"What's a New Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience AQUARIUS energy in your life.

Quick! What's been happening in your life lately that's brand new? Unprecedented? Unfamiliar? Unexpected? Unconventional?

I'm talking about the last few months, going back to October 2014.

What have you been doing that you've never done before? Or something you've been doing differently from before. It might have been forced on you by circumstance, or perhaps it was a conscious choice you made.

In what situations have you had to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and improvise? When did you find you simply couldn't respond in the same-old-same-old, tried-and-true way? Maybe you suddenly had to make it up as you went along, or you might have sought out someone to help you figure out a new approach.

Or perhaps, rather than something completely new, you might have experimented with different ways of responding to an old familiar situation.

One way or another, this has been a time of firsts.

As far as I can tell, its just about letting the universe know what you want and working toward it
while letting go of how it might come to pass.
~ Jim Carrey

These last 4 months have been filled with astrological energy that tries to inspire a sense of courage to strike out on a new path, leaving behind the familiarity of past experience (for better or worse).

The reason is four New Moons in a row at zero degrees! That includes our current New Moon in Aquarius. The sequence began last October with the Solar Eclipse at 0 Scorpio, then the New Moon at 0 Sagittarius, then 0 Capricorn, and now at 0 Aquarius.

This is a pretty rare occurrence! To have any New Moon at zero degrees is a pretty big deal at any time. The New Moon gives birth to initiatory energy that brings something new into your life. Big or small, positive or negative, profound or just interesting something new is emerging that is then present at the following Full Moon.

But to have 4 New Moons in a row, all at 0 of their signs is very rare. How rare? See Numbers for Nerds, below.

So... so what? Astrologically speaking, we've been going through a long time of powerful initiatory energy. It started with the Solar Eclipse in Scorpio that evoked deep, negative or heavy energy in order to discard and release it. Then the New Moon in Sagittarius challenged us to rise up and put that Scorpio transformation into a broader, more positive perspective. After that was the New Moon in Capricorn, which pushed us to focus on a destination and compile a strategy for manifesting it.

Now we have the New Moon in Aquarius. What do you do for an encore after Capricorn molds you, shapes you, hones you to a fine point and hurls you like a dart toward your target? Well, you start to look beyond the dartboard. Is that all there is? No way! The question comes back to: why are you doing it? And more importantly, what implications and effects will it have for the world around you?

Aquarius is about the future and also about the collective the greater community, including friends, associates, peers and groups of people who share a common cause, vision or perspective. So at this stage of the process, we are challenged to link our personal journey back to the world around us. Has your learning curve developed in such a way that it might benefit others? Perhaps this is a good time to think of ways you could share that with them. Have you gone through a struggle that now leaves you in need of connection to friends and other like-minded people?

How do you maintain and expand the growth you've done in the last 4 months in the context of the future and the outside world? Maybe you can; maybe you can't; maybe you'll need to take a detour first. What does the New Moon chart say?

He attacked everything in life with a mix of
extraordinary genius and naive incompetence,
and it was often difficult to tell which was which.
~ Douglas Adams

Mercury, that lovable (*cough*) brat who occasionally moonwalks across the sky is about to come back for an encore. He turns retrograde the day after the New Moon, so his stationary energy lights up the chart like a beacon.

This puts a peculiar spin on the move-forward energy of a zero-degree New Moon, since Mercury changing directions signals a backflow of energy. Whereas the Aquarius Moon says "Let's blow this pop stand and ease on down the road," Mercury seems to say "Let's surprise everyone by going back the way we came!"

In some astrological dignity systems (rulership, exalted, detriment, fall), Mercury is exalted in Aquarius, and Mercury stays in that sign throughout this retrograde cycle. As a result, his contribution to the New Moon could be about exploring along an intriguing detour down a windy path far off the beaten track. Not that the world will be safe from the usual Mercury retrograde hijinks (and believe me, I've been seeing this one coming for a few weeks now) but there may be more genius method to his madness this time around than usual.

During this overall cycle, Mercury makes 3 sextile aspects to Saturn and 3 sextiles to Uranus. Watch for unexpected opportunities and resources, flashes of inspiration and genius, and mental thoughts and ideas about how you could work with the New Moon energy. For example, you might think about connecting with a group that could advance your dreams and vision. Or you might need to sit for a while apart from the world around you in order to focus your own unique thoughts, intentions and possibilities, where they won't be overly influenced by the scandal-du-jour happening in the collective.

Understanding is the first step to acceptance,
and only with acceptance can there be recovery.
~ J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Jupiter in Leo is the handle of the New Moon chart. Although Jupiter is not archetypally associated with Aquarius, as such, there are similarities. Both the planet and the sign are known for their expansive vision and penchant for broad knowledge. They both enjoy being daring and going beyond the bounds of the same-old-same-old. And they both need a lot of room to embrace, explore and champion the cause of freedom.

Jupiter is opposite Mercury and Venus, both in Aquarius. Venus has been-there-done-that with Jupey (Jan.19) and is bidding both him and Mercury adieu. However, as Jupiter looks out across the skies, it is Mercury and Venus that he sees first. This can be a time of increasing your awareness about how your thoughts, feelings and desires do or don't reflect the inner potential of who you are inside, as well as the greater possibilities that are out there waiting for you to aim yourself in their direction.

Vision, expansion and breaking out of your familiar shell are repeating themes in this New Moon chart. Another component of the chart that emphasizes this is Jupiter's somewhat wide but applying trine to Uranus. He has already made one pass on Sep.25.2014. Jupiter will give the Big Guy an enthusiastic hug again on Mar.03 and a final one on Jun.22.

Their cooperative, easily accessed trine energy will be with us for several months to come. This New Moon in Aquarius (being Uranus' sign, using modern rulerships) gives this energy a fresh spin and sends it whirling out into space to combine with starry potential. Make a wish, make an intention, envision a possibility that you would like to see coming into your life. If you keep your hopes fed and remain open to unexpected ways that this might manifest, you just might find it happening more easily over the next few months.

Renew, release, let go. Yesterdays gone. Theres nothing you can do to bring it back. You cant "shouldve" done something. You can only DO something. Renew yourself. Release that attachment. Today is a new day!
~ Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience

Uranus is still tightly conjunct the South Lunar Node (true node). This transit is exact on the same day as the New Moon, and since Uranus is a major ambassador for Aquarius, that makes this transit super important right now. The South Node is associated with the challenge of letting go of whatever is past its due date in your life, or dealing with the consequences of hanging on to it after its shelf life has expired. Sounds easy? It's not, and sometimes what is needed can be not what you expect.

Letting go of something sometimes means throwing it away and letting it pass out of your life. But why do that when there's something about it that's still useful, meaningful or helpful? Letting go can also mean separating the learning from the lesson, and letting the lesson go while retaining the learning.

Another way this can play out is to take something that has occupied the foreground of your attention, priorities or values and move it into the background. This way you keep what is good to keep, but it is no longer an immediate concern that sucks up your energy. Forgiveness is a little like that it's not so much about being able to say, "That's okay" (especially if it wasn't), but more like saying, "I've said and done what I needed to, to deal with what happened. I'm at peace about it. I've accepted that it happened and that I don't have to stay there. I'm not going to keep focusing on it. I'm moving on."

Uranus is not usually about forgiveness, as such (more aligned with Neptune or Venus), but this kind of shift in consciousness can be an important resolution to what might otherwise be overreaction and an erratic mindset about a difficult or painful situation.

What crisis, problem or disruption has been in your life recently that you need to "forgive"? How is not doing that getting in your way of moving forward in your life? What is stopping you from being able to accept the past so that you can step forward into the future with a clear heart and mind?

This is a longer term process of healing, resolution and release. You might be able to shift one piece of it (perhaps through a sudden insight or illuminated awareness) and it starts to free up other feelings, thoughts and blockages. Or you may find it's a longer process of nudging that resistance and rigidity bit by bit until that area of your life starts flowing more freely again.

Don't let that Jupiter handle lead you to be judgmental about how you're going through this process. Just keep your intention in sight and allow the natural flow of human nature and the Universe to work with you.

Surprise!! Don't bid farewell too quickly to Aquarius! This is just the first of two New Moons in that sign. This one is in the first degree, and the next one (Feb.18) is in the last degree. The Alpha and the Omega. Stay tuned for more on the Aquarius long and winding road!

Each of us has the right and the responsibility to assess the roads which lie ahead, and those over which we have traveled, and if the future road looms ominous or unpromising, and the roads back uninviting, then we need to gather our resolve and, carrying only the necessary baggage,
step off that road into another direction. If the new choice is also unpalatable,
without embarrassment, we must be ready to change that as well.

Numbers for Nerds
Multiples of Zero Degree New Moons

In a 4000-year span from the year 1 to 4000 CE, there are 134 multiples of 3 or more in a row. (7 seems to be the highest, at least between 1000 BCE and 4000 CE.) However, there are some very curious quirks and oddities.

New Moons
in a row
How many in
1-4000 CE?

• The last time 4 in a row happened was 1889-1890, and it won't happen again until 2185-2186. The last multiple of any size was 3 in a row in 1985, and the next group will be 6 in a row in 2034.

• In the current era, the multiples almost always start in Scorpio (!?) although there seems to be a gradual shift forward through the zodiac over time. For instance, in the 1st millennium, the sequences started mostly in Libra. In the 1000s they start mostly in Libra or Scorpio. In the 2000s mostly in Scorpio or Sagittarius. In the 3000s, they mostly start in Sagittarius. Very peculiar! The only reason I can imagine is some kind of very slow wobble in the nodal axis orbit, or perhaps it is connected with precession.

• Typically there are about 19 years between multiples, so it must correspond to the Lunar Nodes whose orbit is about the same length of time. On the other hand, there can be odd and sometimes vast gaps when there are no multiples of 3 or more. For example, the longest gap during this time is 125 years, which happened in the years 774-899, 1146-1271 and 1518-1643. Other gaps range from 30 to 114 years. In our case, the last multiple before this one happened 30 years ago; the next will happen in 19 years.

• All multiples of 7 occur after 2500 (none from 1-2500). There are 3 7-multiples in a row in 2911, 2930 and 2949.

• Remember, this only examines the New Moons at zero degrees of their signs. There are also many multiples at other degrees, and I imagine they have a patterns, possibly with some differences (e.g. the most common zodiac sign of the first in the sequence).

Jan.21 – Mercury Stationary Retrograde (17:05 of Aquarius; until Feb.11)  (Jan.22 in AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Mercury Retrograde.  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Mercury now goes retrograde for the next 3+ weeks. For up to a week before and after today, Mercury is moving very slowly or stopped during the station. During this time, you may experience intensity, frustration, confusion, miscommunications, or feel like you're getting bogging down in your progress. Mercury retrograde is usually a time when it is best to rethink, rehash, reflect, and tie up old loose ends, rather than begin new ventures.

It is typical for new insights and information to emerge later in the retrograde cycle that you didn't anticipate, which can change the whole picture. Because of this, it is usually advised to avoid making final or permanent decisions (e.g., signing contracts or putting new projects into action), during the retrograde and even up to 2 weeks after Mercury goes direct. However, it is an excellent time to do fact-finding, research and investigation to prepare for major decisions, which are usually best put off until well after Mercury goes direct.

In the meantime, while Mercury is retrograde, expect the unexpected, and leave lots of extra time when planning your schedule (to minimize any disruptions from delays and complications). Stay flexible; for example, it's common to have to reschedule appointments. Do some things that use your intuitive, creative, non-rational mind for a while until Mercury goes direct again.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):

Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius, which can bring up thoughts and ideas that are way off the beaten track! With Mercury's usual conscious thought patterns turned inside out under the retrograde, you might get anything from very weird dreams to brilliant new ideas to thoughts that are scattered and fragmented. Your attention span might be a little short and you could easily feel bored with anything that seems ordinary, monotonous or too limiting. You might also feel frustrated and overwhelmed because you feel a need to stretch your thoughts and perceptions beyond your usual horizons, yet feel trapped by the demands of day-to-day life. On the other hand, you might find you are able to spontaneously reach beyond your usual limits and view life from a totally different angle. Ideas may explode suddenly in your mind and words could burst out of your mouth. You might be tempted to say things for shock value or to break down a wall of resistance that you perceive is in your way. Write down your best ideas to process and develop later.

Jan.23 – Sun sextile Saturn (02:52 of Aquarius/Sagittarius)  (Jan.22 in HAST, AKST, PST, MST, CST)

You have an opportunity now to make some progress in obtaining results in your projects, career, ambitions and creative expression. It is possible to tap into a disciplined mindset, which can be used to take some steps toward goals that you're trying to manifest. You are surrounded by potential to achieve this, although it will not simply be handed to you – you will still have to work for it. Your mind and purpose are likely to be clear and strong now, enabling you to be decisive and productive. Leadership, management and organizing abilities are potentially high right now. Asserting your authority in a situation that calls for it can be done successfully, as long as you don't let yourself become rigid or bossy. It can be a good time to learn or practice new skills, or to apply yourself to any kind of serious study. It is also a time when you could formulate some solid plans for future projects or make some progress with current undertakings. Make the most of it!

Jan.27 – Venus enters Pisces (until Mar.08)  (Jan.28 in AU)

Creativity, harmony and compassion permeate our experiences while Venus waltzes through Pisces. If you are an artist, musician, writer or other imaginative artisan, this can be a time of great creative inspiration. Even if you're not, this can still be a time when your appreciation of the arts is heightened and your sensual enjoyment of life increases. Relationships can be influenced by this placement, by encouraging more openness to love and romance. While this can make interaction smoother and more magical, it might also make you more vulnerable to deception or disappointment. Be receptive don't misplace your better judgment. This can also be a time when you are prone to feeling a Universal Oneness with humanity. You may find you have increased capacity for compassion, caring and connection with others. This, too, can be a mixed blessing – it can bring out your most loving side, but could also make you more easily taken advantage of. You might feel inspired to make a selfless sacrifice, or to donate money or resources as a form of service. It is all done in the name of Universal beauty, truth and compassion. Celebrate this transit by going to a concert of beautiful music, or stroll through an art gallery, or indulge in dreamy sensuality, or let yourself feel a loving connection with all that is around you.

Jan.28 – Mercury Retrograde sextile Uranus (13:09 of Aquarius/Aries)   (Jan.27 in HAST, AKST, PST, MST, CST)

There is potential for brilliance and excitement under this transit. You may be more spontaneous, upbeat and eccentric than usual. If you are used to a fairly predictable lifestyle, it is a time when you may be inspired to experiment with something out of character. If you are used to being whacky, zany and impulsive, this transit can provide opportunities to express this. You may have an increased ability to "think outside the box" if you stretch your mind a little, and there is the possibility of having an "ah-ha!" experience, when answers and realisations fall into place. There is also the possibility of being mentally restless, so that it's hard to slow down your thoughts or apply yourself seriously to your responsibilities. Your attention span may be a bit short for a couple of days. This energy can be used to consider new ideas that seemed outlandish or impossible before, and see new potential in them.

Jan.30 – Venus square Saturn (03:23 of Pisces/Sagittarius)  (Jan.29 in HAST, AKST)

Finances, relationships, social contacts and/or pleasures may seem blocked or require extra effort right now. Manifesting your desires may require added hard work, but this struggle could also bring you closer to your goals. It may feel like there is a huge rock blocking your path that keeps you from fulfilling your heart's desire. It may be necessary to face some difficult aspect of your situation before it is possible to know how to proceed. This is ultimately a problem to be solved by confronting that which is unrealistic, unworkable, or just not in your best interest. This can also be a time when you arrive at a crossroads and must make some firm choices, or when circumstances might force you to change your direction. This transit can make your choice clear, although it might not be the one you hoped for.

Jan.30 – Mars sextile Pluto (14:10 of Pisces/Capricorn)  (Jan.31 in AU)

This can be a time of intense and powerful energy. It can be especially so if you focus your intention to tap into and use this energy deliberately, although if you are triggered into a reaction you might find it is more forceful than you intended. This can be a good time to make changes that have far-reaching, transformative effects. Your powers of persuasion can be stronger now, so be careful you don't try to force things to the point of making something happen that perhaps should be left alone or treated with a gentler touch. Sex and other passionate urges may rise more easily now, although obsession and the need to control your surroundings might come up with them. This transit is perhaps best used to refresh your sense of passion and transform your sense of purpose and direction.

Jan.30 – Sun conjunct Mercury Retrograde (10:20 of Aquarius)  (Jan.31 in AU)

When the Sun conjoins Mercury Retrograde, there is a new beginning in the areas of awareness, communication, use of information and exchange of ideas. This may or may not be heralded by a recognisable event or experience, although for a day or two your consciousness may shift. Your awareness and mental concentration may take a dip into the unconscious, becoming unusually murky and muddy, or it may rise into ultra-consciousness and become suddenly clear and lucid (afterwards returning to the usual Mercury retrograde fog). A new awareness or perspective on what has unfolded during the retrograde cycle thus far may surface now, or an unworkable attitude or perception of these events may fall apart under the weight of new information. This shift of awareness may be obvious or subtle, sudden or gradual, but this transit marks a turning point in the Mercury retrograde cycle. It also marks a time when mental awareness often goes further underground, for the rest of the retrograde period, making it a little harder to operate objectively and rationally in the outside world. Spend some time in your right-brain, intuitive, non-rational mind, which can coax your mental creativity and inventiveness to the surface.

Jan.31 – Mars conjunct Chiron (15:10 of Pisces)  (Feb.01 in AU)

There is a lot of potential for both healing and harm under this transit. The forcefulness of Mars is like a surgeon's scalpel that can heal by cutting through resistance, lethargy, pain or denial – but could also be a knife that causes damage when not used with precision and care. The healing aspect of this energy can bring some relief to chronic or persistent problems, but if inflicted with anger, hostility or insensitivity it could just aggravate those problems. Physical energy could be affected by this transit, either beginning a new approach that can bring improved strength, or by depleting your energy through physical, emotional or spiritual malaise. You might feel a bit discouraged or powerless...or you might start to see a light at the end of the tunnel that you can start to move toward. This is the beginning of a new cycle of working with these combined energies, which lasts about 2 years. To participate with positive intention in this initiation, it can help to observe what conflicts, problems or struggles come up around this time, since there is something about these issues that will unfold and develop over the next two years.

Feb.01 – Venus conjunct Neptune (06:21 of Pisces)  (Feb.02 in AU)

This can be a time of romance and dreamy desire on one hand, or deceptive manipulation and self-serving negotiation on the other hand. At its best, this transit can inspire enormous creativity and healing faith in love and abundance. We can be extremely open to the loftiest possibilities of our close relationships and our ability to attract what and who we desire. However, it may not be as easy to assess these areas in light of the realities that must be dealt with in order to realise that potential. We may find it easier to have faith in the power of negotiation – that the Universe will ensure our desired outcome – but it is also easy to slide into wishful thinking that loses touch with the reality of the situation. If you are considering a major change involving income, investment, spending or resources, it is probably a good idea to do a reality check with a trusted friend or advisor. If you are starting a new relationship or negotiating changes to an existing one, it might be wise to take a long-term view to wait and see if your dreams really will come true or if your hopes are colouring your thinking a bit too much. A reality check with a trusted friend might also help with this. This transit begins a new cycle that brings these issues into our lives to explore and gradually unfolds over the next 12 months (approximately).

Feb.02 – Sun sextile Uranus (13:19 of Aquarius/Aries)

You are more open than usual to spontaneity, surprises and "flying by the seat of your pants!" Your sense of humour and fun are more finely tuned during this transit, as is your ability to break out of old outworn habits. It's a great time to try new things and experiment with something that's out of character for you. In fact, it may be surprising how easy it is to break out of your usual routine...so much so that it's good to be careful not to be too reckless under this transit. Just have fun pushing the envelope! You may also find you want things to be spontaneous and new and out-of-the-ordinary so much that it's hard not to feel restless and dissatisfied with ordinary life right now. But remember that trying to plan spontaneity defeats the purpose of the exercise. And if you are hungering for something new but can't seem to find something satisfying, try digging a little deeper to see what is driving that hunger from inside you. You could find surprising answers.
