Jul.27 – LUNAR ECLIPSE ~ FULL MOON in AQUARIUS (04:44 of Aquarius)

Here in Toronto, Canada, the eclipse apparently arrived early. :-(

As I write this, we are struggling to understand what happened and why, when a gunman shot up a popular part of town last Sunday night (July 22). 15 people were shot, including 2 girls, ages 10 and 18, who died. This is not believed to be motivated by terrorism, but rather someone whose struggles with severe mental illness tragically broke out of its containment in a violent way.

My deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to the victims, their families, and all who were traumatized by what they witnessed. I also have compassion for the family of the shooter who are devastated to know their son was responsible. Toronto is in shock and grief, but also standing strong and coming together as a community.

This incident was a tragic, extreme and negative example of the kind of energy that is surging out of this Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius.

We are living in chaotic and troubled times when many conflicting opinions, priorities and philosophies are colliding on an unprecedented scale. Under this kind of stress, it's all too easy for reactions to spin out of control. So, when a volatile eclipse season comes along, like this one, those who are vulnerable or susceptible to overreaction often get caught up in the stormy energy and act out their own internal turmoil.

Thankfully, there are other ways this energy can, is and will be used, not just through violence.

"How do you feel?" Lola asks.
"Like I've just had every single one of my organs harvested while I'm still alive."
"Good to know you're not overreacting," she says.
~ Cath Crowley, Words in Deep Blue

Oh Mars, Mars, Mars....

Moon, Mars, South Lunar Node

Mars is one of the key culprits in this mess for a few reasons. For one thing, Mars is fused in conjunction with the eclipsed Moon, less than a degree apart. And both of them are tightly aligned with the South Lunar Node, which amplifies the effect of whatever is nearby. An eclipse brings intense energy to begin with, and for Mars to be there too makes this an especially high-energy eclipse.

In addition, Mars is still Retrograde which makes his energy work in unusual, sometimes volatile ways. And Mars is also far Out of Bounds (OOB) by declination, which can bring unpredictable, unexpected and unconventional expressions of Mars energy. The net result can unfortunately sometimes be disastrous, as Toronto and other traumatized communities are well aware.

Mars is often a wild card, especially when retrograde or OOB, and as a result, the worst side of his reputation frequently precedes him. For example, Mars is the planetary guard dog of anger, aggression, hostility, angst, violence or even war, which aren't exactly considered pleasant or even desirable. Mars in a bad mood is an energy to handle with great care.

Fortunately, Mars can also be a badass dude in all the best ways! His energy can also used for assertiveness, productivity, decisiveness, taking action, passion and standing up for something we feel is right. And thankfully, using Mars in more constructive ways can be a choice. We can choose to focus our intention in a beneficial direction and tame the beast just enough to make him useful.

Sometimes things happen that trigger us into old unresolved anger or current frustration, and when that happens it often feels less like a choice and more like an automatic reflex to lash out. The feelings that explode from within are very real, even if some of them are rooted in the past rather than the present, based on assumptions rather than confirmed facts, or magnified by a present situation that has already drained your patience and resilience.

So, it's important to cultivate the ability to take a step back when we feel like Mount Vesuvius is rising from deep inside. This allows us to do a reality check: How much of my reaction is about right now, and how much of it is, in all honesty, not entirely about the present situation? Becoming aware of what is driving your feelings and motives in the current moment is essential to having the ability to choose freely how you want to respond.

In the kind of unstable energy we find ourselves in now, it's important to find ways to stay grounded. The idea is to bring spiralling emotions back down to earth where they can be dealt with and resolved effectively. So, take a step back, take a breath or take a break before you reach for the flamethrower.

We can't be afraid of change. You may feel very secure in the pond that you are in, but if you never venture out of it, you will never know that there is such a thing as an ocean, a sea. Holding onto something that is good for you now, may be the very reason why you don't have something better.

The Sun-Mars Glare

The Lunar Eclipse consists of the Sun in Leo at the North Node and the Moon in Aquarius at the South Node. The South Lunar Node is known as a place where you let go of stuff that no longer suits or serves you.

It may also represent a time when you need to move some issues in the foreground of your mind or your life and place them in the background, where they are no longer a primary focal point for you – in other words, let go of the high priority or attention that you have give it.

With Mars retrograde there along with the eclipsed Moon, this is a time to look at how you select what to give your energy to. And being in Aquarius, it may be helpful to examine the groups of people you align yourself with—friends, associates, social media hubs, etc—and decide if they are bringing out the best of who you want to be. If they are, then choose how to invest your energy with them more clearly. If not, it may be time to move them lower down your priority list.

This alignment also includes the Sun opposite Mars, which marks the mid-way point of the Mars retrograde cycle. This is when we see Mars most clearly as a separate energy—both visually and symbolically. Mars is biggest and brightest in the sky when opposite the Sun, since he is closest to the Earth at that point in the retrograde cycle.

Mars also happens to be closer than usual to the Earth during this current retrograde, similar to what happened in 2003. That's when bogus emails started going around claiming "Mars will look as big as the Full Moon!!" which I'm sorry to say gets circulated every couple of years when Mars goes retrograde again.

Please don't fall for this! And please don't share those fake articles on social media, even in jest. It only contributes to confusion and ignorance. If you want to share something about that, share my article that explains why Mars sometimes looks especially big and bright in the night sky.

And if you haven't yet watched for big, bright, red Mars in the night sky, don't miss this beautiful spectacle over the next few months!

Sun opposite Mars

When the Sun opposes Mars, Mars is always retrograde. We perceive, experience and project Mars energy more clearly than at other times. It's like the difference between being able to see someone from head to toe better when they're standing away from you, versus trying to see them when they're right in front of your nose.

So, Sun opposite Mars can be a time when you have the chance to see more objectively how Mars energy works in your life. Instead of being up close and personal with Mars issues, they might appear in your life coming from outside of you. You may find you're affected by others' behaviour or external events more than usual. Regardless how valid those events are, it's a good opportunity to look past the current annoyance and see what is being stirred up inside you, involving more personal issues that go beyond the immediate situation.

All you really need to know for the moment is that the universe is a lot more complicated than you might think, even if you start from a position of thinking it's pretty damn complicated in the first place.
~ Douglas Adams

Uranus Jumps In

Mars is not the only wild card in the lunar eclipse deck. Uranus forms a T-square aspect pattern with the opposition between the Sun on one side and the Moon-Mars conjunction on the other, as well as the Nodal axis.

If Mars didn't spice up the soup enough for you, Uranus is here to add some extra zest, armed with a bucket of hot peppers. Take Mars' unpredictability, excitement, spontaneity and excess, and multiply it by 10 and you'll get the idea of what Uranus brings to the kitchen.

T-square: Sun, Moon, Mars, Uranus

At its best, this T-square could launch you like a rocket into action. If you're stuck in some way, then fasten your seatbelt and use this energy to propel you out of that rut where you can resume your journey. On the other hand, you might find you're tripping over yourself or tangled up in technology problems, perhaps because your vision is moving faster than your mind's ability to process and manage the information.

You might experience flashes of insight that shake your world and release pent-up energy, which could light up the path ahead like lightning at nighttime. What you see there might be exciting, liberating and illuminating, although it might also be disturbing, upsetting or unnerving.

Uranus is considered by many astrologers to be the modern planetary ruler of Aquarius, where the lunar eclipse is happening, so this T-square is highly significant. The primary focus of the Uranus/Mars/Eclipse energy is to break out of whatever holds us back or release some part of ourselves that has been cooped up. You might feel it's time to push past an obstacle, make changes in a friendship, or find a new social circle.

He seemed to think we were on the same page.
I wasn’t even sure we were reading the same book.
~ Jodie Andrefski, The Girlfriend Request

The Brat is Back

And of course, we mustn't forget dear Mercury, who is distinguishing his bratification in grand style right now. First and foremost, Mercury is retrograde and stationary, beginning the day before the eclipse and is still partile to his stationary degree (in fact, only 7 minutes of arc from the station point). Therefore, the usual Mercury retrograde shenanigans are extra strong right now.

In addition, Mercury is unaspected. Mercury has no major aspects to other planets and precious few minor ones. In fact, other than the occasional tip of the hat from the Moon, Mercury is unaspected from Jul.15 to Aug.04! Unaspected planets tend to behave unpredictably, erratically, and in an all-on or all-off kind of way. So, when His Tricksterness decides to make life "interesting," it's likely to get very interesting.

While attempting to conduct business-as-usual in the everyday world, this can definitely be a pain in the backside. There are a number of ways you can manage your sanity and avoid damaging others' during this time. Allow lots of extra time to get to wherever you're going. Stay flexible and don't be surprised if you have to reschedule appointments or redo things that you thought were already done.

Take an extra backup of your computer files, especially the ones you would weep over losing. When doing computer work, save your changes regularly and frequently. Be on the lookout for confused, misleading or inaccurate communication. Double-check that you didn't misunderstand before crawling down someone's throat.

Adapt. Let go of needing to control what happens around you, beyond urgent situations. Adapt again. Learn to laugh. Adapt again. Take your time. Breathe. Relax your shoulders. Breathe again. Adapt again.

Be open to the possibility that the Universe is trying to show you something – some new insight, awareness or point of view. While you're cursing the twists and turns in the road, allow part of yourself to watch the scenery and notice things you haven't seen before.

Anything that causes you to overreact or underreact can control you, and often does.

Reference Lists

If you've lost count of all the crazy happening in the skies right now, you're to be forgiven. It's a lot!. I've put together a list of planetary factors with some dates, which may help if an organized approach makes you feel more prepared to deal with it all. (My Virgo Moon likes it that way too.)

With so much going on at this Lunar Eclipse, it's easy to slip into reactive mode and nervously look around for all the bad things that could go wrong. That's understandable. It's instinctual to anticipate anything that could threaten your survival so you can avoid problems.

And make no mistake—bad things can happen under these transits. We are already seeing this in dramatic events happening worldwide in recent months and especially in recent weeks: unprecedented wildfires, deadly heat waves, massive flooding, and in some areas (like Toronto) increased incidents of violence.

Astrologically, we can blame—er, attribute this to the following intensifying factors.

What To Do, What To Do...

So, are we to just sit back and watch the disaster coming? Is this planetary line-up capable only of negative manifestation? Of course not. So, what can be done to use this powerful energy to its best effect?

Make a point of spending some time alone, away from all the external noise, to give you time and space to process everything that's happening. Being continually overwhelmed can muddy your judgment, perspective and perceptions.

What need for change is showing itself in your life? What do you need to break free from that is holding you back or keeping you from being the best you can be? What is holding you back, holding you down or holding you up?

Granted, some circumstances cannot simply be dismissed or abandoned, but you can change your relationship to it to give your spirit, heart and mind more wiggle room. Can you change your routine? Change the importance you give to certain frustrations or stresses, while giving more time and energy to other priorities?

How are you reacting or responding to stressful situations? And does that really make the situation better? Be honest. Maybe it does, or maybe it doesn't. This is a good time to reassess whether you might be over-reacting to a problem, which might actually be doing little more than raising your blood pressure. It might be better to pick your battles and use only as much force, insistence or control as is truly needed, instead of trying to incinerate the enemy just to be sure you win the battle. ;-)

Or, you might be under-reacting, trying to keep the peace at the cost of stuffing down your anger or frustration in unhealthy ways. Perhaps you're not giving yourself permission to find and use your courage to stand up for what you feel is right. Even if victory seems futile, speaking your truth with grounded integrity might be healthier and more effective than resigning yourself to simmering silence.

Envision bold new possibilities for the future, but keep your expectations flexible. What you foresee could manifest, yet look very different from what you imagine and still fulfil much of the promise and purpose of what you want to happen.

If what happens doesn't match your intentions, there are usually reasons for that. The timing may not be right. Other things need to happen first to lay the groundwork. You might have conflicting intentions or expectations that muddy the waters. Your intended result may have unintended consequences that would cause other problems. And remember that others who would be affected by your vision may have their own, and your dream—no matter how right you feel it is—doesn't get to take precedence just because you want it to.

We are co-creators of our shared space. There is enough dynamic energy in the skies right now that how you utilize it and what you contribute to that shared space could have an impact, both for yourself and for the world around you. When you go to react to something, ask yourself: Is this the highest use of this energy I am capable of?

Between stimulus and response there is a space.
In that space is our power to choose our response.
In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

Jul.27 – Sun opposite Mars (04:08 of Leo/Aquarius)   (Jul.26 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT)

When opposite the Sun, Mars is always retrograde. This also marks the half-way point in the Mars retrograde cycle. In the upcoming 6 weeks you will be involved in the deeper work of Mars retrograde. So: what have you been investing your energy in over the past 6 weeks (the first half of Mars' retrograde cycle)? Maybe you've been busy developing a new project? Or perhaps you've been wrestling with a situation that involves anger, confrontation, assertiveness, aggression or hostility? Or possibly you've been focusing on the need to strengthen and build up your physical energy, health or fitness, or changing your physical appearance?

The next 6 weeks call for a deeper, more steadfast commitment to your goal, ambition, challenge or issue. For example, if you've been consumed with frustration, impatience, anger or passions that seem to have a life of their own, this can be a good time to find some constructive or safe outlets for your emotions. This can make it possible for you to have your feelings, rather than them having you.

As another example: if you're involved in developing a project or improving your physical energy, be careful not to drive yourself to the point of burnout. Instead, pay attention to the times when you hesitate or shy away from taking action – this may be showing you important clues to what holds you back and how you can break out of being stuck. Or, watch for times when you go into overdrive and push to the breaking point – you will be able to see what is driving you behind your conscious purpose; for example, maybe you're trying to prove yourself for reasons that have nothing to do with the task at hand, or you might be trying to win someone's approval so that you'll feel worthy, acceptable or visible. These clues may wind up being the most valuable and meaningful lesson of this Mars retrograde cycle for you.

Remember to take a break sometimes and allow yourself to appreciate and celebrate your victories, big and small, and to acknowledge what you've accomplished so far. If you're planning a launch or a significant decision, it might be better to wait until Mars goes direct before you assume that you're at the point of clear sailing. Use the final week or so before Mars goes Direct to ensure your t's are crossed and your i's dotted.

Jul.27 – Venus trine Pluto (19:38 of Virgo/Capricorn)   (Jul.28 in UK, AU)

Close one-on-one connections with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) will tend to gravitate to a deeper, more intense level now. Instead of automatically doing the diplomatic, "nice" thing, you may find it is more fulfilling to share more of your authentic feelings. It may be possible now to connect with people on a deeper level, while still ensuring that your interests are equally balanced with theirs. The trick is to do this without trying to control or overpower the other person, and it may be easier to avoid those traps now. You could make some deeply intimate connections with people under this transit. Financial dealings with other people may also go smoothly, although it might be wise to get clear confirmation that you're both on the same page about the fine print.

Jul.28 – Sun conjunct North Lunar Node (05:53 of Leo)   (Jul.29 in UK, AU) ("What's a Lunar Node?")

For a few days before and after this date, your sense of self and purpose are in sharper focus. You might encounter people who understand you more than usual, or you could find the courage to shine a little brighter than you normally do. However, this also brings a challenge to find and fulfil your potential within a broader context of life, friends, associates, groups and the world. It is a good time to look at your vision of the future—on a personal level but especially the wider vision you have for the world around you. What is your greatest potential over the coming year? Ten years? The New and Full Moons just before and after this transit are usually Eclipses. Check to see if those Eclipses form major aspects to your natal chart, since these will show a future direction for you over the coming months. The Sun-Node transit happening right now will help to focus those changes.

Aug.01 – Mars retrograde square Uranus (02:32 of Aquarius/Taurus)  (Aug.02 in NDT, UK, AU)

Erratic action and unpredictable impulses can surface under this transit. Active energy is more available now, but it can be very hard to control its direction, speed, intensity or predictability. Under this volatile atmosphere, unconscious or suppressed emotions (like anger, frustration, fear or desire) can jump out when you least expect them. Being accident prone is not uncommon. This can be great if you're trying to release inhibitions, find courage to sprint forward or break out of an old habit. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that your actions won't turn out to be destructive, counter-productive or too much of a good thing. You might be tempted to take greater risks than is wise, but this risk-taking impulse can also break you out of a rut too. It's important to use your best judgment when faced with this kind of potent yet volatile energy.

Aug.03 – Mars sextile Chiron (02:02 of Aquarius/Aries)  (Aug.04 in UK, AU)

This transit gives you the opportunity to take action that can bring some healing resolution to some ongoing problems you've been having. For example, if you've been suffering from weakened energy or chronic health problems, this transit could bring a bit of relief, especially if you're willing to invest some effort to move yourself forward. Or you might find that you have extra self-confidence to deal with a dilemma that has not wanted to go away. You might also find yourself in a position where you can help others find some relief or empowerment related to their suffering and chronic struggles. Problem solving of all kinds can benefit by taking an attitude of proactively doing what you can do, and then let go of what you can't.

Since Mars is retrograde and in its second pass of three, this is a chance to dig deeper into how you manage your physical energy and what you can do to make that more effective. The events brought up during this pass can also provide an opportunity for you to observe how you deal with impulse control (too much or too little) and how that affects your spiritual outlook. For example, does taking action or making decisions make you feel afraid? Do you prefer to just hold your nose and jump, or to analyze your options first, or maybe to avoid the situation altogether? How's that working for you? If it works well for you, then look for ways to streamline or clarify the process. If it doesn't work well, look for what holds you back from doing it a different way and address that deeper issue.

Aug.06 – Sun square Jupiter (14:26 of Leo/Scorpio)  (Aug.07 in UK, AU)

You may be inspired to expand far beyond your usual boundaries during this time, although this may or may not work in the way you hope it will. It can be a time of challenge, when you decide that now is the time to move beyond your current horizons and make the ultimate push for something you believe will bring you happiness, fulfilment and prosperity. How successful you are will probably depend on how prepared you are for what comes next. Your judgment and your ability to see things objectively and realistically can be a little "off" during this transit, since your hopes and ideals might distort what is actually possible. It can be easy to overestimate the envisioned results, or you might underestimate the amount of work necessary to sustain your dream and prevent it from being just a flash in the pan. Try to avoid being overconfident and making promises you can't keep (including to yourself).

Aug.06 – Venus enters Libra (until Sep.09)  (Aug.07 in UK, AU)

Venus glides like a graceful model through her own sign of Libra, giving you the opportunity to expand your interactive style, cultivate diplomacy, beautify your surroundings, schmooze with social connections, and discover a new fashion statement. Find something beautiful, balanced or harmonious to appreciate or do during this time. You might consider visiting an art gallery, or watch a romantic movie, or listen to music that moves you into a peaceful place inside. You might feel drawn to going shopping for beautiful clothes or items to decorate your home. It can also be a good time to negotiate agreements with people, in a way that is fair and is focused on a win-win solution. Do something to celebrate, express and discover your inner and/or outer beauty. Find new ways to balance your own interests with those of others, which generates good will and harmony.

Aug.07 – Uranus Stationary Retrograde (02:33 of Taurus; until Jan.06.2019)  (Aug.08 in AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Uranus now appears to go backwards (retrograde) against the backdrop of the stars. This is often a turning point in situations involving issues of spontaneity, freedom, breaking free of old patterns, rebellion and expressing your personal uniqueness. It could feel a bit chaotic or erratic—or perhaps just spontaneous and exciting—for up to a week before and after this date. However, Uranus' ultimate agenda is to clear the way for your true spirit to manifest in your life. You may experience unexpected changes, flashes of insight, or disruption of established situations that aren't working well (which might include computers, Internet, mass media, groups, friends or future plans). This can be the awakening of a new perspective, to be brought into a clearer focus through open-mindedness and being willing to try new things. If you are going through major transits from Uranus to your natal chart, you are more likely to feel the energy of this station.

Aug.07 – Venus trine Mars Retrograde (01:03 of Libra/Aquarius)  (Aug.08 in UK, AU)

It will be a lot easier to balance assertiveness with receptivity under this transit. In fact, it is a great time to take firm action that requires a sensitive touch, and to negotiate agreements in a way that is diplomatic, fair and powerful. Your ability to attract what you desire (money, love, pleasure, flirting, etc.), and to act on those desires, is strong right now, so use it wisely. This may include romantic attraction and sexual interaction, or it might involve artistic creativity. It could also be a time when your actions attract money and possessions, but it could also go the other way – your spending may also increase! Again: use this energy wisely and don't overextend yourself, but do have fun with it!

Aug.08 – Venus opposite Chiron (01:54 of Libra/Aries)  (Aug.09 in AU)

You may be extra sensitive to other people's suffering, struggles or dilemmas under this transit. Your own ongoing issues in relationships or finances may undergo a kind of "healing crisis" in which you endure increased problems and must use extra tolerance, compromise or negotiation to keep things from collapsing into a worse state. At the same time, you may be able to reach a new level of acceptance and peace – not necessarily by solving the problems, but by letting go of the struggles that are not as important as you thought and by making the best of the ones that are left. Other people or outside circumstances may give you a push in this direction, which might feel at first like old wounds are being opened up. But this is an opportunity to find new ways to bring healing and balance to old problems, especially using tolerance, compromise and acceptance.

Aug.08 – Sun conjunct Mercury Retrograde (16:27 of Leo)  (Aug.09 in UK, AU)

When the Sun conjoins Mercury Retrograde, there is a new beginning in the areas of awareness, communication, use of information and exchange of ideas. This may or may not be heralded by a recognisable event or experience, although for a day or two your consciousness may shift. Your awareness and mental concentration may take a dip into the unconscious, becoming unusually murky and muddy, or it may rise into ultra-consciousness and become suddenly clear and lucid (afterwards returning to the usual Mercury retrograde fog). A new awareness or perspective on what has unfolded during the retrograde cycle thus far may surface now, or an unworkable attitude or perception of these events may fall apart under the weight of new information. This shift of awareness may be obvious or subtle, sudden or gradual, but this transit marks a turning point in the Mercury retrograde cycle. It also marks a time when mental awareness often goes further underground, for the rest of the retrograde period, making it a little harder to operate objectively and rationally in the outside world. Spend some time in your right-brain, intuitive, non-rational mind, which can coax your mental creativity and inventiveness to the surface.

Aug.09 – Venus square Saturn (03:07 of Libra/Capricorn)  (Aug.10 in UK, AU)

Finances, relationships, social contacts and/or pleasures may seem blocked or require extra effort right now. Manifesting your desires may require added hard work, but this struggle could also bring you closer to your goals. It may feel like there is a huge rock blocking your path that keeps you from fulfilling your heart's desire. It may be necessary to face some difficult aspect of your situation before it is possible to know how to proceed. This is ultimately a problem to be solved by confronting that which is unrealistic, unworkable, or just not in your best interest. This can also be a time when you arrive at a crossroads and must make some firm choices, or when circumstances might force you to change your direction. This transit can make your choice clear, although it might not be the one you hoped for.

Aug.11 – Mercury Retrograde square Jupiter (14:47 of Leo/Scorpio)  (Aug.07 in HAST, AKDT, PDT)

You may be seeing the weak links in your knowledge, understanding or beliefs right now. Your ideas and words might seem to fall short of what your mind envisions, or you might be unable to convince others of your point of view. As a result, it can be tempting to over-compensate with more self-confidence, faith or optimism than you actually have. Or, you might give out "too much information" by over-explaining or through nervous rambling. Alternatively, you might encounter someone else who does this and perhaps have a blaming or judgmental reaction to them. This is an opportunity to learn something about how you might jump to conclusions or blame, possibly triggered by a situation that challenges your beliefs, opinions or perspective. To learn more about this part of yourself, try taking some time to think about what is really bothering you or what you really need to say in that situation. There may be a higher truth to be found if you open your mind to something you're reluctant to acknowledge, rather than looking for a "final truth" around which to close it.
