whether that is magnetizing people, things or opportunities) is riding a strong current right now. You could find it easier than usual to get the resources and abundance for whatever you need right now. On the other hand, "your eyes may be bigger than your stomach" (as mother used to say), meaning your desire may magnify your sense of need beyond what is wise. You may be tempted to spend, flirt or bluff your way through situations, preferring to ignore or avoid hardship, boundaries or drudgery. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but be careful you don't get your hopes up so high that you set yourself up for disappointment or make promises you can't keep. It's probably wise to balance this easy flowing energy with some discretion and good judgement.

Aug.17 Mars square Pluto (28:38 of Virgo/Sagittarius)

This can be a volatile combination of energies, which can generate enormous stress and conflict, but can also motivate you go beyond your perceived limitations. The biggest dangers with this transit include obsessive control, violence in response to frustration, and natural reactions of anger being blown out of proportion into rage. However, if you are able to harness this energy and put it to productive use, it can fuel your ambitions and drive you to push past the barriers that are in your way (including your own discouragement or lethargy). There can be a fine line, though, between empowering yourself with determination and courage versus forcing the issue in a way that creates more problems than it solves. And there is a difference between being obsessively attached to the outcome versus discovering that you have more courage, strength and tenacity than you thought you did, when your back is against the wall. Sexual tension can be strong under this transit, so it is wise to use some good judgment about whether or how to act on that. Power struggles with others can become very intense, so strive to be clear in yourself about what you really want and how you can assert your interests without inflicting the emotional equivalent of nuclear war.

Aug.17 Mercury trine Jupiter (13:14 of Virgo/Capricorn) (Aug.18 in UK, AU)

This transit can make you quite talkative and flooded with ideas, along with those around you. Your stream of consciousness can flow abundantly with optimism and visionary possibilities. Write down your best ideas for later development, since you may be having too much fun now playing with ideas to want to stop and make them manifest just yet. Your outlook is usually optimistic and open-minded under this transit, although it might simply neutralize an already pessimistic frame of mind. You are likely to be more open to spiritual or philosophical perspectives, being more able to see yourself as part of something greater than yourself. You might even find that luck comes your way because you are more receptive to opportunities and possibilities.

Aug.19 Mars enters Libra (until Oct.04)

This is a time when aggression, anger and directness may have to be expressed gently, diplomatically and gracefully. Libra is not the most comfortable sign for Mars, since his typically sharp-edged and forceful nature becomes blunted and filtered through Libran softness and tact. It's a bit like dressing Star Trek's "Worf" in a tutu. ;-) However, when these energies combine and work well together, what can emerge is the passion to fight for justice and fairness. This is "the fisted hand in the velvet glove," and can create situations in which you must respond more like a charming but crafty ambassador than a brute force boxer. On the other hand, with force, aggression and directness somewhat blocked or unavailable as options, it may be difficult to respond decisively or purposefully to conflict and challenge. You need to rely more on your wits than your impulses, and strive for a win-win solution than a clear victory.

Aug.21 Sun Trine Pluto (28:35 of Leo/Sagittarius)

Your sense of purpose is strong now, as you are able to tap into a deeper level of energy and determination. Your personality is likely to be more forceful now, which can be great if you need to make a strong impression but perhaps not so much in situations requiring delicacy or subtlety. Your ability to see below the surface of things is especially clear, and it may be possible to unearth secrets or get at the core of unconscious patterns (yours or others'). This is a time when your personal presence may come across as somewhat "larger than life," so you need to remember that a little goes a long way during this transit. This could be a time when you suddenly find the strength to stand up and assert your personal power in a situation that has felt overwhelming or discouraging. On the other hand, if you are still struggling to learn how to own your power, without using nuclear bombs to make your point, you may still feel a bit overwhelmed or daunted by this transit. In that case, take smaller steps and don't try to push the river.

Aug.21 Mercury conjunct Venus (19:01 of Virgo)  (Aug.22 in AU)

Social connections, diplomatic communication and receptive awareness mark this transit. It can be a great time to negotiate contracts or agreements because the communication can usually flow easily. Focus your awareness on achieving a mutual balance between you and the other person. A win-win solution is especially easy to achieve now -- so much so, in fact, that it might be tempting to only say what you think the other person wants to hear (which may or may not be wise). This can also be a time of appreciating and expressing beauty, pleasure and sensuality. If there's someone you want to get closer to (in terms of romance, friendship, business, partnership, or even an adversary!), talking gently and listening receptively can be the key that unlocks the door. You may also get new creative ideas from your interactions with people or from observing them.

Aug.22 Sun enters Virgo (until Sep.22) (enters Aug.23 in AU)

Happy Solar Return to all Virgos! While the Sun is in Virgo, we are all honorary Virgos. You are encouraged to clean out the toxins in your body and mind. Organise and tidy up your life, in whatever ways it is "a mess." And take stock of the ways you give service and make a contribution to the world around you. Take some time to pay attention to the details and precision of what you do, and appreciate how much you can do with very little. During this transit, organisation, useful procedures and practical application come together to form the key that opens the door to effectiveness, efficiency and improvement. This is a good time to adopt a service-oriented attitude, whether that involves being helpful to someone else or dedicated to your own healing and betterment. You could volunteer your time. Or, perform some "random acts of kindness." Or, just do something nice for someone. Projects and problem solving may work a bit better if you take an analytical, methodical approach to them (rather than intuitive or guessing). This is a good time to assimilate and "digest" the results of any preparation you've been doing toward a project, goal or production. Weed out what doesn't work and what doesn't support your efforts, and then reorganise and simplify whatever is left. Just don't get so carried away that you throw away something that's important to you or your goals.

Aug.23-28 T-Square aspect configuration (Mercury-Venus, Uranus, Pluto)

T-Square : Mercury-Venus, Uranus, Pluto

Under this transit, your consciousness and receptivity are growing toward future developments that will have far-reaching implications. This may come in the form of a gradual dawning new awareness, or it might surprise you with information that disrupts your expectations and intended ambitions. Perhaps you feel a nagging suspicion that doesn't quite fit into your current understanding of things, or it could be an unmistakable revelation. Either way, it may be time to open your mind to a new way of seeing your situation.

For example, you might be talking with a close friend or loved one, and the two of you seem a bit out of sync on a subject that you usually agree on. It's possible that the two of you are growing in slightly different directions and you're starting to see things a little differently. Or, there may be deeper feelings that one or both of you are wrestling with, which are influencing your viewpoint(s) right now. Your friendship might benefit from breaking out of that usual predicable agreement. Some debate and diversity of opinion could help to breathe new life into the bond that you share.

This is one of the many aspect configurations that will appear over the next few years that involve the approaching Uranus-Pluto square. Although the Uranus-Pluto won't be exact until 2012 (2012-2015), this potent energy is building now. We will become more aware of it when planets interact with Uranus and Pluto to form aspect configurations like this one.

Of particular interest is the fact that this T-square will be in effect throughout the 2008 Democratic National Convention in the US. This aspect configuration suggests there are likely to be tensions, power struggles and urgent attempts to control the flow and direction of the future. The scope and implications of decisions made at this event are likely to be more acutely felt than at other conventions. ...But we hardly need astrology to tell us that! ;-)

Aug.23 Mercury opposite Uranus (21:29 of Virgo/Pisces)

This is a wakeup call! You are asked to open your mind so that you can see something about your life, yourself or your situation that has eluded you until now. It might be a shocking revelation that changes your whole perspective...or it might also be a delightful surprise that adds a new dimension you hadn't thought of. However it manifests, you are in a position to see your situation more clearly and objectively -- although this can also make it seem like this energy is outside of you and happening TO you. However, if you look closely inside yourself, you may see thoughts, perceptions and impressions that correspond to the external events and participate in the interchange. Emails, Internet chats, and interaction with technology may be part of this transit as well. Communication may be a bit erratic or unpredictable, so be careful not to speak thoughtlessly or carelessly. However, you may find that words and perceptions come to you intuitively and spontaneously.

Aug.23 Venus opposite Uranus (21:28 of Virgo/Pisces) (Aug.24 in AU)

Relationships, social interaction, material resources and emotional balance may be a bit unpredictable or unstable around this time, as Uranus the Awakener sounds a wake-up gong in these areas. You may be more inclined to act out of character, to experiment or be reckless in relationship, social or financial matters, which could be liberating or disturbing, exciting or upsetting. Circumstances or other people might create a situation in which you are forced to respond in an unusual or unfamiliar way. The idea behind this energy is to become more flexible and more open to a broader vision of what is possible in those areas. There may be weak spots in the affected areas which this transit illuminates by creating problems, so that they can be repaired and strengthened, or else broken and released so that new opportunities can come in. Trust the process and keep your eyes open to seeing new truth and insight.

Aug.27 Mercury square Pluto (28:32 of Virgo/Sagittarius) (Aug.28 in UK, AU)

You are faced now with a challenge to empower your communication and perceptions, although this may not come easily. It could involve having to face some rather difficult truths that might be a bit disturbing or hard to accept. However in doing so, you gain a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself, your situation and your role within it. Obsessive or persistent thoughts that are morbid or paranoid are possible, which could be helped by finding something more positive to focus on or a creative outlet. Communication (from others or yourself or both) could be intense, intimidating or even downright damaging, since it may be tempting to get caught up in power struggles and domination. But communication can also be used now to heal, by cutting through hypocrisy and insincerity in order to reach a deeper authenticity and truth -- like lancing a boil so that healing can take place.

Aug.28 Mercury enters Libra (until Nov.04) (enters Aug.29 in UK, AU)

Mercury glides into Libra, bringing awareness and new ideas about your style of interaction and how you communicate with others. It may be easier to speak (and listen) with gentleness, fairness and diplomacy during this time. Thoughts, ideas, communication and negotiation could reach a state of increased balance and harmony, and you may be especially sensitive to other people and your environment. You could be more motivated to balance criticism or anger with gentleness and diplomacy. On the other hand, interaction could also become a carefully crafted game in which truth, honesty and facts are replaced by manipulative strategy and "white lies" designed to avoid hurt feelings. Indecision and "fence sitting" are possible under this transit, since you are able than usual to see many different sides of a situation. It might help to bounce your ideas and thoughts off someone who can be a good sounding board and give you feedback. It may be easier now to reach a win-win solution to conflicts, which is fair to all concerned -- but be careful you don't make incorrect or self-serving assumptions about what the other side wants.

Mercury remains in Libra for an extraordinarily long time. That's because Mercury will go retrograde in Libra from Sep.24 to Oct.15. Watch for Mercury-like themes appearing starting now: communications becoming awkward or confused, appointments needing to be rescheduled, plans and schedules being complicated to nail down, or having to dig deeper to find out the facts or information about a situation. Negotiations may also be affected, as it may take several tries to find the give-and-take balance that feels right to both sides. (Find out more about Mercury Retrograde.) More about the upcoming Mercury Retrograde cycle in the next update of the Low-Down on the Far-Out.

Aug.29 Venus square Pluto (28:32 of Virgo/Sagittarius)

Relationships and interactions are likely to be deep, intense and transformative under this transit. The same goes for your sense of beauty, and your material and financial dealings, which may require you to delve far deeper than usual to discover the truth under the surface of things. You may encounter the dark shadow of your desires -- the obscure, secret or unconscious hunger that hides underneath the "politically correct" face you show to the world (and to yourself. This is a challenge to be resolved in some way. It might bring out conflict rooted in envy or jealousy, if someone has something (or someone) that you feel you are entitled to. Or, it might prompt you to reach very deep into your soul to find your inner beauty and value. You may be challenged to develop empathy or empowerment about something that initially seemed undesirable, unforgivable or scary. This transit can show you the problem areas that need to be transformed and healed. And seeing these more clearly can be a catharsis that sets that transformative healing in motion.

Aug.30 Venus enters Libra (until Sep.23) (enters Aug.31 in AU)

Venus glides like a graceful model through her own sign of Libra, giving you the opportunity to expand your interactive style, cultivate diplomacy, beautify your surroundings, schmooze with social connections, and discover a new fashion statement. Find something beautiful, balanced or harmonious to appreciate or do during this time. You might consider visiting an art gallery, or watch a romantic movie, or listen to music that moves you into a peaceful place inside. You might feel drawn to going shopping for beautiful clothes or items to decorate your home. It can also be a good time to negotiate agreements with people, in a way that is fair and is focused on a win-win solution. Do something to celebrate, express and discover your inner and/or outer beauty. Find new ways to balance your own interests with those of others, which generates good will and harmony.
