Everybody has a little bit of the sun and moon in them. Everybody has a little bit of man, woman, and animal in them. Darks and lights in them. ... None of us are just black or white, or never wrong and always right. No one. No one exists without polarities. Everybody has good and bad forces working with them, against them, and within them.

Full Moon in Libra: Realizations & Obstacles Around Self Interests And Relations

We are having a Full Moon in Libra on March 31st which will be exact at 12:37pm Universal Time (see the sidebar for other dates and times). However, the Moon will appear Fullest on the night of March 30th in the Americas. This being the second Full Moon of the calendar month of March, makes it the second 'Blue Moon' of this year which is a rare occurrence. (Read Wendy's article about Blue Moons.)

The themes of any Full Moon develop during the week leading up to it and are strongest in the days just before and after it's exact. The Full Moon initiates the second half of the Lunar cycle, and the astrological configurations that are active when the Moon is Full continue to have an impact on us until the next New Moon, two weeks later.

We have been in the Aries season since March 20th, and Mercury also went retrograde in the same sign a few days later. This is a period of adjustments, shifts, and reflection on how we incorporate the themes of this sign: independence, self-interests, action, leadership, and individuality. This zodiac sign is bold and brave!

Aries can also be impatient, inconsiderate, aggressive, and overly anxious. As a very direct, quick, assertive, and forward sign, it can lack thoroughness. This particular Full Moon highlights the opposite sign Libra into the equation, which can help create circumstances and awareness that help us to see how we may have been expressing the more negative qualities of Aries.

Libra is about balance, relationships, consideration, fairness, equality, partnerships, and aesthetics. It is diplomatic, social, and looks at different sides of things and tries to find common ground. However, Libra can also be overly considerate, indecisive, contemplative, and too invested in relationship interests. As a result, it sometimes lacks action and could refrain from pursuing things independently or in the interests of oneself.

The Libra Full Moon brings up this polarity, and we could experience challenges or a push-pull effect between these signs. Ultimately, we should seek and apply some sort of integration and balance of these energies, bringing in more of the positive qualities to work harmoniously with each other.

Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap
but by the seeds that you plant.
~ Robert Louis Stevenson

Sun Conjunct Mercury Retrograde

At the time of this Full Moon, the Sun is aligned with Mercury Retrograde which will be exact the following day. This is known as the 'inferior conjunction', a period in which many of the themes of this retrograde may be highlighted. This can be a time of heightened realizations and insights, however, the usual problematic effects of the retrograde may be more apparent because of this, in some cases.

Traditionally, the 'inferior conjunction' is seen as a period of purification and renewal for Mercury. It is sort of like a 'seeding' period in which any of the developments or realizations we receive can affect the way we apply our minds over the coming months. Pay attention to what is happening in your life on April 1st and reflect on what you need to integrate or change, based on what has transpired.

Once in a golden hour
I cast to earth a seed.
Up there came a flower,
The people said, a weed.
~ Alfred Tennyson, The Complete Works of Alfred Tennyson

Full Moon and Mercury in Aspect with the Lunar Nodes

Full Moon aspecting the Lunar Nodes

The Sun/Mercury in Aries, and Moon in Libra, are in aspect with the Nodes of the Moon which sort of echo similar themes. The North Node is in Leo which, similarly to Aries, is more self-oriented and has leadership qualities. As Fire signs, both are about passion, inspiration, courage, and confidence. The South Node in Aquarius is relationship oriented, like Libra, and as an Air sign it is intellectual and social.

Considering Mercury is Retrograde in Aries, combined with the North Node being in Leo, we are in a time of evolutionary growth in how we incorporate the Fire element and self-interests. If we are overly considerate of our relationships and social dynamics, this can be getting in the way of our individual needs. If we overthink things instead of taking the lead and being bold with what inspires us, this can also hold us back. However, ultimately this is about reconfiguring a new balance in terms of how we incorporate these two sides.

Self-control is the chief element in self-respect,
and self-respect is the chief element in courage.
~ Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War

Mars Conjunct Saturn in the Mix with Mercury and the Full Moon

This Full Moon is in a separating T-square aspect with a Mars-Saturn conjunction which will be strongest on April 2nd, yet its energy will continue to play out over the following days with Mercury triggering it in a square of its own. This Moon cycle was also initiated by a New Moon aligned with Chiron in a square with Mars which is the ruler of Aries.

T-square aspect pattern

Ultimately, all of this combined with Mercury Retrograde in Aries points to issues related to how we express Aries and Mars energy negatively. This could look different for everybody. We may have to address anger or aggression issues, or challenges/blockages in how we assert ourselves individually and in our relationships. Other themes solely associated with Mars could be about wounds around masculine energy, sexuality, and our desires.

Mars conjunct Saturn in Capricorn on its own can be a great time for any sort of disciplined, committed, or concentrated effort towards responsibilities, ambitions, career, or applying structure in some area of our lives. However this, or lack of it, may be the source of any problems that come up at this time.

It may also be a period of initiating a commitment related to the Mars/Aries themes mentioned above. However, we may also need to get real about the way we assert ourselves, or don't assert ourselves enough, and therefore could potentially could face struggles and obstacles.

Mercury retrograde will be squaring both Mars and Saturn from April 3rd-5th during which time our reflections or circumstances may express the potentials mentioned above. In some cases, we may revisit issues from the past associated with these themes. At worst, this can manifest as verbal conflicts, as well as obstacles, limitations, and restrictions to our thinking or communicative efforts.

There is peace even in the storm
~ Vincent van Gogh, The Letters of Vincent van Gogh

Venus Entering Taurus and Moving Towards a Trine with Saturn

The ruler of the Libra Full Moon, Venus, has just entered Taurus, which is the other sign that it rules and is very comfortable there. Generally speaking, Venus in this sign is a time in which we approach relationships, love, and our overall social lives in a practical manner and potentially based in some way on what we value. It is also a period when we seek out quality in that which brings us pleasure in our lives.

Venus will also be moving towards a trine with Saturn which will be exact a week later on April 6th-7th. After all of the troubling and challenging potentials of the Mars and Saturn aspects mentioned above, this helps to bring stabilization to Venus ruled areas of relationships, values, money, or even anything to do with aesthetics.

Sometimes to change a situation you are in
requires you to take a giant leap.
But, you won't be able to fly
unless you are willing to transform.
~ Suzy Kassem, Rise Up and Salute the Sun: The Writings of Suzy Kassem

Things to Consider at this Time

In what ways do you need to strike a balance between consideration and action? How can you approach your relationships and partnerships in a way in which your own needs are met as well? How can you be more responsible in the way you assert yourself with others and/or vice versa? In what ways do you need to get real about where you stand with your relations? What are your limitations in these areas, and how can you put more effort into improving them? Perhaps you may need to end or make major changes in a relationship or partnership?

These are just some examples of what might be coming up for you at this time. If you wish to do any sort of intentional release from something in your life, it is best to do so anytime after the Moon starts to wane after the exact moment of the Full Moon. The waning Moon lasts for two weeks following this period until the next New Moon.

However, keep in mind that Mercury is retrograde and that it is not always the best time to make big decisions, unless it is something that you have been revisiting from the past or if you truly feel that you need to. As mentioned, you may get more clarity around certain areas in your life on April 1st which could be helpful in how you proceed over the coming weeks.

We see in order to move; we move in order to see.
~ William Gibson

Apr.01 – Sun conjunct Mercury Retrograde (11:56 of Aries)  (Apr.02 in AU)

When the Sun conjoins Mercury Retrograde, there is a new beginning in the areas of awareness, communication, use of information and exchange of ideas. This may or may not be heralded by a recognisable event or experience, although for a day or two your consciousness may shift. Your awareness and mental concentration may take a dip into the unconscious, becoming unusually murky and muddy, or it may rise into ultra-consciousness and become suddenly clear and lucid (afterwards returning to the usual Mercury retrograde fog). A new awareness or perspective on what has unfolded during the retrograde cycle thus far may surface now, or an unworkable attitude or perception of these events may fall apart under the weight of new information. This shift of awareness may be obvious or subtle, sudden or gradual, but this transit marks a turning point in the Mercury retrograde cycle. It also marks a time when mental awareness often goes further underground, for the rest of the retrograde period, making it a little harder to operate objectively and rationally in the outside world. Spend some time in your right-brain, intuitive, non-rational mind, which can coax your mental creativity and inventiveness to the surface.

Apr.02 – Australia rolls back to Standard Time  (Apr.02 in AU)

If you live in the Australia region of the South Pacific, and if your region observes Daylight Saving Time, it's time to move your clocks one hour BACK. If you're not sure if this applies to you, check the change dates for your location on DateAndTime.com.

Apr.02 – Mars conjunct Saturn (08:57 of Capricorn)  (Apr.03 in AU)

This is one of those good-news/bad-news kinds of transits. The forceful, exuberant energy of Mars meets the cautious, serious energy of Saturn. This combination can create a lot of productivity or a lot of frustration – and often both. The wild horse of Mars energy can become a workhorse when combined with Saturn's discipline, capable of sustained effort that can bring concrete results. But it may also bring impatience from having your efforts blocked or delayed, or having to be accountable for impulsive actions. If having to conform to discipline, limitation and responsibility tend to trigger you into resisting and fighting back, you might feel a lot of anger and frustration under this transit. On the other hand, it could also help you come to terms with a difficult reality or decision, to take the necessary initial steps that can lead to long-term achievement and development. It is a good time to take action that has been carefully considered and planned out, or to start making plans for a long-term project.

Apr.02 – Sun trine North Lunar Node (13:01 of Aries/Leo)  (Apr.03 in AU) ("What's a Lunar Node?")

You may feel confident, optimistic and empowered today and a couple of days before and after this date. It can feel like the pieces are falling into place and you can make progress in what you're striving to do in your life right now. And if only because of this added self-confidence, this could indeed happen. Just an added caution, though: even though the lights are green doesn't mean you shouldn't look both ways before moving forward. In other words, a reality check as to the wisdom of what you want to do is still a good idea.

Apr.04 – Mercury Retrograde square Mars (09:50 of Aries/Capricorn)  (Apr.03 in HAST, AKDT)

Fiery speech, argument, hot debate and impatience characterise this transit. You may encounter conflicts of interest and want to solve them NOW. And in your haste to find a quick fix, you could wind up creating more problems than you solve. You might also feel like you have hit an impasse or roadblock in a problem that began since Mercury entered the shadow. What you thought was a solution or agreement might now show itself to be unworkable or needing adjustment. Getting angry or frustrated is likely to just aggravate the situation, so it might be wise to vent these feelings well away from the actual situation or people that are triggering them. Your mind may see what needs to be said, but you could wind up blurting it out before you've had a chance to choose your words more carefully. Figure out what you really want, and when you feel a bit calmer and more grounded, THEN have your say. On the other hand, this could also be a time when you find the courage to speak up or assert yourself in situations where you have been overly inhibited before now. Don't become so calm that you lose your edge, but do use good judgment when choosing when and how to act. Use this energy to stoke your motivational fires and use your ideas to generate action (not reaction). Pace and harness the energy like a race horse. This is a time to "do your homework" and find new solutions to existing problems.

Apr.05 – Mercury square Saturn (09:00 of Aries/Capricorn)  (Apr.04 in HAST)

Your thoughts, ideas and communication need to become structured, rational and discreet, although this may not be easy to achieve. You may have to work extra hard to get your point across now, since others might be resistant to your ideas or may not be familiar with the basic concepts. It is a time to be clear, objective and down-to-earth in your communication and thinking, but equally important to do this without going overboard and becoming rigid, autocratic or over-cautious. If you find yourself stuck in a "glass half empty" frame of mind, you might be sagging under the weight of melancholy ...Or, it might mean you are coming to terms with some hard realities and decisions and feeling the gravity of the implications. But also check to be sure you're not taking yourself and your situation too seriously. By applying your best efforts, this can be a very productive time, especially with anything involving communication, writing, organising or logic.

Apr.07 – Venus trine Saturn (09:03 of Taurus/Capricorn)

Stability in relationships and finances characterises this transit. You have increased ability to be disciplined about spending and to invest the hard work to maximise your earnings. Your ability to grasp the solid, realistic facts will help you choose wisely in your investments of both money and interaction with others. Commitment and structure are easier to achieve and embrace than change or taking risks. Self-worth can benefit now because you are less inclined to give in to mood swings. However, if you are prone to depression, you might want to be careful you don't become so grounded and stable that you lose touch with your sense of hope and potential. It is a good time to make concrete progress in matters involving beauty, love, harmony and balance. Keep your pleasures simple and humble for maximum benefit.

Apr.07 – Mars returns from Out of Bounds (was OOB from 29:30 Sagittarius to 11:53 Capricorn; next OOB is Jul.07)  (Apr.08 in UK, AU)   ("What does Out of Bounds mean?"   "What is Declination?")

Mars has been Out of Bounds (OOB) since Mar.16 and now returns within the bounds of the Sun, by declination. While OOB Mars qualities can be somewhat erratic and exaggerated: angry, hostile, hyper-reactive or hyper-sensitive, aggressive, quick to protest or take offence, feeling out of control, or (the flip side of these qualities) depression, lethargy or cynicism. Now that Mars is coming back within bounds, these qualities will likely become more manageable and "back to normal" (whatever that usually is for you).

Coming back in bounds can be a bit of a bumpy landing as that unrestricted energy becomes squeezed back into its usual potency. This is a good time to observe your passions and energy levels, as well as changes in Mars themes in society around you. For several days before and after this date, pay attention to the things that amplify or cool down your Mars energy. Realize that this is an adjustment period, and having some patience with yourself and others can help to smooth and soothe this time.

Alternatively, the re-entry can also be an eventful time when changes in Mars-related areas can occur. For example, you might feel this is the right time to start—or end—a project or make changes to a situation in your life. A shift in how you experience or handle anger, assertiveness, depression or high/low energy levels could inspire you to make positive changes in those areas. This might be due to a change in perspective as a result of your experiences while Mars was OOB.

Apr.10 – Venus square North Lunar Node (12:33 of Taurus/Leo)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Perhaps you're finding that the people in your life are not being as supportive, encouraging or cooperative as you thought they would be, in terms of helping you fulfil your life purpose. Someone might suddenly withdraw their support, or maybe they contradict or interfere with what you're trying to do with your life. Perhaps an argument or disagreement happens and the upset, stress or hard feelings that result seem to cast a shadow on how you feel about your life. If this happens, it's possible that what you disagree about is something you should look at more closely. Are you responding to this situation in a way that truly reflects your values? Or perhaps your values need to be reconsidered. The agreement or balance of priorities between you might need to be renegotiated. This transit might also manifest as problems around finances or possessions, which requires some adjustment on your part. Since this transit usually lasts only a few days, in most cases its effects will not be major. If it does bring up some significant issues, it is probably hinting at a deeper issue, and you would be wise to look at the problem beyond the current circumstances. Other transits (especially to your natal chart) can give you more information about the nature of the situation.

Apr.11 – Sun square Pluto (21:15 of Aries/Capricorn)  (Apr.10 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT, CDT)

This can be a challenging time, when your sense of purpose, identity and direction may feel blocked, overpowered or regulated by forces beyond your control. You may find yourself confronted by difficult situations or people, requiring that you rally an unusually strong show of power to keep from feeling powerless or overwhelmed. The trick is to center yourself in empowerment rather than simple power – that means your power comes from within yourself rather than from controlling people and situations outside of yourself. You might find yourself involved in power struggles or abandonment, either in the present or stirred up from the past. You might be forced to let go of your attachment to something or someone due to circumstances beyond your control. However, this can also be a time when you reach inside yourself and find you have more strength than you thought you did. Adversity may inspire new assertiveness and purpose in you – empowerment born of conflict and struggle.

Apr.11 – Venus trine Mars (13:34 of Taurus/Capricorn)  (Apr.10 in HAST, AKDT, PDT)

It will be a lot easier to balance assertiveness with receptivity under this transit. In fact, it is a great time to take firm action that requires a sensitive touch, and to negotiate agreements in a way that is diplomatic, fair and powerful. Your ability to attract what you desire (money, love, pleasure, flirting, etc.), and to act on those desires, is strong right now, so use it wisely. This may include romantic attraction and sexual interaction, or it might involve artistic creativity. It could also be a time when your actions attract money and possessions, but it could also go the other way – your spending may also increase! Again: use this energy wisely and don't overextend yourself, but do have fun with it!

Apr.12 – Venus sextile Neptune (15:20 of Taurus/Pisces)  (Apr.13 in AU)

Artistry, romance, creativity and faith have the potential to flow freely now. Your creative Muse is whispering in your ear, although it will still take your own elbow grease to turn it into something real. Socially and romantically, things could run smoothly and even a bit magically, so be sure you are clear in yourself about what you really want. This can be a time of blessings and abundance (in all areas of life) ...but there is also the risk of overspending and being overly optimistic in your assumptions about money and relationships. Your natural beauty and warmth can be brought out by this transit, but don't just waste it on creating a façade of outer glamour and charm. Let the essence of your inner beauty and pure spirit shine through your appearance and mannerisms!

Apr.14 – Jupiter sextile Pluto (21:16 of Scorpio/Capricorn)  (Apr.13 in HAST)

A deeper level of understanding and wisdom is possible under this transit, which is in strongest effect for about a week before and after this date. When a broad perspective (Jupiter) is combined with depth of insight (Pluto), the results can be profound! This is a good time to explore deep philosophical and spiritual questions; to delve into the vast mysteries of life. There is a risk, however, that your ideals of truth and justice could also be used as a weapon or used to support arrogance and domination. When someone is convinced they're right, it might not be easy to see how knowledge and power can be misused. It's your own creative ability (in the broadest sense of the word) that can bring these energies together, and it is your own integrity and self-awareness that will guide you in how to use them. When in doubt, consult someone whose opinions and knowledge you trust.

Apr.14 – Mars sextile Neptune (15:23 of Capricorn/Pisces)  (Apr.15 in AU)

There is potential for inspired action now. You could achieve a softening or soothing of the blunt force of anger, frustration, confrontation and conflict, without this resulting in powerlessness or passivity. It may be easier to move forward with your plans and intentions based on the power of faith or ideals. It's important to not get lost in those ideals to the point where you lose sight of what's realistic, but this is a time when you may be more inclined to take a leap of faith and say "Oh what the heck!" Your emotional impact on others (or their impact on you) could be greater than is intended or expected, so use this expanded energy wisely.

Apr.15 – Mercury Stationary Direct (04:46 of Aries; until Jul.26)  (Apr.14 in AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Mercury Retrograde.  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Mercury finally turns direct! Yippeeee!!!! ;-) But we're not out of the woods just yet. For up to a week before and after today, you may experience mental intensity, confusion, and miscommunications or simply changes in your outlook. After being Retrograde for the last 3 to 3½ weeks, Mercury is now taking a slow turn to resume Direct motion. This period has challenged you to rethink and rehash things that required some fine-tuning or revision. The Direct station can be a time when clearer decisions start to emerge from the issues and struggles you've encountered during the retrograde period. Or, it might turn your perspective around so that you're seeing your situation fresh again.

Over the next couple of weeks, while Mercury is still in the Shadow, your brain may feel a bit like it's gradually waking up after a deep sleep. During this time, you can gradually put into practice the learning and knowledge you've gained from your retrograde "dreams" and moonlight visions. It will take time to get fully back into sync with the Mercury direct energy. So, take it slow, one step at a time, and untangle yourself one strand at a time.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):
