"What's a New Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience PISCES energy in your life.

This is not a time for chatting about the weather or other mundane things. This is a time to watch the lightning in the sunrise and wax philosophical about the synchronicity of what that means in your life!

Despite Mars having recently gone direct, this is not a time to charge forward, all full of ego and self-glorifying attention getting tactics. This is a time to offer your creativity and celebration to a higher cause that can benefit others.

This is not a time for predictable thoughts or actions. This is not a time to put faith in the Universe and then passively sit back and let it all happen TO you. This is a time to think outside the box, to dare to think beyond your familiar horizons, and to open your mind to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.

This New Moon in Pisces is indeed extraordinary! The Sun and Moon are tightly conjunct Mercury and Uranus (within just a 1:19 orb), giving that dreamy Piscean energy a distinctly cerebral and quirky aura. Jupiter is very strong in its own sign of Pisces (for which it is also the traditional ruler), yet it is essentially unaspected, making it operate more like a sudden clap of thunder in a rainstorm or perhaps even a "bolt out of the blue."

Lightning requires a lightning rod in order to safely channel its explosive, sizzling energy into the ground. In other words, unconventional and inspired ideas need a strong channel that can guide them into manifestation.

Enter: Saturn in Libra, which is opposite the lightning brigade in Pisces. This is an out-of-sign opposition (properly called a dissociate aspect), meaning the opposition aspect involves planets that are in signs not directly opposite to each other.

Some astrologers consider this to invalidate the opposition's effect, and perhaps in a strict sense it does. The polarizing effect of a dissociate opposition is stretched sideways to involve signs that are in quincunx aspect to each other. The quincunx relationship brings an element of irritation or subtlety, like a spot floating in your peripheral vision that annoyingly disappears when you try to look at it directly. Yet, this quincunx effect requires and increases your awareness to meaningfully observe and benefit from its energy.

A straight opposition is confrontational and tends to place things in an either/or context. In this black-and-white perspective, there is little or no room for shades of grey. It's either one or the other; opposites are mutually exclusive entities. On the other hand, quincunx energy lives in the shades of grey. It shows you a world in which opposites can and do coexist. In fact, either/or extremes are only boundaries that mark the brightest and darkest shades of grey.

This New Moon challenges you to see beyond the limiting view of either/or, black/white, yes/no world. In Pisces, everything has blurred edges, and it is uncertain where one thing ends and something else begins. This is not an easy task for many of us. We tend to think in binary terms.

For example, if someone asks us to turn down the stereo, we are more likely to turn it off completely than to find a lower volume (or to leave it where it was, telling the person to go take a long walk off a short dock). If someone tells you that you could stand to lose a few pounds, your first reaction might be to feel unattractive (taking on society's harsh judgment of body weight). It takes maturity, objectivity and a strong sense of self to put their comment in a broader context that takes into account both inner and outer beauty that exists regardless of the numbers on your bathroom scale.

This New Moon chart has five, count 'em, FIVE planets in Pisces. That's like putting half the solar system in the Twilight Zone. What we need is something to provide objectivity, grounding and a solid anchor to the physical world. After all, no matter how spiritually blissed out we might be, we still have to live in the physical world, clothe and feed our bodies, keep a roof over our heads and deal with life's challenges.

And so, we come back around to Saturn again. Saturn is in opposition to most of those Pisces planets and can act like a lightning rod to ground all that nebulous energy. However, because it's a dissociate opposition (with that quincunx-y energy), it's less likely to become a power struggle between the forces of spiritual expansion and the forces of physical limitation.

If you choose to use it that way, Saturn can operate as the voice of reason, objectivity, maturity and strength that can keep you from becoming lost in the Uranian lightning storm. In addition, the more ambiguous nature of the dissociate opposition can possibly keep Saturn's clearly defining nature from becoming overly "binary" in its effect. In other words, a situation where you might otherwise be tempted to react in one extreme or the other becomes an opportunity to take a more balanced view that sees the whole picture, not just the extreme ends of the spectrum of possibilities.

Wedge aspect figure

What helps to bring a flexible, amicable balance to this opposition is Mars. Still hovering at zero degrees of Leo (having turned direct just 5 days ago) it is gradually increasing in exuberance and playfulness. Mars forms a Wedge aspect figure to the opposed planets. It is in trine aspect (120°) to the Sun, Moon, Mercury and Uranus (also in a dissociate aspect that leans into the quincunx side of the energy) and in sextile aspect (60°) to Saturn.

Mars, therefore, acts as a jubilant, playful, light-hearted mediator in any polarizing disagreements that might emerge from the opposed planets. On one hand, you might want to just let go, escape, bliss out or drift away from all heaviness, conflict, struggle or effort. On the other hand, the need for concrete results, responsibilities, boundaries and work could nag you into feeling you must abandon your blissful dreams. If you get stuck in this either/or dilemma, or if you find yourself locked in a power struggle between what you wish could be and what you fear must be, Mars can be your ally. It can help you see the lighter side of things, embrace your responsibilities in a spirit of joy, and approach your challenges with playful confidence.

This New Moon cycle seems to want to launch us out of complacency. Instead of using that Piscean energy to just be, use it to open your mind to just be something. Rather than tapping into a spiritual state of mind to become more connected to something greater than yourself, this New Moon cycle can bring you in contact with super-inspiration that allows you to actually be something greater than your conventional self. You could touch a part of yourself that you aren't normally even aware of.

Watch for experiences that expand your vision of who you are and light up unforeseen possibilities. This might happen only in a flash and then it's gone, just like lightning. That's your cue to absorb what you saw in that flash and then set about finding ways to apply that wisdom to your life. That brilliant flash of insight could come in many forms. Here are some suggestions to invite this into your life:

Mar.15 – Mercury conjunct Uranus (26:29 of Pisces) (Mar.16 in AU)

Communication and thoughts can be radical, spontaneous, unusual and uncharacteristic under this transit. You may be compelled to speak your mind to say things you've held back from saying before now. However, as the saying goes, there is a risk of "shooting off your mouth before your brains are loaded." It is a time when you are likely to be open-minded and flexible in your perceptions. Our eyes are wide open, and as a result, we may be a bit shocked, surprised or stunned by what we see. This can also release our creative genius and bring inspired clarity, especially as we look to the future. Encounters with groups, friends and the greater community are also possible at this time.

Mar.17 – Sun conjunct Uranus (26:34 of Pisces)

Spontaneity, surprises and "flying by the seat of your pants" characterize this transit. You are more open than usual to new experiences and open-minded to new perspectives. Your sense of humour and fun are finely tuned and may spring up unexpectedly and irreverently. It is more possible to break free of old habits and getting out of a rut you have been in. In fact, you may find it is fun to try doing something completely out of character...so much so that it's wise to be careful not to be too reckless under this transit. Have fun pushing the envelope, but try not to rip or shred that envelope. On the other hand, that might be the only way you can get out of a restrictive situation that's holding you back, and this transit could give you the impulsive courage to do just that. Your creativity may come in bursts and in unexpected ways, so try to take advantage of them when they present themselves or else write down your inspiration for future consideration.

Mar.17 – Mercury enters Aries (until Apr.02) (Mar.18 in AU)

Directness of speech, fast perceptions and an attitude of “just do it” mark this transit. While Mercury sprints through Aries, you may feel the impulse to cut through and get to the point in conversations and other forms of communication. Body language speaks loudly now, as do actions. At its best, this transit can help words, awareness and insight to arise spontaneously, combined with the courage to express them. On the other hand, you could also say things out of anger, impatience or impulse that you later regret. It may be a time when you'd rather cut to the chase – acknowledge things and move on – rather than hang around to process the details. It's a great time to spin ideas that can be developed later. It is also a good time to think independently and follow your thoughts into new perspectives.

Mar.17 – Mercury trine Mars (00:36 of Aries/Leo) (Mar.18 in AU)

It may be easy to find the courage to speak your mind and say what needs to be said under this transit. In fact, your ideas and words may come so quickly and easily that it's hard to stop them from tumbling out of your mouth before you've had a chance to evaluate the best way to say them. Your communication is likely to be direct, concise and right on the mark, even if it might also be a bit blunt or pointed. If you need to confront someone about a difficult situation, this transit can provide courage and clear words to help you do that – although perhaps not as good for a situation requiring a more delicate, sensitive touch. It is a time when you could potentially find the nerve to take risks, or to defend yourself if the need arises (especially verbally). Overall, this is a wonderful transit for anything involving direct communication (e.g., public speaking, writing, debating), as well as mental agility (e.g., generating ideas, finding solutions, making decisions).

Mar.18 – Mercury opposite Saturn (01:34 of Aries/Libra)

The time has come to face facts. There may be a reality in your life that you've been avoiding, and you need to accept and deal with it. Or, you might have to conform to the expectations of others because there's no other way around it. Or, you could find that your ability to communicate, say what you want to say, or get your point across is harder for a few days. This will pass, but there may be concrete reasons why this might not be the best time to communicate whatever is on your mind. You might feel a bit as if you're being tested, and in some way this could be true. This transit may bring an opportunity to see how much you really know and how skilled you are at using that knowledge. On the other hand, this could be a time when hard work and preparation that you've done for several months could pay off. You may be able to progress to the next step in a project, or to make plans in an organised, concrete and responsible way. For a few days, taking a structured, methodical or factual approach to whatever you're doing may produce the best results.

Mar.20 – Mercury square Pluto (05:20 of Aries/Capricorn)

You are faced now with a challenge to empower your communication and perceptions, although this may not come easily. It could involve having to face some rather difficult truths that might be a bit disturbing or hard to accept. However in doing so, you gain a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself, your situation and your role within it. Obsessive or persistent thoughts that are morbid or paranoid are possible, which could be helped by finding something more positive to focus on or a creative outlet. Communication (from others or yourself or both) could be intense, intimidating or even downright damaging, since it may be tempting to get caught up in power struggles and domination. But communication can also be used now to heal, by cutting through hypocrisy and insincerity in order to reach a deeper authenticity and truth – like lancing a boil so that healing can take place.

Happy Solar Return to everyone born in the sign of Aries! This is the Vernal Equinox – the time when day and night are of equal length. In the northern hemisphere, this marks the beginning of Spring, as the light increases. In the southern hemisphere, it is the start of Fall, as the light decreases. While the Sun is in Aries, it is a time when all of us (not just those born under the sign of Aries) have the opportunity to experience our Aries nature. The archetype of that nature is like the pure life force that is contained in a single seed. A seed is the residue of a previous cycle of growth – both its resulting harvest and its unfinished business. The Aries energy is about our use of that raw life force within our personal expression of that energy. It manifests in assertiveness, courage, risk-taking, directness, initiative, our sex drive, and the pioneering spirit. It can also emerge as aggression, pushiness, violence, anger, recklessness and self-absorption. The same forceful energy that can fuel damage and single-minded egotism is the same energy that, applied in a different way, is also essential for self-validation, confidence and the drive to make things happen. While the Sun is in Aries, we all have the opportunity to explore how we use this energy in our lives and whether we want to change this. Here are some suggestions about how to explore your Aries nature: Is there something new you want to start in your life? What activities do you want to begin that you’ve never done before? What will give you the courage and confidence to bring these into your life? If it is not possible to do this, or if you encounter delays, how do you deal with your frustration? Do anger and frustration motivate you to take action, or do these emotions tend to overwhelm and inhibit you? How do you express your anger, and does this clear the air or just create more problems? Use this time to explore these and related areas.

The Sun no sooner moves into Aries but that it makes a lovely trine to Mars, just recently turned direct after a long retrograde period. The trine is exciting enough, and always happens very soon after Mars turns direct. However, this particular trine is special because both are at zero degrees of their respective signs in the hours leading up to when the transit becomes exact. (In other words, although these planets are at precisely 1 degree of Aries and Leo when the transit becomes exact, they are both at 0 degrees of those signs as they are approaching exact, which adds extra energy to their combined effect.) So, if you have been waiting until after Mars goes direct to set something in motion, this could be an excellent time to take action! Listen to your intuition and your natural spontaneity.

Mar.20 – Sun trine Mars (01:00 of Aries/Leo)

Your energy, purpose, vitality and health are likely to be strong and clear during this transit. Your sense of purpose is supported by your ability to assert yourself and take a stand for what you want and what you believe in. In general, this transit is a great time to take action, especially if you have prepared the way and have all your ducks in a row. If you've been waiting for a spurt of self-confidence or motivation, this transit could give you the push you need to move forward in your plans or goals. Strive to be spontaneous rather than impulsive, and confident rather than arrogant.

Mar.21 – Sun opposite Saturn (01:17 of Aries/Libra) (Mar.22 in UK, AU)

You may be obligated to fulfil the expectations of others or of society under this transit. A situation or project (which may have begun around 6 months ago) might require that you start to implement the plans and preparation you've been building. Or you might find that problems you've been putting off must now be dealt with. Although you could experience this as stressful or heavy, it can also be a time when you are finally able to move ahead with a project or goal. All commitment requires some degree of limitation and pruning back, since we must choose one path and leave other options behind. This may therefore feel like a time when you are pressured by obligation, necessity or restraint...or it could feel like the rehearsals are finally over and it's time to launch the rocket. If it seems like you're only seeing blocks or obstacles in your way, this might be a reflection of not having done enough preparation (in which case you will need to draw on your experience to solve the problems or deal with the reality in front of you). This can be a time when you reap whatever you have sown in the past (especially the last 6 months), so if your current situation seems negative or punitive, it might be a time when you need to look back over your actions that lead to this and be accountable for past actions and decisions. Whether you are taking the final step to implement your plans or are facing the results of poor past judgment, this can be a time when you are called upon to move forward in your personal growth and maturation. Use it to strengthen your responsibility (response-ability), and don't let fears of inadequacy erode your self-esteem.

Mar.22 – Mars sextile Saturn (01:11 of Leo/Libra) (Mar.23 in UK, AU)

There is an opportunity to harness the energy of willpower using practical discipline. Your physical and mental energy are likely to be stable and enduring, or else they can become this way more easily than usual by applying a sustained focus of effort. This is a great transit if you need to be productive or to make progress in a goal that you are working toward. The thing to watch out for is a tendency to be over-cautious to the point where you get stuck in the planning stage and don't get much done. Or, you might try to rush into the production phase before your plans are fully formed. This transit works best when these areas are brought into balance.

Mar.25 – Sun square Pluto (05:22 of Aries/Capricorn) (Mar.26 in UK, AU)

This can be a challenging time, when your sense of purpose, identity and direction may feel blocked, overpowered or regulated by forces beyond your control. You may find yourself confronted by difficult situations or people, requiring that you rally an unusually strong show of power to keep from feeling powerless or overwhelmed. The trick is to center yourself in empowerment rather than simple power – that means your power comes from within yourself rather than from controlling people and situations outside of yourself. You might find yourself involved in power struggles or abandonment, either in the present or stirred up from the past. You might be forced to let go of your attachment to something or someone due to circumstances beyond your control. However, this can also be a time when you reach inside yourself and find you have more strength than you thought you did. Adversity may inspire new assertiveness and purpose in you – empowerment born of conflict and struggle.

Mar.27 – Earth Hour

From 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM tonight (for whatever your local time is), turn off all non-essential lights, electrical and electronic equipment. For more information, go to www.earthhour.org

Mar.28 – Daylight Savings Time begins in the UK and Europe

If you live in the UK or Europe, it might be time to turn your clocks one hour forward. If you're not sure whether your area observes DST, you can check here to see when and if your location changes to DST.

Mar.29 – Venus sextile Neptune (27:40 of Aries/Aquarius) (Mar.30 in AU)

Artistry, romance, creativity and faith have the potential to flow freely now. Your creative Muse is whispering in your ear, although it will still take your own elbow grease to turn it into something real. Socially and romantically, things could run smoothly and even a bit magically, so be sure you are clear in yourself about what you really want. This can be a time of blessings and abundance (in all areas of life) ...but there is also the risk of overspending and being overly optimistic in your assumptions about money and relationships. Your natural beauty and warmth can be brought out by this transit, but don't just waste it on creating a façade of outer glamour and charm. Let the essence of your inner beauty and pure spirit shine through your appearance and mannerisms!

Sabian Symbol Libra 10: A canoe approaching safety through dangerous waters

Sabian Symbol for the
Full Moon in Libra

Libra 10

A canoe approaching safety through dangerous waters.

This symbol ("What's a Sabian Symbol?") reflects the risks of the current situation, but emphasizes that resolution is within your reach.

A symbol of navigating through dangerous waters implies the need to maneuver through turbulent emotions and feelings, or perhaps through a vigorous creative process.

Blain Bovee notes that "'Turbulence' is itself a condition that stirs up possibility," and that navigating these conditions "requires a deft touch." (The Sabian Symbols: The Original Symbols Fully Revealed)

This symbol is perfect for our Full Moon chart with its precarious and subtle potential for imbalance and the need to find that delicate balance point.

Dane Rudhyar subtitles this symbol, "The self-control and poise necessary to reach a steady state of inner stability." (An Astrological Mandala)

The main message here is to avoid extremes that could capsize your efforts and have faith that better times are close ahead.

"What's a Full Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience LIBRA energy in your life.

If Aries is the Self, Libra is the Other. If Aries is the action, Libra is the reaction. If Aries is the face, Libra is the mirror that reflects it. If Aries is the planting of the seed, Libra is the plant that grows from it. If Aries is the initiation of something new, Libra is the point where we turn around to see what we've created and figure out what to do with it from here.

In Libra we reach an opposite perspective – not necessarily in conflict with the initial one (although that's possible), but certainly a complementary view of it. It's like seeing the other side of the coin so that you now know both the "heads" and "tails" of the situation. In Libra you experience both sides of the same thing, in order to achieve a balanced point of view.

However, opposites can be tricky. What's the opposite of love? Some say it's hate; others say it's indifference – yet hate and indifference are not the same at all. They (whoever "they" are) say that opposites attract, but also that birds of a feather flock together. Which is true? The same "they" also say that great minds think alike, but that fools seldom differ. The same idea, yet different?

Discovering and navigating the trickier side of this Libra terrain is your mission for this Full Moon. Striking a balance sounds like it should be pretty straightforward, but it's often surprisingly complex. The subtle yet significant differences in the possible balance points (e.g. hate versus indifference) often depends on a deeper understanding of what you're trying to bring balance to. For example, different qualities of love will have different opposites. Hate could be seen as the opposite of love in terms of affection, although indifference is more its opposite in terms of love's connection and involvement.

Full Moon T-square to Pluto

The Sun-Moon opposition (in other words, the Full Moon axis) forms a T-square aspect pattern with Pluto, which challenges you to dig deeper into what your desired state of balance really means and how to recognize it when you see it. If the deeper levels of that balance are not understood, you wind up trying to strike a balance through mere reaction, which just tends to evoke even more reaction.

For example, it's like trying to steer a car by yanking the steering wheel when the car starts to drift. But too much correction is an overreaction that requires even more correction, which just keeps escalating until you have a full blown crisis on your hands. When you overreact, you'll probably get where you're going, but (a) you'll terrify everyone around you, as they swerve to avoid you, (b) it will take you a lot longer to get where you're going, and (c) you could easily wind up flipping the car over.

Pluto's T-square with the Full Moon warns that overreaction could potentially escalate into a much more serious problem. Better to gird your loins, stand your ground and deal with the problem rather than resorting to a "scorched earth" reaction. Go for quality, not quantity.

Double Yod Key aspect figure
Focused Yod Kite, with Little Eye aspect figure

Another aspect configuration at the Full Moon that could complicate things is a Double Yod Key, consisting of two interlocking Yod aspect figures. Some of the aspects are a bit wide in their orb, but collectively they could create some awkward dynamics at the Full Moon.

Start with the Focused Yod Kite: Chiron and Neptune in tight conjunction are sextile (60°) to Venus, and both sides are quincunx (150°) Saturn, which in turn is opposite (180°) Uranus. This includes a Little Eye figure that is exact within less than one degree of orb (Venus sextile Chiron/Neptune, semi-sextile Uranus). Saturn, itself in balancing Libra, forms a wide Focused Yod figure with the Little Eye.

The whole effect could be to take the balancing dynamic of Libra and create a state of imbalance that is difficult to identify and resolve. You might not even realize that something is out of balance – just that something is out of whack and your situation seems a bit wonky in some way you can't quite put your finger on. The central issue probably stems from (and can be dealt with through) the Saturn-Uranus opposition. In other words, watch for one side of the dilemma being conventional, serious and structured, while the other side is about rebellion, breaking free and trying something different. If you can find a way to bring these opposites into balance, you'll have the foundation to deal effectively with the situation.

The other Yod in the Double Yod Key involves Saturn sextile (60°) Mars, with both quincunx (150°) Chiron (and Neptune gets pulled in by osmosis). Although Mars sextile Saturn is a nice stabilizing energy for physical energy and taking action, Chiron insinuates an element of doubt or limitation to how effective it can be. In terms of physical energy, there could be leftover effects of a past illness or being a bit rundown that must still be dealt with. In terms of putting something into action, Chiron might represent an element of imperfection that can't be fully resolved to your satisfaction. For example, a new project might not be quite as fulfilling as you'd hoped, although can still be worthwhile and useful.

The two Yods are joined by the approaching Venus-Mars square (90°) which becomes exact on Apr.03 and continues its influence for about another week after that. Venus and Mars are themselves a natural set of polarized energies that need to be brought into balance. Venus is receptive; Mars is aggressive. Venus attracts what she wants to her, while Mars sees what he wants and goes out and gets it. Both of these energies are a good thing in the right context but need to be balanced by the other or else they become problematic.

In a square aspect, Venus and Mars tend to be out of balance and are at odds with each other. Since Venus is in Detriment in Aries, she is at a disadvantage, giving Mars a bit of an edge in their competition. Watch in your life for areas where you might be being a bit passive-aggressive (digging in the barbs while smiling sweetly and pretending you're not). In this case, it may help to come clean about whatever you're being secretly hostile about, by being more honestly assertive; otherwise it could evoke an overly aggressive reaction in the other person. Alternatively, if you are being too forceful or enthusiastic in some area, it could inhibit your ability to relax and simply enjoy the pleasure of the moment.

Mercury is also conjunct Venus in Aries, although too far away to be involved in the Yods. Mercury seems to be catching up to Venus, but reaches its closest point on Apr.05 only to start slowing down for the approaching Mercury retrograde (Apr.18 to May.11) while Venus moves on. Mercury doesn't actually catch up to Venus again until Oct.25, when Venus herself is retrograde and after Mercury has gone through two of his own retrograde cycles. Ironically, when Mercury does finally conjoin Venus they are in the other Mars-ruled sign of Scorpio. In the meantime, you get a taste of Mercury and Venus through succulent words, juicy thoughts and perceptions that are drawn toward whatever brings you pleasure.

Mar.30 – Venus sextile Chiron (28:58 of Aries/Aquarius) (Mar.31 in AU)

Although this transit lasts for only a few days, it is possible to make some progress in your healing and rebalancing efforts, although it will take some effort to make it happen. This may show itself in relationships, social interaction, finances, values, health or your spiritual connection to the Universe. You have an increased ability to negotiate with others and with your circumstances to achieve a fair compromise that results in equal sacrifice and benefit for all concerned. However, there is a risk of wanting to avoid conflict and discord so much that you negotiate beyond what you are truly comfortable with – peace at any price. By accepting and embracing the effort or struggle that is required, you can get out of your own way and achieve a more healing balance in those struggles. You now have increased ability to facilitate changes in situations that are within your control. It can also be easier to accept and adapt to that which lies beyond your control. Your effect on others can be potentially healing right now, especially by helping them find a new balance and point of acceptance in the conflicts and struggles of their lives.

Mar.31 – Venus enters Taurus (until Apr.25) (Apr.01 in AU)

Venus rules the sign of Taurus, so she is very comfortable here! Your experiences of pleasure and sensuality are likely to be heightened...perhaps even a bit too much! You might be tempted to overindulge in sensory delights. On the other hand, you may feel the urge to be more grounded, practical and methodical in the way you handle relationships, money, possessions, material values, and attracting what you desire. It is also a time when your desires could manifest tangibly or at least become more apparent. It may be possible to see more clearly the ways that your self-worth is tied to material things, like income, savings, possessions and spending. Your finances and possessions could act like a "touch stone" to reassure you in times of stress. The trick is not to let this become a substitute for genuine self-respect. To make the most of this transit, take some time to relax and enjoy life! Take your time, smell the flowers, drink in the sunsets, listen to beautiful music, get an aromatherapy massage or explore new uses for chocolate. ;-)

Mar.31 – Mercury sextile Neptune (27:44 of Aries/Aquarius) (Apr.01 in UK, AU)

Your mind is very open to imagination, dreams and compassion under this transit, with a little applied effort and focus. This can be a very creative time, when ideas flow like a magical river. It can also be easy to get caught up in yearning and fantasizing about your hidden wishes, although it is possible to channel this into creative expression. (e.g., writing poetry, dancing, wistful music, singing in the shower, whatever!) The possible disadvantage is that you might want so much to reach a state of inspired intuition, magical outlook and effortless communication, that you are willing to be deceived rather than fall short of what you are hoping for. Listening sympathetically to others' problems may come easily now, and you are more likely to get a compassionate response from others about your own problems. However, it may also be difficult to draw clear and firm boundaries with others, since you are more susceptible to the emotional gravity of others. It is ultimately a time for optimism, hope, creativity and intuition, although it's wise to keep at least one foot on the ground.

Apr.01 – Mercury sextile Chiron (29:05 of Aries/Aquarius) (Apr.02 in UK, AU)

Your mental focus and communication could get an injection of healing energy under this transit, as long as you are prepared to put some effort into getting it. Your spirits can become uplifted now, from seeing a light at the end of the tunnel or from finding a light that guides you along the path in front of you. It will not, however, make the tunnel or the path go away; you'll still have to walk the walk. But your mental perspective can become more accepting of inconsistencies and frustrations under this transit, which can alleviate a lot of stress and make the journey a bit smoother. Mental struggles and critical "self-talk" may find some reconciliation and acceptance that brings peace of mind. You have an increased ability to find the right words and understanding to help others with their problems, by providing insightful feedback. To get the most out of this transit, aim to find a mental outlook and communication style that can tolerate contradiction without having to eradicate one in order to justify the other.

Apr.02 – Mercury enters Taurus (until Jun.10)

Thoughts, communication and analysis work best when they are careful and methodical, during this transit. Your mental attitude and awareness may be somewhat serious and conservative – or down-to-earth, relaxed, and grounded in simple pleasures. Your perceptions may be a little slower to form, and you may have to search a little longer to find the right words. But there is also an increased ability to savour and appreciate your experiences more, and it can be a time when you can relax and recharge your mental batteries. You might find that your body instincts and sensory experience give you more information than your conscious thoughts. This is a good time to plan out how to manifest the ideas that sprang from your imagination in the past several weeks. Take your best ideas, perceptions and words and sow them like seeds. Then watch them grow over time.

Mercury is in Taurus an unusually long time because it is getting ready to go retrograde in Taurus (Apr.18 to May.11).

Apr.03 – Venus square Mars (03:22 of Taurus/Leo)

Your receptive, diplomatic side is arguing with your assertive, decisive side. The result is either a battle of wills between your Yin and Yang, or a new creative energy that harnesses both. This could manifest in the form of relationship problems, financial struggles, arguments about control, or you are propelled to take action with plans that have been percolating for a while. If you're usually more comfortable with your Yin side (receptive, diplomatic), you might feel a bit backed into a corner or forced to negotiate under pressure. If you're more at home in your Yang side (assertive, action-oriented), you may feel compelled to blunt or sheathe the sword you would prefer to smite your enemy with. Either way, this is about balancing the two sides and finding a new cooperation that works for both.

Apr.04 – Mercury enters the Retrograde Shadow (02:39 of Taurus; until May.29) ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrogrades.   Read more about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury again enters the Shadow – the area of Zodiac where it will later go retrograde (Apr.18 to May.11). During its retrograde cycle, Mercury travels through the same span of the Zodiac three times (called the Shadow). The first time through, it is going in direct motion (moving forward), then retrograde (looks like it's going backwards), and then direct again. This means there is a more involved process of development and change involved with things that Mercury influences – ideas, thoughts, frame of mind and mental focus. It also concerns the collection, exchange, analysis and organisation of information. All forms of communication are also affected – email and snail mail, the Internet, the media in general, books and magazines, as well as public transit (buses, trains, etc.) and neighbourhoods. The situations developing over the next 2 weeks (leading up to when Mercury actually goes retrograde) will likely require further research, deeper consideration and adjustments to unexpected discoveries over the next couple of months. Expect changes in your plans, increasingly disrupted communication, and new information coming to light that may not fit conveniently into your plans. It's wise to leave lots of extra time to do things, plan future projects and get to wherever you're going. If you must make important decisions during this time, try to build some flexibility into your plans to allow for later changes – or if possible, you may want to delay final or irrevocable decisions until well after Mercury goes direct (May.11).

Mercury makes two major aspects to other planets during this retrograde cycle. It squares Mars (Apr.05, Apr.25, Jun.11) and it trines Pluto (Apr.06, May.03, May.19). The square (90°) to Mars suggests an unusually short fuse to Taurus' typically long patience. It's said that Taurus' anger is slow to rise, but when it does you'd better duck for cover! Mercury squaring Mars could easily be the trigger that sets off anger, frustration and blurting out thoughts and feelings that have been held back.

The trine (120°) to Pluto allows you to draw from deep inside when speaking your mind. The thing with trines is that they can smooth out rough edges, bringing pleasant experiences, or they can open the floodgates and let out things that might best be kept held back. In this case, Mercury trine Pluto could go either way, especially with the square to Mars lurking in the wings. If you communicate from a place of compassion, integrity and wisdom inside, then the trine to Pluto can support that with depth and insight. However, if you speak impulsively, sharply or angrily, you could run the risk of your words having a hurtful or even cruel effect. If that happens, be honest with yourself (and the other person, if possible) in order to restore integrity and damage control.

Apr.04 – Venus trine Pluto (05:25 of Taurus/Capricorn) (Apr.05 in UK, AU)

Close one-on-one connections with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) will tend to gravitate to a deeper, more intense level now. Instead of automatically doing the diplomatic, "nice" thing, you may find it is more fulfilling to share more of your authentic feelings. It may be possible now to connect with people on a deeper level, while still ensuring that your interests are equally balanced with theirs. The trick is to do this without trying to control or overpower the other person, and it may be easier to avoid those traps now. You could make some deeply intimate connections with people under this transit. Financial dealings with other people may also go smoothly, although it might be wise to get clear confirmation that you're both on the same page about the fine print.

Apr.05 – Mercury square Mars (03:48 of Taurus/Leo)

Fiery speech, argument and hot debate characterise this transit. This could come in the form of conflict, or it might be stimulating and challenging – or both! One thing to watch out for is that you may have a short fuse for a temper, and the same may be true for others around you. It can be a time when you blurt out things you later regret, or you might finally find the courage to do something that's long overdue. The problem is that one can easily look like the other, and what feels like courage in the moment might look more like reckless haste in retrospect. Harsh words can't always be taken back, so keep a grip on your objectivity and better judgment while you're verbally fighting the dragons. Use this energy to stoke your motivational fires, and use your ideas to generate positive action. It can help to pace your mental energy like racing a horse, which can harness abundant energy to fuel your decisions, courage and resolve.

This is the first of 3 passes of this transit: Apr.05, Apr.25 and Jun.11. You might find you are becoming aware of information or things that don't fit the way you think they should. As much as you might hope to resolve this quickly and easily, there is likely a deeper level of insight and understanding waiting to be discovered over the next several weeks. Allow the truth to unfold in its own time and try not to react prematurely.

Apr.06 – Mercury trine Pluto (05:25 of Taurus/Capricorn)

It is possible to dive deep below the surface now, in your perception of situations, other people and yourself. If you have been working on trying to understand the deeper motivations and dynamics of what is happening in your life, there could be a breakthrough now. The light may finally go on in the darker corners that have eluded you, and your penetrating insight. You could find a way to articulate these perceptions and speak your mind in a way that is unusually powerful or intense (so be careful you don't inadvertently blow your audience out of the water). This transit can bring an opportunity to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions or ineffective forms of communication. Try writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit. This is the only exact pass for this transit, since Pluto was out of range when Mercury came through this area two months ago.

This is the first of 3 passes of this transit: Apr.06, May.03, May.19. Your powers of perception are likely to expand over the coming several weeks, so be alert to notice what you're picking up around this time. You are likely aware of a lot that's going on under the surface. It's a great time to write in your journal and do other exploration of your deepest secrets, fears, passions and desires.

Apr.06 – Pluto stationary Retrograde (05:25 of Capricorn) (Apr.07 in UK, AU) ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrogrades.)

For up to a week before and after this date, Pluto's energy is especially strong and intense. You might experience this in the form of intensity, power struggles, deep psychological awareness or strong libido. You could encounter the need to face aspects of yourself or others that are disturbing or difficult to accept. There may also be some part of yourself or your life that has fulfilled its purpose and needs to be shed like a snake's skin. Over the next 5 months (while Pluto is retrograde), you will work at loosening and letting go of that "skin," and working toward the rebirth that will come out of it. This can also be a time when you become aware of the areas where you need to strengthen your personal empowerment or possibly need to tone down the way you wield power.

Apr.07 – Saturn Retrograde enters Virgo (until Jul.21) (Apr.08 in AU)

For a few months, Saturn returns briefly to Virgo to clean out the fridge, sweep up the place and have one last look around any forgotten minutia before turning in the key and permanently vacating (well, until 2036 anyway). After the (relatively) smooth stroll in Libra since Oct.29.2009, these few months might be a bit difficult to endure. However, do take notice of whatever is demanding your attention. Your return to balanced Libra will be much more prepared.
