New Moon In Libra: Changes In Relationships

We are having a New Moon in Libra on October 19th at 7:12pm Universal Time. This marks a new wave of energy influencing the upcoming lunar month, yet the astrological configurations at this time will be the strongest over the following two weeks leading up to the Full Moon on November 3rd/4th.

Libra energies have been present for the last month — since the last Equinox, which is when the Sun always enters this sign. As an Air sign, it is social and intellectual. Libra is about relationships, balance, fairness, equality, and diplomacy. Consideration of others' needs is also a theme, as well as anything to do with beauty, aesthetics, and even creativity and the love of art.

Sometimes I think, I need a spare heart
to feel all the things I feel.
~ Sanober Khan, A Thousand Flamingos

New Moon Opposite Uranus, Conjunct Jupiter in Scorpio

However, the Libra-related needs may be at odds with Uranus in Aries (180°) if both sides are not integrated. This is something that we have already been experiencing on and off since late last year, and also in recent months, during Jupiter's opposition with Uranus in the same signs. Uranus in Aries is about freedom, breaking free, independence, rebellion, and separations, but in some cases it may even bring new ways of applying ourselves within relationships.

New Moon opposite Uranus

This aspect with Uranus may also bring some surprises and sudden changes throughout this Moon cycle, which may be disruptive. This effect will be particularly strong at the time of the New Moon and potentially the day before.

Although this New Moon is in Libra, along with Venus and Mars later on, Scorpio energy will be very prevalent throughout this month, as Jupiter entered this sign nine days prior. Mercury also recently joined. The Sun will be there as well (on October 23rd), three and a half days after this New Moon, as it does every year at this time, but this time it will be joining Jupiter there.

While Libra is associated with relating and relationships, Scorpio represents the deeper aspects of these things, such as deep bonding, sex, and shared values/resources, along with deep desires, fears, intensity, investments, taxes, debts, secrets, hidden matters, suspicions, and mysteries. Negative Scorpio traits include jealousy, possessiveness, power, control, and manipulation over others. It is raw, primal, powerful, complex, and can even be profound and transformative.

Jupiter, along with being triggered by the Sun, is highlighting these themes. An example of this is what is being talked about in the media regarding sexual harassment in Hollywood. On a more positive note, we may also experience an expansive energy related to Scorpio themes.

Jupiter is about learning and growing, so this can be a great time to apply this toward the Scorpio themes mentioned above. It can also be related to deep studies and deeper understanding of certain subjects and how things work, which can be done in a way that is penetrating and even obsessive.

Within hours, tweets with the words “me too” began appearing in droves. By 4 a.m. Monday, more than 200,000 #metoo tweets were published by Twitter’s count. … The messages were striking in their simplicity, and in the sheer number of them. Those two words soon became a hashtag, the top trend nationwide on Twitter and yet another rallying cry for women — and men — who have experienced some type of sexual harassment or assault.
~ Samantha Schmidt, The Washington Post

Mars Entering Libra

Mars is going into Libra on October 22nd and will be extending some of the Libra themes for a while, as it will stay there until December 9th. Traditionally, this is viewed as a poor pairing with Mars, which likes to be direct and assertive. Libra can be indecisive and likes to take things into consideration before acting so it can make both sides happy. Throughout this period, we may find that our actions require more deliberation, which can be more challenging for highly assertive people.

Mercury Trine Neptune

Mercury in Scorpio is moving toward a trine with Neptune (120°) that will be exact on October 24th. Mercury represents how we process thoughts and communicate, and when in Scorpio, can allow for deeper communication.

Its trine with Neptune can deepen intuition and connection to the unseen and unconscious, as well as the thoughts of others. This can also be great for creative Mercurial communicative pursuits such as poetry, music, and visual arts such as photography and video.

Venus Square Pluto

Venus returned home to Libra five days prior to this New Moon and will stay there until November 7th. Despite the New Moon's opposition with Uranus mentioned above, and some upcoming challenging aspects that Venus is making, this can still bring some harmony to our relationships and our social lives.

However, as we approach October 27th-28th, Venus will be moving toward a square with Pluto (90°), which could trigger already existing Scorpio themes of jealousy, possessiveness, fears, as well as passionate intensity and obsessiveness in relationships.

It could also bring challenging or hidden issues to the surface as well, and we may display compulsive behaviours toward loved ones. In some cases, financial issues, or anything to do with aesthetics, might become problematic in some of the same ways.

Mercury will also be in an aspect with Pluto at the same time (60°), which can reinforce some of things already mentioned but can also help us look at the issues from a deeper perspective, as it is also in Scorpio.

There is so much power in choosing to love yourself against all odds and I hope with every kind of painful experience you become more aware who you are and what you are truly capable of. Life hurts but it's also remarkably beautiful if you look past the chaos.
~ Nikki Rowe

Making Intentions and Things to Consider

In what new ways can or should you express yourself in your relationships? What themes are being triggered at this New Moon now that are related to what has unfolded over the last few months, and what can you do to take a new step forward?

What are the deep underlying issues at play here and how can you use this awareness to facilitate changes, transformations, and better decisions? What considerations do you need to make to ensure that you are taking a balanced approach in your actions? What is the root cause of your fears or compulsive behaviours?

These are just some examples of what your intentions can be oriented around, but they don't need to be limited to them. The exact time of this New Moon will be at 7:12pm Universal Time on October 19th. See the sidebar for some local times, or click here to find out what that is in your time zone.

It is best to make your intentions as close to the New Moon is possible, but they can even be done within the first 24 hours following. However, the best time for making intentions would be within the first half hour following or just prior.

There’s no value in digging shallow wells in a hundred places. Decide on one place and dig deep. Even if you encounter a rock, use dynamite and keep going down. If you leave that to dig another well, all the first effort is wasted and there is no proof you won’t hit rock again.

Oct.19 – Sun opposite Uranus (26:31 of Libra/Aries)  (Oct.20 in AU)

This transit brings an encounter with the Awakener! This could come in the form of another person or outside situation that shakes you out of your habitual routine and pushes you to try a new approach to your situation. Life may be very unpredictable right now, requiring you to be spontaneous, innovative or independent in the way you respond to it. This could be stressful or exciting! It is actually showing you a new path in the darkness, like a lightening flash in the night. If you feel startled or caught off guard, or confused about what to do next, find your internal centre and try to be open to what the situation is illuminating for you. You now have a chance to shed some old habits and ways that you are stuck, if you can stay centered in the middle of the whirlwind. You may experience revelations – that "ah-ha!!" feeling – which could open up new possibilities and opportunities for you. However, it might feel like you have little choice but to try these new things (rather than freely choosing them). You could find yourself reacting to others with a powerful impulse to throw off the shackles of anything that feels restrictive, to reclaim your independence – although this could also be motivated by a fear of commitment or responsibility too. It is wise to check your own inner motives, feelings and assumptions before automatically dismissing, rejecting or rebelling against other people.

Oct.22 – Mars enters Libra (until Dec.09)  (Oct.22 in AU)

This is a time when aggression, anger and directness may have to be expressed gently, diplomatically and gracefully. Libra is not the most comfortable sign for Mars, since his typically sharp-edged and forceful nature becomes blunted and filtered through Libran softness and tact. It's a bit like dressing Star Trek's "Worf" in a tutu. However, when these energies combine and work well together, what can emerge is the passion to fight for justice and fairness. This is "the fisted hand in the velvet glove," and can create situations in which you must respond more like a charming but crafty ambassador than a brute force boxer. On the other hand, with force, aggression and directness somewhat blocked or unavailable as options, it may be difficult to respond decisively or purposefully to conflict and challenge. You need to rely more on your wits than your impulses, and strive for a win-win solution than a clear victory.

Oct.23 – Sun enters Scorpio (until Nov.21)  (Oct.22 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT)

Happy Solar Return to all Scorpios! While the Sun is in Scorpio, we all get to explore our passions and probe the secrets within our depths. There is an intensity to the Scorpio experience that goes right to the core, and Scorpio challenges you to take a closer look at how that intensity manifests in your psyche. What are you passionate about and what fires up that passion? What events and experiences have brought you to "rock bottom" and then turned the tide to rejuvenate you back to a new lease on life? What people, causes, beliefs or physical things are so important to you that you would even risk death for? What secrets do you harbour inside, even from yourself? Posing these hypothetical questions doesn't mean you'll bring it on! But doing so can help you tap into the Scorpio experience to understand better how you experience transformation and touch the deepest heart of life itself. The danger is in becoming so obsessed with your passion that you neglect the practical realities. Or, you could become stuck in the "dark side" of transformation and letting go of the old, that you forget that figurative death and transformation are meant to lead into rebirth in order to complete the cycle. During this time, celebrate the endings in your life. Honour the hard times when you have had to face painful losses. And take passionate pleasure in the things that pull you out of your routines and make you feel alive. In some way, they have all allowed you to survive, thrive and grow.

Oct.24 – Mercury trine Neptune (11:41 of Scorpio/Pisces)  (Oct.25 in AU)

Your mind is very open to imagination, dreams and compassion under this transit. This can be a very creative time, when ideas flow like a magical river. It can also be easy to get caught up in yearning and fantasizing about your hidden wishes, although it is possible to channel this into creative expression. (e.g., writing poetry, dancing, wistful music, singing in the shower, whatever!) Listening sympathetically to others' problems may come easily now, and you are more likely to get a compassionate response from others about your own problems. However, it may also be difficult to draw clear and firm boundaries with others, since you are more susceptible to the emotional gravity of others. It is ultimately a time for optimism, hope, creativity and intuition, although it's wise to keep at least one foot on the ground.

Oct.26 – Sun conjunct Jupiter (03:31 of Scorpio)  (Oct.27 in AU)

Confidence, optimism, leadership, vision and well being characterise this transit. Your self-esteem and self-awareness can be wide open now. Your sense of being part of something greater than yourself may be vivid and bright. And you may have increased ability to identify and act on opportunities around you, which can bring you "lucky" prospects. On the other hand, if you have difficulty embracing a positive sense of self, or if you shy away from believing you are a treasured Child of the Universe, then this transit might stir up those difficult feelings to the surface. You could wind up trying to compensate with over-confidence, arrogance, blind faith, or gambling on what are realistically poor prospects. The trick is to tap into the spirit of who you are. Let go of blame and instead apply some honest yet compassionate assessment. Let your spirit shine brightly out to the world, but not so brightly that you blind yourself or others by your own light. Consult a trusted friend for feedback or advice if in doubt. This is a great time to expand your horizons, whether that is through travel, by learning something new, by sharing your knowledge with others, or by exploring the Meaning of Life.

Oct.27 – Venus square Pluto (17:04 of Libra/Capricorn)

Relationships and interactions are likely to be deep, intense and transformative under this transit. The same goes for your sense of beauty, and your material and financial dealings, which may require you to delve far deeper than usual to discover the truth under the surface of things. You may encounter the dark shadow of your desires – the obscure, secret or unconscious hunger that hides underneath the "politically correct" face you show to the world (and to yourself. This is a challenge to be resolved in some way. It might bring out conflict rooted in envy or jealousy, if someone has something (or someone) that you feel you are entitled to. Or, it might prompt you to reach very deep into your soul to find your inner beauty and value. You may be challenged to develop empathy or empowerment about something that initially seemed undesirable, unforgivable or scary. This transit can show you the problem areas that need to be transformed and healed. And seeing these more clearly can be a catharsis that sets that transformative healing in motion.

Oct.27 – Mercury sextile Pluto (17:04 of Scorpio/Capricorn)  (Oct.28 in ADT, NDT, UK, AU)

Penetrating insights and passionate communication are possible under this transit ...although, so is speaking more forcefully than you intend to about things that require a bit of delicacy or discretion. It is also a time when your mental concentration can come together so easily that you become obsessed. You may prefer in-depth discussion to small-talk, and it might feel awkward if you aren't able to explore the depths in your interaction or communication with others. However, you likely have an increased ability to pick up on undercurrents of what's happening around you. This is also a time when you can start to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions and ways of communicating. You also have an increased ability to take thoughts, ideas and information and transform them into something healing ...or wounding. Choose your words carefully and mindfully. Writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit can help you gather the deeper qualities.

Oct.29 – UK and Europe rolls back to Standard Time

If you live in the UK, Europe or in the Middle East, and your region observes Daylight Saving Time, it's time to move your clocks one hour BACK. If you're not sure, check the change dates for your location on DateAndTime.com.

Oct.30 – Mercury square North Lunar Node (21:04 of Scorpio/Leo)  (Oct.31 in AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Under this transit, you might find you need to, or are compelled to, change your mind about where you are heading in your life. You could be confronted with facts or information that contradicts what you thought was real or true about your sense of life purpose, or it might seem like someone is getting in your way. You may be tempted to dismiss this, deny it, avoid it or rationalize your way around it. However, there is probably valuable information coming to you that is important to take into consideration. It doesn't necessarily mean your life destination should be abandoned; rather, you are challenged to see it more clearly. You might also need to communicate information or a point of view that could be unwelcome or unpopular, or difficult to get your point across. In that case, try not to go overboard in standing your ground and focus primarily on what needs to be said and the best way to say it.

Oct.31 – Venus sextile North Lunar Node (21:03 of Libra/Leo)  (Oct.30 in HAST, AKDT)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Your charisma and charm shine a little brighter during this transit. You may be more receptive to what others have to offer, or you might feel more generous with those around you. You could find just the right thingamajig to buy, or you may discover resources you didn't realize you had. It can be a good time to socialize, go on a date, schmooze strategically with people or negotiate an agreement. Aim for a balance of give-and-take in a way that benefits all concerned. Just be careful not to become so seductive that you persuade someone to do your bidding when it's not in their—or your—best interests.

Nov.02 – Mercury trine Chiron (24:48 of Scorpio/Pisces)  (Nov.01 in HAST, AKDT, PDT)

Your mental focus and communication now get an injection of healing energy. Cynicism and depression may soften now, as you become more receptive to a more optimistic viewpoint. If you have been caught up in escapism or "stinkin' thinkin'" (thinking you're more in control of your impulses than you really are), you may now find some relief and healing. Mental argument and critical "self-talk" can now find some reconciliation and acceptance that brings some peace of mind. You have increased ability to find the right words and understanding to help others with their problems. Compassion and empathy may be more accessible because you can identify your own experiences with what you see in others. You might also find someone who can give you good advice or support about your own problems – possibly a teacher or mentor – or you could become this to someone else.

Nov.02 – Saturn square Chiron (24:47 of Sagittarius/Pisces)  (Nov.01 in AU)

Chiron is the planet of wounding and healing, where we face our fear of inadequacy, alienation or endless sorrow. It points to our Achilles Heel where we are the most vulnerable, imperfect and humbled—which ironically is also where we'll find our best, most human side. Saturn is the planet that teaches us to be self-defining, take responsibility and grow up. Bringing the two together suggests a difficult yet productive struggle.

Chiron's orbit moves between Saturn and Uranus – between the mundane world of matter and form (Saturn), and where we awaken and grow beyond the limits of our ego identity (Uranus). As such, Chiron represents the need to balance creaturehood with sentience; our participation in the here-and-now world versus our potential to exceed the sum of our parts. Therefore, when Saturn comes calling at Chiron's door, especially in a stressful aspect like the square (90°), it is usually to let us know that we need to adjust that balance back toward more practical matters.

During this transit you may find your woundedness or distress getting the better of you, requiring you to refocus and reorganize your efforts to deal with them. This can be a bit of a tricky manoeuvre though. You could feel tangled up in discouragement, unresolved conflicts with ghosts from the past or cynicism about the future. It may be tempting to try to use Saturn in a defensive way, to wield control or authority over others. However, Chiron's lessons are usually not about either of these qualities. Chiron requires a certain level of acceptance about what lies outside your realm of personal control, as well as a commitment to change and adjust what lies within it.

Therefore, your best way to turn this corner in the Saturn-Chiron journey is to start by examining where your boundary is between what you believe you can and can't do about problem areas. The question is whether that boundary is still relevant and effective for you. You'll probably find that some adjustments need to be made, but first you'll need to understand why and how to do this. So that's the next step – to discover which skills, resources, policies and principles are missing or have become stuck or needs additional support.

This is the last of 3 passes of this transit: Dec.28.2016, Apr.30.2017 and Nov.02.2017. The last time we saw a Saturn-Chiron square was 41 years ago: 1975-1976 (with an extra long opposition in between, 1986-2006, due to Chiron's eccentric orbit). The next time they square each other will be 2039-2044.

Dates for the current Saturn-Chiron cycle:

Nov.03 – Venus sextile Saturn (24:49 of Libra/Sagittarius)  (Nov.02 in HAST)

It is possible to find some stability in your relationships and finances under this transit, especially if you are willing to negotiate fairly and realistically. You have increased ability to be disciplined about spending and budgeting, and to invest in hard work to maximise your earnings. Your ability to grasp the solid, realistic facts will help you choose wisely in your investments of both money and your interaction with others. Commitment and structure may be easier to approach and achieve than if you take risks now. Your self-worth can benefit from this transit because you may be less inclined to give in to mood swings. On the other hand, if you are prone to depression, you might want to be careful you don't become so grounded and stable that you lose touch with your sense of hope and potential. It is a good time to make concrete progress in matters involving beauty, love, harmony and balance. Keep your pleasures simple and humble for maximum benefit.

Nov.03 – Sun trine Neptune (11:33 of Scorpio/Pisces)  (Nov.04 in AU)

Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Hope, optimism and imagination spring eternal right now, which can bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity can become very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision. And you experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.
