Oct.27 – NEW MOON in SCORPIO (04:25 of Scorpio)

This New Moon in Scorpio and the lunar cycle it begins has one of these "interesting" charts that could produce quite a bit of "drama." Start with the fact that the New Moon itself (Sun conjunct Moon) is in partile opposition to Uranus in Taurus (partile means same degree, different signs). So, the next few weeks are likely to be anything but boring!

With disrupting Uranus pulling against the deep Water sign of Scorpio, this alignment is a bit like an underwater earthquake. When that literally happens in the physical world, we usually get tsunami warnings (a.k.a. tidal waves). And an earthquake that triggers a tsunami is a very useful image for this lunation cycle.

So, what exactly is a tsunami? It's typically caused by some kind of shift at the earth's crust level, like an earthquake – disruption at the bedrock level, usually along a fault or crack between tectonic plates. With Taurus being a Fixed Earth sign, and Uranus being the planet that shakes things up, you can't get a much better analogy for Uranus in Taurus than an earthquake!

Tsunami and earthquake diagram

When a sizable earthquake happens underwater, large amounts of water are suddenly displaced, translating into a series of rippling waves at the water's surface, called a tsunami. An extreme example of this is the massive underwater earthquake that caused the tsunami that devastated Japan in 2011; in fact, the earthquake's fault shift was the largest ever on record!.

No, I'm not suggesting this lunar cycle will literally see major earthquakes or tsunamis. However, we could be in for something like this on a psychological, societal or political level. Things could get shaken up and events unfold that have far-reaching results and implications beyond what they seem initially. In particular, since we're talking about Scorpio, what gets disrupted could stir up a lot of stuff from far below what we see on the surface—very possibly in an unexpected or startling way (Uranus).

In other words: Drama. Disarray. A Disturbance In The Force (so to speak).

For example, you might experience an event that hits you on a deeper level than you would have expected. It may resonate with something at an subconscious level, stirring up old feelings and associations with past events. As a result, you may have a mixed response to both current and past feelings that appears out of proportion to the current situation.

Or, you might find old issues, feelings and dynamics coming back to haunt in current situations. Old family dynamics or lingering disagreements with friends, or unresolved grief from past losses. This is especially likely with Mercury about to go retrograde (Oct.31), which can often bring up old stuff that needs to be addressed—again.

"Hey, Mr. Nakata. Gramps. Fire! Flood! Earthquake! Revolution! Godzilla's on the loose! Get up!"
~ Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore

Now: before you do a nose-dive under the bed to hide out for the next few weeks ;-) consider that this particular momentum can also be used in a very positive way. Uranus is also known as the Awakener, so this NM/Uranus alignment could suddenly open your eyes to something that's been hiding in your blind spot. Or, you might get a flash of insight that clarifies something you've been spinning your wheels on for a while.

New Moon opposite Uranus

It's also a chance to do some "spring/fall cleaning" in your life. Cleaning requires that you work directly with the "dirt" in order to loosen it up. This may not exactly be in your Top 10 of things you love about life, but the results can be very rewarding and healing. And once loosened, it can be washed or swept away. Release!

Another way to look at this alignment is the breakthrough of rebirth. If you've been doing your homework on self-improvement and self-growth, this could be a time when you find you can break through the shell to be born again into a new world with new challenges and new insights.

So, this earthquake/tsunami-like energy can ultimately revive, refresh, renew, release and rejuvenate. So much of our energy gets depleted by trying to hold back thoughts, feelings, perceptions, opinions or desires that we feel are wrong. We keep it hidden to avoid dealing with it, or we beat ourselves up about something we regret.

Scorpio energy can stir up stuff you hoped you could ignore; however, it is by facing it that you can finally work with it, get un-stuck, release it and move on. A bit of chaos is an excellent precursor to making change. You have to put things back together again anyway, so you might as well make it better than before, right? And you might never have "gone there" if something hadn't made it necessary, right? The best blessings often appear initially as problems.

Now: that may sound naïve or idealistic. ("Oh look Martha, a tsunami is coming. It can wash the floor for you.") Certainly disruption of any kind can be annoying, upsetting or even scary, but as with tsunamis, not every disturbance is extreme. Case in point: we usually hear mostly about the high-drama monster tsunamis (like Japan in 2011); and while it's true that some waves can reach as high as 100 feet (!!) most tsunamis create a rise in seawater of less than 10 feet. It might not be your idea of fun, but it doesn't have to feel like the end of the world either.

Whether you personally are likely to experience the Uranus factor as a 10-footer or a 100-footer depends in part on how it interacts with your natal chart. If you have planets or points within a degree or two of 4° in Fixes signs (Taurus, Scorpio, Leo, Aquarius), you're likely to feel it more strongly. In that case, you're probably already feeling the Uranus transit, so this New Moon alignment may be able to crystalize the issues and challenges you're already working through.

The best way to work through this energy is to resist the urge to control or stop what is happening—although if you're in danger, by all means do what you need to do to stay safe. That said, our experience of sudden or dramatic change is often more about our emotional reactions, like fear or worry, than what's actually happening. As long as you're not completely running away from it, it's important to have faith in yourself and your ability to get through this in one piece.

How often it is that the angry man rages denial of what his inner self is telling him.
~ Frank Herbert, Dune

Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio, so whatever Mars is up to in the New Moon chart will add an overtone of colour to the lunar cycle. In this case, Mars is still in Libra and therefore still in detriment—opposite the sign of its (other) rulership (Aries).

As I've discussed in recent updates, a planet in detriment has an uphill climb since it must operate at odds with its basic nature. Mars prefers to be active, impulsive, free, emotional and direct. In Libra, Mars is expected to be circumspect, diplomatic, operate in harmony with others, and act with sensitivity, even when angry.

So, when the Scorpio Sun and Moon are calling on their ruler, Mars, to help them figure out how best to respond to all that Uranian disruption, Mars is likely to send back instructions on how to maintain grace under pressure, discretion in the face of chaos, and sympathy for what the "other guy" is going through. Hmmm... not exactly what they had in mind.

Mars aspects

Mars has another reason to be cautious and unusually well-behaved: he is precisely square Saturn (90°) and it feels like Saturn is sitting on him. The Puer (Eternal Child archetype) is under the watchful eye of the Senex (Wise Old Man archetype). Saturn is there to make sure Mars doesn't resort to his old habits of carelessly taking out his frustrations on his surroundings or behaving impulsively and erratically.

Mars is also approaching a square to Pluto (90°) who is allied with Saturn through their approaching conjunction, so Pluto not terribly sympathetic to Mars either. Pluto likes to be in control, and while in Capricorn multiply that by 10. The last thing Pluto wants is a yappy little mutt bouncing around trying to be the alpha dog, even though Mars feels more like a muscular Pitbull.

Mars turns to Neptune hoping for an escape trick that could give Mars some breathing room inside the Saturn-Pluto straitjacket. Alas, Neptune is tightly quincunx Mars (150°) and speaks in a language that mostly sounds like gibberish. Neptune proclaims that if he wants some relief from the Big Bad Boys, he's going to have to humbly submit to a Power Greater Than Himself, while meditating quietly in solitude. Bold Mars in socializing Libra isn't exactly thrilled with that prospect.

Oh—and did I mention that Mars is also a Singleton in Air signs? Uh-huh, which means his job is to think clearly, rationally and objectively for everyone else in the chart.

Mars is NOT having fun.

Those who speak of progression but are afraid of change are self-repressed and therefore unable to reach any further than their eyes can already see.
~ Criss Jami, Killosophy

Now: Mars and Saturn have a complicated relationship. By rulership they are in conflict. Passionate Scorpio is at odds with dispassionate Aquarius. Brazen Aries and cautious Capricorn are in square aspect (90°). Even the signs where they are exalted—Mars in objective Capricorn and Saturn in interactive Libra—are in a conflicted square aspect and argue with each other.

Mars and Saturn, sign rulerships

Mars is our adventurous side, our motivation, willpower and our ability to take action, but this part of us can also be erratic, headstrong, impulsive and self-centered. Saturn is our maturity, the wisdom that comes with experience as we age, and our ability to foresee consequences, make plans, and basically be a grownup, but can also be rigid, stubborn, closed-minded and abruptly authoritarian.

Mars sees Saturn as an old stick-in-the-mud who's always looking to find ways to say No, and Saturn sees Mars as an impetuous child who needs discipline and limits to avoid problems. These are clearly not the easiest energies to get pulling together in the same direction at the same time. So it makes sense that Mars and Saturn would have a difficult relationship in the natural structure of the zodiac.

And yet, despite their contradictory natures, they form a crucial partnership that enables both to be more productive and effective. It's just that they don't usually enjoy it, and they're not always able to find that sweet spot of cooperative balance. This difficulty can become especially prominent when they are in a stressful aspect: conjunction, opposition or square (as they are right now). That means these parts of us usually feel conflicted within ourselves (freedom versus responsibility, eagerness versus restraint) or with the world around us (arguments, disagreement, competition).

A worthy relationship is an agreement that challenges and supports both participants.
~ Joseph Rain, The Unfinished Book About Who We Are

On the plus side, the Mars and Saturn parts of us generate friction and pressure that can be used in a constructive way, like an internal combustion engine where a contained explosion moves the machinery parts, moving the car down the road. A miracle of productivity!

Mars and Saturn, exalted signs

The chart supports a more positive use of these planets since Mars and Saturn are in Mutual Reception by Exaltation – each is in the sign where the other is exalted. That means it should be easier for them to become allies and bring out the best in each other, instead of just being at loggerheads. They're probably not likely to be drinking buddies, but they can make very effective co-workers. Or, think of them like countries that disagree about certain fundamental values, but when they collaborate together they can create a stable economy and govern their own territories more successfully.

With this in mind, Mars decides to rethink his opinion of Saturn. He realizes they don't have to be completely at odds with each other after all, and could negotiate some common ground. So, while Saturn can be a bit heavy-handed and authoritarian, especially in Capricorn, Mars' high energy and impulses can ensure that Saturn doesn't become stuck or fossilized. And a Libra Mars can also help soften the hard edges of the rules that Saturn demands, making them a little more user-friendly.

In the same way, Mars generally has a tendency to "fly blind" on impulse, guided mostly by instinct, desire and (often distractible) attention, but Saturn can put some boundaries around that rowdy energy to keep it grounded, focused and on track. In particular, Mars in Libra can sometimes be indecisive, ineffectual or inconsistent in its actions, so Saturn could provide a clearer view of the options, priorities and what is at stake.

As an example, you might find you can succeed better in whatever you're trying to do if you reach out to a friend or co-worker who can provide feedback, suggestions or an extra set of hands. Perhaps you could do a trade—they'll help you with your project if you'll cook them dinner, or you could consider an ongoing partnership of shared labour that benefits both of you.

Mars and Venus, Mutual Reception

In order for these planetary energies to work cooperatively, instead of just fighting each other, it's necessary to allow those parts of us to be more flexible and open-minded. The part that wants freedom and independence may need to understand the benefits of sacrificing a bit of those qualities. The part of us that wants safety, certainty and control also needs to realize that sooner or later, change, action, movement and some risk are required.

Mars and Venus are also still in Mutual Reception by rulership (Mars in Libra, Venus in Scorpio). Therefore, Mars gets some additional help from Venus who can provide some shrewd advice about how to vigorously persuade the other guy while wearing a sweet smile.

You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed.
And you are beautiful.
~ Amy Bloom

Mercury conjunct Venus

Speaking of Venus, she and Mercury are still conjunct in Scorpio, providing some background texture to the whole Mars-Saturn-Pluto-New-Moon-Uranus thing. They have been doing a little dance for a couple of months now, travelling in conjunction since the end of August and continuing until early November. They conjoined first on Sep.12 at the tail end of Virgo. Now, Mercury is slowing down and Venus overtakes him a mere 17 hours before Mercury officially turns retrograde on Oct.31.

In other words, Mercury stations retrograde less than a degree from conjoining Venus. This is bound to permeate Mercury's Rx cycle with sensory and emotional sensitivity. Taking place in Scorpio, you may find you are especially drawn to emotionally fulfilling experiences, like art, music, yummy food and getting cozy with friends or lovers. Small talk and gossip may be unsatisfying, as you crave a meeting of the minds that is more profound, meaningful or intimate.

Stellium in Scorpio

Even more significant, this upcoming Mercury retrograde period could be filled with fresh insights about how to support yourself better. It might involve seeking out others who can support and appreciate you. Watch for new awareness about something that has held you back from embracing a deeper level of self-acceptance.

The Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus form a Stellium in Scorpio, which can bring you up-close-and-personal with the world more than usual. You may be unusually sensitive to passionate or extreme dynamics around you. If you tend to be more comfortable with lighter, more fluid energy, you might find this is a bit more intense than you prefer. Even if you tend to be more emotionally robust, the high octane energy right now might be a bit overwhelming. You may need to take a step back and give yourself some breathing room on a regular basis.

On the other hand, this is an excellent energy to help you break through the places where you're stuck. If you've been struggling with old habits or obsessions, the Uranus factor could be just the ticket to get you out of your rut. But it will take some passionate commitment, as well as a combination of audacity (to get you moving) and discipline (to maintain some stability) and focus (to keep the other two in balance) and passion (to stay committed to the process).

Let this Scorpio New Moon engage your creativity—in any and every sense of the word. And expect to apply yourself in a disciplined, focused way in order to turn that creative inspiration into something substantial.

you won’t be the same person who walked in.

Day to Day Transits for the Next 2 Weeks

Oct.27 – Mars square Saturn (15:08 of Libra/Capricorn)  (Oct.28 in AU)

(Repeated from last update.) The impulsive forward action of Mars meets the serious structure of Saturn. The resulting friction can often generate considerable heat in the form of frustration, argument, conflict and stress – but also productivity and results for hard work. Your efforts may seem thwarted and your actions blocked at every turn. Your sensitivity to problems with authority figures can be especially high, as well as your sensitivity to others not cooperating with your own role as an authority figure. The youthful, free spirit in you is somehow required to deal with the serious, responsible, cautious side of you, and a power struggle between the two energies can easily result. If one side wins out over the other, either depression and guilt or rebellion and obsession may result.

However, you are not without power or ability! This friction can also be put to use in very productive ways. Your energy, desire and goals can be made manifest and concrete – even if possibly forced by circumstance. Obstacles can strengthen us, if we work with them instead of just fighting against them. To minimise interpersonal problems, remember that assertiveness is important, but aggression or rigidity will usually only get the other person's back up. You may find yourself in a situation where you must defend or assert your personal boundaries. Or, you might find it difficult to comply with someone else's boundaries. If the heat from this transit starts to overwhelm you, take some time out, find a safe (perhaps creative?) outlet to vent your feelings, and then find a new way to approach the problem.

Oct.28 – Sun opposite Uranus (04:36 of Scorpio/Taurus)  (Oct.27 in HST)

This transit brings an encounter with the Awakener! This could come in the form of another person or outside situation that shakes you out of your habitual routine and pushes you to try a new approach to your situation. Life may be very unpredictable right now, requiring you to be spontaneous, innovative or independent in the way you respond to it. This could be stressful or exciting! It is actually showing you a new path in the darkness, like a lightening flash in the night. If you feel startled or caught off guard, or confused about what to do next, find your internal centre and try to be open to what the situation is illuminating for you. You now have a chance to shed some old habits and ways that you are stuck, if you can stay centered in the middle of the whirlwind. You may experience revelations – that "ah-ha!!" feeling – which could open up new possibilities and opportunities for you. However, it might feel like you have little choice but to try these new things (rather than freely choosing them). You could find yourself reacting to others with a powerful impulse to throw off the shackles of anything that feels restrictive, to reclaim your independence – although this could also be motivated by a fear of commitment or responsibility too. It is wise to check your own inner motives, feelings and assumptions before automatically dismissing, rejecting or rebelling against other people.

Oct.30 – Mercury conjunct Venus (27:36 of Scorpio)  (Oct.31 in AU)

Social connections, diplomatic communication and receptive awareness mark this transit. It can be a great time to negotiate contracts or agreements because the communication can usually flow easily. Focus your awareness on achieving a mutual balance between you and the other person. A win-win solution is especially easy to achieve now – so much so, in fact, that it might be tempting to only say what you think the other person wants to hear (which may or may not be wise). This can also be a time of appreciating and expressing beauty, pleasure and sensuality. If there's someone you want to get closer to (in terms of romance, friendship, business, partnership, or even an adversary!), talking gently and listening receptively can be the key that unlocks the door. You may also get new creative ideas from your interactions with people or from observing them.

Oct.31 – Mercury Stationary Retrograde (27:38 of Scorpio; until Nov.20)   (Nov.01 in AU)   ("What's a Station?"   "What does Retrograde mean?"   Read more about Mercury Retrograde.   Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Yes, it's that time again! Mercury goes retrograde for the next 3+ weeks. For up to a week before and after today, Mercury is moving very slowly or stopped (hence "stationary" or "making a station"). During this time, you may experience intensity, frustration, confusion, miscommunications, or feel like you're getting bogging down in your progress.

Mercury retrograde is usually a time when it is a good time to rethink, rehash, reflect, and tie up old loose ends, rather than begin new ventures. It is typical for new insights and information to emerge later in the retrograde cycle that you didn't anticipate, which can change the whole picture. Because of this, it is usually advised to avoid making final or permanent decisions (e.g., signing contracts or putting new projects into action), during the retrograde and even up to 2 weeks after Mercury goes direct. However, it is an excellent time to do fact-finding, research and investigation to prepare for major decisions, which are usually best put off until well after Mercury goes direct.

In the meantime, while Mercury is retrograde, expect the unexpected, and leave lots of extra time when planning your schedule (to minimize any disruptions from delays and complications). Stay flexible and learn to roll with the weirdness. It's common to have to reschedule appointments or redo things because the instructions or information got messed up the first time. Do some things that use your intuitive, creative, non-rational mind for a while until Mercury goes direct again.

If you absolutely must do something important during this time that can't be postponed, don't be surprised if you wind up having to redo things. It can help to be especially vigilant about triple-checking what you do, but some of these mishaps can't always be predicted or prevented, so don't be hard on yourself (nor on others).

Remember: Mercury loves to play practical jokes. This is his playtime. ;-) It helps to learn to laugh with him.

Here are the key dates of the current Mercury cycle (using North American Eastern Time):

Nov.01 – Venus enters Sagittarius (until Nov.25)  (Nov.02 in AU)

Venus focuses her passion on truth-seeking, philosophical exploration, a lust for knowledge, spiritual intimacy, music in foreign languages and multicultural social discourse. It is a time to explore the meaning that your close relationships bring to your life, and the value that you bring to the Significant Others in your life. It is also a time when you might seek to increase your income (or your spending – careful!) and expand your potential for material wealth and self-worth. You will likely find that negotiations, interactions and transactions work best when you apply spiritual values to them and keep the big picture in mind. You may also find yourself involved with people and transactions that involve other countries, cultures, languages and travel. There could be a teaching-learning element in your dealings with people, so aim for the highest good of all concerned.

Nov.02 – Sun trine North Lunar Node (10:18 of Scorpio/Cancer)  (Nov.03 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

You may feel confident, optimistic and empowered today and a couple of days before and after this date. It can feel like the pieces are falling into place and you can make progress in what you're striving to do in your life right now. And if only because of this added self-confidence, this could indeed happen. Just an added caution, though: even though the lights are green doesn't mean you shouldn't look both ways before moving forward. In other words, a reality check as to the wisdom of what you want to do is still a good idea.

Nov.03 – North America rolls back to Standard Time

If you live in Canada, United States, the Caribbean or some areas of Central and South America, and if your region observes Daylight Saving Time, it's time to move your clocks one hour BACK. If you're not sure if this applies to you, check the change dates for your location on DateAndTime.com.

Nov.03 – Venus trine Chiron (02:07 of Sagittarius/Aries)  (Nov.04 in AU)

Healing and rebalancing are possible now, especially in the areas of relationships, finance, resources and values. Any problems that have persisted in these areas lately could benefit from an influx of helpful and healing resources now. Relationships and interactions of all kinds can benefit now, since it can be easier to see the beauty and value in others whom you might usually dislike or feel ill at ease with (or they with you). Negotiations and strategic efforts to resolve conflicts may go smoothly now, especially when you balance the results in everyone's interests. You may also be able to attract what you need to heal your wounds (physical, psychological, spiritual, etc.). Like it says in the "Serenity Prayer," you may now find it a bit easier to accept that which you cannot change, while finding you make progress with the things you can.

Nov.05 – Mars square Pluto (20:54 of Libra/Capricorn)

This can be a volatile combination of energies, which can generate enormous stress and conflict, but can also motivate you go beyond your perceived limitations. The biggest dangers with this transit include obsessive control, violence in response to frustration, and natural reactions of anger being blown out of proportion into rage. However, if you are able to harness this energy and put it to productive use, it can fuel your ambitions and drive you to push past the barriers that are in your way (including your own discouragement or lethargy). There can be a fine line, though, between empowering yourself with determination and courage versus forcing the issue in a way that creates more problems than it solves. And there is a difference between being obsessively attached to the outcome versus discovering that you have more courage, strength and tenacity than you thought you did, when your back is against the wall. Sexual tension can be strong under this transit, so it is wise to use some good judgment about whether or how to act on that. Power struggles with others can become very intense, so strive to be clear in yourself about what you really want and how you can assert your interests without inflicting the emotional equivalent of nuclear war.

Nov.08 – Sun sextile Saturn (15:59 of Scorpio/Capricorn)  (Nov.09 in AU)

You have an opportunity now to make some progress in obtaining results in your projects, career, ambitions and creative expression. It is possible to tap into a disciplined mindset, which can be used to take some steps toward goals that you're trying to manifest. You are surrounded by potential to achieve this, although it will not simply be handed to you – you will still have to work for it. Your mind and purpose are likely to be clear and strong now, enabling you to be decisive and productive. Leadership, management and organizing abilities are potentially high right now. Asserting your authority in a situation that calls for it can be done successfully, as long as you don't let yourself become rigid or bossy. It can be a good time to learn or practice new skills, or to apply yourself to any kind of serious study. It is also a time when you could formulate some solid plans for future projects or make some progress with current undertakings. Make the most of it!

Nov.08 – Sun trine Neptune (16:01 of Scorpio/Pisces)  (Nov.09 in AU)

Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so sis the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Hope, optimism and imagination spring eternal right now, which can bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity can become very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision. And you experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.

Nov.08 – Saturn sextile Neptune (16:01 of Capricorn/Pisces)  (Nov.09 in UK, AU)

The sextile aspect brings together two adversarial planetary energies in creative ways. Saturn and Neptune as as different as chalk and cheese. Their energies are about structure versus fluidity, definition versus ambiguity, fact versus fantasy, control versus surrender, hard work versus inspiration. There are a few areas where they can come together in beautiful ways through music, art, service based on compassion, and any practical application of experiences and perceptions that cannot easily be defined. The sextile aspect between them now indicates an opportunity to combine these energies in innovative ways, either through action (you making this happen) or appreciation (you enjoying the results). So, you might find you're moved to redecorate, join an art class or go to art galleries, listen to or play or dance to music, etc. Or, you might have a vision of some wonderful potential and want to make that manifest. And in that sense, you might be a bit more susceptible to "too-good-to-be-true" prospects that lack integrity or realism. Do your homework before making a commitment.

Saturn and Neptune make 3 passes of this sextile aspect: Jan.31, Jun.18 and Nov.08 2019.

Nov.09 – Mercury Retrograde sextile Pluto (20:59 of Scorpio/Capricorn)  (Nov.10 in UK, AU)

Penetrating insights and passionate communication are possible under this transit ...although, so is speaking more forcefully than you intend to about things that require a bit of delicacy or discretion. It is also a time when your mental concentration can come together so easily that you become obsessed. You may prefer in-depth discussion to small-talk, and it might feel awkward if you aren't able to explore the depths in your interaction or communication with others. However, you likely have an increased ability to pick up on undercurrents of what's happening around you. This is also a time when you can start to shed and leave behind old worn out perceptions and ways of communicating. You also have an increased ability to take thoughts, ideas and information and transform them into something healing ...or wounding. Choose your words carefully and mindfully. Writing down your thoughts and ideas to capture the energy of this transit can help you gather the deeper qualities.

Nov.11 – Sun conjunct Mercury Retrograde (18:55 of Scorpio)  (Nov.12 in AU)

When the Sun conjoins Mercury Retrograde, there is a new beginning in the areas of awareness, communication, use of information and exchange of ideas. This may or may not be heralded by a recognisable event or experience, although for a day or two your consciousness may shift. Your awareness and mental concentration may take a dip into the unconscious, becoming unusually murky and muddy, or it may rise into ultra-consciousness and become suddenly clear and lucid (afterwards returning to the usual Mercury retrograde fog). A new awareness or perspective on what has unfolded during the retrograde cycle thus far may surface now, or an unworkable attitude or perception of these events may fall apart under the weight of new information. This shift of awareness may be obvious or subtle, sudden or gradual, but this transit marks a turning point in the Mercury retrograde cycle. It also marks a time when mental awareness often goes further underground, for the rest of the retrograde period, making it a little harder to operate objectively and rationally in the outside world. Spend some time in your right-brain, intuitive, non-rational mind, which can coax your mental creativity and inventiveness to the surface.

The peak period of Mercury conjunct the Sun is when they are within 17 minutes of arc (or some say within 1 degree), which lasts roughly 14-20 hours when Mercury is direct, or 5-8 hours when retrograde. This is called being Cazimi, meaning "in the heart of the Sun." When any planet is Cazimi, it is said to be unusually strong – being in the eye of the storm, so to speak – and can potentially be used to great advantage (for better or worse).

In the case of Mercury, your perceptions, awareness, ideas, and ability to put your thoughts into words may have a strong impact, being unusually clear, focused or direct. It is recommended that you use wisdom and good judgment, since an extra sharp wit during this time could possibly have negative consequences, intended or not.

This particular Sun-Mercury Rx Cazimi is a very special one! Not only are they conjunct, they are also precisely parallel. As a result, Mercury will actually move across the face of the Sun during the Cazimi period, appearing as a tiny, tiny dot. Astronomers call this a Mercury Transit. The next time Mercury does this won't be until 2032!!

Astrologically, this will intensify the Mercury-Sun conjunction. Write down your ideas, pay attention to your dreams, and don't be surprised if you get into some deeper-than-usual discussions with people.

Check the table to see what time this will happen where you are, or you can look it up on TimeAndDate.com.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you're going to try to watch the Mercury Transit, you MUST WEAR PROPER EYE PROTECTION or you will damage your eyes.
