Apr.05 – NEW MOON in ARIES (15:17 of Aries)

I am very happy to once again feature Canadian astrologer Carmen Di Luccio as our guest writer for the New Moon in Aries article. I'll be back again for the 2nd Full Moon in Libra, April 19th. In the meantime, enjoy Carmen's article for the New Moon in Aries, and my interpretations of the day-to-day transits, below. Happy New Moon! ~ Wendy

New Moon in Aries ~ Purging the Past

We are having a New Moon in Aries on April 5th, 2019 which is initiating a 29.5-day Lunar cycle and a new wave of energy for the coming month. This cycle will peak with a 2nd Full Moon in Libra on April 19th.

This New Moon occurs just over a week after Mercury ended its recent retrograde in Pisces. The weeks following a retrograde are called the 'post-shadow' period. This is when we gradually have more clarity around certain themes that have come up over the previous month (or longer) as things generally play out more smoothly and/or we can move forward with a refreshed perspective around certain issues. This concluding period of the retrograde will last until April 16th.

Aries season began on March 20th/21st; however, this New Moon helps to kickstart it even more so. Aries is the sign of self-orientation and independence. As a Fire sign ruled by Mars, it is associated with assertiveness, courage, directness, and leading. It can also be hot tempered, combative, inconsiderate, restless, overly forceful, aggressive, and impatient.

Generally this time of year people can feel more active in comparison to previous months. It can also be a time of taking action in new ways especially considering that Mercury is moving forward now. However, throughout this Aries season we still have Mercury and Venus in Pisces along with Neptune, so things can still be a bit muddled and lack direction, even though we may try to push forward in certain areas of our lives.

The dark night of the soul comes just before revelation. When everything is lost, and all seems darkness, then comes the new life and all that is needed.

New Moon Square Saturn, South Node, Pluto with Mars Sextile Chiron

New Moon square Saturn, Pluto, South Node

In the days leading up to this New Moon, Pluto began its conjunction with the South Node (along with Saturn close by) in Capricorn, which is all in a hard aspect with this New Moon (90°). Both planets are also slowing down to go retrograde later in the month.

Issues connected to the past can come up, which can trigger deep feelings, worries, fears, intensity, or even anger in some cases. We could face obstacles or perhaps issues around power in relation to this.

Mercury sextile Saturn, Pluto, South Node

Ultimately, this is a time when we may need to end, purge, or transform something that is no longer serving us. Perhaps we may be faced with some sort of death, either literally, metaphorically, or regarding some aspect of ourselves. This can be a time of needing to get real or dig deep in regard to some of our issues.

Mercury is in a harmonious aspect (sextile: 60°) with the planets/points mentioned above (Saturn, the Nodes, and Pluto), which can help us with this energy.

Mercury sextile Saturn, Pluto, South Node

Thoughts and communications can be constructive, deep, unveiling, and empowering. Considering issues of the past to help us move forward into the future can be a theme.

Mars, the ruler of this New Moon, is in a sextile aspect with Chiron, which can support taking action toward any type of healing, empowering, or asserting ourselves in an unorthodox, bridging, or holistic way. This may or may not be applied to the themes mentioned above but can be helpful regardless.

It's funny how, when things seem the darkest, moments of beauty present themselves in the most unexpected places.

New Moon and Mercury Aspecting Jupiter, Venus Conjunct Neptune

Jupiter sqr Mercury, tri New Moon

The New Moon is in a trine with Jupiter (120°) while Mercury is moving towards a square with Jupiter (90°) following the aspects mentioned above and Mercury's conjunction with Neptune (0°). Jupiter is also going retrograde on April 10th.

In the midst of all the heavy Saturn-Pluto energy, this lunar cycle still has potential for growth and expansiveness. This can be in the form of education, travel, or other explorative pursuits.

Considering all of the Pisces-Neptune energy still present, it can also be connected to spiritual beliefs and philosophies. Developments around media and marketing can also be strong this month. However, considering Jupiter's upcoming retrograde, this can also reflect an adjustment or shifts around some of these Jupiter related areas.

Venus conjunct Neptune

Venus in Pisces is moving towards a conjunction with Neptune. Social and romantic interactions can have a magical, spiritual, imaginative, compassionate, or selfless theme.

We can experience increased sensitivity or sense of oneness with others; however, there is also the potential for confusion, delusion, or deception in our relationships. This can also be a time of heightened creativity and sense of beauty. Fun and pleasure can be oriented around relaxation.

Every journey begins with the first step of articulating the intention, and then becoming the intention.
~ Bryant McGill, Voice of Reason

Making Intentions and Things to Consider

What realizations have you had in recent weeks, and how you should move forward based on those? What do you need to adjust when it comes to your beliefs and perspectives?

What aspects of your life connected to the past need to be purged or transformed? What do you need to do to be more aligned with your individual needs while still expressing compassion in your relationships?

These are just some examples of what to consider or focus your intentions on at this time; however, it is good to reflect on anything else that is coming up for you.

It is generally best to make any intentions within the first 24 hours following a New Moon. It will be occurring at 8:50am Universal Time on April 5th. You can check the New Moon time information (in the column, at right) or click here to see what time that is in your time zone.

Apr.06-May.28 – Saturn-Pluto near-conjunction (19-23 of Capricorn, 3° orb)

Saturn and Pluto are creeping closer to their conjunction that will be exact on Jan.12.2020. However, they lurk close to each other throughout this year and throughout 2020. The last Saturn-Pluto conjunction was 1982 and the next one won't be until 2053. So, this is a rare conjunction composed of some rather heavy, no-nonsense energy, and is therefore a Very Big Deal.

Saturn is our interface with the physical world. It deals with hard-edged reality. It manifests in circumstances that we may have little power over, or we are required to apply committed hard work in order to make a change.

Pluto is our encounter with deep psychological authenticity and power dynamics. We experience it through intensity, passion, obsession and the urge to control. These qualities can easily be overdone, which usually isn't healthy for ourselves or those around us. Health involves a variety of activities, interests and attention – Pluto is our capacity to stay focused without distraction, but too much of it can interfere with our psychological or physical health.

When the two combine their forces, there isn't usually a lot of wiggle room to negotiate an easier path. Saturn says if you want the results you're aiming for, you'll need to follow the steps correctly to make it happen. And Pluto says your goal and how you make it happen need to connect to who you truly are deep inside, or that personal authenticity is bound to create problems.

Saturn and Pluto have been travelling in parallel by Declination since the beginning of 2016. It's safe to say the world has been pretty intense and demanding since that parallel began. Whatever is happening in the world, and in our personal lives, has had an edge of gravity to it that we don't see very often. What we say has implications. What we do has impact. What we think frames and colours what we encounter. What we expect shapes our experience.

The parallel continues until the exact conjunction in at the start of 2020. So, the conjunction is actually a culmination of their combined parallel energies which have been with us already for over 3 years. Put another way, the long-term parallel has been a learning process that is preparing us for that culmination in about a year's time. (See the declination graph below.)

Although the exact pass isn't until next January, they remain within 8° from Jan.15.2019 to Jan.07.2021, so the Saturn-Pluto energy continues to be quite prominent for another 2 years. Meanwhile in 2019, from the beginning of April until the end of May they hover within just 3 degrees, coming as close as 2:57 apart on May.01. During this time, they both station retrograde – Pluto on Apr.24 and Saturn on Apr.29. This adds some extra intensity to the steamy cauldron – a bit bitter at first taste perhaps, but it can transform into something deep, rich and beneficial as it grows on you.

Apr.07 – Mercury Direct sextile Saturn (20:06 of Pisces/Capricorn)   (Apr.06 in HAST)

It can be easier to take a logical, practical approach to problem-solving and decisions now. It's a good time to make plans and work out the logistics of how you're going to get from "here" to "there" in pursuing your ambitions. Or, you may find it's time to bring closure to finished goals, by distilling and systemizing what you've learned in the past several months. This will probably require a bit of effort on your part to make it happen, but the opportunity is there if you choose to take it. This transit can bring mental stability and the ability to apply your mental focus in a practical and grounded way. It may be easier to see things realistically and objectively. Creative energy can become productive and rewarding, if you use it methodically or logically.

Apr.08 – Australia rolls back to Standard Time

If you live in the Australia region of the South Pacific, and if your region observes Daylight Saving Time, it's time to move your clocks one hour BACK. If you're not sure if this applies to you, check the change dates for your location on DateAndTime.com.

Apr.09 – Mercury Direct trine North Lunar Node (22:07 of Pisces/Cancer)   (Apr.10 in AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Today, and up to a couple of days before and after, things can feel like they're starting to make sense. What you read, hear and observe may seem more obvious and your ability to put this into words could flow more easily. You might identify and figure out how to utilize the tools, skills, assets and ideas that could bring you further down the road toward whatever destination you're pointed toward. However, a reality check about how wise it might be to act on these ideas and benefits is still a good idea. Write down good ideas to follow up with later.

Apr.10 – Venus conjunct Neptune (17:24 of Pisces)   (Apr.09 in HAST, AKDT, PDT)

This can be a time of romance and dreamy desire on one hand, or deceptive manipulation and self-serving negotiation on the other hand. At its best, this transit can inspire enormous creativity and healing faith in love and abundance. We can be extremely open to the loftiest possibilities of our close relationships and our ability to attract what and who we desire. However, it may not be as easy to assess these areas in light of the realities that must be dealt with in order to realise that potential. We may find it easier to have faith in the power of negotiation – that the Universe will ensure our desired outcome – but it is also easy to slide into wishful thinking that loses touch with the reality of the situation. If you are considering a major change involving income, investment, spending or resources, it is probably a good idea to do a reality check with a trusted friend or advisor. If you are starting a new relationship or negotiating changes to an existing one, it might be wise to take a long-term view to wait and see if your dreams really will come true or if your hopes are colouring your thinking a bit too much. A reality check with a trusted friend might also help with this. This transit begins a new cycle that brings these issues into our lives to explore and gradually unfolds over the next 12 months (approximately).

Apr.10 – Sun square Saturn (20:12 of Aries/Capricorn)   (Apr.09 in HAST)

It is necessary for you to come to grips with limitations, boundaries or expectations. If you have been avoiding some task or obligation, this transit might bring consequences from that avoidance or a warning of consequences to come. You might also encounter a situation that requires you to accept unwanted responsibility or restricts your freedom in some way. You might be faced with some part of your life being pruned back, either to rein in something that is out of control or to make room for new growth. This is likely to be more or less stressful depending on how comfortable you are dealing with responsibility, authority, limits and hard work. If you have a hard time with authority issues, you might find yourself in conflict with someone in authority under this transit – perhaps in part because your buttons are getting pushed. On the other hand, this could also be a time when you are challenged to take action or make a decision that involves taking on more responsibility. It is also a time when you may have to find better ways to deal with personal boundaries – accepting others' or learning to assert your own. You're bumping up against reality, so try to work constructively with it, not hurl yourself against it.

Apr.10 – Jupiter Stationary Retrograde (24:21 of Sagittarius; until Aug.11)  (Apr.11 in AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

For up to a week before and after this date (while Jupiter is moving very slowly and stopped during the station), you may experience an increase in idealism, longing or inspiration. Your opinions, beliefs and assumptions may come under question, as your understanding of life and the world around you now requires further study. While Jupiter is retrograde over the next five months, you may have to re-examine your assumptions, attitudes, biases and judgments about one or more situations. It can be a time to gather more knowledge and look at things from a different perspective, which can change your interpretation of events.

Right now at the station there is the turning point, which might inspire you to explore already-known territory in a new way, or it could disrupt your journey because your map of the territory isn't accurate or up-to-date. This especially applies to situations that have been developing in the last three months (since Jupiter entered the shadow). Allow yourself to be open to new possibilities emerging gradually out of old situations. There is a deeper understanding that can result from exploring things from a different perspective and questioning what you think you know. That which is known and familiar may seem strangely irrelevant or foreign for a while, yet will eventually become integrated and understood again after Jupiter goes direct in five months.

Apr.10 – Mercury Direct sextile Pluto (23:06 of Pisces/Capricorn)   (Apr.11 in AU)

Penetrating insights and passionate communication are possible under this transit ...although, so is speaking more forcefully than you intend to about things that require a bit of delicacy or discretion. It is also a time when your mental concentration can come together so easily that you become obsessed. You may prefer in-depth discussion to small-talk, and it might feel awkward if you aren't able to explore the depths in your interaction or communication with others. However, you likely have an increased ability to pick up on undercurrents of what's happening around you. This is also a time when you can start to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions and ways of communicating. You also have an increased ability to take thoughts, ideas and information and transform them into something healing ...or wounding. Choose your words carefully and mindfully. Writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit can help you gather the deeper qualities.

Apr.11 – Mercury-Sun Greatest Elongation as Morning Star (23:40 of Pisces/Aries)   (Apr.12 in AU)   ("What's the Shadow?"  Read my articles about Retrograde Cycles.  Read my article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury reaches its greatest elongation from the Sun today, meaning it's as far away from the Sun as it's going to get (from Earth's perspective). Mercury is the Morning Star, meaning it is visible in the Eastern sky just before sunrise, which occurs after Mercury has turned Direct and a few days before it leaves the Retrograde Shadow.

Thoughts, awareness and decision-making tend to be clearer, and your path ahead may be easier to see. It can be a good time to reflect on the information and awareness you've gathered in the last couple of months and finalize plans for how best to act on these. If you were feeling confused or frustrated during the retrograde period, things can make more sense now. Let this be a time of fresh perspective and awareness.

Apr.12 – Mercury Direct square Jupiter (24:20 of Pisces/Sagittarius)   (Apr.11 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT, CDT)

You may be seeing the weak links in your knowledge, understanding or beliefs right now. Your ideas and words might seem to fall short of what your mind envisions, or you might be unable to convince others of your point of view. As a result, it can be tempting to over-compensate with more self-confidence, faith or optimism than you actually have. Or, you might give out "too much information" by over-explaining or through nervous rambling. Alternatively, you might encounter someone else who does this and perhaps have a blaming or judgmental reaction to them. This is an opportunity to learn something about how you might jump to conclusions or blame, possibly triggered by a situation that challenges your beliefs, opinions or perspective. To learn more about this part of yourself, try taking some time to think about what is really bothering you or what you really need to say in that situation. There may be a higher truth to be found if you open your mind to something you're reluctant to acknowledge, rather than looking for a "final truth" around which to close it.

Apr.12 – Sun square North Lunar Node (22:02 of Aries/Cancer)   (Apr.11 in HAST, AKDT, PDT, MDT)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

When the Sun squares the Lunar Nodes, your sense of purpose and identity appear to be in conflict with the lessons you need to learn in life. It may feel like you're forced to take a detour around your direct route to your destination (whatever that might be). This may only be true on the surface – if you look deeper at the situation (or possibly in retrospect), you'll probably find that your sense of self is actually helped by the benefits that you are able to get on that detour, which would have missed if you hadn't been diverted from your original path.

Alternatively, you might be confronted by a conflict or stressful dilemma that you usually resist or flail against. This may be an opportunity to explore a deeper level of your experience and feelings. Perhaps there is fear or resentment or defiance behind your reaction. This is a chance to try on a different perspective and respond in a different way that can help you move through the situation instead of just being blocked by it.

When the Sun squares the Nodes it is sometimes called "Moon Wobbles," which is a bit of a misnomer. The Moon itself doesn't wobble or even necessarily interact directly with either the Nodes or the Sun. Rather, the Moon part of us (the inner, feeling, intuitive, sensitive part of us) may feel a bit "wobbly" or unsteady when the Sun squares the Nodes. The "Moon Wobble" effects are said to build and dissipate for up to 10 days before and after the Sun-Node square is exact.

Apr.12 – Venus sextile Saturn (20:16 of Pisces/Capricorn)   (Apr.13 in AU)

It is possible to find some stability in your relationships and finances under this transit, especially if you are willing to negotiate fairly and realistically. You have increased ability to be disciplined about spending and budgeting, and to invest in hard work to maximise your earnings. Your ability to grasp the solid, realistic facts will help you choose wisely in your investments of both money and your interaction with others. Commitment and structure may be easier to approach and achieve than if you take risks now. Your self-worth can benefit from this transit because you may be less inclined to give in to mood swings. On the other hand, if you are prone to depression, you might want to be careful you don't become so grounded and stable that you lose touch with your sense of hope and potential. It is a good time to make concrete progress in matters involving beauty, love, harmony and balance. Keep your pleasures simple and humble for maximum benefit.

Apr.13 – Sun square Pluto (23:07 of Aries/Capricorn)   (Apr.12 in HAST)

This can be a challenging time, when your sense of purpose, identity and direction may feel blocked, overpowered or regulated by forces beyond your control. You may find yourself confronted by difficult situations or people, requiring that you rally an unusually strong show of power to keep from feeling powerless or overwhelmed. The trick is to center yourself in empowerment rather than simple power – that means your power comes from within yourself rather than from controlling people and situations outside of yourself. You might find yourself involved in power struggles or abandonment, either in the present or stirred up from the past. You might be forced to let go of your attachment to something or someone due to circumstances beyond your control. However, this can also be a time when you reach inside yourself and find you have more strength than you thought you did. Adversity may inspire new assertiveness and purpose in you – empowerment born of conflict and struggle.

Apr.13 – Venus trine North Lunar Node (22:01 of Pisces/Cancer)   (Apr.14 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Today, as well as up to a couple of days before and after, you may feel a bit more comfortable in your own skin and in the social world around you. In fact, interactions you have with others may prove fruitful to help you move further along your path toward whatever destination you're pointed in. You might be in a position to do this for someone else, as well. It may be a good time to spend or save money and other resources. However, it's still wise to do a reality check to make sure both side of the exchange are satisfied that you got as much as you gave.

Apr.14 – Sun trine Jupiter (24:19 of Aries/Sagittarius)

This is a time when your understanding of the Big Picture and your place within it can click into place. As a result, your confidence and self-esteem can be quite high right now. Your ability to see opportunities and possibilities more clearly can produce an experience of being "lucky." Your insight into life and the world around you may be especially bright, optimistic and inspired. This is a "feel-good" transit, when your sense of self can seem to expand and become free. You may feel especially connected to spiritual energy during this time, finding new meaning in your live and the events that unfold around you. Self-confidence can run high now, and you could feel inspired to fight for justice or some cause. At the same time, there is a chance that all this self-assurance and "knowing" could go overboard into over-confidence, dogmatism or over-indulgence if it's not grounded in realism and humility. Just use your best judgment and enjoy this warm, shining energy!

Apr.14 – Venus sextile Pluto (23:07 of Pisces/Capricorn)   (Apr.15 in UK, AU)

Close one-on-one relationships with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) could possibly benefit by being taken to a deeper level now, through creatively combining balanced harmony with deep connection. Just be careful that intimacy and bonding don't go over the top into obsession or domination. There is a brief opportunity now to become more authentic in how you relate to those close to you and how you establish a balance of power with them. The trick is to do this without trying to suppress, control or overpower the other person's interests. Financially, it is a time when you may have an opportunity to profit in your dealings with banks, insurance companies, taxes, and other institutions that deal with collective money.

Apr.15 – Venus square Jupiter (24:18 of Pisces/Sagittarius)   (Apr.16 in UK, AU)

"Your eyes are bigger than your stomach" (as Mom used to say). That means you are more likely now to over-indulge, especially in the areas of relationships, spending, desires, pleasure and social contact. Your desire for fulfilment and satisfaction may exceed your resources, and you might not even realise it until the bill comes in later (probably under a Saturn transit ;-). You may also find you require more knowledge, understanding, faith, freedom or optimism than you have available, making it tempting to compensate by inflating what you really have. For example, you might want to resort to flattery, manipulation or over-optimism in an effort to make up for a lack of genuine confidence, rapport or preparation. However, this can also be a time when your creativity is running high and you are able to pull rabbits out of your hat on a moment's notice. The problem is that you could over-extend yourself by doing so.

Apr.16 – Mercury leaves the Shadow (29:38 of Pisces; next shadow begins June.20)   (Apr.17 in UK, AU)   ("What's the Shadow?"  Read my articles about Retrograde Cycles.  Read my article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury finally leaves the shadow—the part of the zodiac where it was retrograde. This means the confusion, delays and miscommunications of the last 2 months have mostly dissipated and things should be more or less back to normal (whatever that is). The difference is that you now have the benefit of seeing things from a different perspective after having reconsidered, rethought and rehashed information and perceptions over the past 2 months. This gives you more choices than you had before. In fact, you may find that although you thought something was a good idea a month or two ago, you now realize that a different approach, decision or way of understanding it is better. If you've been waiting until Mercury finished with the retrograde cycle before you made a final decision about something or taking action on something, this is the time to take another look at whatever that is. Just don't forget your common sense, and remember that Mercury is only one factor to take into consideration regarding the timing of a decision. Use your best judgment and wisdom.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):

Apr.17 – Mercury enters Aries (until May.06)   (Apr.16 in HAST, AKDT, PDT)

Directness of speech, fast perceptions and an attitude of "just do it" mark this transit. While Mercury sprints through Aries, you may feel the impulse to cut through and get to the point in conversations and other forms of communication. Body language speaks loudly now, as do actions. At its best, this transit can help words, awareness and insight to arise spontaneously, combined with the courage to express them. On the other hand, you could also say things out of anger, impatience or impulse that you later regret. It may be a time when you'd rather cut to the chase – acknowledge things and move on – rather than hang around to process the details. It's a great time to spin ideas that can be developed later. It is also a good time to think independently and follow your thoughts into new perspectives.
