Greetings for the New Moon in Virgo! With all these planets in Virgo right now, my schedule got away from me! So, I'm treating you to the words and wisdom of Leah Whitehorse for the New Moon in Virgo article. And as usual, my own day-to-day transits follow her article, along with my own take on the Sabian Symbol for the New Moon. I promise I'll be back again for the Full Moon in Pisces (in fact, it's already half written). In the meantime, Leah will guide you expertly through the Virgo maze. Enjoy! And Happy Transits! ~ Wendy

Four days ago, the asteroid Pallas Athena entered Scorpio, leaving us with airless skies. In the absence of the Air element (no planets in Gemini, Libra or Aquarius), we are left with a powerful Earth overtone as we have ten planets and asteroids in Earth signs – Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn, Uranus and Vesta in Taurus and (take a deep breath), the Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Juno all in Virgo.

This six-point Stellium ("What's a Stellium?") at the beginning of this lunar cycle puts us on notice that new starts are characterised by practical effort. Whilst Jupiter and Neptune are still in a nebulous square to one another (90°), we must get our heads out of the clouds if we want to improve our circumstances.

I am of certain convinced that the greatest heroes are those who do their duty in the daily grind of domestic affairs whilst the world whirls as a maddening dreidel.
~ Florence Nightingale

Virgo energy is no-nonsense, fastidious and pragmatic. Our lives are put under the microscope as we’re pushed to figure out what’s working and what isn’t. We need to clean up our act, figure out a better way, make our schedule ship shape, heal dis-ease.

I’ve found myself trawling through bullet journal videos and throwing myself out of bed at 6 a.m. every morning to get a head start on the day. Mars in Virgo alone is determined to catch that worm.

The Moon in Virgo finds emotional satisfaction in helping others. The Sun in Virgo illuminates our physical body and asks us to pay attention to its health and functioning.

Mercury in Virgo is efficient in its home sign, breaks things down into a sum of parts, analyses and categorises. Venus in Virgo finds pleasure in being of service and a job well done. Love is a verb with this placement.

Mars in Virgo spends its energies at the office and is focused on doing a good job. Also, it could be said that Mars in Virgo turns into Mr. Fix-It given this planets association with tools. Juno in Virgo can be picky with partners and contracts, but is also willing to put the work in where necessary.

If you want something new,
you have to stop doing something old.
~ Peter Drucker

All the Virgo planets create a trine to Uranus (120°). Normally I use smaller orbs for asteroids but as Juno is part of the Virgo crowd, I have included it here. With the Uranus influence, the urge is to innovate, shake things up, create change, experiment. Generally, Virgo prefers to follow a plan, but Uranus introduces a willingness to improvise, something that adaptable Virgo is very good at doing, even if it makes her flustered!

Virgo planets trine Uranus and Saturn

Uranus in Taurus is already telling us that some part of our lives has become too staid, too sedate. We need to pick up the pace and venture off track. Any new start made around this time, is imbued with the spirit of enterprise. Got a crazy idea? All this Virgo energy will help you figure out whether it will work in practice.

Even more helpful is that the New Moon, Venus and Mars are in a wide trine to aged Saturn in Capricorn. So, we’re looking at making improvements that have long-term benefits. This aspect also mitigates any instability that Uranus could generate, giving us a reality check when ideas become too far-fetched. These aspect patterns also suggest that this is the perfect time to put new skills into practice, test new methods, merge old and new.

Considering the proximity of all the planets in Virgo, we could also say that there is an undertone of "many hands make light work" in this New Moon story. The Sabian symbol of the New Moon is "A Harem." A harem is an example of people, in this case specifically women, living and working together.

For the harem to function, everyone has a role so there’s a natural established order. It’s about bringing out the best in one another rather than jostling for position and prominence. Focus on what you do well. Defer to others when different skills are required. Be willing to learn. Virgo is the sign of an apprentice.

The role of genius is not to complicate the simple,
but to simplify the complicated.
~ Criss Jami, Killosophy

New Moon quincunx Chiron

The only fly in the ointment is a quincunx to the New Moon from Chiron in Aries (150°). Its prickling pain could irritate perfectionists and stimulate pedantry. The heavy focus on Virgo energy imbues us with a whole lot of "I must get it right this time."

We need to take care that we don’t become overly critical just because we haven’t fully healed, integrated or understood. Leave room for snagging, little blips in energy or concentration, correcting small errors– in short, we need to accept that we’re human. We could use this energy to remind us to be kind, because in one way or another, we are all hurting. We don’t need to go for "perfect" – we just need to aim to do our best.

Purify, clean, analyse, adapt. Declutter. Organise. Streamline. Be flexible. Eat right for your body. Exercise. Hold a healthy mindset. Cleanse your crystals. Practice reiki. Fold your clothes and smooth your sheets.

Keep in mind this quote from Martha Beck:

The way we do anything is the way we do everything.
~ Martha Beck, The Labyrinth of Life

Sep.01 – Mercury trine Uranus (06:26 of Virgo/Taurus)  (Sep.02 in AU)

Unusual ideas, flashes of insight and seeing unexpected possibilities are all part of this transit. You may find it easier to be open-minded right now, especially about insights that have eluded you. Your ability to see beyond your usual horizon of perception can bring visionary brainwaves, as well as a fun sense of humour. You might be inspired to experiment with something new or do something out of character. You might have an impulse to break free of old habits or constraints. This can be a very liberating transit that opens your mind to new possibilities and ideas. However, be careful that you don't become so liberated and spontaneous that you become erratic, hyper or reckless. Words may come tumbling out of your mouth before you've had a chance to consider their wisdom, or you might find yourself talking non-stop and interrupting, creating a bit of awkwardness in those around you. On the other hand, you might also find the clarity and vision that gives you the words to speak your truth with new conviction. It's a great time to do some writing or other form of self-expression, especially if it's spontaneous or involving technology.

Sep.01 – Venus trine Saturn (14:07 of Virgo/Capricorn)  (Sep.02 in AU)

Stability in relationships and finances characterises this transit. You have increased ability to be disciplined about spending and to invest the hard work to maximise your earnings. Your ability to grasp the solid, realistic facts will help you choose wisely in your investments of both money and interaction with others. Commitment and structure are easier to achieve and embrace than change or taking risks. Self-worth can benefit now because you are less inclined to give in to mood swings. However, if you are prone to depression, you might want to be careful you don't become so grounded and stable that you lose touch with your sense of hope and potential. It is a good time to make concrete progress in matters involving beauty, love, harmony and balance. Keep your pleasures simple and humble for maximum benefit.

Sep.02 – Sun conjunct Mars (09:41 of Virgo)

This transit gives you energy to burn! However, that energy could be productive or volatile, or even both. You are likely to be a lot more motivated and enthusiastic about whatever you do. But you could also be more impulsive, distracted and erratic too. Anger can flare quickly, and if you don't try to control it or hang onto it, it can pass just as quickly. Sexual energy or desire may be high now, which can be fun to take advantage of, but could also get you into trouble if you don't use some good judgment about who, when or where to act on that desire. This transit represents a new beginning in how you use and work with your energy – physical, emotional, spiritual and motivational energy. It can be a great time to initiate new goals, or to set plans into motion. It may be easier to stand up for what you believe – to assert yourself, to confront someone or to express yourself in ways that you had previously been inhibited. It takes practice and awareness to learn to tell your genuine impulses (that reflect and express who you are) from unconscious motives (that may be passive-aggressive, manipulative or hostile). This transit could give you an opportunity to observe both sides of this potent energy.

Sep.02 – Venus square Jupiter (15:14 of Virgo/Sagittarius)  (Sep.03 in AU)

"Your eyes are bigger than your stomach" (as Mom used to say). That means you are more likely now to over-indulge, especially in the areas of relationships, spending, desires, pleasure and social contact. Your desire for fulfilment and satisfaction may exceed your resources, and you might not even realise it until the bill comes in later (probably under a Saturn transit ;-). You may also find you require more knowledge, understanding, faith, freedom or optimism than you have available, making it tempting to compensate by inflating what you really have. For example, you might want to resort to flattery, manipulation or over-optimism in an effort to make up for a lack of genuine confidence, rapport or preparation. However, this can also be a time when your creativity is running high and you are able to pull rabbits out of your hat on a moment's notice. The problem is that you could over-extend yourself by doing so.

Sep.03 – Venus sextile North Lunar Node (16:03 of Virgo10/Cancer)  (Sep.02 in HST)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Your charisma and charm shine a little brighter during this transit. You may be more receptive to what others have to offer, or you might feel more generous with those around you. You could find just the right thingamajig to buy, or you may discover resources you didn't realize you had. It can be a good time to socialize, go on a date, schmooze strategically with people or negotiate an agreement. Aim for a balance of give-and-take in a way that benefits all concerned. Just be careful not to become so seductive that you persuade someone to do your bidding when it's not in their—or your—best interests.

Sep.03 – Mercury conjunct Mars (10:27 of Virgo)  (Sep.04 in AU)

Spontaneous or impulsive words may come flying out of your mouth under this transit! If you've been struggling to keep opinions or observations to yourself, you might find it hard to keep them quiet, especially if you feel strongly about the situation. You might see things as more "cut and dried" than usual. Although you might feel frustrated if things don't happen in a direct, quick, straightforward way, it can also be a good time to make decisions and move forward with plans. On one hand, this can have a positive effect because it can give you courage to speak your mind and assert yourself candidly and honestly. On the other hand, you might also come across as abrupt, cranky, argumentative or even downright hostile, especially if you've been stuffing down anger or resentment for a while. This transit represents a new beginning in how you can handle self-assertiveness, communication and decision-making. By "listening to" your impulses, passions and urge to speak your truth, you can get an idea how your "inner voice" wants to emerge – and how to do that without annihilating the other person. ;-)

Sep.03 – Sun conjunct Mercury (11:15 of Virgo)  (Sep.04 in UK, AU)

During this transit, your sense of self and purpose can become merged with what you think, perceive and say. On one hand, this can make for an easy flow of ideas and communication from inside your brain to the external world. It can also increase your perceptions and observations of the world, as you file it all away in your internal database. On the other hand, you may find yourself a bit tongue-tied, as it could be hard to separate your sense of self from your perceptions and ideas enough to find the words to adequately express them. In that case, just observe and go with the flow; the words will come later. It can also be a time when it's not easy to be objective, especially about yourself and how you bring yourself to the world around you. It's like your Being automatically expresses and sets into motion the things you think, perceive and want to say. This can help you to feel like your sense of self is shining effortlessly, but if your thoughts and perceptions are in conflict with other parts of you (e.g., emotions, needs, objectivity) then it might become a time when you act a little too quickly with blinders on. Strive for balance and self-honesty before you act.

The peak period of Mercury conjunct the Sun is when they are within 17 minutes of arc (or some say within 1 degree), which lasts roughly 14-20 hours when Mercury is direct, or 5-8 hours when retrograde. This is called being Cazimi, meaning "in the heart of the Sun." When any planet is Cazimi, it is said to be unusually strong – being in the eye of the storm, so to speak – and can potentially be used to great advantage (for better or worse).

In the case of Mercury, your perceptions, awareness, ideas, and ability to put your thoughts into words may have a strong impact, being unusually clear, focused or direct. It is recommended that you use wisdom and good judgment, since an extra sharp wit during this time could possibly have negative consequences, intended or not.

Sep.04 – Venus opposite Neptune (17:28 of Virgo/Pisces)

Romance, idealism, fantasy and imagination are blossoming into a bright aura right now, which is likely to influence your relationships, interactions, finances and values – for better or for worse! Compassion, caring and selfless giving can be good ideals to aim for, as long as you remember that ideals tend to lose some of their shiny glow when they're translated into hard reality. If you forget this, the end result may be disappointing or disillusioning. Disappointment may also indicate that there have been hidden hopes or high expectations that no one can really live up to. Aim to balance your innocence and longing with the judgement of your older, wiser, mature self; and do a reality check with a trusted friend or adviser if in doubt. That said, this can also be a very creative and inspiring time – just remember to keep one foot on the ground.

Sep.05 – Mercury trine Saturn (14:02 of Virgo/Capricorn)

It can be easier to take a logical, practical approach to problem-solving and pursuit of your goals now. Your mental outlook is likely to be calm and grounded. This is a good time to make plans and work out the logistics of how you're going to get from "here" to "there" in pursuing your goals. You may find it's time to bring closure to finished goals by distilling and systemizing what you've learned in the process of pursuing those past goals. Or, you might find you are able to draw on past achievements to assist and support your current goals and plans. It is a good transit to bring structure to your thoughts and communication. You may find it's a little easier to accept authority – yours or someone else's – and that you are able to speak authoritatively about things about which you have knowledge or experience.

Sep.06 – Mercury square Jupiter (15:30 of Virgo/Sagittarius)  (Sep.05 in HST, AKDT)

You may be seeing the weak links in your knowledge, understanding or beliefs right now. Your ideas and words might seem to fall short of what your mind envisions, or you might be unable to convince others of your point of view. As a result, it can be tempting to over-compensate with more self-confidence, faith or optimism than you actually have. Or, you might give out "too much information" by over-explaining or through nervous rambling. Alternatively, you might encounter someone else who does this and perhaps have a blaming or judgmental reaction to them. This is an opportunity to learn something about how you might jump to conclusions or blame, possibly triggered by a situation that challenges your beliefs, opinions or perspective. To learn more about this part of yourself, try taking some time to think about what is really bothering you or what you really need to say in that situation. There may be a higher truth to be found if you open your mind to something you're reluctant to acknowledge, rather than looking for a "final truth" around which to close it.

Sep.06 – Mercury sextile North Lunar Node (15:57 of Virgo/Cancer)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

You may be more perceptive and observant than usual during this transit. You could find the right words to communicate a little easier, or you might simply find that things make a little more sense. It can be a good time to write that letter, ask that question, make that call, when you feel you are in focus to move forward. The only caution is to be careful not to focus on what you want so strongly that you can't see what's really there, or to try to force the situation to be what you want it to be.

Sep.06 – Sun trine Saturn (14:00 of Virgo/Capricorn)  (Sep.07 in AU)

This is a great time to apply yourself to serious work. You may feel especially self-sufficient and independent, with a strong and clear sense of self and purpose. There is support for your ambitions as long as you stay grounded and practical in how you approach them, which should come easily right now. Your ability to cooperate and feel comfortable with authority figures is likely to be high, along with your capacity to embrace your own authority and make solid decisions. This is a time when you are more likely to feel grounded and deal with problems in a practical, decisive way. Your energy may be more serious than "party animal," but even if you are in "party mode" it will be easier to realistically know your limits and not overdo it. If you've been waiting for the right time to move forward with or manifest a project or plan that you've been putting together (or wanting to), this could be the time when that happens. The final launch or manifestation may or may not happen now, but you will probably be able to at least move forward in some important steps.

Sep.06 – Venus trine Pluto (20:47 of Virgo/Capricorn)  (Sep.07 in ADT, NDT, UK, AU)

Close one-on-one connections with people (close friends, lovers, partners of all kinds) will tend to gravitate to a deeper, more intense level now. Instead of automatically doing the diplomatic, "nice" thing, you may find it is more fulfilling to share more of your authentic feelings. It may be possible now to connect with people on a deeper level, while still ensuring that your interests are equally balanced with theirs. The trick is to do this without trying to control or overpower the other person, and it may be easier to avoid those traps now. You could make some deeply intimate connections with people under this transit. Financial dealings with other people may also go smoothly, although it might be wise to get clear confirmation that you're both on the same page about the fine print.

Sep.07 – Mercury opposite Neptune (17:23 of Virgo/Pisces)  (Sep.06 in HST, AKDT)

Inspired thinking, mental fantasy, imaginative ideas and lucid dreams are likely during this transit. This can result in enormous creativity that sees inspiration and magical ideas in the world around you (be sure to write them down to develop later). Your communication may be unusually intuitive and inspiring now. However, it can also be a time when your perceptions about reality are a bit off and coloured by wishful thinking and irrational conclusions. Doing a reality check with a trusted friend or advisor is a good idea, especially if you are trying to make important decisions right now. But be sure to explore any non-rational or irrational thinking, since the veil between the conscious and unconscious mind is thin now and you can learn much by observing your thoughts and perceptions.

Sep.08 – Sun square Jupiter (15:41 of Virgo/Sagittarius)  (Sep.09 in AU)

You may be inspired to expand far beyond your usual boundaries during this time, although this may or may not work in the way you hope it will. It can be a time of challenge, when you decide that now is the time to move beyond your current horizons and make the ultimate push for something you believe will bring you happiness, fulfilment and prosperity. How successful you are will probably depend on how prepared you are for what comes next. Your judgment and your ability to see things objectively and realistically can be a little "off" during this transit, since your hopes and ideals might distort what is actually possible. It can be easy to overestimate the envisioned results, or you might underestimate the amount of work necessary to sustain your dream and prevent it from being just a flash in the pan. Try to avoid being overconfident and making promises you can't keep (including to yourself).

Sep.08 – Sun sextile North Lunar Node (15:58 of Virgo/Cancer)  (Sep.09 in AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

This can be a feel-good time when you feel like you're on your game. Your sense of purpose and direction feel like they're flowing just right. Opportunities may present themselves and you are in a good position to recognize them and know how to make them work to your advantage. Even if you encounter difficulties, you are likely to be more confident in approaching them and therefore better able to find effective solutions. Pay attention to people who cross your path for 2-3 days around this time, since they could offer resources, support or connections that could be helpful. Just be careful that you don't resort to manipulation to make things happy your way. If you have to force something to work then maybe there's a better solution.

Sep.08 – Mercury trine Pluto (20:46 of Virgo/Capricorn)  (Sep.09 in ADT, NDT, UK, AU)

It is possible to dive deep below the surface now, in your perception of situations, other people and yourself. If you have been working on trying to understand the deeper motivations and dynamics of what is happening in your life, there could be a breakthrough now. The light may finally go on in the darker corners that have eluded you, and your penetrating insight. You could find a way to articulate these perceptions and speak your mind in a way that is unusually powerful or intense (so be careful you don't inadvertently blow your audience out of the water). This transit can bring an opportunity to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions or ineffective forms of communication. Try writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit. This is the only exact pass for this transit, since Pluto was out of range when Mercury came through this area two months ago.

Sep.009 – Mars trine Saturn (13:58 of Virgo/Capricorn)  (Sep.08 in HST, AKDT, PDT, MDT, CDT)

This is a great time for disciplined action that can produce grounded, specific and stable results. If you have a project that needs to push ahead to the next step, you may find this is a good time to do that. If you want to make progress with your ambitions, goals and plans, this can be a good time to make plans or to take action. You are likely to feel "together," capable and strong, giving you a serious, calm and realistic confidence. It's usually easier to control or restrain your more volatile emotions, and present yourself as someone who is stable and on top of things. This transit can bring sustained physical energy that doesn't burn itself out quickly and can pace itself for lasting endurance. Remember that the effects of this transit typically last only about a week or two, so make the most of it!

Sep.10 – Sun opposite Neptune (17:18 of Virgo/Pisces)  (Sep.09 in HST, AKDT)

For a few days, you are face to face with the boundless universe! This could come to you in a number of ways, from creative inspiration to vivid dreams to enchanted encounters with great mystery. There is a tension now between clarity of purpose and infinite vision; between being centred in yourself versus being connected to the Great Unknown; and/or between personal independence and autonomy versus blurred boundaries with a person or situation. If you lose your bearings, you could feel some depression, lethargy or confusion. Your dreams, longings and expectations may be rooted more in wishful thinking than reality right now, which could lead to disappointment or disillusionment. It's a good idea to do a reality check with a trusted friend if you need to make any important decisions. On the other hand, you are also able to see your hopes, dreams and illusions more clearly than usual, reflected back through other people or the outside world. It may be like looking in a cosmic mirror that shows you what's going on in your subconscious. Just remember that it may be hard to tell which is the real thing and which is the mirrored reflection. Just like a dream, you might get better insight by interpreting them intuitively rather than literally. Try expressing your experiences, feelings and perceptions in ways that are poetic, artistic, creative and non-rational.

Sep.11 – Mars sextile North Lunar Node (15:47 of Virgo/Cancer)  (Sep.12 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Including a day or two before and after today, this may be a time when opportunities come your way. Taking action could have results or implications that reach farther than you expect. You might feel more energetic, motivated or passionate than usual, and therefore find it easier to get moving on projects and plans. By the same token, if you move your body and take steps toward what you want, the incentive and energy could come to you to keep going with it; in other words, getting your physical energy moving could "prime the pump" mentally and emotionally. Remember that this could be any kind of energy—not just positive strides, but also anger, hostility, vindictiveness and rejection. Use this opportunity wisely.

Sep.12 – Mars square Jupiter (16:01 of Virgo/Sagittarius)  (Sep.11 in HST)

Under this transit your energy is more accessible, but this could be more problematic than helpful. On one hand, you have more enthusiasm and motivation available to take bold steps toward your goals. However, you might be forced to do this out of a sense of moral coercion, rather than freely choosing it. Or, your actions could be triggered by exasperated impulse more than by a sense of what is right for that moment. Impulses are likely to become easily amplified, but also more difficult to control. This includes anger, sexuality, aggression and assertiveness. Confidence could come across as arrogance. Courage might become reckless or brazen. If you find it difficult to bring out these qualities in yourself, they may come spurting out in a way that might be frightening or intimidating. But once your energy has emerged, you are in a better position to learn how to harness it, use it, work with it and summon it at will.

Sep.13 – Mercury conjunct Venus (28:50 of Virgo)  (Sep.14 in AU)

Social connections, diplomatic communication and receptive awareness mark this transit. It can be a great time to negotiate contracts or agreements because the communication can usually flow easily. Focus your awareness on achieving a mutual balance between you and the other person. A win-win solution is especially easy to achieve now – so much so, in fact, that it might be tempting to only say what you think the other person wants to hear (which may or may not be wise). This can also be a time of appreciating and expressing beauty, pleasure and sensuality. If there's someone you want to get closer to (in terms of romance, friendship, business, partnership, or even an adversary!), talking gently and listening receptively can be the key that unlocks the door. You may also get new creative ideas from your interactions with people or from observing them.

Sep.13 – Sun trine Pluto (20:43 of Virgo/Capricorn)  (Sep.14 in AU)

Your sense of purpose is strong now, as you are able to tap into a deeper level of energy and determination. Your personality is likely to be more forceful now, which can be great if you need to make a strong impression but perhaps not so much in situations requiring delicacy or subtlety. Your ability to see below the surface of things is especially clear, and it may be possible to unearth secrets or get at the core of unconscious patterns (yours or others'). This is a time when your personal presence may come across as somewhat "larger than life," so you need to remember that a little goes a long way during this transit. This could be a time when you suddenly find the strength to stand up and assert your personal power in a situation that has felt overwhelming or discouraging. On the other hand, if you are still struggling to learn how to own your power, without using nuclear bombs to make your point, you may still feel a bit overwhelmed or daunted by this transit. In that case, take smaller steps and don't try to push the river.
