"What's a Solar Eclipse?"

"What's a New Moon?"

Read more about the Sun-Moon cycles.

Read more about how you experience PISCES energy in your life.

This Solar Eclipse can only be seen in its totality from up near the North Pole in Europe, although can be seen as a partial eclipse in Europe. Remember to NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT A SOLAR ECLIPSE or you could damage your eyes.

One would think with 600 or so planets in dreamy Pisces during this Solar Eclipse that we would all just drift through it effortlessly and joyfully.

Indeed, some of us might just do that. Whether perched on the wings of a sacred dove, or rising up to embrace breathtaking inspiration or imagination, or surfing a wave of fine vintage wine, there is ample potential to bliss out on whatever lifts your spirits.

But of course it's never quite that simple, is it? It's one thing to cruise serenely across the surface of the water, but if you want its full healing power you've got to wade in and get wet.

In Pisces the healing power of this Water sign is about immersing yourself in an experience so completely that you become it and it becomes you. There is an exchange, a transmutation of energy that takes place to one degree or another.

You see how powerful this can be! You need to choose wisely what kind of water you're willing to dunk yourself into. The currents in those Piscean waters can have quite an undertow that can suddenly carry you away in an unexpected directionfor better or worse.

And yet, the real healing isn't so much in the "troubling of the water" that the universe has brought to an otherwise placid reverie. It comes from learning how to swim through the turbulence, and how to flow around the rocks instead of becoming shipwrecked on them.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal:
it is the courage to continue that counts.
~ Winston S. Churchill

This Solar Eclipse in Pisces is at the last degree of the last sign in the zodiac. This is it! The end of the road. There is nothing more to do except acknowledge, accept and acquiesce. Whatever happened in the past cycle is what it is, and it's time to close that door and open the next one.

The Sun crosses the Vernal Point just 13 hours hour after the Eclipse is exact. The Vernal Point marks the Equinox. In Earth language, this officially shifts the seasons into spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. In Astrologese, we say the Sun is at 0 of Aries.

This is the cosmic reset button. In the undifferentiated ocean of Pisces, we surrender and merge with all that is around us. In Aries we experience the fiery torch of rebirth, where we light up everything around us with playful enthusiasm, survival instinct and the urge to encounter life head-on.

The transition between Pisces and Aries is the cosmic synapse where the spirit of life leaps from nothingness to manifestation. From surrender to conquest. From the waters of pre-birth into the purifying fires of re-birth.

It is a true point of magic. It represents the mystery through which the universe perpetuates itself.

Oh the sea is cold and the sky is grey
Look across the island into the bay
We are all islands till comes the day
We cross the burning water
~ Asimbonanga (We have not seen him: Nelson Mandela),
by Johnny Clegg

So, what to do with it? How do you ride this bubbling cauldron of transformation?

With great faith, strength of spirit, willingness and courage. Faith in that current of life that, even when you get pulled off course, can bring you back to where you need to be on your journey. Strength of spirit to survive the wild ride and know that no matter what happens, you will get through it and be able to look back and say "I survived that." Willingness to make the journey, and the courage to risk failure, yet still believe in the hope of triumph.

Your own personal journey may or may not feel quite that dramatic! And yet, even if you're thinking "ya okay, whatever, I'm just cleaning the house," if you peer into your experience, your intention and your motives, you will see the essence of this cosmic synapse.

You may think you're "just" cleaning the house, but in some way you're also purifying the space, forging a new beginning and repurposing the best of the old into a whole new phase of living. A bit dramatic for "just" spring cleaning? Perhaps, but if you do this with that intention, you'll find that you clean more than just your closets you're transforming yourself and your space.

Let everything happen to you
Beauty and terror
Just keep going
No feeling is final
~ Rainer Maria Rilke

This Solar Eclipse (a.k.a. the New Moon) is the last in a remarkable series of New Moons. This began, interestingly, at the last Solar Eclipse at 0 Scorpio on Oct.23.2014. This began 4 consecutive New Moons at zero degrees of their respective signs (Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius), followed by two New Moons at 29 of their respective signs (Aquarius and now Pisces).

So for 5 months we have been walking through that synapse between the last and first degrees of the signs. And now we are pushing off from the last step in the series, across the mother of all synapses the Aries point.

It's a powerful point because it represents the beginning of the beginning the wellspring from which all motivation, passion, drive, force and purpose are born. So subtle, you might not even realize that something new has begun until much later, but you'll be able to trace it back to now. And yet, containing the pure raw life force that is anything but subtle.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take a step in your life that will harness, embrace and channel that energy, and to do it in a way that is life affirming.

This may be trickier than it sounds. It's all fine and nice to simply make up your mind to move courageously into the future with what feels like righteous purpose and invincible potential. On the other hand, nothing happens in a vacuum everything that emerges out of the present is coloured by what came before it.

Whatever you do will be insignificant,
but it is very important that you do it.
~ Mahatma Gandhi

So the Aries point contains a paradox. You can't move forward while you're weighed down by the past, and yet you can't move forward without the trajectory and impetus that come from that same past. You can't focus and aim your intention of where you want to go from here without being aligned with something from the past that provides a context that supports the new direction.

Put another way, you don't steer a boat from the bow but from the stern. If you want to cross the lake, you point the front of the boat toward where you want to go but where it's pointing depends on using the rudder, which is at the rear of the boat.

In other words, new beginnings don't just happen on their own. They are launched according to what came before them. Why? Because beginnings are really just part of a process. There is no real beginning or end or middle it's all just different points along the same continuum. Pisces knows that and chuckles at Aries who bravely declares that it's starting something totally new. And Aries isn't wrong it's just not seeing the whole picture.

And yet, we hunger for the beginnings. We feel frustrated, weary, discouraged, bored or impatient with the ever-present present, and we long for novelty, improvement, recovery, absolution from past mistakes and redemption through second chances. Anything that can transport us into a future that releases us from the bondage of monotony.

We want beginnings to be impressive and unmistakable. They need to distinguish themselves clearly from what came before, or else we may wonder if we have missed the boat that could have taken us far away from the unhappy or monotonous present. Most of the time life transitions don't happen quite that dramatically. Most of the time life changes gradually, sometimes glacially, and it's usually when we look back over time that we see evidence of change.

Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.
~ Oscar Wilde

Let's shift gears now and look at Jupiter, the traditional planetary ruler of Pisces. Jupiter is the handle planet of the chart, meaning all the other planets are huddled over on the other side of the chart, leaving Jupiter off on its own. It's very significant that Jupiter is a loner planet in the chart, since this underscores the idea that its energy will influence the rest of the chart.

Jupiter is in Leo, where the King of the Gods is also the King of the Forest. Do you think humility and contentment to be an ordinary human being might be a bit of a challenge right now? ;-)

Even more to the point, how you experience and handle the self-esteem and well-being dynamic in your own life is likely to be a big part of the foreground of life right now. This could be about expressing your opinions or being around others who express theirs very strongly, and this might be a bit overwhelming right now. Since Jupiter is retrograde right now, this could more likely be about a struggle to express your own views, beliefs, knowledge and opinions, as you might find it a bit hard to be heard above the noise of others. You might even feel some doubt about what you believe or find you need to re-examine your higher values.

Jupiter is still at the pointy end of a Yod aspect pattern. Whereas it had been bouncing off the Pluto-Chiron sextile (see the Full Moon in Leo, Feb.03.), it's now interacting more specifically with the Mercury-Pluto sextile at the wide end. That means Jupiter and Mercury are in a quincunx aspect together, which could make it a bit difficult to find the right words to describe your priorities and principles, or to really hear and understand those of others.

However, Jupiter is also still trine Uranus (120) after their 2nd of 3 passes on Mar.03. (The last pass happens Jun.22.) Freedom and release continue to be hot topics for speculation, debate and intuitive exploration. It also lends an air of risk-taking and a willingness to lift both feet off the ground when reaching for the stars, especially when it comes to expanding one's awareness of, and connection to, the surrounding world. There can be major benefits for your personal growth when you reach out for a higher understanding of the greater universe and what your place is within it. Be careful not to get caught in the judgment trap, though. Having a critical opinion about something is fine, but seek understanding and wisdom rather than blame and contempt.

Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live.
~ Mark Twain

With so many planets in Pisces right now, it could be easy to think that you're seeing things clearly, when you're really just bringing a mirage into clearer focus. Nothing wrong with a mirage, but if you treat it like it's real then instead of quenching your thirst with cool water, you might wind up eating sand instead.

On the other hand, neither is it good to treat everything like an illusion until it's proven otherwise. This could mean you'll miss some rare opportunities that could sweeten your life and help you take the risk and make the leap across that synapse. The leap won't necessarily vanquish the humdrum in your life (at least not for long), but it can help move you further along the continuum.

Our lives are not our own.
We are bound to others, past and present,
and by each crime and every kindness,
we birth our future.
~ David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

Happy Solar Return to everyone born in the sign of Aries! This is the Vernal Equinox – the time when day and night are of equal length. In the northern hemisphere, this marks the beginning of Spring, as the light increases. In the southern hemisphere, it is the start of Fall, as the light decreases. While the Sun is in Aries, it is a time when all of us (not just those born under the sign of Aries) have the opportunity to experience our Aries nature. The archetype of that nature is like the pure life force that is contained in a single seed. A seed is the residue of a previous cycle of growth – both its resulting harvest and its unfinished business. The Aries energy is about our use of that raw life force within our personal expression of that energy. It manifests in assertiveness, courage, risk-taking, directness, initiative, our sex drive, and the pioneering spirit. It can also emerge as aggression, pushiness, violence, anger, recklessness and self-absorption. The same forceful energy that can fuel damage and single-minded egotism is the same energy that, applied in a different way, is also essential for self-validation, confidence and the drive to make things happen. While the Sun is in Aries, we all have the opportunity to explore how we use this energy in our lives and whether we want to change this. Here are some suggestions about how to explore your Aries nature: Is there something new you want to start in your life? What activities do you want to begin that youve never done before? What will give you the courage and confidence to bring these into your life? If it is not possible to do this, or if you encounter delays, how do you deal with your frustration? Do anger and frustration motivate you to take action, or do these emotions tend to overwhelm and inhibit you? How do you express your anger, and does this clear the air or just create more problems? Use this time to explore these and related areas.

Mar.22 – Mercury sextile Pluto (15:22 of Pisces/Capricorn)  (Mar.23 in AU)

Penetrating insights and passionate communication are possible under this transit ...although, so is speaking more forcefully than you intend to about things that require a bit of delicacy or discretion. It is also a time when your mental concentration can come together so easily that you become obsessed. You may prefer in-depth discussion to small-talk, and it might feel awkward if you aren't able to explore the depths in your interaction or communication with others. However, you likely have an increased ability to pick up on undercurrents of what's happening around you. This is also a time when you can start to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions and ways of communicating. You also have an increased ability to take thoughts, ideas and information and transform them into something healing ...or wounding. Choose your words carefully and mindfully. Writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit can help you gather the deeper qualities.

Mar.24 – Venus sextile Neptune (08:12 of Taurus/Pisces)  (Mar.23 in HAST, AKT, PDT)

Artistry, romance, creativity and faith have the potential to flow freely now. Your creative Muse is whispering in your ear, although it will still take your own elbow grease to turn it into something real. Socially and romantically, things could run smoothly and even a bit magically, so be sure you are clear in yourself about what you really want. This can be a time of blessings and abundance (in all areas of life) ...but there is also the risk of overspending and being overly optimistic in your assumptions about money and relationships. Your natural beauty and warmth can be brought out by this transit, but don't just waste it on creating a faade of outer glamour and charm. Let the essence of your inner beauty and pure spirit shine through your appearance and mannerisms!

Mar.24 – Mercury conjunct Chiron (18:16 of Pisces)  (Mar.25 in AU)

Words can wound, but they can also heal. This transit may bring new awareness of the ways that you need to heal...and perhaps also the ways that you wound yourself or others, especially through thoughts, words and attitudes. You might become aware of harming yourself through negative self-talk or harsh self-criticism. Or, you might expect rigid perfection of yourself and forget that you are a multi-dimensional being who is, by your human nature, inconsistent and fallible. Your mental focus or attitude might have a sharp edge to it that is harsh, or you may encounter harsh attitudes from someone else that are hurtful, perhaps without meaning to be. Words and thoughts can be powerful tools. By reframing the message or situation in a different way, it is possible to turn hurt into healing and ignorance into wisdom. For example, it may help to eliminate either-or thinking by accepting that paradoxes and contradictions exist and may not have to be fully resolved for you to find a workable balance within them. By adopting a bit of a philosophical attitude, you may find it takes some of the pressure off the need for everything to fit together perfectly, which can leave some breathing room for everyone involved to be human.

Mar.25 – Sun trine Saturn (04:49 of Aries/Sagittarius)  (Mar.26 in AU)

This is a great time to apply yourself to serious work. You may feel especially self-sufficient and independent, with a strong and clear sense of self and purpose. There is support for your ambitions as long as you stay grounded and practical in how you approach them, which should come easily right now. Your ability to cooperate and feel comfortable with authority figures is likely to be high, along with your capacity to embrace your own authority and make solid decisions. This is a time when you are more likely to feel grounded and deal with problems in a practical, decisive way. Your energy may be more serious than "party animal," but even if you are in "party mode" it will be easier to realistically know your limits and not overdo it. If you've been waiting for the right time to move forward with or manifest a project or plan that you've been putting together (or wanting to), this could be the time when that happens. The final launch or manifestation may or may not happen now, but you will probably be able to at least move forward in some important steps.

Mar.27 – Venus square Jupiter (12:48 of Taurus/Leo)   (Mar.28 in UK, AU)

"Your eyes are bigger than your stomach" (as Mom used to say). That means you are more likely now to over-indulge, especially in the areas of relationships, spending, desires, pleasure and social contact. Your desire for fulfilment and satisfaction may exceed your resources, and you might not even realise it until the bill comes in later (probably under a Saturn transit ;-). You may also find you require more knowledge, understanding, faith, freedom or optimism than you have available, making it tempting to compensate by inflating what you really have. For example, you might want to resort to flattery, manipulation or over-optimism in an effort to make up for a lack of genuine confidence, rapport or preparation. However, this can also be a time when your creativity is running high and you are able to pull rabbits out of your hat on a moment's notice. The problem is that you could over-extend yourself by doing so.

Mar.26 – United Kingdom ~ Daylight Saving Time begins (until Oct.25)

It's time to "spring forward" in the UK and many countries in Europe, the Middle East and north Africa. If your region observes Daylight Saving Time, set your clocks one hour later the night before, so that it will be the correct time the next day and you won't be an hour late for wherever you're going on Sunday.

Mar.30 – Venus trine Pluto (15:27 of Taurus/Capricorn)  (Mar.29 in HAST, AKT)

Close one-on-one connections with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) will tend to gravitate to a deeper, more intense level now. Instead of automatically doing the diplomatic, "nice" thing, you may find it is more fulfilling to share more of your authentic feelings. It may be possible now to connect with people on a deeper level, while still ensuring that your interests are equally balanced with theirs. The trick is to do this without trying to control or overpower the other person, and it may be easier to avoid those traps now. You could make some deeply intimate connections with people under this transit. Financial dealings with other people may also go smoothly, although it might be wise to get clear confirmation that you're both on the same page about the fine print.

Mar.30 – Sun conjunct South Lunar Node (10:00 of Aries)   (Mar.31 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

This transit involves a creative release or a letting-go of a piece of your self-image that you don't need anymore. However, this letting go can often be difficult, especially if what you have invested a lot of your sense of self in whatever you're letting go. It might feel like circumstances are wrenching it away, or you could feel quite relieved to let go of this old baggage. Letting go can free up a lot of creative energy, life force and joie de vivre, which can then be rechanneled into other forms of self-expression. Follow your heart! It is time to begin letting go of something in yourself that no longer serves you well. This could be a negative belief about yourself, or perhaps dropping an inhibition that has eroded your self-confidence. This transit only happens close to the eclipses, so its energy is likely to come out around the timing of those events more noticeably.

Mar.30 – Mercury enters Aries (until Apr.14)  (Mar.31 in UK, AU)

Directness of speech, fast perceptions and an attitude of "just do it" mark this transit. While Mercury sprints through Aries, you may feel the impulse to cut through and get to the point in conversations and other forms of communication. Body language speaks loudly now, as do actions. At its best, this transit can help words, awareness and insight to arise spontaneously, combined with the courage to express them. On the other hand, you could also say things out of anger, impatience or impulse that you later regret. It may be a time when you'd rather cut to the chase – acknowledge things and move on – rather than hang around to process the details. It's a great time to spin ideas that can be developed later. It is also a good time to think independently and follow your thoughts into new perspectives.

Mar.31 – Mars enters Taurus (until May.11)   (Apr.01 in AU)

Making steady progress with your goals and stabilising your energy are among the effects of this transit. In general, this is a good time to move forward with your ambitions, especially doing the "grunt work" of routine, methodical work – putting one foot in front of the other, as it were, and making slow steady progress in your projects. It's a great time to "make hay while the Sun shines" but don't stay out so long you get sunburned. In other words, be careful not to get so locked into one direction or focus that you become stubborn, rigid, counterproductive, overcautious, or burn out from workaholism. It's common for physical energy to sag and slow down somewhat, although it will usually make up for it in endurance. Mars wants to be fast and impulsive; Taurus wants to go slow and steady. The trick is to pace yourself: do a little every day and don't beat yourself up if you can't do it all at once.

Apr.01 – Venus sextile Chiron (18:46 of Taurus/Pisces)  (Apr.02 in NDT, UK, AU)

Although this transit lasts for only a few days, it is possible to make some progress in your healing and rebalancing efforts, although it will take some effort to make it happen. This may show itself in relationships, social interaction, finances, values, health or your spiritual connection to the Universe. You have an increased ability to negotiate with others and with your circumstances to achieve a fair compromise that results in equal sacrifice and benefit for all concerned. However, there is a risk of wanting to avoid conflict and discord so much that you negotiate beyond what you are truly comfortable with – peace at any price. By accepting and embracing the effort or struggle that is required, you can get out of your own way and achieve a more healing balance in those struggles. You now have increased ability to facilitate changes in situations that are within your control. It can also be easier to accept and adapt to that which lies beyond your control. Your effect on others can be potentially healing right now, especially by helping them find a new balance and point of acceptance in the conflicts and struggles of their lives.

Apr.02 – Mercury trine Saturn (04:37 of Aries/Sagittarius)

It can be easier to take a logical, practical approach to problem-solving and pursuit of your goals now. Your mental outlook is likely to be calm and grounded. This is a good time to make plans and work out the logistics of how you're going to get from "here" to "there" in pursuing your goals. You may find it's time to bring closure to finished goals by distilling and systemizing what you've learned in the process of pursuing those past goals. Or, you might find you are able to draw on past achievements to assist and support your current goals and plans. It is a good transit to bring structure to your thoughts and communication. You may find it's a little easier to accept authority – yours or someone else's – and that you are able to speak authoritatively about things about which you have knowledge or experience.

Apr.02 – Sun trine Jupiter (12:38 of Aries/Leo)  (Apr.03 in AU)

This is a time when your understanding of the Big Picture and your place within it can click into place. As a result, your confidence and self-esteem can be quite high right now. Your ability to see opportunities and possibilities more clearly can produce an experience of being "lucky." Your insight into life and the world around you may be especially bright, optimistic and inspired. This is a "feel-good" transit, when your sense of self can seem to expand and become free. You may feel especially connected to spiritual energy during this time, finding new meaning in your live and the events that unfold around you. Self-confidence can run high now, and you could feel inspired to fight for justice or some cause. At the same time, there is a chance that all this self-assurance and "knowing" could go overboard into over-confidence, dogmatism or over-indulgence if it's not grounded in realism and humility. Just use your best judgment and enjoy this warm, shining energy!
