Apr.15 – NEW MOON in ARIES (26:02 of Aries)

The New Moon in Aries has a very lively and busy chart with A LOT of noteworthy features! So, in true Aries fashion, let's get right to it.

For one thing, there is a Stellium in Aries: Mercury, Sun, Moon and Uranus, which fuels the Aries Fire. ("What's a Stellium?") That initiatory Aries energy is a force to be reckoned with!

Stellium in Aries

Whether you live in the Southern Hemisphere (heading into autumn) or the Northern (dreaming of spring), it may feel like some part of you is waking up and full of spring fever! You might feel inspired, courageous, impatient, irritable or reactive. What is needed to keep it from becoming too erratic or headstrong is some grounding.

Mars as the planetary ruler of Aries is in its sign of exaltation, Capricorn, and is the perfect source of some grounding energy. This helps to structure and stabilize Mars' normally pushy, assertive, angry or impulsive energy, which strengthens the Aries Fire. Be careful, though, since this energy could support a constructive or destructive Fire energy.

You were born a child of light’s wonderful secret— you return to the beauty you have always been.
~ Aberjhani, Visions of a Skylark Dressed in Black

The New Moon takes place just 30 hours before Chiron makes its entrance into Aries, which is a big deal since Chiron hasn't changed signs since 2011. Chiron is about our woundedness from the imperfect human condition and/or our personal struggles as individuals.

This marks the beginning of shift from learning to "accept what cannot be changed" into taking action to "change what we can." (Read my new article: Chiron in Aries ~ The Way of the Wounded Warrior.)

Chiron's crossover highlights the Pisces-Aries cusp as the point where the zodiac recycles itself and is (re)born anew. Aries is about the impulse to initiate something new, and the transition from Pisces to Aries reminds us that the new can only grow out of the compost of the old.

This is therefore a time to focus our intentions forward (Chiron in Aries). But for best results, we need to steer ourselves in a direction that takes into account where we have been and what may be left over from our previous to-do list while Chiron was in Pisces (since 2011).

You can't depend on your eyes
when your imagination is out of focus.
~ Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

Mercury turns direct just 16.5 hours before the New Moon is exact. It is technically direct but still stationary and therefore very powerful. Mercury is chaffing at the bit to get on with it (whatever "it" is for you). Being one of the 4 seedlings currently sprouting in the Aries Stellium, Mercury's shifting energy into sharp focus – our thoughts, perceptions, ideas and communication. Therefore, don't be surprised if your brain feels like it's on fire with fresh ideas, inspiration and awareness.

You are also reminded, however, that inspiration and exciting ideas are not necessarily the same as clear thinking. There is no Air element in the chart (no planets in Air signs), which will give Mercury an extra heavy workload since he is the quintessential Air energy.

In other words, your logic, reasoning and perceptions are likely to be susceptible to extra Aries heat and therefore more likely to rush to conclusions or react before you've fully thought through the implications of what you're experiencing.

I wonder if fears ever really go away,
or if they just lose their power over us.
~ Veronica Roth, Allegiant

Mars is conjunct both Saturn and Pluto, and at their midpoint. This also forms a second Stellium, this one in Capricorn. That's an awful lot of heavy, powerful, forceful energy coming together all at once!

Stellium in Capricorn

At its best, it can be an awesome time to get a lot of work done, or to launch a project you've been preparing or planning for, or to push through resistance to something you've had trouble facing. On the other hand, it could also manifest as a giant stop-sign that warns, "Here be dragons!" At worst, it could invite depression, cruelty, cold decisions about tender issues, or even violence.

Although Mars is now technically in-bounds (after being Out of Bounds from Mar.16 to Apr.07), it's still just 12 degree-minutes inside the boundary and is therefore still a bit heated up from re-entry into a cooler atmosphere. This will somewhat intensify everything else Mars does—like bridging Saturn and Pluto, and being the ruler-patron of the New Moon cycle.

This Mars-Saturn-Pluto alignment is also a big deal since it energizes the Saturn-Pluto conjunction that is coming in January 2020. Saturn and Pluto are now only 12 degrees apart. Although a bit wide to consider them conjunct just yet, Mars passing between them forms a bridge that brings the Saturn-Pluto energy together.

For the next few years, planets in the Cardinal signs (Capricorn, Aries, Cancer, Libra) will form dynamic aspects (conjunction 0;deg;, opposition 180;deg;, square 90;deg;) and bring those energies together. Consider the Mars bridge a preview of the 2020 Saturn-Pluto conjunction.

Speaking of Saturn, it turns retrograde in just 2 days and is therefore stationary, which makes its energy super strong and dominant in the chart. Combined with Mars and Pluto, this is likely to be an especially intense station.

Potentially, life could hand you an agenda for a future project that requires a lot of planning and patience. (So what else were you planning to do with Saturn retrograde until September?) Or you might find that you're ready to roll with some plans, only to find there's more preparation involved to give it a solid foundation.

At worst, you might feel like you've just run full tilt into a wall of resistance, obstruction or uncooperative reality, making it necessary to go back and figure out what needs to change and to salvage whatever you're trying to do.

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
~ Viktor E. Frankl

Semi-Octile aspect pattern

Going back to that stationary Mercury, it is clenched in an exact semi-square with Venus (45°, sometimes called an Octile). Mercury waking up in Aries from his retrograde dreams is likely to be thinking and speaking in impulsive spurts, very possibly saying things a bit too abruptly, insensitively or without any forethought to consequences. This could get in the way of harmonious interactions with others and disrupt Venus' comfy Taurus flow.

Beware of addictive or compulsive desires taking over your actions before your objective awareness has a chance to consider whether they're in your best interest. In other words, leave the credit card at home in a drawer and bring it out only after careful consideration. And maybe avoid the cookie aisle unless you carry a realistic shopping list.

The Sun-Moon conjunction (a.k.a. the New Moon) is at the Mercury-Venus midpoint and forms a semi-octile aspect to both (22.5°). This creates a miniature but powerful aspect pattern, as yet unnamed – a Mini-Octile perhaps? Consisting of all stressful, square-family aspects (dividing the circle by 4, 8 and 16), the complications and temptations associated with interaction and pleasure, described above, are likely to linger in some form throughout the whole lunar cycle (Apr.15 to May.15).

Hard Wedge aspect pattern

The Mercury-Venus semi-square is part of yet another aspect pattern with Jupiter which I call a Hard Wedge. Venus opposes Jupiter, while Mercury is semi-square to Venus and sesqui-quadrate to Jupiter. With Jupiter's love of excess, situated in Scorpio which is often known for its obsessive edge, this aspect configuration underscores the potential for stationary Mercury's mouth to open wider than usual, possibly saying or consuming more than is wise.

On the other hand, this group of energies can spur you into thinking beyond your comfort zone, finding the courage to say difficult things that need to be said, or focusing your intentions on a more positive, fulfilling use of Venus' pleasure principles.

Always Remember to take your Vitamins:
Take your Vitamin A for ACTION, Vitamin B for Belief,
Vitamin C for Confidence, Vitamin D for Discipline,
Vitamin E for Enthusiasm!!
~ Pablo

Pluto and Mars create a somewhat easier aspect pattern, being sextile to Jupiter and trine to Venus (60° and 120°, respectively). Huber astrology calls this an Ambivalence triangle, although I've always known it as a Wedge configuration.

Whatever you call it, it can provide a powerful mediation to the stress of the opposed planets—Venus and Jupiter. Since the apex planets—Mars and Pluto in this case—have a more positive relationship with both sides of the opposition, they can referee or intercede to smooth over the stress. The trick is not to get stuck in avoidance or escapism, since dealing constructively with the challenges of the opposition will enable you to take better advantage of the whole figure.

Wedge aspect pattern

So, in this case, a negative potential for Venus opposite Jupiter is that you could lean toward over-indulgence in pleasures, like overspending or overeating. You might insist that life must be pleasurable or easy-going, to the point where the harder realities of life get swept under the rug, hoping they'll disappear. Mars and Pluto could intervene to remind you that you can deal with the hard stuff easier by engaging your passion, courage, determination and persistence.

This figure can potentially focus our desire for pleasure (Venus) and liberation from meaninglessness (Jupiter). We tend to get overextended when we are no longer in tune with our bodies and our feelings. We reach compulsively or unthinkingly reach out for something that worked in the past, and don't take the time to checking in with ourselves to see what we actually want in the present moment. Then we wonder why we're not feeling satisfied and why nothing feels like it's enough.

One way we can get reconnected is through our true passion, our authentic desire. To do that requires that we slow down (Capricorn) and be receptive to our inner voice and feelings (Pluto). It can feel a bit like we're being blocked from getting what we want, when we just want to inhale the object of our desire as quickly as possible (Mars).

At first it might not be as fulfilling or as entertaining. And having to take the time to be aware of what's going on inside of us can feel more like an annoying distraction than a healing process (Aries). Eventually, as you exercise and train this "muscle" to operate differently, you will find it comes more naturally, aligning with your natural impulses (Aries).

You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.
~ Henry David Thoreau

Oh—and did I mention that the Sun and Moon are conjunct Uranus? Whodathunk that would almost be an afterthought!? In this case, Uranus is the last piece of a very complex puzzle. Think of it as the fuse that launches the rest of the chart, and being Uranus that fuse could be rather short, unpredictable, unexpected or explosive.

If you are trying to break through an obstacle, Uranus could get you there. If you want to break free of a ball and chain that has been showing you down for too long, Uranus may possibly be the blowtorch that severs the connection. If you long to liberate your authentic self and channel it through your physical and psychological energy, Uranus is your guy.

It is wise to stay on your toes during this New Moon and throughout the coming 4-week lunar cycle. A little Uranus goes a long way in this chart. Just remember that riding this rocket might be a bit hotter to handle than you expect. You don't want to feel like Major T. J. "King" Kong in the film Dr. Strangelove, who ends up jockeying backwards on a nuclear bomb. ;-)

Instead, be sure to check in with your true inner passion, desires and intentions, before lighting that fuse. You might even want to consider releasing that Uranian Fire in spits and spurts, making carefully calibrated adjustments to your trajectory, instead of invoking a Uranian flamethrower. Stay grounded by checking in regularly with your deeper spirit, and let the Mars-Saturn-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn keep you on track.

Courage is the most important of all the virtues
because without courage, you can't practice
any other virtue consistently.

Apr.15 – Mercury Stationary Direct (04:46 of Aries; until Jul.26)  (Apr.14 in AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Mercury Retrograde.  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Mercury finally turns direct! Yippeeee!!!! ;-) But we're not out of the woods just yet. For up to a week before and after today, you may experience mental intensity, confusion, and miscommunications or simply changes in your outlook. After being Retrograde for the last 3 to 3½ weeks, Mercury is now taking a slow turn to resume Direct motion. This period has challenged you to rethink and rehash things that required some fine-tuning or revision. The Direct station can be a time when clearer decisions start to emerge from the issues and struggles you've encountered during the retrograde period. Or, it might turn your perspective around so that you're seeing your situation fresh again.

Over the next couple of weeks, while Mercury is still in the Shadow, your brain may feel a bit like it's gradually waking up after a deep sleep. During this time, you can gradually put into practice the learning and knowledge you've gained from your retrograde "dreams" and moonlight visions. It will take time to get fully back into sync with the Mercury direct energy. So, take it slow, one step at a time, and untangle yourself one strand at a time.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):

Apr.17 – Venus opposite Jupiter (20:58 of Taurus/Scorpio)

This is a time when your desire for pleasure is wide open. Sexual desire could reach out using seduction. Desire for delightful tastes could become overindulgence in foods that may not be in the best interest of your health (e.g., sweets, alcohol, etc.). Spending can be impulsive and easily grow beyond your budget. Money-making opportunities could spill over into workaholic obsession. It might feel like nothing is "enough" and you feel compelled to continually reach out for more and more – a bottomless well of desire. On the other hand, this energy can also bring out your natural beauty and charm in social situations if you are shy or inhibited. If you've done your research and your comparative shopping, this could be the time you make a big purchase. Or you might find the feeling is right to make your move with a love interest and expand your intimate connection with that person. Or perhaps you feel generous and decide to donate your money or talents to a cause that reaches for a higher purpose. Enjoy, but don't blow your budget.

Apr.17 – Chiron enters Aries (until Sep.25.2018)  (Apr.16 in HAST)

Chiron has been in Pisces since 2010 and on Apr.17.2018 begins its transition into Aries. It actually dips back temporarily into Pisces from Sept.25 until Feb.18.2019, but starting now the tide is definitely turning. Then it remains in Aries until 2026.

Since Aries is about taking action (among other things), Chiron working through Aries is likely to be about the wounds and struggles we encounter around how, when and why we take action in situations that may not have a clear path to a resolution. On one hand, Chiron in Aries could rip off the bandage, trying to get the pain over with all at once. In that sense, we could be confronted abruptly with the need to deal with sensitive issues, with few options to reduce the stress.

On the other hand, Chiron in Aries can be about the need to take some kind of action, even when it doesn't solve the problem. The challenge is to do what you can do, even if it's not enough. After Chiron's Pisces lesson to learn how to surrender, the Aries lesson is to balance this out with action in whatever way you can. Read my new article: Chiron in Aries ~ The Way of the Wounded Warrior.

Apr.17 – Venus trine Pluto (21:16 of Taurus/Capricorn)

Close one-on-one connections with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) will tend to gravitate to a deeper, more intense level now. Instead of automatically doing the diplomatic, "nice" thing, you may find it is more fulfilling to share more of your authentic feelings. It may be possible now to connect with people on a deeper level, while still ensuring that your interests are equally balanced with theirs. The trick is to do this without trying to control or overpower the other person, and it may be easier to avoid those traps now. You could make some deeply intimate connections with people under this transit. Financial dealings with other people may also go smoothly, although it might be wise to get clear confirmation that you're both on the same page about the fine print.

Apr.17 – Saturn Stationary Retrograde (09:08 of Capricorn; until Sep.06)  (Apr.18 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

For up to a week before and after this date, your physical and emotional energy may feel a bit heavy, stuck, serious or sad. You might feel held back by circumstances or pressured by people or situations involving structure, rules, authority figures, expectations and responsibilities. For about the next four months, your ambitions and goals can benefit from planning and development at a deeper level. It is a time to rework and refine your goals to figure out how you are going to achieve them. You may also need to examine your motives for wanting to achieve these goals, as well as how feasible they are. You may therefore look at how your goals, or your method of achieving them, ought to be changed. This can also be a time of improving how you deal with authority, expectations, obligations or discipline. Toward that end, today's station could trigger these issues through events, conflicts, challenges or additional "homework." If you've been having problems or are uncomfortable with these areas, especially during the last 3 months, this retrograde period can allow you to gradually build a new way of dealing with them or problem-solving the difficulties. After Saturn turns Direct in 4 months, you will be in a better position to apply what you've learned and developed more fully.

Apr.18 – Sun conjunct Uranus (28:29 of Aries)  (Apr.19 in AU)

Spontaneity, surprises and "flying by the seat of your pants" characterize this transit. You are more open than usual to new experiences and open-minded to new perspectives. Your sense of humour and fun are finely tuned and may spring up unexpectedly and irreverently. It is more possible to break free of old habits and getting out of a rut you have been in. In fact, you may find it is fun to try doing something completely out of much so that it's wise to be careful not to be too reckless under this transit. Have fun pushing the envelope, but try not to rip or shred that envelope. On the other hand, that might be the only way you can get out of a restrictive situation that's holding you back, and this transit could give you the impulsive courage to do just that. Your creativity may come in bursts and in unexpected ways, so try to take advantage of them when they present themselves or else write down your inspiration for future consideration.

Apr.19 – Sun enters Taurus (until May.20)  (Apr.20 in ADT, NDT, UK, AU)

Happy Solar Return to everyone born in the sign of Taurus! This is a time when we all get in touch with the part of us that wants things tangible, practical, plentiful and pleasurable! Taurus is also connected to money, finances, possessions and resources of all kinds, so this is also a time to take stock of what you HAVE in your life – literally and figuratively. Take some time to examine your values. What people, things or principles are worth spending your time, effort, energy or money? It's also an opportunity to explore how separate or enmeshed your sense of self is from your possessions. Do you think less of yourself if you can't surround yourself with wealth? What forms of abundance and blessings are in your life, and are you consciously grateful for them or do you take them for granted? Use this Taurus energy to approach goals in a methodical way, appreciate your blessings, and understand life at its most concrete, basic level. This might sound about as exciting as watching the grass grow, but the Taurus way is to slow things down enough that you can experience and take pleasure in the simple things, in the Here and Now. Enjoy it!

Apr.22 – Pluto Stationary Retrograde (21:17 of Capricorn; until Sep.30)  (Apr.23 in AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

For up to a week before and after this date, Pluto's energy is especially strong and intense. You might experience this in the form of intensity, power struggles, deep psychological awareness or strong libido. You could encounter the need to face aspects of yourself or others that are disturbing or difficult to accept. There may also be some part of yourself or your life that has fulfilled its purpose and needs to be shed like a snake's skin. Over the next 5 months (while Pluto is retrograde), you will work at loosening and letting go of that "skin," and working toward the rebirth that will come out of it. This can also be a time when you become aware of the areas where you need to strengthen your personal empowerment or possibly need to tone down the way you wield power.

Apr.24 – Mars sextile Jupiter (20:11 of Capricorn/Scorpio)  (Apr.23 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT)

There is potential for optimism, cheerfulness and increased energy during this transit. You will probably have to go after it (rather than it just falling into your lap), but you can probably increase your mood and energy level by applying a bit of effort. Your self-confidence and general attitude can improve, although be careful you don't become so caught up in feeling good that you ignore common sense, caution or realism. This is a good time to consider the moral, philosophical or greater implications of your actions, and then make adjustments to bring your behaviour into alignment with your beliefs, aspirations and ideals.

Apr.24 – Venus enters Gemini (until May.19)  (Apr.25 in AU)

Relationships, finances, resources and values take on an air of curiosity, communication and cleverness. It is a good time to discuss, think about and create strategies to improve these areas or make them more enjoyable. You may be especially curious, flirtatious or easy-going now – so much so that you might drift into superficiality (which might be a welcome rest from more intense or committed social activity). It can be a good time to exchange ideas and information with others, especially in a social context. Schmoozing and networking with others are prime examples of this. This can also be a good time to negotiate contracts and agreements with people, in this atmosphere of information exchange. Just remember that it's one thing to use charm and humor to influence the direction of the discussion, but it may not be wise to indulge in blatant manipulation of others.

Apr.24 – Venus sextile Chiron (00:24 of Gemini/Pisces)  (Apr.25 in UK, AU)

Although this transit lasts for only a few days, it is possible to make some progress in your healing and rebalancing efforts, although it will take some effort to make it happen. This may show itself in relationships, social interaction, finances, values, health or your spiritual connection to the Universe. You have an increased ability to negotiate with others and with your circumstances to achieve a fair compromise that results in equal sacrifice and benefit for all concerned. However, there is a risk of wanting to avoid conflict and discord so much that you negotiate beyond what you are truly comfortable with – peace at any price. By accepting and embracing the effort or struggle that is required, you can get out of your own way and achieve a more healing balance in those struggles. You now have increased ability to facilitate changes in situations that are within your control. It can also be easier to accept and adapt to that which lies beyond your control. Your effect on others can be potentially healing right now, especially by helping them find a new balance and point of acceptance in the conflicts and struggles of their lives.

Apr.25 – Mercury Direct square Saturn (09:05 of Aries/Capricorn)  (Apr.26 in AU)

Your thoughts, ideas and communication need to become structured, rational and discreet, although this may not be easy to achieve. You may have to work extra hard to get your point across now, since others might be resistant to your ideas or may not be familiar with the basic concepts. It is a time to be clear, objective and down-to-earth in your communication and thinking, but equally important to do this without going overboard and becoming rigid, autocratic or over-cautious. If you find yourself stuck in a "glass half empty" frame of mind, you might be sagging under the weight of melancholy ...Or, it might mean you are coming to terms with some hard realities and decisions and feeling the gravity of the implications. But also check to be sure you're not taking yourself and your situation too seriously. By applying your best efforts, this can be a very productive time, especially with anything involving communication, writing, organising or logic.

Apr.26 – Mars conjunct Pluto (21:17 of Capricorn)

This transit is a volatile and powerful combination of energies, with enormous potential for both creative healing and destructive damage. At its best, this transit can spark a creative force for transformative change that rises from a deep, underlying truth and unconditional acceptance of ourselves, warts and all. At its worst, this energy can be cruel, violent or relentlessly obsessive, aiming to impose power and control over others. How you experience this will largely depend on how you deal with your wants and desires. Are you so attached to the outcome that you are focused only on the external effects and results? Or can you also focus on strengthening your empowerment from within, so that desired change begins with yourself? The urge to express sexual, passionate and intimate feelings may also run high now. Have fun with it, but remember to use good judgment too. Your powers of persuasion can be ardent and strong now...but since this transit applies to everyone, so can other people's. This could lead to zealous competition (think "Battle of the Titans") or to a powerful blend of passionate creativity (think "alchemical transformation"). Which will you choose?

Apr.27 – Mercury trine North Lunar Node (10:54 of Aries/Leo)  (Apr.28 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Today, and up to a couple of days before and after, things can feel like they're starting to make sense. What you read, hear and observe may seem more obvious and your ability to put this into words could flow more easily. You might identify and figure out how to utilize the tools, skills, assets and ideas that could bring you further down the road toward whatever destination you're pointed toward. However, a reality check about how wise it might be to act on these ideas and benefits is still a good idea. Write down good ideas to follow up with later.

Apr.29 – Mercury-Sun Greatest Elongation as Morning Star (09:00 of Aries)   ("What's the Shadow?"  Read my articles about Retrograde Cycles.  Read my article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury reaches its greatest elongation from the Sun today, meaning it's as far away from the Sun as it can get. Mercury is the Morning Star, meaning it is visible in the Eastern sky just before sunrise, which occurs after Mercury has turned Direct and a few days before it leaves the Retrograde Shadow.

Thoughts, awareness and decision-making tend to be clearer, and your path ahead may be easier to see. It can be a good time to reflect on the information and awareness you've gathered in the last couple of months and finalize plans for how best to act on these. If you were feeling confused or frustrated during the retrograde period, things can make more sense now. Let this be a time of fresh perspective and awareness.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):

Apr.29 – Sun trine Saturn (09:02 of Taurus/Capricorn)

This is a great time to apply yourself to serious work. You may feel especially self-sufficient and independent, with a strong and clear sense of self and purpose. There is support for your ambitions as long as you stay grounded and practical in how you approach them, which should come easily right now. Your ability to cooperate and feel comfortable with authority figures is likely to be high, along with your capacity to embrace your own authority and make solid decisions. This is a time when you are more likely to feel grounded and deal with problems in a practical, decisive way. Your energy may be more serious than "party animal," but even if you are in "party mode" it will be easier to realistically know your limits and not overdo it. If you've been waiting for the right time to move forward with or manifest a project or plan that you've been putting together (or wanting to), this could be the time when that happens. The final launch or manifestation may or may not happen now, but you will probably be able to at least move forward in some important steps.
