Chart for the Full Moon in Aries
Chart for the Full Moon in Aries

Dearest Readers,

I'm finally back! :-) My sincere thanks for your patience! I'm so sorry to have missed the updates for the Full Moon in Pisces and the New Moon in Virgo. Unfortunately it couldn't be helped. I am home at last after spending almost a month in hospital following rather major—and very unexpected—surgery. (Let's blame it on the Mars station!) My recovery is progressing well, although it will take some time before I am fully up to speed.

Many thanks to those who wrote to express concern and support, and my apologies for being delayed in replying to you – I had no access to website emails until I got home! I still expect to be at the SOTA Astrology Conference to lecture on Out of Bounds Pluto, so if you haven't yet registered, do it quickly as they are filling up fast.

I have put together 2 pages of just the Low-Down transits (no New/Full Moon articles) that were missed: for August 26 to September 9 and for September 9 to 24. So, you can look back and see what the heck was happening during that time. ;-)

It's good to be back! :-)

Happy Transits, everyone!

Warmest regards,
September 2018

Together, we form a necessary paradox;
not a senseless contradiction.

Sep.24 – FULL MOON in ARIES (01:59 of Aries)

Aries in its purest form loves to GO! No holding back. No dickering over strategies or details. None of this "look before you leap" stuff. Just adventure, action, directness and forthrightness. Act from the heart. Go with your gut. Just move it, Dude!

I imagine it was probably an Aries who came up with the Nike slogan, Just Do It! ;-)

Aries is ruled by Mars, which is kind of like Aries incarnate and personifies all things Aries. Action, adventure, courage. Aries loves a good fight where it can test and exercise its valour. (Remember the movie Michael, played by John Travolta as Archangel Michael and his love of The Battle?)

When Aries the Ram is forced to slow down or is held back, it's usually not very happy about it—and might not comply without a fight! However, when combined with strategic, structured and purposeful caution, delays or limitation—by Saturn, for example—the result can be extremely impressive! This Ram becomes a powerful work horse, capable of accomplishing much more than if that horse was free to live by impulses alone.

This Full Moon in Aries is one of those times when the Ram is challenged to submit to the yoke and become a beast in service to a greater purpose.

Fatigue, discomfort, discouragement
are merely symptoms of effort.
~ Morgan Freeman

T-square: Sun-Mercury opp Moon-Chiron, sqr Saturn

Saturn forms a tight T-square aspect pattern with the Sun-Moon opposition. This sets up a dilemma for the Aries part of our nature – the impulse to leap forward is complicated by limitations, conditions or consequences that may hold up a sign saying, "You can't get there from here, at least not without making it so problematic that it's just not worth the aggravation."

The Moon is tightly conjunct Chiron, which might give a clue as to what kind of problems are in the way. For example, Chiron could represent health problems (which sure fits in my case!). Or, other circumstances that hold you back might trigger deep feelings of fear, depression, frustration, rage, or apathy that stems from worrying that you're trapped, helpless or powerless.

Chiron is currently at 0° Aries, poised to retrograde back into Pisces (Sep.25 to Feb.18.2019). The challenge of Chiron is to rise above limitations by first accepting where you are, rather than simply trying to force your way out of it (which Aries would prefer to do). Also, being at a critical degree and on the World Axis (0° of the Cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) there is likely to be a sense of urgency, as your path keeps shifting through this powerful transition degree.

The truth is you're not trapped or helpless or powerless, although the way forward may have to take a different route than you want to take. Taking a different path through the jungle will require heightened awareness and some strategic brain power that allows you to calculate what step to take next.

Enter Mercury conjunct the Sun in Libra. Mercury is here to tell you that whatever you do to get through this time, there needs to be balance. You can move forward, but it will work best if you drag one foot to slow you down a bit to help stabilize you. You can create change as you move into the future, but if you simply try to sever ties from the past, they will follow you in unconscious ways.

Only through awareness and connection to both the past you're coming from and the future you're moving toward, can you effectively manifest change that will be lasting. And that is best done by slowing down, not rushing headlong into where you're aiming for. So, Saturn has the thankless job of pacing you by letting you crash into the walls of structure, caution and taking responsibility for the consequences of your actions.

Renew, release, let go. Yesterday’s gone. There’s nothing you can do to bring it back. You can’t "should've" done something. You can only DO something. Renew yourself. Release that attachment. Today is a new day!
~ Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience

Mars, as the planetary ruler of Aries, contributes significantly to this complex Full Moon dynamic—by further complicating it! Mars is still square Uranus, now separating from the exact pass of this aspect (Sep.18). As Saturn is trying to slow down and make the Full Moon in Aries more grounded, Uranus is goading Mars into give Saturn the finger and daring him to do what he damn well pleases!

The result could be a bit like riding a wild horse – erratic, changeable, unpredictable, swinging between extremes, constantly changing direction, and you have to hold on tight until it settles down. Mercury advises you to keep your wits about you, don't lose your cool and don't give up! Give it some time to find the best balance.

Mars in Aquarius is also coming up to the final conjunction to the South Lunar Node (True Node: Jun.08, Jul.20 and Sep.26). During the 5 months or so as these two crossed paths, Mars has gone through his retrograde cycle. This has given you a long time to work through letting go of old Mars issues—or coping strategies for Mars issues—that no longer serve you well.

This could include re-evaluating how you deal with and express anger, how you manage physical activity and energy, your vision of the future and what you are doing to make that happen, or what enables you to find the courage to honour your individuality and apply your willpower to express that. Or, it might challenge you to lessen the priority that you give to Mars issues, moving them more into the background so that you can focus on other priorities – in other words, make room for other things in your life and move beyond your current relationship to Mars.

Don't be afraid to let your past and present
come together to create something new.
~ Michelle Davidson Argyle, Pieces

In addition, Mars has been Out of Bounds by declination since Jul.07. ("What does Out of Bounds mean?") This has led to a loooong period where Mars (anger, energy, assertiveness, action, motivation, courage) has been somewhat erratic, over-the-top, unusually intense, and sometimes a bit difficult to access in order to get control over it. This has amplified other transits that involved Mars during that time, including Mars conjunct the South Node (Jun.08, Jul.20, Sep.26) and Mars square Uranus (May.16, Aug.01, Sep.18).

Mars now comes in for a landing at the same time as the Full Moon in Aries is exact! How's that for making an entrance? Ta-da!! When a planet crosses Out of Bounds (OOB) or In-bounds (In-B), it can often encounter some turbulence. And especially when it comes In-Bounds, it can be a time of manifesting what was learned while the planet was OOB. The fact that Mars comes In-B just as the Full Moon takes place in its sign, increases the manifestation potential.

Pegasus, by Odilon Redon

The effects may be varied. On one hand, Mars issues you've been wrestling with for the last 3 months will require concrete solutions and expression. It's not enough to let your wild Mars soar above it all where it can avoid dealing with real-world consequences. You need to bring it down to earth and tame it, but without breaking its spirit.

You're not just riding a bucking bronco, you're harnessing Pegasus in order to manifest something cosmic and brilliant into earthly form. The challenge is not to abandon your personal Pegasus (your inspired dreams of freedom and cosmic Oneness), nor to remain outside in the stratosphere by avoiding the manifest world, but to find ways to bring the two together in ways that are effective, creative and dynamic.

For example, you may have found some relief from worldly constriction during that time, but now it's necessary to come back down to earth and confront whatever it was you felt you needed to escape from. And the fact that Mars must now tangle with the contradictory energies of Uranus and Saturn as this is taking place emphasizes the tricky, complex job you have.

One quick last mention: Venus is turning retrograde in about 2 weeks (Oct.05 to Nov.16). This happens just before the New Moon in Venus' sign of Libra (Oct.08). We are moving from a Mars focus to a Venus focus. Watch for signs over the coming weeks of shifting energy from assertiveness to negotiation, from forcefulness to cooperation, from demand to compromise, from winner-take-all to win-win.

Do stuff. Be clenched, curious.
Not waiting for inspiration's shove or society's kiss on your forehead.
Pay attention. It's all about paying attention. Attention is vitality.
It connects you with others. It makes you eager. Stay eager.
~ Susan Sontag

Sep.24 – Mars (finally!) returns from Out of Bounds (OOB since Jul.07; 28:36 Capricorn to 08:28 Aquarius; next OOB is apr.20.2019)  (Sep.25 in AU)   ("What does Out of Bounds mean?"   "What is Declination?")

Mars has been Out of Bounds (OOB) and now returns within the bounds of the Sun, by declination. While OOB Mars qualities can be somewhat erratic and exaggerated: angry, hostile, hyper-reactive or hyper-sensitive, aggressive, quick to protest or take offence, feeling out of control, or (the flip side of these qualities) depression, lethargy or cynicism. Now that Mars is coming back within bounds, these qualities will likely become more manageable and "back to normal" (whatever that usually is for you).

Coming back in bounds can be a bit of a bumpy landing as that unrestricted energy becomes squeezed back into its usual potency. This is a good time to observe your passions and energy levels, as well as changes in Mars themes in society around you. For several days before and after this date, pay attention to the things that amplify or cool down your Mars energy. Realize that this is an adjustment period, and having some patience with yourself and others can help to smooth and soothe this time.

Alternatively, the re-entry can also be an eventful time when changes in Mars-related areas can occur. For example, you might feel this is the right time to start—or end—a project or make changes to a situation in your life. A shift in how you experience or handle anger, assertiveness, depression or high/low energy levels could inspire you to make positive changes in those areas. This might be due to a change in perspective as a result of your experiences while Mars was OOB.

Sep.25 – Sun square Saturn (02:51 of Libra/Capricorn)  (Sep.26 in UK, AU)

It is necessary for you to come to grips with limitations, boundaries or expectations. If you have been avoiding some task or obligation, this transit might bring consequences from that avoidance or a warning of consequences to come. You might also encounter a situation that requires you to accept unwanted responsibility or restricts your freedom in some way. You might be faced with some part of your life being pruned back, either to rein in something that is out of control or to make room for new growth. This is likely to be more or less stressful depending on how comfortable you are dealing with responsibility, authority, limits and hard work. If you have a hard time with authority issues, you might find yourself in conflict with someone in authority under this transit – perhaps in part because your buttons are getting pushed. On the other hand, this could also be a time when you are challenged to take action or make a decision that involves taking on more responsibility. It is also a time when you may have to find better ways to deal with personal boundaries – accepting others' or learning to assert your own. You're bumping up against reality, so try to work constructively with it, not hurl yourself against it.

Sep.25 – Chiron Retrograde enters Pisces (until Feb.18.2019)  (Sep.26 in UK, AU)   (Read my article on Chiron in Pisces)

The Wounded Healer now cloaks himself in the slippery, soothing, spiritual energy of Pisces. This combination is full of potential for spiritual transcendence, but there is also the danger of getting stuck in suffering for the sake of suffering.

In mythology, Chiron is finally relieved of his suffering by exchanging his life for Prometheus' freedom. Prometheus himself had endured suffering from torture, which was a punishment from Zeus (King of the Gods) for having given fire to Humanity. Archetypally, there seems to be a lesson in Chiron that by giving oneself to a higher cause, it has the power to not only alleviate one's own suffering but that of others too.

With Chiron in self-sacrificing Pisces, this quality if even more amplified. Our suffering, woundedness and struggle can become a vehicle for helping, healing and transforming the problems both within us and around us. There seems to be a promise of potential redemption that can make all that suffering worth the agony and waiting for relief.

And yet we mustn't forget we are in Pisces – the sign of illusion, deception and misguided good intentions. That quest for redemption and healing could also lead us into deeper problems if we become too dazzled by the promise and blinded by illusion.

In the myth, Chiron didn't simply offer himself up on impulse. He obtained Zeus' permission and it was Heracles who approached Zeus on his behalf. In other words, there was lots of opportunity for reality-checking and ensuring that the sacrifice would indeed result in the release of Prometheus. In the same way, any sacrifices we make for a greater cause need to be vetted through the Powers That Be and supported by others around us.

It is also interesting to note that in the myth, it was the poisoned spear of Heracles that had wounded Chiron and left him chronically wounded and suffering. And it was Heracles who represented Chiron and pleaded his case to Zeus. There are two messages in this part of the mythology that could be applied to Chiron, and especially so with Chiron in Pisces.

For one thing, it is the very thing that wounds us that can act as the means that will free us from that wound. This is a similar concept to homeopathy in which the essence of the thing that causes the illness becomes the healing agent. However, in order for the cause of the wound to assist in our liberation, we must first get to the point where we are not stuck in blame, suffering, victimization, cynicism or self-pity. These qualities are a potential danger with Pisces, as it is so easy to become engulfed within and swept away by our experience.

When Chiron first dipped into Pisces from Apr.20 to Jul.20.2010, the world witnessed the poisoning of the waters with the Gulf oil crisis. In fact, the explosion that began the "oil spill" occurred on the same day that Chiron entered Pisces, and the leak was finally stopped just 5 days before Chiron moved back into Aquarius. It's very possible that the consequences and implications from this disaster will emerge again as Chiron returns to Pisces, and that it could well take until 2018, when Chiron finally leaves Pisces, before the damage, results and causes of this crisis have been fully explored and dealt with.

On a more personal and psychological level, you may find that all is not well with much that you have taken for granted in your life. It may be a time when you discover subtle or pervasive problems or dis-ease that lie at the root of chronic or persistent problems in your life. While Chiron is in Pisces, it may be necessary to explore, understand and address these underlying causes and influences, in order to detoxify, clarify and heal the way they affect your life.

You might not be able to fully change, resolve or reconcile the source of these problems, but you can change how you respond to them and the role that they play in your life. In the same way that Heracles, the wounder of Chiron, became the agent of his salvation, it is by using your suffering, woundedness, struggle and difficulties for some higher purpose that you can begin to lift yourself out of despair and helplessness.

Chiron was in Pisces from 1910-1918 and 1960-1969, and is there from 2010-2018, and then won't be there again until 2061-2068.

Sep.26 – Mars Direct conjunct South Lunar Node (04:10 of Aquarius)  (Sep.25 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

This transit's range of influence is roughly 2 weeks before and after this date, although it reaches its peak now. The South Lunar Node is where we let go of, move away from, express or release something. Although the South Node can involve loss of some kind, it can also signify that what had previously been actively in the "foreground" of your life is now moving into the "background" and becoming assimilated as simply one part among many, rather than being a specific focus. Often whatever is being released is something we took in, embraced or began to move toward when Mars passed over the North Lunar Node. The North Node is sometimes known as the Dragon's Head, which eats or consumes. The South Node is known as the Dragon's Tail, which... well you get the idea. ;-) Since this involves Mars, what is being embraced or released likely has to do with anger, aggression, assertiveness or forcefulness. This might also be about sex or physical energy or something being set into motion. Depending on your natal chart, this could also involve the houses Mars rules and resides in, as well as where the current transit is taking place.

This is the last of 3 passes of this transit: Jan.02, Jul.20 and Sep.26. Mars is now direct and in the post-retrograde shadow. If you haven't yet jettisoned a bunch of stuff that isn't doing you much good anymore, now is the time to take some action to do just that. Either let it go and watch it drift away, or give it a push into the background so that it's no longer a primary focus for you. It could also be a time when you lose something or someone from your life involuntarily. Although it might trigger a time of grieving from a loss that you would prefer not to happen, it may be a signal that you are ready to fly on your own now.

Sep.27 – Sun sextile North Lunar Node (04:00 of Libra/Leo)  (Sep.26 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT, CDT)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

This can be a feel-good time when you feel like you're on your game. Your sense of purpose and direction feel like they're flowing just right. Opportunities may present themselves and you are in a good position to recognize them and know how to make them work to your advantage. Even if you encounter difficulties, you are likely to be more confident in approaching them and therefore better able to find effective solutions. Pay attention to people who cross your path for 2-3 days around this time, since they could offer resources, support or connections that could be helpful. Just be careful that you don't resort to manipulation to make things happy your way. If you have to force something to work then maybe there's a better solution.

Sep.27 – Sun trine Mars (04:48 of Libra/Leo)  (Sep.28 in UK, AU)

Your energy, purpose, vitality and health are likely to be strong and clear during this transit. Your sense of purpose is supported by your ability to assert yourself and take a stand for what you want and what you believe in. In general, this transit is a great time to take action, especially if you have prepared the way and have all your ducks in a row. If you've been waiting for a spurt of self-confidence or motivation, this transit could give you the push you need to move forward in your plans or goals. Strive to be spontaneous rather than impulsive, and confident rather than arrogant.

Sep.30 – Pluto Stationary Direct (18:45 of Capricorn; until Apr.24.2019)  (Oct.01 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

For about a week before and after, you may experience energy that is intense, compelling and transformative, as Pluto changes direction to its normal forward motion. If you've been going through deep, cathartic changes in your life over the last 6 months to a year, you may find that this station brings a shift in how you are able to approach and act on those changes. This might be a time when you feel the weight of power struggles or loss in your life, but it can also galvanize empowering strength in yourself that you didn't know you had. Above all, it is a time when your deepest, most authentic Self can start to emerge and be reborn anew.

Oct.02 – Mercury square Pluto (18:45 of Libra/Capricorn)  (Oct.01 in UK, AU)

You are faced now with a challenge to empower your communication and perceptions, although this may not come easily. It could involve having to face some rather difficult truths that might be a bit disturbing or hard to accept. However in doing so, you gain a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself, your situation and your role within it. Obsessive or persistent thoughts that are morbid or paranoid are possible, which could be helped by finding something more positive to focus on or a creative outlet. Communication (from others or yourself or both) could be intense, intimidating or even downright damaging, since it may be tempting to get caught up in power struggles and domination. But communication can also be used now to heal, by cutting through hypocrisy and insincerity in order to reach a deeper authenticity and truth – like lancing a boil so that healing can take place.

Oct.05 – Venus Stationary Retrograde (10:50 of Scorpio; until Nov.16)  (Oct.06 in AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Venus Retrograde.  Read even more about Venus Retrograde.  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

For up to a week or more before and after this date, you may experience intense energy in the areas of relationships, finances, beauty, self-worth and harmony. Similar to Mercury retrograde, Venus retrograde is a time when we go back over the same ground we just came through in order to refine, polish and adjust the affected areas in our lives.

Venus retrograde can be a time when latent problems in relationships (all kinds, not just romantic) become outright conflicts. Or, previous ongoing conflicts may take a rest and go underground for a while, as everyone regroups and reassesses what is important to them. If you have been keeping the peace at any price, this could be a time when that peace suddenly falls apart and you are faced with having to deal with old unresolved problems.

Finances also can shift direction. Income and resources might become somewhat scarce, forcing you to let go of or rethink your material focus. Or, you might find your material resources booming ...possibly along with your spending. Issues about personal appearance, fashion, beauty and charm may also become conspicuous by their absence or by their sudden importance. In general, it is a time to examine your value system and decide whether the people and things that you have cherished still hold the same high priority for you, as well as whether you are truly living according to your values.

Here are the key dates of this Venus cycle (for North American Eastern Time):
