Dec.26 – SOLAR ECLIPSE ~ NEW MOON in CAPRICORN (04:06 of Capricorn)

I assume you've heard about the big triple conjunction of Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto in 2020? If not, you must have just landed from Neptune. ;-)

With this Solar Eclipse in Capricorn, we enter into the first of a 2-part Introduction to what will no doubt be a momentous year, courtesy of these three outer planets. Part 2 of this Introduction will be the Lunar Eclipse in Cancer on Jan.10.2020 (more about that in the next update).

The influence of Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto has already been with us for a while. Saturn and Pluto have been parallel by declination since early 2016, and Jupiter joined them at the beginning of 2019.

Looking at the rising intensity of worldwide issues and events, it's easy to see that they have been setting the stage for the conjunctions that come in 2020. (For more about these parallels and more, read my article: Turning Points ~ Preparing for Jupiter-Saturn-Pluto 2020.)

Saturn and Pluto remain within an 8° orb of conjunction from January 2019 until January 2021, although they have just one exact pass on Jan.12, 2020 (just 2 days after the upcoming Lunar Eclipse).

Their combined cycle time varies depending on where Pluto is in its orbit, ranging between about 30 to 37 years between conjunctions. So when these slow-movers get together, they typically mark significant periods in the history books.

Examples include WWI, the rise of fascism and authoritarianism around the world, and the start and later escalation of the Cold War, among other world-changing events. So, it's not surprising that we're again seeing the temperature rising dramatically in recent years—literally and figuratively!

Jupiter and Pluto maintain an 8° orb of conjunction from February to December in 2020. They come together about every 12 years, so again, it's not a common occurrence.

Jupiter and Saturn hover within 8° virtually all year in 2020. They are within orb from March through August 2020, their closest being less than 5° in May. Then again from September 2020 to February 2021, coming together in an exact conjunction right on the December Solstice of 2020.

These two conjoin every 20 years, often coinciding with a "changing of the guard" in some form on the world stage. This particular conjunction also marks a shift from roughly 200 years of Earth signs into about 200 years of Air signs. The emphasis shifts from building, manifesting, and developing collective order to conceptual interchange and the amalgamation of knowledge.

So... It looks like we've got one of those "interesting" years coming up!

"Why can't I see what happens?"
"We can never see past
the choices we don't understand."
~ The Oracle, The Matrix Reloaded

Saturn and Pluto represent heavy energies that challenge us to confront hard realities and work through ways of dealing with them effectively and authenically. These realities are usually the kind you might prefer to tiptoe around, hoping they won't notice until they're long gone into the past.

As demanding as these energies usually are to grapple with, facing them can actually leave you stronger and more capable than you thought you were. It's the kind of transit you can look back on and say, "Wow, what a time that was, and it got me to where I am now—but I'm glad it's over!"

Jupiter Saturn Pluto conjunction in Capricorn 2020

Jupiter is normally a more optimistic, upbeat, illuminating energy, although his attitude is more serious and sombre when he's in Capricorn and feeling a bit undignified. But Jupiter's natural energy is to be expansive and liberating, and he could be a bit of a wild card in the mix.

So, as Jupiter joins up with Saturn and Pluto throughout 2020, it may have an effect like tossing salt into very hot water on the stove—it could provide a burst of expansive, boiling energy that brings latent energy to the surface. In other words, Jupiter might release some of the heavy Saturn-Pluto energy that's wedged into a deadlocked struggle. Jupiter's serious philosophical thought, focused on insight, understanding and generosity, could loosen up a situation that is stuck.

On the other hand, Jupiter might also join forces with Saturn and Pluto, amplifying an attitude of judgment and blame by doubling down on whatever or whoever is perceived to have trapped all that energy in such a rigid space in the first place. This could release inhibition that can clear the air, or it might just make a difficult situation worse. We just don't know how this wild card will play out until we get there and decide how to respond.

Although it might be inevitable that we must deal with this intense dynamic—collectively and/or individually—any particular outcome is not guaranteed. It is therefore crucial that we all work through this energy as mindfully, consciously, ethically and honourably as we can.

So, this is the kind of drama that the Solar and Lunar Eclipses are introducing us to in December and January. These eclipses weave the threads first of Jupiter, then of Saturn and Pluto, stitching them into what becomes a complex tapestry throughout 2020 and beyond.

Are you ready? Strap yourself in—this could be a bumpy ride!

Standing on the Moon, looking up at the Earth,
you see that the promise and the potential of our world
is obvious as it is magnificent. And for the people
who live on the green and blue ball, there is
no difficulty they cannot overcome,
no solution they cannot grasp,
no distance they cannot travel.
~ From the Earth to the Moon, TV miniseries

So, let's look at this first Eclipse. A Solar Eclipse is a New Moon with an attitude. It is so precisely aligned that we can actually watch* the Moon passing in front of the disc of the Sun—if you're in the right place at the right time. (* Never look directly at a Solar Eclipse unless you use proper eye protection, or you can damage your eyes.)

In this case, you'll see it best if you're in Sri Lanka or southern India. The next best places are around Saudi Arabia or Indonesia. And you may see a partial view if you're elsewhere in the Middle East, northeast Africa, southern Russia, the Philippines, Japan or northwest Australia (weather willing, of course).

If you can see the Solar Eclipse, it means you're standing in its shadow—literally and figuratively. What a concept! A New Moon is normally a time when something new is stirring, usually at an unconscious or unformed level. So, a Solar Eclipse gives us access to a deeper level of that embryonic energy.

A Solar Eclipse can feel stressful for a short time, or you might only feel a vague stirring of something since the energy is often subconscious. Either way, it can release a deeper momentum that will colour life events to some extent over the next while, from months or even years.

If the eclipse interacts with something in your chart—especially dynamic aspects to fast-moving planets and points—you're bound to feel it in a more pronounced and personal way. This would especially apply if you have the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Ascendant, MC or Lunar Node between 0 and 8 degrees of Capricorn, Cancer, Aries or Libra.

This ain't no time for doubting your power
This ain't no time for hiding your care
You're climbing down from an ivory tower
You've got a stake in the world we ought to share
~ Sting, Send Your Love

At the eclipse, the Sun and Moon are tightly conjunct Jupiter at 4-5° of Capricorn. The South Lunar Node is also close by, just a few degrees down the road. These 4 points are also squished together into a tight parallel by declination, all of them stacked up inside less than half a degree.

Having a New Moon conjunct Jupiter would normally be a cause to celebrate and have a party! Jupiter can bring confidence, exciting promise or possibilities, a flash of enlightenment or insight, and/or a strong sense of meaning and purpose.

Sun, Moon, Jupiter, South Lunar Node

This can still happen in this case as well, but the party is likely to have a more serious tone or context. For example, metaphorically or literally, you might be moved to get involved in a cause that could bring a sense of hope or compassion to those who are disadvantaged or struggling. Or, you might decide to volunteer at the local food bank over the holidays, or pay for the coffee of the person behind you in line. Consider the many ways you could contribute some light and love to the world around you, and also give yourself some uplifting healing as well—but do it in a practical or concrete way.

You might also feel inspired by new possibilities, an illuminating dream, or a vision of expanding or invigorating a goal you are already working toward. This revelation needs to be accompanied by a solid plan and organized resources to "make it go" so that it doesn't stall when you start it up.

This idea is given an extra spin by the trine from Uranus to the Sun, Moon and Jupiter (120°). In fact, this could add a fresh sense of liberation to try something different, or to reach beyond your comfort zone into something quite uncharacteristic. And if you've been feeling discouraged, blocked, or lacking in resources, Uranus may encourage some outside-the-box inventiveness to do more with what you have.

Despite Jupiter normally being an upbeat energy, it's not without its difficult side which might cast a shadow over this Solar Eclipse. Capricorn's love of arriving at a final conclusion could combine with Jupiter's tendency to leap to assumptions that judge or blame, therefore creating a limited container of understanding.

If this containment can lead to a decisive approach to an otherwise murky, ambiguous or stuck situation, it could be a good thing. But one end of that proverbial box needs to be kept open so that it doesn't just become a pressure cooker that represses what's inside, or worse, builds to the exploding point.

In other words, even if you're 120% certain that you're right or that everything's in order, it's still good to keep an open mind because it might look quite different when you look it through a greater context. You might see new possibilities or even potential problems, and you may decide to adjust the plan as a result. So, Uranus' refusal to play by the rules might help keep the energy circulating and accessible—and hopefully not a lightning strike that ignites an explosion.

Whatever happens, they say afterwards, it must have been fate. People are always a little confused about this, as they are in the case of miracles. When someone is saved from certain death by a strange concatenation of circumstances, they say that's a miracle. But of course if someone is killed by a freak chain of events -- the oil spilled just there, the safety fence broken just there -- that must also be a miracle. Just because it's not nice doesn't mean it's not miraculous.
~ Terry Pratchett, Interesting Times

Stellium in Capricorn

Saturn administrates the Solar Eclipse, as well as the Stellium in Capricorn, being that sign's planetary ruler. The Stellium consists of Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto. Saturn is a mere 1½° from Pluto, and just 17 days from their exact conjunction. So, even though the Sun, Moon and Jupiter are a bit too far behind them to be officially conjunct Saturn and Pluto, that combined Capricorn energy is saturating the air nevertheless.

Saturn midpoints

Saturn also pulls other points of the chart together, being on a bunch of midpoints. For example, if you find the position exactly in between the Sun-Moon and Venus, you'll find Saturn precisely there (0:00 orb!), which means Saturn binds them together even though there isn't necessarily an aspect between them. Saturn also sits on the Venus-Jupiter midpoint, and also on the Mars-Neptune midpoint.

So, most of the chart is turned to face Saturn which becomes a somewhat unifying force. This suggests that to bring various strands of your life together to function effectively, it's best to stay realistic, grounded, and focused on the practical result you want. Flights of fancy and fantasy are always wonderful, especially at this time of the year filled with holiday magic. But if you want them to manifest you'll need to devise a clear, concise definition of what that should look like and a solid plan to make it happen.

Saturn and Pluto are also sextile to Mars and Neptune (60°), which should help to mobilize and lighten up the heavy Saturn-Pluto energy, although these aspects are separating and therefore waning in influence. Mars and Neptune have already "been there, done that" and are now out of orb for their own trine aspect (120°, exact Dec.13). So, the dynamic faith and inspired action from Mars and Neptune are most likely to come from lingering energy that emerged a couple/few weeks ago, rather than something new coming in. The good news is that you may find you have more resources and inspiration left in your basket than you realize.

Remember this: Nothing is written in the stars.
Not these stars, nor any others. No one controls your destiny.
Even at the very worst – there is always choice.

Mercury is Out of Bounds by declination (Dec.22 to Jan.12), so our thoughts and ideas are capable of stretching beyond our usual familiar awareness. This is amplified by Mercury being in expansive Sagittarius, as well as being less then 2° shy of the Galactic Centre (exact Dec.27). Mercury is a bit overwhelmed, being in Detriment in Sagittarius, so your brain might feel like that old TV commercial slogan: "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!"

However, Sagittarius is a visionary and inspiring place to hang out, Detriment or not. And against the backdrop of Saturn-Pluto intensity, Mercury being Out of Bounds in upbeat Sagittarius and surrounded by the transpersonal glow of the Galactic Centre can still bring revelations filled with insight, hope and luminous curiosity about what lies beyond your familiar awareness.

May the tears you cried in 2019
water the seeds you're planting for 2020.
~ Unknown (found on

Venus in Aquarius is a singleton in Air signs, suggesting that tapping into and exchanging ideas might best done by reaching for innovative beauty, embracing a love of humanity and getting together with friends. Technology too could provide the means to ensure you are not isolated or disconnected over the next couple of weeks. This is emphasized by Venus and Uranus being in mutual reception (each being in the sign the other rules).

Communicating technology, like Google, Facebook, Twitter, TV, radio or even your garden variety telephone, could be valuable resources now to explore new information and stay up to date with what's happening in the world. On the other hand, that same technology could also help you take a break from what's happening in the world by connecting to uplifting experiences, finding new friends, and trying something different to distract you from whatever has you feeling overwhelmed or stuck.

Poinsettia Whatever you do to mark the turning wheel of the season over the next couple of weeks, I wish you the brightest blessings, warmest joy, rejuvenated hope, empowering resilience, and enduring peace as you head into the New Year.

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
Everyone would have a friend
That right would always win
And love would never end;
This is my grown-up Christmas list.

Day to Day Transits for the Next 2 Weeks

Dec.27 – Sun conjunct Jupiter (05:41 of Capricorn)  (Dec.28 in AU)

Confidence, optimism, leadership, vision and well being characterise this transit. Your self-esteem and self-awareness can be wide open now. Your sense of being part of something greater than yourself may be vivid and bright. And you may have increased ability to identify and act on opportunities around you, which can bring you "lucky" prospects. On the other hand, if you have difficulty embracing a positive sense of self, or if you shy away from believing you are a treasured Child of the Universe, then this transit might stir up those difficult feelings to the surface. You could wind up trying to compensate with over-confidence, arrogance, blind faith, or gambling on what are realistically poor prospects. The trick is to tap into the spirit of who you are. Let go of blame and instead apply some honest yet compassionate assessment. Let your spirit shine brightly out to the world, but not so brightly that you blind yourself or others by your own light. Consult a trusted friend for feedback or advice if in doubt. This is a great time to expand your horizons, whether that is through travel, by learning something new, by sharing your knowledge with others, or by exploring the Meaning of Life.

The peak period of Jupiter conjunct the Sun is when they are within 17 minutes of arc (or some say within 1 degree), which lasts roughly 17 hours. This is called being Cazimi, meaning "in the heart of the Sun." When any planet is Cazimi, it is said to be unusually strong – being in the eye of the storm, so to speak – and its potentially can be used to great advantage (for better or worse).

In the case of Jupiter, all the traits listed above are likely to become expanded, perhaps even larger-than-life. For example, you might feel an increased sense of self-confidence ...or an overly inflated self-importance. You might be very open to a broad perspective that expands your understanding about something ...or which could make it easier to believe you know more than you actually do.

Dec.28 – Mercury enters Capricorn (until Jan.16)  (Dec.29 in AST, NST, UK, AU)

Cheerful, adaptable Mercury travels through conventional, structured Capricorn, bringing out his analytical, focused side. This is a good time to plan your projects and map out a game plan to reach your goals. It is probably best to choose discipline over distraction. Communication, ideas and awareness may become serious, structured, grounded and manifest now. Just don't let them become suppressed or censored. This is a great time to do some serious planning and organizing for future projects and goals. It is also a good time for analyzing and evaluating what you have been involved with during the past year or so. What have you learned? What information has come to you that has led you into new directions? What goals have you achieved, and what goals do you want to pursue now? What plan of action is required to get you from here to there? It may be a time when you can face some hard reality and tough decisions better than you normally do. Because Mercury in Capricorn tends to be serious and factual, it may also be a time when you are more prone to depression or discouragement. It will help to schedule regular breaks in your routine to get away and plug your head into a different perspective for a while.

Dec.29 – Mercury square Chiron (01:34 of Capricorn/Aries)  (Dec.30 in AST, NST, UK, AU)

Your mental focus and perceptions may feel a bit strained right now. You could find yourself locked in a struggle of indecision that stems from a "glass half empty" versus "glass half full" dilemma. It may be difficult to stay objective and evenly balanced in your perspective, but by working with this you could also find a new mental focus that gives you increased clarity. It might be tempting to sink into cynicism as a way to deal with what seems like a no-win situation. On the other hand, this transit could bring your mental perspective to a kind of "healing crisis" that forces you to get a better grip on the ideas, communication and frame of mind that have been problematic for you. Instead of reaching for extremes (hoping this will clarify the path in front of you), it will help more if you can take a few steps back to allow all the conflicting and out-of-sync elements to coexist together – creative paradox. If you have been in denial about something, this could be a turning point that allows you to grapple with the complex reality of your situation.

Dec.30 – Sun conjunct South Lunar Node (08:23 of Capricorn)  (Dec.29 in HAST) ("What's a Lunar Node?")

This transit involves a creative release or a letting-go of a piece of your self-image that you don't need anymore. However, this letting go can often be difficult, especially if what you have invested a lot of your sense of self in whatever you're letting go. It might feel like circumstances are wrenching it away, or you could feel quite relieved to let go of this old baggage. Letting go can free up a lot of creative energy, life force and joie de vivre, which can then be rechanneled into other forms of self-expression. Follow your heart! It is time to begin letting go of something in yourself that no longer serves you well. This could be a negative belief about yourself, or perhaps dropping an inhibition that has eroded your self-confidence. This transit only happens close to the eclipses, so its energy is likely to come out around the timing of those events more noticeably.

Dec.30 – Mercury trine Uranus (02:42 of Capricorn/Taurus)  (Dec.31 in AU)

Unusual ideas, flashes of insight and seeing unexpected possibilities are all part of this transit. You may find it easier to be open-minded right now, especially about insights that have eluded you. Your ability to see beyond your usual horizon of perception can bring visionary brainwaves, as well as a fun sense of humour. You might be inspired to experiment with something new or do something out of character. You might have an impulse to break free of old habits or constraints. This can be a very liberating transit that opens your mind to new possibilities and ideas. However, be careful that you don't become so liberated and spontaneous that you become erratic, hyper or reckless. Words may come tumbling out of your mouth before you've had a chance to consider their wisdom, or you might find yourself talking non-stop and interrupting, creating a bit of awkwardness in those around you. On the other hand, you might also find the clarity and vision that gives you the words to speak your truth with new conviction. It's a great time to do some writing or other form of self-expression, especially if it's spontaneous or involving technology.

Jan.02 – Mercury conjunct Jupiter (07:03 of Capricorn)  (Jan.03 in AU)

This aspect can make you quite talkative and your mind flooded with ideas. Be careful you don't blurt out any secrets! Your stream of consciousness ideas can flow abundantly right now with optimism and visionary possibilities. Write down your best ideas for later development, since you may be having too much fun playing with ideas, to stop and make them manifest. Basic perceptions and simple communication can provide food for thought that feeds your greater understanding and philosophical insight. Your point of view expands to identify opportunities, possibilities and the broader implications of what is happening around you. You might get a flash of vision, insight and inspiration. You could be called upon to form an opinion, consider a different viewpoint, expand your knowledge, or make a judgement call. Your conscious awareness is open to spiritual experiences right now.

This energy flies! You might feel inspired to defend a righteous cause, or to lead others in taking a stand about something. Or you might strive to move heaven and earth to reach toward a dream. You might be motivated to learn something new, or to share your knowledge with others. Inspiration, confidence and optimism can run high during this transit, which may be experienced as a release of optimism, freedom and spontaneous elation. However, it could also be a bit too much of a good thing, launching you or others into arrogance, confrontation or intolerance, especially if challenged by strong opinions. Expanded courage could make it easier to take risks or try new adventures, which will probably work best if you're balanced with realism or common sense. This is a time to act from your highest intention of morality, philosophy, spirituality, compassion and understanding.

Jan.03 – Mercury conjunct South Lunar Node (08:23 of Capricorn)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

It's time to let go of old perceptions and ideas that are now just getting in the way of your ability to see things clearly. This might not be an easy task, because your new point of view might show you something you don't really want to see. It might mean you need to change your mind about something or someone. However, by clearing away the blocks to greater awareness, you can start to reshape the way you see yourself or others or life in general. To do this, you might need to release, share and communicate your observations of the last 6 months or so. Take advantage of this time of transition by doing some writing, or perhaps comparing notes with someone about things you've been mulling over.

Jan.05 – Mars trine Chiron (01:41 of Sagittarius/Aries)  (Jan.06 in AU)

The healing of assertive energy and willpower mark this transit. It is bound to be easier to get past any inhibition you might normally feel about being assertive, expressing frustration and anger, and putting things into action. Perhaps you are able to reconcile some internal guilt or fear that has held you back in the past. Or, maybe you are finally able to reach a state of acceptance or resolution that allows you to move beyond a conflict or struggle that has been keeping you stuck. Applying your willpower to problems has a better chance of succeeding now because you're likely to be more attuned to the path that leads to peace rather than more conflict. It's possible you might choose to use this energy in the defence of another person, a cause or something else you feel passionately about. It's possible to focus your energy, intent, motives and actions in ways that are healing, healthy, balanced and constructive.

Jan.07 – Sun sextile Neptune (16:23 of Capricorn/Pisces)  (Jan.06 in HAST, AKST, PST, MST)

Faith in the bountiful blessings of the Universe is within reach under this transit...but then, so is the fantasy that you will be magically granted anything you wish for. Although this is mostly a very positive energy, you could become so immersed in your longing for the ideal that you have trouble dealing with the less-than-ideal realities that still must be dealt with. Gaining the benefit from this transit will still require some effort. Hope, optimism and imagination are in the air, which could bring some relief from any depression or discouragement you might be feeling. Your creativity and imagination can be very inspired under this transit. Your sense of self could also get an infusion of uplifting vision, and you may experience a sense of mission, feeling that you are truly a Child of the Universe. There is potential now to lift you out of the ordinary and into the sublime – spiritually, creatively, romantically or compassionately – although this will require your cooperation to take advantage of it. Enjoy it while it lasts, but before you make changes based on what might feel like a permanent condition, remember that this is mostly a temporary influence and you will still have to live within the bounds of the physical world after it passes. Don't make overly optimistic promises now, that you will have to fulfil later when the euphoria wears off.

Jan.08 – Mercury sextile Neptune (16:25 of Capricorn/Pisces)  (Jan.09 in AU)

Your mind is very open to imagination, dreams and compassion under this transit, with a little applied effort and focus. This can be a very creative time, when ideas flow like a magical river. It can also be easy to get caught up in yearning and fantasizing about your hidden wishes, although it is possible to channel this into creative expression. (e.g., writing poetry, dancing, wistful music, singing in the shower, whatever!) The possible disadvantage is that you might want so much to reach a state of inspired intuition, magical outlook and effortless communication, that you are willing to be deceived rather than fall short of what you are hoping for. Listening sympathetically to others' problems may come easily now, and you are more likely to get a compassionate response from others about your own problems. However, it may also be difficult to draw clear and firm boundaries with others, since you are more susceptible to the emotional gravity of others. It is ultimately a time for optimism, hope, creativity and intuition, although it's wise to keep at least one foot on the ground.

Jan.08 – Jupiter conjunct South Lunar Node (08:26 of Capricorn)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

This is in effect for up to about a month before and after this date, but reaches its peak now. This is a time to take a look at your aims and aspirations, your beliefs and principles, and the ways that you expand your horizons (literally through travel, or figuratively through personal growth). It is time to assimilate and integrate the knowledge and philosophy that you've accumulated over the last four years (since Jupiter went over the Lunar North Node). You can also benefit by letting go of old beliefs and opinions that have become stale or outlived their usefulness. If you look closely, you will see a spiritual element in your relationships and interactions that is in the background as a resource. "Spiritual" in this context could mean religious beliefs that act as an inner support system, or a strong sense of your greatest potential, or a broad perspective of being a part of something greater than yourself.

Jan.10 – Sun conjunct Mercury (19:49 of Capricorn)

During this transit, your sense of self and purpose can become merged with what you think, perceive and say. On one hand, this can make for an easy flow of ideas and communication from inside your brain to the external world. It can also increase your perceptions and observations of the world, as you file it all away in your internal database. On the other hand, you may find yourself a bit tongue-tied, as it could be hard to separate your sense of self from your perceptions and ideas enough to find the words to adequately express them. In that case, just observe and go with the flow; the words will come later. It can also be a time when it's not easy to be objective, especially about yourself and how you bring yourself to the world around you. It's like your Being automatically expresses and sets into motion the things you think, perceive and want to say. This can help you to feel like your sense of self is shining effortlessly, but if your thoughts and perceptions are in conflict with other parts of you (e.g., emotions, needs, objectivity) then it might become a time when you act a little too quickly with blinders on. Strive for balance and self-honesty before you act.

The peak period of Mercury conjunct the Sun is when they are within 17 minutes of arc (or some say within 1 degree), which lasts roughly 14-20 hours when Mercury is direct, or 5-8 hours when retrograde. This is called being Cazimi, meaning "in the heart of the Sun." When any planet is Cazimi, it is said to be unusually strong – being in the eye of the storm, so to speak – and can potentially be used to great advantage (for better or worse).

In the case of Mercury, your perceptions, awareness, ideas, and ability to put your thoughts into words may have a strong impact, being unusually clear, focused or direct. It is recommended that you use wisdom and good judgment, since an extra sharp wit during this time could possibly have negative consequences, intended or not.
