Dec.22 – FULL MOON in CANCER (00:49 of Cancer)

Happy Solstice!! Happy Yule!! The sky is celebrating by throwing an extra bright Full Moon party, right on the Solstice axis!

Why extra bright? Because the next New Moon and Full Moon (Jan. 5 and 21) are also eclipses, and the Moon is always brightest when close to the eclipses.

So, if you get a chance and the weather cooperates, be sure to check out the Full Moon tonight and a few days before and after.

And even if the weather gets in the way, this Full Moon asks that you take extra special care of yourself as we leap into 2019.

Why? Because Mars.

For one thing, because Mars is on the loose at this time. Mars makes a bee-line into Aries on New Year's Eve – so close to the turn of the year that the sign change happens on the evening of December 31st in the Americas but early in the wee hours of New Year's Day on the other side of the Atlantic Pond.

For another thing, Mars is one of the noteworthy features in this Full Moon chart. So, he's been making his presence known throughout December, starting with the Sun square Mars on Dec.02 and the two have travelled in orb since then.

Full Moon Tsqr Mars

By the time the Moon catches up to become Full, Mars is just over 7 degrees behind the Sun and Moon. Although a bit on the wide side, Mars is close enough to form a T-square aspect pattern with the Sun-Moon opposition. And considering that Mars grabs the spotlight on New Year's Eve, I'd say that makes it an "interesting" part of this Full Moon chart.

For now, Mars is in Pisces, a Water sign. Our Mars urge for impulse and call to action are fuelled by imagination, inspiration, intuition and emotions. Mars in Pisces can feel like you're gliding on a cloud that magically takes you to where you want to go. You get the urge to move and you move. Pisces quality of surrender can potentially dovetail nicely with Mars' impulsive nature.

The trouble is that it can also take you to where you didn't want to go. It can be tricky to tell an illusion from the real thing, so how do you know if what you're moved to do is the right thing or not? As a result, Mars in Pisces can stall and get stuck. How do you know if this is the urge to follow, or if that is the one?

It helps to be able to distinguish your spontaneous inner impulses from your projected hopes, expectations, fears, desires and longings. So, aim to shine a light of awareness into the hidden corners of your unconscious now, during this high-energy and often-stressful time of year. The perception and insight you gain can be carried with you as you leap with Mars into the New Year and developed into a valuable resource.

There are things that are so serious
that you can only joke about them.
~ Werner Heisenberg

The Full Moon is in Cancer and the Moon is especially strong there because it is in its own sign, being the planetary ruler of Cancer. A Cancer Full Moon is a double-dose of Cancer/Moon energy. Cancer and the Moon are all about nurturing, feelings, intuition and sensitivity. If that sounds a little like Pisces, that's because both are Water signs.

To top it off, this is a zero-degree Full Moon – the second in a rare series of 5 in a row, from November through March (FM in Gemini to FM in Libra). The first degree of a sign (0:00 to 0:59) releases extra pure, intense energy. Like a Big Bang, it needs to be harnessed, developed, organized and channelled into something constructive—which is what the journey through that sign is all about.

So, don't be surprised if you're feeling a bit more emotional than usual over the holidays. Or sensitive, or empathic, or in need of human connection through nurturing or bonding. Christmas and other religious or secular holiday celebrations at this time of year are usually times when families aim to get together. And family is a primary theme for Cancer and the Moon. With such a strong lunar energy happening just 3 days before Christmas, and the day after Solstice/Yule, it is bound to add some extra seasoning to the celebrations.

So, here is the recipe for the multi-flavoured holiday fruitcake that the sky is gifting us with.

Sun conjunct Saturn, opposite Moon

The Sun is closing in on a conjunction to Saturn (Jan.02) and is now about 9½ degrees off—just enough to include this combination in the Full Moon formula. The Moon, of course, is opposite Saturn with the same orb. Saturn is a serious soul that doesn't get swept up by sentimentality or excess. He's all about structure, so he provides the basic cake that holds the other ingredients together.

Saturn can help keep you grounded during the holidays when you start to get wound up and carried away by excess. If you're tempted to overspend, Saturn can tap you on the shoulder and remind you that your credit card does have a limit that should be respected.

Saturn can be a blessing if you need a firm ally to help you draw healthy boundaries with people who may get on your nerves or with those who tempt you to act against what your Adult knows is your best interest. When you're subjected to high pressure advertising, flashing lights and consumer overwhelm, Saturn can be your best friend.

Wedge aspect pattern - Sun, Moon, Uranus

On the other hand, Saturn's seriousness and down-to-earth nature can itself become excessive, tipping the scales toward depression, pessimism or cynicism.

If you are prone these states of mind, Uranus might be a better ally for you. Uranus is like the crunchy bits in a recipe that add some excitement, but be careful you don't bite down so hard that you metaphorically break a tooth! Take some time to chew and digest your excitement before taking another bite.

Uranus is sextile the Moon and trine the Sun (60° and 120°, respectively), forming a Wedge aspect pattern. This offers a remedy for Saturn suffocation along the lines of doing something spontaneous, unusual or out-of-character. Just don't jeopardize your safety or others' in the process.

The thing to watch out for, with Uranus on friendly terms with the Sun and Moon, is that it could also make it easier to succumb to temptations, like impulse buying, getting behind the wheel of the car after drinking or drugging, or possibly even getting snagged by scammers via phishing email, phone spam and other nefarious traps. So, while you're trying to wriggle out of Saturn's snare, stay on good terms with him and listen when he says, "You know, you REALLY shouldn't do that..."

One should always be drunk. That's all that matters...
But with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtue,
as you chose. But get drunk.
~ Charles Baudelaire

Mercury and Jupiter are tightly conjunct in Jupiter's home sign of Sagittarius, and both are square to Neptune (90°), also in its home sign. Mercury keeps our holiday fruitcake from getting too heavy by whipping some Air into it. Jupiter adds a jolly variety of mixed fruits and nuts, expanding the size of the cake (and possibly your waistline). Neptune, naturally, has to be the brandy that soaks the cake with a sharp sweetness that lets you enjoy it even if you don't like fruitcake.

Mercury cnj Jupiter, sqr Neptune

The Jupiter-Neptune square is like the Battle of the Titans, with two powerful, strong energies arguing over which one is the more evolved, virtuous planet. We will be working with the Jupiter-Neptune energy throughout 2019 (exact on Jan.13, Jun.16 and Sep.21), so this Full Moon gives us a peek at what is to come.

Jupiter says, "I am the passionate King of the Gods who commands the height of Mt. Olympus," while Neptune says, "I reign over the deepest deep of the oceans and the darkest unknown realms, right down into the Source of Being."

This contest is, of course, being waged inside each of us and gets expressed on the outside through events, movements, aspirations and insights, especially on the Collective level. Do we follow the morals, principles, wisdom and philosophical doctrines of Jupiter and Sagittarius? Or do we reach out for our own raw experience of the mysteries behind the translucent veil between the physical and metaphysical worlds of Neptune and Pisces? Is it possible to do both?

Mercury has been conversing with both Jupiter and Neptune since late October. Mercury squared Neptune when he went retrograde (Nov.16) and was conjunct Jupiter when he turned direct (Dec.06). Mercury has the last word with Neptune as he passes the final square when he leaves the retrograde shadow on Dec.24.

So, our Mercury awareness, thoughts, ideas and imagination have already been tuning in to the upcoming Jupiter-Neptune square. Think of these past few months as the trailer video showing you a bit of what's to come over the next year, particularly in the exploration of spirituality, faith, philosophy, and The Meaning of Life.

As an example: it might be better to keep your focus on how to apply your high aspirations and visions in a way that will motivate, stimulate and enlighten you consciously, rather than assuming you can just coast while Neptune magically points you in the right direction. Neptune might oblige, of course, but it could also lead you to someplace you hadn't intended to go and later wish you hadn't.

Jupiter is about faith, but it's also about making the choice to have faith based on your understanding of the possibilities. Neptune is, almost by definition, largely beyond your conscious control, and it therefore tends to be harder to steer through Neptune's ambiguous currents. Your mental focus may find it can navigate Jupiter's fire-walk more effectively than floating downstream on Neptune's lily pad.

On the other hand, the Jupiter part of us can get too stuck in dogma and doctrine, insisting that everyone must follow the same path that works best for ourselves. So, Neptune's softly blurred vision on life could help us let go of an overzealous need to be right enough to become more open to the Universe that lies beyond what we believe we know.

I wanted to punch him and
understand him at the same time.
~ Shannon A. Thompson, Take Me Tomorrow

Chiron is conjunct Mars and also T-squares the Sun-Moon axis. Chiron adds a dash of bitters to our recipe – a healing tonic effect for the stomach, but needs to be balanced by the other flavours so that it doesn't overpower. Chiron's contribution also ensures our fruitcake doesn't become overwhelmingly sweet.

Full Moon Tsqr Mars

Astrologically, Chiron indicates that there is a benefit to letting yourself feel any sadness or disappointment that might come up over the holidays. This time of year applies enormous pressure to constantly feel joyous, happy, grateful, uplifted, hopeful and open-hearted. But it's natural for us to sometimes experience sadness, grief, cynicism, frustration, and other so-called negative feelings. If we always push these away when they come up, it adds to the pressure. Neither is it good to drown in the down, but it can be equally detrimental to become blinded by the light of the up.

Therefore, as Mars approaches the conjunction with Chiron (exact on Dec.29), it may be healthier to acknowledge your anger, temper, irritation, frustration or just plain "Bah Humbug" grumpiness. Find a safe place to vent and express whatever you're feeling, preferably that doesn't involve damaging your surroundings or burning bridges with others. (Even if you need to draw a firmer boundary with someone, it's better to do that from a more grounded frame of mind than to blast your connection to them with dynamite.)

This dynamic between Mars and Chiron – breaking free versus staying in the struggle; pushing back versus adapting, reacting versus surrendering – is a central challenge in the Cancer Full Moon. The best way to negotiate this thorny landscape is with mindfulness, awareness, balance, and with a wide-angle view of the implications, benefits and drawbacks.

It will also help to find a constructive outlet for Mars energy. Take a walk. Get some exercise. Dance it out. Stretch and move your body. Regularly.

I think... if it is true that there are as many minds as there are heads,
then there are as many kinds of love as there are hearts.
~ Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

Venus trine Neptune

Further to the need to find balance between the "positive" and "negative" feelings of this time, is Venus in Scorpio. While in Scorpio, the sweet, lovely Venus can, at her best, become seductive, alluring, sensual and capable of deeply enjoying all the pleasures that the season has to offer. On the other hand, Venus can also become a jealous, possessive bitch who is determined to have control over everything and everyone around her. Which Venus will you encounter? Possibly both at different times, depending on the circumstances.

Venus has an ally in Neptune through a trine aspect (120°), which can open up hearts, minds and desires to wonderful experiences. Find some beautiful music to enjoy. Be sensually creative – cook, bake, indulge in luscious aromas, put pretty lights and decorations around your home, light some candles. Anything that relaxes your body and mind. Take a deep breath and sigh deeply in pleasure and enjoyment.

It's possible to want to use all those goodies as an escape from those "negative" feelings or emotional overwhelm. Remember, it's all about balance and boundaries, learning how to say no when you know something is not in your best interest, and giving yourself permission to say yes because you know it's okay to feel good.

Hard Wedge figure - FM and Venus

Be careful about overindulging though. Venus also forms a Hard Wedge to the Sun-Moon axis, through a semi-square to the Sun and sesqui-quadrate to the Moon (45° and 135°, respectively). The trouble is that there's pleasure as in feeling good and then there's pleasure as in hedonism, and a Scorpio Venus could potentially become obsessed with it. Hedonism can be fun, but when it becomes a steady diet, you risk creating more problems than are worth it.

Thankfully, Venus is in a supportive sextile with both Saturn and Pluto (60°). This can help to stabilize the temptation for hedonism, and makes it easier to channel Venus' desire for passion and pleasure into inner strength that can balance out the difficult stuff.

Do not give way to useless alarm; though it is right to be prepared for the worst,
there is no occasion to look on it as certain.
~ Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Dec.24 – Mercury leaves the Shadow (13:29 of Sagittarius; Next shadow begins Feb.19.2019)  ("What's the Shadow?"  Read my articles about Retrograde Cycles.  Read my article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury finally leaves the shadow—the part of the zodiac where it was retrograde. This means the confusion, delays and miscommunications of the last 2 months have mostly dissipated and things should be more or less back to normal (whatever that is). The difference is that you now have the benefit of seeing things from a different perspective after having reconsidered, rethought and rehashed information and perceptions over the past 2 months. This gives you more choices than you had before. In fact, you may find that although you thought something was a good idea a month or two ago, you now realize that a different approach, decision or way of understanding it is better. If you've been waiting until Mercury finished with the retrograde cycle before you made a final decision about something or taking action on something, this is the time to take another look at whatever that is. Just don't forget your common sense, and remember that Mercury is only one factor to take into consideration regarding the timing of a decision. Use your best judgment and wisdom.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):

Dec.24 – Mercury square Neptune (13:57 of Sagittarius/Pisces)  (Dec.25 in UK, AU)

Your mental focus may be a bit clouded, confused or lethargic right now, as your conscious mind struggles to grasp the formless, limitless expanse of the Universe and the unconscious. You may experience some disillusionment or disappointment, in your observations or communication with others. However, what is flowing under the surface of events right now is the need to dissolve away the crust of old expectations that blocks your view from seeing a greater Truth. If you're feeling off-balance, try to listen more than you talk, so that you can be receptive to your inner sensitivity. Left-brain analysis might be difficult to work with right now unless you balance it with a lot of right-brain intuition. You may have to let go of a rigid mindset, or give up what you think you understand about a situation in your life, in order to open yourself to a new perspective that is difficult to define but is ultimately in the best interest of your spiritual growth.

Dec.27 – Mars trine North Lunar Node (26:53 of Pisces/Cancer)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Today, and up to a few days before and after, you may find that all the lights seem to be green for you to move ahead and take action. This might be a spontaneous impulse to seize the moment, or it could be about taking the next step in a project or process that you've been planning and carefully considering. It could also be a time when your emotions are more easily expressed. There may be someone who is urging, inspiring or rousing you to take this action. It's up to you to decide if this is wise and in your best interest, and if so, the best way to make this happen.

Dec.28 – Venus sextile Pluto (20:29 of Scorpio/Capricorn)  (Dec.29 in AU)

Close one-on-one relationships with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) could possibly benefit by being taken to a deeper level now, through creatively combining balanced harmony with deep connection. Just be careful that intimacy and bonding don't go over the top into obsession or domination. There is a brief opportunity now to become more authentic in how you relate to those close to you and how you establish a balance of power with them. The trick is to do this without trying to suppress, control or overpower the other person's interests. Financially, it is a time when you may have an opportunity to profit in your dealings with banks, insurance companies, taxes, and other institutions that deal with collective money.

Dec.29 – Mars conjunct Chiron (28:04 of Pisces)  (Dec.28 in HAST, AKST, PST, MST, CST)

There is a lot of potential for both healing and harm under this transit. The forcefulness of Mars is like a surgeon's scalpel that can heal by cutting through resistance, lethargy, pain or denial – but could also be a knife that causes damage when not used with precision and care. The healing aspect of this energy can bring some relief to chronic or persistent problems, but if inflicted with anger, hostility or insensitivity it could just aggravate those problems. Physical energy could be affected by this transit, either beginning a new approach that can bring improved strength, or by depleting your energy through physical, emotional or spiritual malaise. You might feel a bit discouraged or powerless...or you might start to see a light at the end of the tunnel that you can start to move toward. This is the beginning of a new cycle of working with these combined energies, which lasts about 2 years. To participate with positive intention in this initiation, it can help to observe what conflicts, problems or struggles come up around this time, since there is something about these issues that will unfold and develop over the next two years.

Dec.31 – Mars enters Aries (until Feb.14.2019)  (Jan.01.2019 in UK, AU)

Mars is in his own sign while in Aries, which stokes the fires of passion, enthusiasm, drive, and a pioneering spirit. Assertive, decisive action can come more easily now...but then, so can anger and conflict. This is a good time to initiate new projects and activities, and move old projects forward, taking advantage of the courage and daring that is in the air now. However, the results will be better if you are able to channel this energy through a focused goal, rather than going on impulse alone. The tendency to take risks is also high right now, which can be a mixed blessing. It's best to avoid complications and problems that can arise from being reckless or irresponsible, but do use this energy to muster the courage to take pre-planned action.

Jan.02 – Sun conjunct Saturn (11:31 of Capricorn)  (Jan.01 in HAST, AKST, PST, MST, CST)

For a few days before and after this date, you may feel serious, studious, stuck, blocked, committed and/or hard working. It could be a good time to manifest well prepared plans, or you might have to get real and deal with difficult realities in new ways. You may have business with authority figures, or you might be called upon to act in a leadership role. It can also be a time to own your own authority – that is, to BE the authority figure, either to someone else or just to yourself. It might be a time of decision, when you have to choose one path or option over another. This can feel like an ending, as much as it is a new beginning, because selecting one possibility means you must let go of the other possibilities (at least for now). This is a necessary part of the process of manifestation and maturity. Doing closure on the people and situations that are passing out of your life will help to complete the process of growth and learning they have brought into your life, and can help clear the space for something new to begin growing in their place.

Jan.02 – Mercury goes Out of Bounds (from 26:01 Sagittarius to 20:58 Capricorn; OOB until Jan.18)   ("What does Out of Bounds mean?"   "What is Declination?")

Mercury goes Out of Bounds (OOB), giving us a chance to peek into ideas and observations beyond our usual thoughts, awareness and comfort zone. The "air up there" can be a bit rarefied. If you're not used to it (and even if you are), your thoughts might seem almost a bit drunk, confused, inspired or flowing so freely that it's hard to capture them clearly. If you do catch one of these thoughts clearly, remember that it's an idea, not necessarily reality, even though you could use it to create a new reality for yourself. Your mental peripheral vision can become expanded, taking in more information than usual. You may have a chance to manifest it more clearly when Mercury returns from "outer space."

Another effect that is common while Mercury is OOB is that it can feel like Mercury is retrograde, even when it's not. Weird things often happen, including confusion and things seeming to be generally out-of-synch. As with the actual Mercury retrograde, it's best to give yourself a bit more time to get to appointments, drive more carefully, double-check information and give everyone around you a bit more patience, since they're going through this too.

Like all things in astrology and life, Mercury OOB has its upside and its downside. Much depends on which thoughts you feed and what you feed them with. If you consume fear, suspicion, anger or hostility, you could find yourself feeling a bit paranoid, easily angered, or looking for ways to cheat in order to avoid anticipated negativity. On the upside, you may discover a fresh understanding about things, putting new pieces of the puzzle into place and tapping into a higher level of truth and insight. Try writing down your ideas, perceptions, thoughts and moods. After Mercury comes back down to earth, you can see how you can put those observations and ideas to good use.

Jan.03 – Mercury square Chiron (28:11 of Sagittarius/Pisces)  (Jan.04 in AU)

Your mental focus and perceptions may feel a bit strained right now. You could find yourself locked in a struggle of indecision that stems from a "glass half empty" versus "glass half full" dilemma. It may be difficult to stay objective and evenly balanced in your perspective, but by working with this you could also find a new mental focus that gives you increased clarity. It might be tempting to sink into cynicism as a way to deal with what seems like a no-win situation. On the other hand, this transit could bring your mental perspective to a kind of "healing crisis" that forces you to get a better grip on the ideas, communication and frame of mind that have been problematic for you. Instead of reaching for extremes (hoping this will clarify the path in front of you), it will help more if you can take a few steps back to allow all the conflicting and out-of-sync elements to coexist together – creative paradox. If you have been in denial about something, this could be a turning point that allows you to grapple with the complex reality of your situation.

Jan.04 – Mercury trine Uranus (28:36 of Sagittarius/Aries)  (Jan.03 in HAST, AKST, PST, MST, CST)

Unusual ideas, flashes of insight and seeing unexpected possibilities are all part of this transit. You may find it easier to be open-minded right now, especially about insights that have eluded you. Your ability to see beyond your usual horizon of perception can bring visionary brainwaves, as well as a fun sense of humour. You might be inspired to experiment with something new or do something out of character. You might have an impulse to break free of old habits or constraints. This can be a very liberating transit that opens your mind to new possibilities and ideas. However, be careful that you don't become so liberated and spontaneous that you become erratic, hyper or reckless. Words may come tumbling out of your mouth before you've had a chance to consider their wisdom, or you might find yourself talking non-stop and interrupting, creating a bit of awkwardness in those around you. On the other hand, you might also find the clarity and vision that gives you the words to speak your truth with new conviction. It's a great time to do some writing or other form of self-expression, especially if it's spontaneous or involving technology.

Jan.04 – Venus trine North Lunar Node (26:45 of Scorpio/Leo)  (Jan.03 in HAST, AKST, PST, MST)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Today, as well as up to a couple of days before and after, you may feel a bit more comfortable in your own skin and in the social world around you. In fact, interactions you have with others may prove fruitful to help you move further along your path toward whatever destination you're pointed in. You might be in a position to do this for someone else, as well. It may be a good time to spend or save money and other resources. However, it's still wise to do a reality check to make sure both side of the exchange are satisfied that you got as much as you gave.

Jan.04 – Sun sextile Neptune (14:09 of Capricorn/Pisces)  (Jan.05 in AU)

Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Although this is mostly a very positive energy, you could become so immersed in your longing for the ideal that you have trouble dealing with the less-than-ideal realities that still must be dealt with. Gaining the benefit from this transit will still require some effort. Hope, optimism and imagination are in the air, which could bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity and imagination can be very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision, and you may experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential now to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately – although this will require your cooperation to take advantage of it. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.

Jan.04 – Mercury enters Capricorn (until Jan.24)  (Jan.05 in NST, UK, AU)

Cheerful, adaptable Mercury travels through conventional, structured Capricorn, bringing out his analytical, focused side. This is a good time to plan your projects and map out a game plan to reach your goals. It is probably best to choose discipline over distraction. Communication, ideas and awareness may become serious, structured, grounded and manifest now. Just don't let them become suppressed or censored. This is a great time to do some serious planning and organizing for future projects and goals. It is also a good time for analyzing and evaluating what you have been involved with during the past year or so. What have you learned? What information has come to you that has led you into new directions? What goals have you achieved, and what goals do you want to pursue now? What plan of action is required to get you from here to there? It may be a time when you can face some hard reality and tough decisions better than you normally do. Because Mercury in Capricorn tends to be serious and factual, it may also be a time when you are more prone to depression or discouragement. It will help to schedule regular breaks in your routine to get away and plug your head into a different perspective for a while.

Jan.05 – Venus trine Chiron (28:14 of Scorpio/Pisces)  (Jan.06 in AU)

Healing and rebalancing are possible now, especially in the areas of relationships, finance, resources and values. Any problems that have persisted in these areas lately could benefit from an influx of helpful and healing resources now. Relationships and interactions of all kinds can benefit now, since it can be easier to see the beauty and value in others whom you might usually dislike or feel ill at ease with (or they with you). Negotiations and strategic efforts to resolve conflicts may go smoothly now, especially when you balance the results in everyone's interests. You may also be able to attract what you need to heal your wounds (physical, psychological, spiritual, etc.). Like it says in the "Serenity Prayer," you may now find it a bit easier to accept that which you cannot change, while finding you make progress with the things you can.
