Sep.28 – NEW MOON in LIBRA (05:20 of Libra)

Greetings dear reader! I am very pleased to feature Aerin Fogel as our guest astrologer for the Libra New Moon, Sabian Symbol, and Lunar Forecast. My interpretations for the day-to-day transits follow below Aerin's article. I'll be back again before you know it for the Full Moon in Aries (Oct.13). In the meantime, enjoy Aerin's lovely look at Libra! ~Wendy

Welcome to Libra season!

We’ve just passed the Autumnal Equinox (Sep.23), where the world hangs in the balance between the lightest day and the darkest day. (Whether we’re gaining or losing light now depends on which hemisphere we live in). Libra season speaks to this balance, and the capacity in every human being to hold a middle ground.

Following the integration and earthiness of Virgo season (Aug.23 to Sep.23), Libra reminds us that we can hold more, that we can aim for more when we are grounded, and that variety and multiplicity can be some of life’s greatest pleasures.

The New Moon in Libra occurs on Saturday September 28th at 2:26 PM EST, at 5 degrees and 20 minutes of Libra. As with any New Moon, it is an opportunity for us to set new intentions in keeping with the theme of the season, and to reflect on how this may progress for us in the next six months leading up to the full moon in the same sign (which for Libra will occur in the early Aries season: April 7, 2020).

But this particular New Moon asks us to assess where we are coming from and where we are going, whether we are contributing to clarity or confusion in our own lives, and whether hanging in the balance is something that allows us to push ahead or actually leaves us stuck.

The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner.
~ Gordon B. Hinckley

The Libra Stellium in this New Moon chart (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus) strengthens the themes we are already working with, as well as contributing to some of the challenges. The lunation occurs close to (but not quite conjunct) Venus in her domicile (Libra, in this case, which Venus rules), offering us the possibility of something beautiful.

Stellium in Libra

We have an opportunity to move forward in pursuit of joy, love, connection, intimacy, artistic beauty, and all things Venus. As we move through the equinox transition, she calls us into higher pursuits, challenging us to aim for more and expand our understanding of ourselves and our relationships. There is a promise of more, but we have to believe it’s possible.

At the same time, the Stellium (pulling Mercury in) may leave us with option paralysis, open to the vast possibility of what comes next in our lives as we move towards the solstice, but unable to think clearly or take action because there are too many open doors.

With Libra, we take our cues from those around us. If others push forward, we are encouraged to do the same. We want to do what’s right and good in the world. But we fear pushing forward if we’re the only one. The Libra Stellium fears stepping out of line and disrupting the comfortable harmony of following along with what makes everyone happy.

To light a candle is to cast a shadow...
~ Ursula K. Le Guin, A Wizard of Earthsea

Meanwhile, the Sun and Moon are opposite Chiron in Aries. Chiron here bursts the optimistic bubble of planets clustered together in a Cardinal Air sign (Libra), showing us the other side of the story.

New Moon in Libra opposite Chiron

So, we remember a time when we tried to act on what we believed to be right even if it went against the grain, and we were harmed for it. We remember how painful it can be to take a risk, to speak up for ourselves and for those who are invisible.

Here is where we can easily become stuck with so much Libra energy – instead of moving from our past into our future, we hang in the balance between, afraid to take a risk because it may erupt into loss and suffering. We keep our relationships at a safe and comfortable distance in order to not feel the pain of our own inner worlds and see the underbelly of those we love.

We project only the ideas and images of ourselves that will receive praise and create harmony. But what happens to the parts of ourselves we try to hide that do not fit into this image? Chiron will not let us forget who we really are, no matter how hard we try to stuff it down.

No matter how far you travel, you can never
get away from yourself. It’s like your shadow.
It follows you everywhere.
~ Haruki Murakami, After the Quake

There are bigger players here who won’t let Venus and this Moon settle for a comfortable status quo either. From Venus' other domicile (Taurus), Uranus is exactly quincunx the New Moon, and Neptune is loosely quincunx Venus as well. So, we may feel that pushing ahead in our relationships, leaning in closer, striving for a higher ideal in our lives, and looking to the next step, is an exhausting business.

Quincunx aspects from Uranus and Neptune

We may feel like it’s much easier to shy away from the task, go back to sleep, or let it all drift until life simply happens to us (rather than because of us), as is Neptune’s way. Or, we may feel the anxious need to either pick up and leave or unnecessarily sever ties, as is Uranus’ way.

Don’t be fooled by the peaceful calm waters on the surface of this Libra Moon, because there are very unsettled energies lurking below. Our task with Libra is to let them rise up and not stuff them back down in hopes of pretending everything’s fine.

In relationships we may feel these dissociative temptations lurking. Or, we may not feel them at all, but instead feel confused by how our circumstance plays out, as if we’ve had no part in it. Herein lies the passive tendency of Libra despite its Cardinal status, for we may feel like we are not in charge of our reality when we are keeping parts of ourselves out of the picture.

There is nothing like a dream to create the future.
~ Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

Our greatest support with this Moon is Jupiter exactly sextile Venus and in its domicile as well. Jupiter tells us not to be afraid – to have faith that we are capable of positive change in our relationships, and life direction.

Venus sextile Jupiter

Venus and Jupiter in their own signs are each strong and capable, and they cast a light on one another in the sky, showing the way, offering encouragement and strength. If you’ve ever seen Jupiter and Venus in the sky, they are unmistakable lights that outshine many others. This is how our path will become clear as the moon renews itself.

Jupiter reminds Venus that she need not disappear, dissociate, or sever her ties, but instead can have hope for a deeper sort of connection. Just as the sky is darkest before dawn, Jupiter reminds the Libra Stellium to look ahead and see the big picture, to see that we are in fact going somewhere and are not simply stuck in the past. Chiron may remember painful risks from our history, but Jupiter knows that the future can be bright and different.

The way forward for us is to remember hope. Hope is one of the single greatest human qualities, for it allows us to be resilient in the most challenging of times, and believe that we can create something new and better despite how much we’ve suffered.

Compassion is the basis of morality.
~ Arthur Schopenhauer

For this New Moon in Libra, Jupiter offers us hope in our relationships – to be able to lean in closer and show our true selves despite the risk it involves, and to push forward rather than remain in a comfortable and safe distance.

Jupiter offers us hope in our life direction as well, reminding us to look up from our daily grind and see the bigger picture of where we’re going. Our beliefs and morals must inform our daily choices, and this is what will bring us into right relationship with others and the world around us. Lastly, Jupiter offers us hope for humanity and the civilizations we’ve built on this Earth.

Libra asks us to realign our societal ideals around something more sustainable and right for the planet, otherwise the quincunx to Uranus in Taurus promises great distress to our natural environment should we stay in the safety of our status quo. We must remember what we believe in, and let it guide us forward.

Information and options are fed to us all day long, which can often leave us confused and uncertain of how to act. So, take time on this Libra New Moon to get clear and focused, and use the supportive energy of Jupiter to light the way forward. Hope can be found even in the darkest moments, and our closeness to one another can be a source of great joy and resilience here.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair.
So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.
~ Jack Layton, Canadian politician

Sep.28 – Venus sextile Jupiter (17:54 of Libra/Sagittarius)  (Sep.29 in UK, AU)

There is an abundance of creative inspiration, material enjoyment, feel-good pleasure in the air! Your luck and opportunity to attract money, love, resources and self-esteem are high right now. It may be relatively easy to attract the people, possessions and opportunities you want or need, but you'll still have to work to get them. On the other hand, your eyes may be bigger than your stomach (as mother would say) and you might be tempted to charm, flirt or bluff your way through a situation more than usual. There may also be a tendency to self-indulgence. These are not necessarily bad things, but it's probably wise to remember to use this energy to enhance your best judgement, not override it.

Oct.01 – Venus square Pluto (20:38 of Libra/Capricorn)  (Sep.30 in HST, AKDT, PDT, MDT, CDT)

Relationships and interactions are likely to be deep, intense and transformative under this transit. The same goes for your sense of beauty, and your material and financial dealings, which may require you to delve far deeper than usual to discover the truth under the surface of things. You may encounter the dark shadow of your desires – the obscure, secret or unconscious hunger that hides underneath the "politically correct" face you show to the world (and to yourself. This is a challenge to be resolved in some way. It might bring out conflict rooted in envy or jealousy, if someone has something (or someone) that you feel you are entitled to. Or, it might prompt you to reach very deep into your soul to find your inner beauty and value. You may be challenged to develop empathy or empowerment about something that initially seemed undesirable, unforgivable or scary. This transit can show you the problem areas that need to be transformed and healed. And seeing these more clearly can be a catharsis that sets that transformative healing in motion.

Oct.03 – Pluto Stationary Direct (20:38 of Capricorn; until Apr.25.2020)   (Oct.02 in HST, AKDT, PDT)   ("What's a Station?"   "What does Retrograde mean?"   Read more about Retrograde planets.)

For about a week before and after, you may experience energy that is intense, compelling and transformative, as Pluto changes direction to its normal forward motion. If you've been going through deep, cathartic changes in your life over the last 6 months to a year, you may find that this station brings a shift in how you are able to approach and act on those changes. This might be a time when you feel the weight of power struggles or loss in your life, but it can also galvanize empowering strength in yourself that you didn't know you had. Above all, it is a time when your deepest, most authentic Self can start to emerge and be reborn anew.

Oct.03 – Mercury enters Scorpio (until Dec.09)  (Oct.02 in HST)

Cunning communication and insight are at their peak, as Mercury skulks through Scorpio. It's a time for unearthing secrets and delving deeply into the psychological Shadow (Carl Jung's term for the unconscious parts of ourselves that we don't want to or know how to face). There is opportunity for healing and grounding now, but you may have to resist the temptation to manipulate others to control that process. Your awareness of the undercurrents around you could be increased...or you might stir up those undercurrents in others without intending to, by blurting things out in a blunt or harsh way. This transit presents an opportunity to learn new ways to wield words with the skill of a surgeon – to heal and remove what is toxic, not to wound or retaliate. Use it wisely. If you are not crystal clear with yourself about your motives and feelings when communicating with others, your unconscious or hidden agendas could seep through and cause hurt when that was not your intention.

Oct.04 – Mars enters Libra (until Nov.19)  (Oct.03 in HST, AKDT, PDT, MDT, CDT)

This is a time when aggression, anger and directness may have to be expressed gently, diplomatically and gracefully. Libra is not the most comfortable sign for Mars, since his typically sharp-edged and forceful nature becomes blunted and filtered through Libran softness and tact. It's a bit like dressing Star Trek's "Worf" in a tutu. However, when these energies combine and work well together, what can emerge is the passion to fight for justice and fairness. This is "the fisted hand in the velvet glove," and can create situations in which you must respond more like a charming but crafty ambassador than a brute force boxer. On the other hand, with force, aggression and directness somewhat blocked or unavailable as options, it may be difficult to respond decisively or purposefully to conflict and challenge. You need to rely more on your wits than your impulses, and strive for a win-win solution than a clear victory.

Oct.06 – Australia moves ahead to Daylight Saving Time

If you live in the Australia region of the South Pacific, and if your region observes Daylight Saving Time, it's time to move your clocks one hour FORWARD. If you're not sure if this applies to you, check the change dates for your location on DateAndTime.com.

Oct.06 – Sun square North Lunar Node (13:12 of Libra/Cancer)   (Oct.07 in AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

When the Sun squares the Lunar Nodes, your sense of purpose and identity appear to be in conflict with the lessons you need to learn in life. It may feel like you're forced to take a detour around your direct route to your destination (whatever that might be). This may only be true on the surface – if you look deeper at the situation (or possibly in retrospect), you'll probably find that your sense of self is actually helped by the benefits that you are able to get on that detour, which would have missed if you hadn't been diverted from your original path.

Alternatively, you might be confronted by a conflict or stressful dilemma that you usually resist or flail against. This may be an opportunity to explore a deeper level of your experience and feelings. Perhaps there is fear or resentment or defiance behind your reaction. This is a chance to try on a different perspective and respond in a different way that can help you move through the situation instead of just being blocked by it.

When the Sun squares the Nodes it is sometimes called "Moon Wobbles," which is a bit of a misnomer. The Moon itself doesn't wobble or even necessarily interact directly with either the Nodes or the Sun. Rather, the Moon part of us (the inner, feeling, intuitive, sensitive part of us) may feel a bit "wobbly" or unsteady when the Sun squares the Nodes. The "Moon Wobble" effects are said to build and dissipate for up to 10 days before and after the Sun-Node square is exact.

Oct.07 – Mercury opposite Uranus (05:26 of Scorpio/Taurus)  (Oct.06 in HST, AKDT, PDT)

This is a wakeup call! You are asked to open your mind so that you can see something about your life, yourself or your situation that has eluded you until now. It might be a shocking revelation that changes your whole perspective...or it might also be a delightful surprise that adds a new dimension you hadn't thought of. However it manifests, you are in a position to see your situation more clearly and objectively – although this can also make it seem like this energy is outside of you and happening TO you. However, if you look closely inside yourself, you may see thoughts, perceptions and impressions that correspond to the external events and participate in the interchange. Emails, Internet chats, and interaction with technology may be part of this transit as well. Communication may be a bit erratic or unpredictable, so be careful not to speak thoughtlessly or carelessly. However, you may find that words and perceptions come to you intuitively and spontaneously.

Oct.07 – Sun square Saturn (14:13 of Libra/Capricorn)   (Oct.08 in AU)

It is necessary for you to come to grips with limitations, boundaries or expectations. If you have been avoiding some task or obligation, this transit might bring consequences from that avoidance or a warning of consequences to come. You might also encounter a situation that requires you to accept unwanted responsibility or restricts your freedom in some way. You might be faced with some part of your life being pruned back, either to rein in something that is out of control or to make room for new growth. This is likely to be more or less stressful depending on how comfortable you are dealing with responsibility, authority, limits and hard work. If you have a hard time with authority issues, you might find yourself in conflict with someone in authority under this transit – perhaps in part because your buttons are getting pushed. On the other hand, this could also be a time when you are challenged to take action or make a decision that involves taking on more responsibility. It is also a time when you may have to find better ways to deal with personal boundaries – accepting others' or learning to assert your own. You're bumping up against reality, so try to work constructively with it, not hurl yourself against it.

Oct.08 – Venus enters Scorpio (until Nov.01)   (Oct.09 in AU)

Venus is the planet of relationships, interaction, beauty, pleasure and material resources. She struts through Scorpio with attitude! As a result, we may experience sensuality, sexuality and intimacy in a more intense, in-your-face kind of way. You might feel the need to establish a better balance of power with others that is pleasant and even-handed on the surface but also deals with the more gritty or intense energy that tends to lurk under the surface. It may be easier to attract what (or who) you want now, by focusing your intent and interest on the object of your affection and desire. However, there can also be a danger of becoming manipulative, controlling or devious to get what you want. Strive to become centred in your deepest heart's desire through steadfast self-honesty. Aim to avoid becoming obsessed with power, wealth or lust so that you lose sight of your true light inside. This is a good transit to take joy in your instinctive nature.

Oct.08 – Mars opposite Chiron (03:07 of Libra/Aries)  (Oct.09 in UK, AU)

Your efforts and physical/emotional/mental energy may struggle with fundamental limitations and latent imperfections under this transit. Weakness or chronic problems in health may flare up now, especially if you are under a lot of stress. It will help to do whatever is necessary to support and take care of yourself. You may find it works better to minimize or prevent deterioration, rather than to attempt a complete cure of whatever ails you. Emotional health may also be affected, bringing out latent issues related to anger, sexuality, assertiveness or courage. This is a time when you can probably see all these problem areas more clearly, and as a result it can seem like they are getting worse. While this may or may not actually be true, you are in a position to respond to these issues in a different way now – precisely because you are able to see the nature of the problems more objectively and clearly. So don't allow yourself to just be intimidated by difficult experiences you might have now; use them to take steps toward a new well-being.

Oct.11 – Mercury enters the Shadow (11:35 of Scorpio until Dec.07.2019)   (Oct.12 in AU)  ("What's the Shadow?"  Read my articles about Retrograde Cycles.  Read my article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury is now "in the Shadow" – the area of Zodiac where it will later go retrograde in about 2½ weeks time. During its retrograde cycle, Mercury travels through the same span of the Zodiac three times (called the Shadow). The first time through, it is going in direct motion (moving forward), then retrograde (looks like it's going backwards), and then direct again. This means there is a more extensive process of development and change involved with things that Mercury influences—ideas, thoughts, frame of mind and mental focus. It also concerns the collection, exchange, analysis and organisation of information. All forms of communication are also affected. This includes not just talking, but also email and snail mail, the Internet, the media in general, books and magazines, as well as public transit (buses, trains, etc.) and neighbourhoods.

The situations developing over the next couple of weeks (leading up to when Mercury actually goes retrograde) will likely require further research, deeper consideration and adjustments to unexpected discoveries over the next couple of months. Expect changes in your plans, increasingly disrupted communication, and new information coming to light that may not fit conveniently into your plans. It's wise to leave lots of extra time to do things, to plan future projects and get to wherever you're going. Patience is a valuable quality during this time. If you must make important decisions during this time, try to build some flexibility into your plans to allow for later changes—or if possible, you may want to delay final or irrevocable decisions until well after Mercury goes direct.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):

Oct.12 – Mercury trine North Lunar Node (12:28 of Scorpio/Cancer)   (Oct.13 in AU) ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Today, and up to a couple of days before and after, things can feel like they're starting to make sense. What you read, hear and observe may seem more obvious and your ability to put this into words could flow more easily. You might identify and figure out how to utilize the tools, skills, assets and ideas that could bring you further down the road toward whatever destination you're pointed toward. However, a reality check about how wise it might be to act on these ideas and benefits is still a good idea. Write down good ideas to follow up with later.

Oct.12 – Venus opposite Uranus (05:13 of Scorpio/Taurus)   (Oct.13 in AU)

Relationships, social interaction, material resources and emotional balance may be a bit unpredictable or unstable around this time, as Uranus the Awakener sounds a wake-up gong in these areas. You may be more inclined to act out of character, to experiment or be reckless in relationship, social or financial matters, which could be liberating or disturbing, exciting or upsetting. Circumstances or other people might create a situation in which you are forced to respond in an unusual or unfamiliar way. The idea behind this energy is to become more flexible and more open to a broader vision of what is possible in those areas. There may be weak spots in the affected areas which this transit illuminates by creating problems, so that they can be repaired and strengthened, or else broken and released so that new opportunities can come in. Trust the process and keep your eyes open to seeing new truth and insight.

Oct.13 – Sun sextile Jupiter (20:06 of Libra/Sagittarius)   (Oct.14 in AU)

This is a time when your understanding of the Big Picture and your place within it has the potential to click into place. As a result, your confidence and self-esteem can be quite high right now. Your ability to see opportunities and possibilities more clearly can produce an experience of being "lucky." Your insight into life and the world around you may be especially bright, optimistic and inspired. This is a "feel-good" transit, when your sense of self can seem to expand and become free. You may feel especially connected to spiritual energy during this time. Just be careful that all this self-assurance and "knowing" doesn't backfire, by overestimating the extent of your knowledge or underestimating the reaction of your audience. It is possible to become a bit self-indulgent under this transit, so be careful not to overdo it. Beyond a reasonable caution, this is a transit to enjoy!
