Jul.02 – SOLAR ECLIPSE ~ NEW MOON in CANCER (10:37 of Cancer)

How do you take care of yourself when it feels like the Universe is stacked against you? If you're feeling like this lately, this Solar Eclipse in Cancer provides a roadmap to steer you from discouragement into strength.

And even if you're not feeling depleted, you may be facing some challenges now that require you to give some deep thought to how you can best get through the coming struggles. This Solar Eclipse offers you a guidebook outlining difficulties to watch out for and where your power lies.

Saturn opposite Solar Eclipse

The biggest indication of challenges and struggles in the eclipse chart is Saturn's opposition to the Sun and Moon (180°), amplified by the fact that they are all aligned with the Lunar Nodes.

This placement of the Sun and Moon with the Lunar Nodes is, of course, what turns a garden-variety New Moon into a Solar Eclipse. And the fact that Saturn is staring out at them across that Nodal axis means that Saturn's energy dominates the whole chart.

Cancer holds the archetype of your Inner Child, and to that part of you, Saturn is like a stern parent or guardian who is determined to teach you how to be a strong adult who can make your way in the Big People's world.

Saturn is the "tough love" planet, like the mother bird who kicks her fledglings out of the nest, and if we fall, well then we'll have to figure out how to get it right the next time. She doesn't do it out of malice but to ensure our survival.

Saturn is currently conjunct Pluto (0°, with an orb of 4:27), which gives that Saturn-Nodal-Eclipse energy an even more forceful spin. Saturn and Pluto, which travel together throughout this year and next, are ushering in some very deep-seated changes, both in the collective and individually. We are all grappling with some hard realities. We can't afford to pamper our passage through these mountains too much or we'll miss learning the lesson.

Our job is to gain a bare knuckled grasp on what is actually happening in the world around us and in the world within us. We can no longer survive by taking for granted the belief that the archetypal Mother will catch us when we fall. We must learn to fly by developing greater independence and responsibility that replaces our dependency on external protection.

That protection, while helping us feel safe, can unfortunately keep us from growing if we remain dependent on it for too long. As our world has evolved, we need to grow with it, but that becomes stagnant if we never allow ourselves to venture out of the nest. And it is crucial that we grow—and grow up—during these volatile times. Saturn and Pluto are here to remind us that it's time to take the next step.

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.
~ Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds

The growth that Life is pushing us toward may appear in unexpected, confusing, even disappointing ways. It's easy to assume that all we need to do is to take a few more steps in the same direction that we have been going. But with the Jupiter-Neptune square happening this year, we increasingly come to realize that the path we have been on has vanished or become too rocky to navigate.

The old ways are no longer the good ways, or perhaps we need to renovate and adapt them to bring them up to date with who we have become in the present. We need to find a new path, a new perspective, that can lead us in a different direction than we expected. Or, we must learn to walk the same path in a different way—more carefully and mindfully, lest we twist our proverbial ankles on the jagged terrain.

Uranus aspects

In the Solar Eclipse chart, Uranus is sextile to the Sun and Moon (60°), indicating there are unusual, unconventional or unexpected opportunities that can help us try out new ideas.
Your best way to deal with Saturn's stern challenge is not to simply do what you're told by authority figures or by following rules to the letter. Rather, you are encouraged to find your own way to make that happen, in a way that reflects who you are and what your particular needs are.

Uranus is also square to Mercury and Mars (90°), so these opportunities may come in flashes of insight, or spurts of inspiration, especially when you're immersed in something creative or fun. For example, it might come when you're listening to or singing a song, or watching a TV program or movie, or reading a book, or writing in your journal, or watching sports, or working out, or expressing anger or frustration.

When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
~ Paul Simon

Speaking of Mercury and Mars, they are still conjunct, and this adds even more heat to the mix. The risk here is that you might overdo it by being overly impulsive; for instance, speaking your mind in ways that are insensitive or careless or premature. Your self-expression may get a little too "creative" in its compulsion to say things in an inventive, fresh, dramatic way. It might be better to think for a moment about what the impact or consequences might be before you act or express your thoughts. And if you wind up putting your foot in your mouth before your brain catches up, consider adding something that could soften or explain your remarks.

Mercury is getting ready to go Retrograde (July 7-31). Mercury has been within an 8° orb of conjunction to Mars since June 8 and will continue until July 16. They had their first of 2 conjunctions back on June 18, and will cross paths again about a week after the eclipse (July 8).

Don't be surprised if you have been driven in one direction these last couple of weeks, and then you find your mental focus has changed in about a week's time. This is common when Mercury goes retrograde, but since Mercury is also intertwined with Mars, this changeability could be especially strong or impulsive.

With Mercury going retrograde, it is a time to rethink, rehash, reflect, revise, reconsider, return, reword, review or recant. With Mars involved, you may also (over)react, rebuild, reform, regress, refuse, rearrange, renovate, reclaim, recover, refuel or perhaps regret. If your stress level starts to rise, it might help to relax, remain, renew, retire, retreat or restart.

Thor's Hammer aspect pattern

Mercury and Mars are at the apex of a Thor's Hammer aspect pattern – more Mercury than Mars, but with Mars so tangled up with Mercury right now, he gets dragged into the muddle whether he wants to be or not.

This aspect pattern features the Jupiter-Neptune square (90°) that haunts our skies all throughout this year. Mercury and Mars are in sesqui-quadrate aspect to both planets (135°). This kind of aspect pattern is full of thorns, yet can also be very motivating—if only to seek relief from the prickliness of those sesqui-quadrates.

The square between Jupiter and Neptune may complicate or obscure your sense of faith, optimism and confidence in the workings of the Universe and your ability to navigate through it. Whether this appears as a religious issue or a spiritual one, or perhaps an experience that leads you to question your sense of greater purpose and your confidence that you can make it happen, this aspect is usually uncomfortable.

At worst, it could lead you down a rabbit hole into disillusionment, disappointment, discouragement or even deception. However, this can also prompt you to ask some difficult questions that will lead to greater clarity about what you truly believe and what kind of purpose you want to adopt in the world.

Mercury and Mars are confronting this Jupiter-Neptune soul-searching with recognition, perception and instinctive reaction. You are challenged to become more aware of your unconscious beliefs and assumptions, as well as your automatic biases, doubts, cynicism and pessimism.

Since Mercury and Mars are in Leo, this could reveal the idea, for example, that you believe you are entitled to live in a world that is supportive and welcoming to you, while it expels or punishes or converts those with whom you disagree. However, Jupiter and Neptune are here to tell you that everyone has their role to play in how the world unfolds, and if you harbour the belief that you carry the only valid perspective, you could find yourself in a situation where you are challenged to open your mind a bit more.

The lesson here is not that you mustn't hold a belief in what you feel is right and wrong, or that you shouldn't act on it, but rather to realize that there is a greater context within which all of it takes place. And there is a broader, deeper truth that is almost always different and subtler than you think.

Your kids require you most of all
to love them for who they are,
not to spend your whole time trying to correct them.
~ Bill Ayers

And so, we come back around to the Solar Eclipse in Cancer. A Solar Eclipse is also a New Moon, and so it represents the beginning of something new—a new impetus, a new idea, a new intuition, a new feeling. A New Moon initiates a 4-week cycle, while a Solar Eclipse kicks off a deeper process that can unfold over months or even years. This is especially so if it makes a dynamic aspect to your natal chart (conjunction, square or opposition), which could happen if you have planets or points around 5-15° of the Cardinal signs: Cancer, Capricorn, Aries or Libra.

There is a lot of larger-than-life energy flying around right now. This eclipse brings this year's two major outer planet configurations into focus, and the potential contained within it will emerge over the next few months. One is the Jupiter-Neptune square. The other is the Saturn-Pluto conjunction at the South Lunar Node, which opposes and shakes up this eclipse.

Mercury and Mars move across the Jupiter-Neptune midpoint within a couple of days before and after the Eclipse, which keeps the Thor's Hammer aspect pattern in motion. And the Sun, Moon and Venus will oppose Saturn and Pluto in the coming weeks, which keeps the Saturn-Pluto energy active.

In addition, when Mercury stations direct in a few weeks (July 31), he will be within about 2½° from opposing Pluto. And when Saturn stations direct in a couple of months (September 18), he will be about 3¼° away from opposing this Solar Eclipse point, and therefore is likely to reactivate the eclipse energy during much of September.

So how do we work with the eclipse's Cancer energy in the midst of all this potent and volatile energy? The Cancer side of us (regardless whether you have anything in Cancer in your natal chart) seeks security, safety, nurturing and belonging. These are primal instincts that are active in us right from birth. And when we feel those needs are threatened, we often react in ways that are child-like. How much we allow those reactions to make our decisions for us largely depends on how strong an Adult we have developed inside us.

When our needs are thwarted, our triggered Inner Child may yell, reject, refuse, lash out, withdraw, give up, or stubbornly sulk. On the other hand, our Adult seeks to problem-solve, negotiate, express, assert or perhaps accept the situation—ideally in ways that result in getting the Child's essential needs met without creating more problems than are solved.

The problem is that the Child in us (Moon) sometimes overpowers our Adult (Saturn), and our reactions can become amplified out of proportion to the situation. But who's to say what is out of proportion? Certainly, there are circumstances and problems that are legitimately and justifiably upsetting. Isn't an Adult version of a tantrum sometimes called for? Indeed.

And ultimately, it's up to us to decide whether the situation calls for an explosion of primal Lunar emotion or a more reserved and measured outburst by a more judicious Adult. Choosing one or the other, or a mixture of both, requires that we pause to check in with both sides of us: Moon and Saturn, Child and Adult.

Showing a lack of self-control is in the same vein granting authority to others:
"Perhaps I need someone else to control me."
~ Criss Jami, Venus in Arms

In the Solar Eclipse chart, Mars is most likely on the side of the Moon. Being at zero degrees of Fiery Leo, Mars feels a raw urge to express emotion, especially in order to get what he wants. So, your reactions might lean more toward the explosive, aggressive, spontaneous side of the Lunar Child, leaving the Saturnian Adult in you to figure out what to do with all that energy.

Thumb over garden hose

It can be tempting to want to squash that primal energy, but like putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose, it unfortunately may only make your reactions more intense. The Sun and Moon are square Chiron in the eclipse chart, so it may not be easy or very satisfying to put a boundary around your more volatile reactions without feeling like you're being censored, censured or otherwise repressed.

On the other hand, the opposition between the Sun-Moon and Saturn is looking for balance, which means finding room for both your Child and Adult in the solution. You might initially feel like your Little Kid is polarizing to authority figures who seem unfair or mean. Alternatively, you might be the authority figure who needs to say no and winds up feeling the angry push-back from someone else's Inner Kid.

Striking a balance between these two psychological energies means making sure the Saturn part of you listens to the feelings and needs of the Moon, and isn't simply saying "No, because I said so." Arbitrary rejection feels harsh to the Lunar part of us, but when we feel heard—by ourselves as well as by others—it's easier to negotiate a truce between them.

And the Moon in us needs to realize that the "No" from Saturn is intended to keep us safe, secure and supported, even if it means restricting our freedom sometimes. So, the Moon needs to be willing to listen to Saturn too, and maybe trust a bit that "No" isn't necessarily "just because" but that Saturn is probably trying to address concerns that the Moon isn't able to see.

One valuable resource in this psychological tug-of-war may be to find a more constructive channel through which to direct that Lunar energy, which gives Mars something constructive to do. Mars could take the lead in a creative project, or look for fun, entertaining things to do, which can affirm your self-confidence and identity while it redirects or distracts you from your upsets, fears, anxiety or worry. Mars could also find expressive ways to give a voice to your concerns and feelings in a way that is more likely to get the point across to whoever you're trying to reach.

This Solar Eclipse is here to encourage you to become more proactive and aware of how you try to get your needs met and how you parent yourself. Which is usually stronger in you – the Moon-child or the Saturn-adult? Is the other side of you feeling frustrated or pushed aside or squelched into the background? Are the Child and Adult in you able to dialogue together to bridge the gap between them? It won't always have the ideal result you want, but it's still possible to make progress in getting these polarized parts of you to work in sync.

And by learning to respond more consciously to your needs, moods and reactions, you can start to see the Universe differently—not so much that things are happening TO you, but how you can and are responding to what happens.

Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness;
but direct them to it by what amuses their minds,
so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy
the peculiar bent of the genius of each.
~ Plato

Jul.03 – Venus enters Cancer (until Jul.27)  (Jul.04 in AU)

Your focus in relationships may shift for a while to family, loved ones and people in your support system. You may also find that your interactions with others takes on a quality that echoes the past, perhaps childhood, and you want to reach out to connect with others more than usual – or to avoid it if those echoes are not pleasant ones. You could be especially sensitive to getting your emotional needs met, or how others want their needs to be met. Interactions with others may bring up a deep need to belong and to connect and bond with others on a personal level. The need to feel secure and safe could come up in a variety of forms now – either directly as a feeling of vulnerability, or indirectly disguised as defensiveness or manipulation. This could also a time when you want to be somewhat protective and cautious in your handling of money, possessions and other resources, striving to conserve and cultivate these areas in order to nurture them for future growth.

Jul.04 – Saturn conjunct South Lunar Node (17:36 of Capricorn)  (Jul.05 in AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Saturn is opposite the North Lunar Node and therefore conjunct the South Node. There is something you need to let go of. Perhaps something must end, or you may need to detach yourself from something or someone. Saturn could be like a stop-sign saying, "You can't get there from here," leading you to pull back, regroup and reassess. Or, there's a lesson to be learned by facing, confronting or dealing with a difficult situation that leaves little room for compromise. You might find it's the right time to reorganize or restructure in some way, allowing you to find a better way forward. Or it might be time to take a situation you've been struggling with, and change its priority in your life; you could move it into the background so that room is made for something else to step into the foreground of your life, making more effective use of your time and energy.

Saturn conjunct the South Lunar Node last occurred in 2007, and the next occurrence after this year will be 2030/31.

Jul.07 – Mercury Stationary Retrograde (04:27 of Leo; retrograde until Jul.31)   (Jul.08 in UK, AU)   ("What's a Station?"   "What does Retrograde mean?"   Read more about Mercury Retrograde.   Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Yes, it's that time again! Mercury goes retrograde for the next 3+ weeks. For up to a week before and after today, Mercury is moving very slowly or stopped (hence "stationary" or "making a station"). During this time, you may experience intensity, frustration, confusion, miscommunications, or feel like you're getting bogging down in your progress.

Mercury retrograde is usually a time when it is a good time to rethink, rehash, reflect, and tie up old loose ends, rather than begin new ventures. It is typical for new insights and information to emerge later in the retrograde cycle that you didn't anticipate, which can change the whole picture. Because of this, it is usually advised to avoid making final or permanent decisions (e.g., signing contracts or putting new projects into action), during the retrograde and even up to 2 weeks after Mercury goes direct. However, it is an excellent time to do fact-finding, research and investigation to prepare for major decisions, which are usually best put off until well after Mercury goes direct.

In the meantime, while Mercury is retrograde, expect the unexpected, and leave lots of extra time when planning your schedule (to minimize any disruptions from delays and complications). Stay flexible and learn to roll with the weirdness. It's common to have to reschedule appointments or redo things because the instructions or information got messed up the first time. Do some things that use your intuitive, creative, non-rational mind for a while until Mercury goes direct again.

If you absolutely must do something important during this time that can't be postponed, don't be surprised if you wind up having to redo things. It can help to be especially vigilant about triple-checking what you do, but some of these mishaps can't always be predicted or prevented, so don't be hard on yourself (nor on others).

Remember: Mercury loves to play practical jokes. This is his playtime. ;-) It helps to learn to laugh with him.

Here are the key dates of the current Mercury cycle (using North American Eastern Time):

Jul.08 – Venus square Chiron (05:56 of Cancer/Aries)

You may be forced to make adjustments to relationships and/or finances now, as you face situations in these areas that just don't want to balance out the way you want them to. You may feel a bit like you're in a catch-22 (no-win situation), where the more you try to find balance and harmony, the more you feel like you're chasing your own tail around in circles. This is a time when healing in relationships and financial problems may be difficult to obtain. Harmony in these areas can seem impossible or blocked, yet it is still necessary to keep trying. By trying anyway, it may be possible to find a solution that meets your needs, even if it may not be what you wanted, hoped for or expected. Strive to find a creative solution that draws on your best side.

Jul.08 – Venus sextile Uranus (06:08 of Cancer/Taurus)  (Jul.09 in AU)

Relationships, finances, resources and pleasures could benefit from spontaneously trying a completely different approach. If these areas of your life have been getting a little stale or too routine, this transit could shake things up a little...just enough to make things interesting and breathe some fresh air into your familiar routine. Unexpected income could come your way, or you might discover something you just can't resist buying, or you might have an opportunity to make new social connections. The upside of this transit is that it's possible to break free of old habits and enjoy spontaneous interaction. The downside could come in the form of impulse purchases that are beyond your budget, or behaving a bit recklessly or making snap decisions that you can't live with later. This energy is best used to break free of what restricts you, without shattering the foundation you're standing on.

Jul.08 – Mercury Retrograde conjunct Mars (04:25 of Leo)  (Jul.09 in AU)

Spontaneous or impulsive words may come flying out of your mouth under this transit! If you've been struggling to keep opinions or observations to yourself, you might find it hard to keep them quiet, especially if you feel strongly about the situation. You might see things as more "cut and dried" than usual. Although you might feel frustrated if things don't happen in a direct, quick, straightforward way, it can also be a good time to make decisions and move forward with plans. On one hand, this can have a positive effect because it can give you courage to speak your mind and assert yourself candidly and honestly. On the other hand, you might also come across as abrupt, cranky, argumentative or even downright hostile, especially if you've been stuffing down anger or resentment for a while. This transit represents a new beginning in how you can handle self-assertiveness, communication and decision-making. By "listening to" your impulses, passions and urge to speak your truth, you can get an idea how your "inner voice" wants to emerge – and how to do that without annihilating the other person. ;-)

Jul.08 – Chiron Stationary Retrograde (05:56 of Aries; until Dec.12)   (Jul.09 in UK, AU)   ("What's a Station?"   "What does Retrograde mean?"   Read more about Retrograde planets.)

The retrograde station can be felt for up to a week before and after this date. Since Chiron is often about health, you may find health issues coming to the foreground now. General issues about wounding, healing and hurt—physically, psychologically and/or spiritually—may come to a turning point now, making it necessary to take some time for healing, reconstruction, and reconciliation of the energies that are out of balance in your life. The retrograde station (now) begins this process, which gradually unfolds over the next 5 months. Focus your energies on acknowledging the areas that need healing in your life—literally or figuratively. Don't forget that although there are areas that still need healing, you have made progress on much of this in the past. It's important to balance your acknowledgement of the work yet to be done with recognition of what you have already achieved in the past.

Jul.09 – Sun opposite Saturn (17:12 of Cancer/Capricorn)

You may be obligated to fulfil the expectations of others or of society under this transit. A situation or project (which may have begun around 6 months ago) might require that you start to implement the plans and preparation you've been building. Or you might find that problems you've been putting off must now be dealt with. Although you could experience this as stressful or heavy, it can also be a time when you are finally able to move ahead with a project or goal. All commitment requires some degree of limitation and pruning back, since we must choose one path and leave other options behind. This may therefore feel like a time when you are pressured by obligation, necessity or restraint...or it could feel like the rehearsals are finally over and it's time to launch the rocket. If it seems like you're only seeing blocks or obstacles in your way, this might be a reflection of not having done enough preparation (in which case you will need to draw on your experience to solve the problems or deal with the reality in front of you). This can be a time when you reap whatever you have sown in the past (especially the last 6 months), so if your current situation seems negative or punitive, it might be a time when you need to look back over your actions that lead to this and be accountable for past actions and decisions. Whether you are taking the final step to implement your plans or are facing the results of poor past judgment, this can be a time when you are called upon to move forward in your personal growth and maturation. Use it to strengthen your responsibility (response-ability), and don't let fears of inadequacy erode your self-esteem.

Jul.09 – Sun conjunct North Lunar Node (17:37 of Cancer)  (Jul.10 in ADT, NDT, UK, AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

For a few days before and after this date, your sense of self and purpose are in sharper focus. You might encounter people who understand you more than usual, or you could find the courage to shine a little brighter than you normally do. However, this also brings a challenge to find and fulfil your potential within a broader context of life, friends, associates, groups and the world. It is a good time to look at your vision of the future—on a personal level but especially the wider vision you have for the world around you. What is your greatest potential over the coming year? Ten years? The New and Full Moons just before and after this transit are usually Eclipses. Check to see if those Eclipses form major aspects to your natal chart, since these will show a future direction for you over the coming months. The Sun-Node transit happening right now will help to focus those changes.

Jul.11 – Sun trine Neptune (18:37 of Cancer/Pisces)  (Jul.10 in HST, AKDT, PDT, MDT, CDT)

Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Hope, optimism and imagination spring eternal right now, which can bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity can become very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision. And you experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.

Jul.11 – Mars trine Chiron (05:56 of Leo/Aries)  (Jul.10 in HST, AKDT)

The healing of assertive energy and willpower mark this transit. It is bound to be easier to get past any inhibition you might normally feel about being assertive, expressing frustration and anger, and putting things into action. Perhaps you are able to reconcile some internal guilt or fear that has held you back in the past. Or, maybe you are finally able to reach a state of acceptance or resolution that allows you to move beyond a conflict or struggle that has been keeping you stuck. Applying your willpower to problems has a better chance of succeeding now because you're likely to be more attuned to the path that leads to peace rather than more conflict. It's possible you might choose to use this energy in the defence of another person, a cause or something else you feel passionately about. It's possible to focus your energy, intent, motives and actions in ways that are healing, healthy, balanced and constructive.

Jul.11 – Mars square Uranus (06:12 of Leo/Taurus)  (Jul.12 in AU)

Erratic action and unpredictable impulses can surface under this transit. Active energy is more available now, but it can be very hard to control its direction, speed, intensity or predictability. Under this volatile atmosphere, unconscious or suppressed emotions (like anger, frustration, fear or desire) can jump out when you least expect them. Being accident prone is not uncommon. This can be great if you're trying to release inhibitions, find courage to sprint forward or break out of an old habit. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that your actions won't turn out to be destructive, counter-productive or too much of a good thing. You might be tempted to take greater risks than is wise, but this risk-taking impulse can also break you out of a rut too. It's important to use your best judgment when faced with this kind of potent yet volatile energy.

Jul.14 – Sun opposite Pluto (21:53 of Cancer/Capricorn)

Who owns the power? This is a time when you may be called upon to stand up to a situation or person who pressures you to dance to their tune instead of your own. This is a chance to assert and empower yourself in new ways, putting into practice the inner strength you've developed in the last 6 months. The trick is to face the situation or person while rooted in inner honesty and authenticity, rather than trying to annihilate the enemy using overkill. Strive to negotiate (or struggle) together using just enough force to establish a workable balance of power, without either of you being nuked in the process. Also, be open to the possibility that your "opponent" might be holding up a mirror, which is showing you something about yourself that you may not want to acknowledge. That doesn't necessarily make your opponent right and you wrong, but there might be something for you to learn from the situation. If you are in a situation that doesn't involve an "opponent" as such, there may still be an aspect of your environment that is holding up a difficult mirror, requiring you to find a more centred and authentic point of inner power. It is by finding new balance within this kind of dynamic, whatever the circumstances, that transformation can be found.
