Full Moon in Leo
Passion & Purpose

We are having a Full Moon in Leo on February 8th/9th, depending on your location. [See dates and time zones in the sidebar.] This is the peak of the Lunar cycle that began with a New Moon in Aquarius on January 24th/25th.

The energies of a Full Moon are strongest in the days surrounding it, yet its astrological configurations still play a part over the following two weeks. You may also start to see its themes build up following the New Moon prior to it.

Full Moons are a period in which we feel a push-pull between two opposing signs, in this case being the Moon in Leo and the Sun in Aquarius. It can play out as either a conflict, an integration, or some sort of dynamic playing out between the energies of both signs. The Moon reflects the expression of feeling and emotion while the Sun reflects the expression of ego and conscious self.

We may feel this opposition happening individually within us and/or we can also experience it play out around us with some people (or circumstances) expressing the Leo side and others expressing the Aquarian side. In some cases, Full Moons can also reflect/trigger some sort of change or release.

Leo is a passionate Fire sign. It is about our individual self-expression, what brings us joy and inspiration. It is associated with the heart, love, creativity, performing, fun, children, romance, hobbies, and leadership.

Leo is about what makes us great as individuals and can be courageous and generous. Expressed negatively, Leo energy can also be egotistical, pompous, dramatic, and demanding of attention or respect.

Aquarius is an intellectual Air sign. It is associated with friends, groups, social networks, the team, and humanity. It views the unique and authentic qualities of an individual as an important and contributing factor to the collective.

Aquarius is progressive, unconventional, innovative, technological, scientific, reforming, idealistic, and even revolutionary. Negatively, it can be aloof, overly objective, unrealistic, dispassionate, impersonal, and overly detached.

He judged the instant and let go;
he flung himself loose into the stars.
~ Annie Dillard

Full Moon Trine Mars, Both Moving Towards Trine to Uranus

This Full Moon is in a close applying trine with Mars in Sagittarius. This can reflect an energy that is action-oriented, assertive, lively, energetic, competitive, confident, or active. With Mars being in a Fire sign along with the Full Moon, the inspired, passionate, and fiery qualities of this element may be apparent or felt as well.

Mars in Sagittarius can be expansive, explorative, ideological, or educational in its actions. In this sign, we may feel like we want to do more than we can handle, however, Sagittarius’ ruler Jupiter is in Capricorn along with Capricorn’s ruler Saturn.

This can help to mitigate the overextending nature of Sagittarius in helping our actions to be more practical and structured. This will be even more pronounced after Mars enters Capricorn on February 16th.

After Mars enters Capricorn, it will be making a trine to Uranus in Taurus which is strongest from February 18th-22nd. This energy is also directly tied into this Full Moon and may be noticeable in the 20 hours following it. This can be good for actions that are experimental, innovative, unusual, liberating, or progressive. Positive surprises and excitement may also be a theme for some people.

Venus In Aries Conjunct Chiron and Square the Lunar Nodes

Venus entered Aries a day and a half prior to this Full Moon and will be there over the following 3½ weeks. We may be more proactive, bold, direct, spontaneous, passionate, independent, self-oriented, and competitive in our relations with others or in matters pertaining to love. However, we need to be cautious about being too impulsive when it comes to spending money and/or regarding pleasure.

Venus is in a conjunction with Chiron which is strongest in the 2 days following this Full Moon. At best this can bring themes connected to wholeness and healing around love, friendships, values, money, aesthetics, or pleasures. This can also reflect taking an integrative or maverick approach in these areas.

Venus will be in a square with the Lunar Nodes which is strongest from February 13th-14th but may be felt in the days leading up to that. We may feel like we are at a crossroads in areas pertaining to relationships, money, values, or aesthetics.

This may be a period of breaking from the old and moving towards something new or a different approach. We may be considering the factors of the past and present, and how to pave the way for the future. Developments or connections made at this time can have a strong karmic theme.

Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up
and see their beauty, believe in them,
and try to follow where they lead.
~ Louisa May Alcott

Mercury Going Retrograde, Jupiter Sextile Neptune

Mercury is slowing down to go retrograde on February 16th/17th mostly in Pisces and partially in Aquarius. The pre-shadow period began on February 2nd. It’s good to keep in mind that certain things that are occurring in your life in the first half of February may be directly connected to some sort of retrograde process that is coming up. Perhaps a re-orientation, re-visitation, re-working, seeing things in a different way, or finding something out that you were unaware of may come up from mid-February until mid-March.

As we get closer to the 16th, it is good to be flexible and patient. The common retrograde complications can gradually become stronger from now until the retrograde begins. I will be writing a separate article on this retrograde. (You can join Carmen's mailing list to be notified when it is published.)

Jupiter in Capricorn is moving towards its first of three sextiles to Neptune in 2020. This upcoming one will be strong from February 14th-26th with it peaking on the 19th-20th. This energy can be expansive and explorative both spiritually and creatively. It can also be good for idealistic pursuits/experiences, or anything involving putting time, energy, or resources toward helping others in need.

Mercury going retrograde in the Neptunian sign of Pisces can accentuate this aspect even more so. Jupiter being in Capricorn helps us with a grounded approach and for many people this aspect may be reflected in business matters or ambitions.

Things to Consider

How can you better tap into your authentic self-expression? What inspires and brings you joy? What creative outlets do you like to express? What can you do to have more fun in your life? What are you passionate about? How does your authenticity fit into the group, and/or best serve the collective or idealistic interests? What can you do to bring healing and/or wholeness to matters of love or friendships?

These are just some examples of what you may be experiencing during this period; however, there may be other variations of this energy playing out. If you wish to do any sort of intentional release connected to what has come up it is best to do so anytime after the peak of the Full Moon or as it is waning over the following two weeks.

Change the way you look at things
and the things you look at change.

Day to Day Transits for the Next 2 Weeks

Feb.10 – Venus conjunct Chiron (02:56 of Aries)  (Feb.09 in HAST, PST)

Unresolved problems and old wounds in relationships and finances may be in the foreground now, with potential for a new beginning and healing. However, in order to heal something, it is first necessary to become more aware of what is out of balance, which can make a situation seem to get worse before it gets better. You have the ability to wound those close to you, as well as to bring healing, as you explore what is and isn't working in your relationships. It is also a time when your approach to finances and resources may require that you face some hard realities that may not be easily or quickly resolved, but dealing with any problems will give you the chance to achieve a new balance. This is especially true when it comes to the ways that you see your physical resources as a reflection of your self-worth, and the relationships in your life as a reflection of your lovability. These issues may become aggravated under this transit, but ultimately this is meant to increase your awareness of these issues so that you can start to heal them in new ways.

Feb.10 – Mercury-Sun Greatest Elongation as Evening Star (09:07 of Pisces)   ("What's the Shadow?"  Read my articles about Retrograde Cycles.  Read my article about Mercury Retrograde.)

Mercury reaches his greatest elongation from the Sun approximately today. He is as far away from the Sun (from Earth's perspective) and as high in the western sky after sunset, as he's going to get during this period when he is known as the Evening Star. But it not easy to spot Mercury! He's extremely faint, and seen only in a clear sunset sky when it's dark enough, just above the horizon.

Greatest elongation occurs a few days after Mercury enters the Retrograde Shadow. It tends to bring clarity, when thoughts, awareness and decisions may come into sharper focus. It can be a good time to consider your path ahead, as well as to reconsider what you want to carry with you from past. A word of caution, though – thoughts that are clear aren't necessarily the best ones to act on. If you're in an emotional or volatile frame of mind, there's a risk of letting those feelings overwhelm or dilute your mental clarity. It's better to keep mind and feelings in a balanced awareness, with a little more emphasis on objectivity and thinking twice before you act.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):

Feb.13 – Venus square North Lunar Node (07:15 of Aries/Cancer)  (Feb.14 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Lunar Node?")

Perhaps you're finding that the people in your life are not being as supportive, encouraging or cooperative as you thought they would be, in terms of helping you fulfil your life purpose. Someone might suddenly withdraw their support, or maybe they contradict or interfere with what you're trying to do with your life. Perhaps an argument or disagreement happens and the upset, stress or hard feelings that result seem to cast a shadow on how you feel about your life. If this happens, it's possible that what you disagree about is something you should look at more closely. Are you responding to this situation in a way that truly reflects your values? Or perhaps your values need to be reconsidered. The agreement or balance of priorities between you might need to be renegotiated. This transit might also manifest as problems around finances or possessions, which requires some adjustment on your part. Since this transit usually lasts only a few days, in most cases its effects will not be major. If it does bring up some significant issues, it is probably hinting at a deeper issue, and you would be wise to look at the problem beyond the current circumstances. Other transits (especially to your natal chart) can give you more information about the nature of the situation.

Feb.16 – Mars enters Capricorn (until Mar.30)

Mars works very well in Capricorn – in fact, Mars can be quite the little workhorse! Action that pursues your ambitions, goals, projects or objectives can make serious progress under this transit. It may be easier to pace yourself and be disciplined in how you use your energy and effort now. Taking a serious, responsible attitude in your actions is likely to produce positive results, even more-so than usual. On the other hand, if you have difficulty with these qualities, and tend to rebel or fight to preserve your freedom, you might feel more like you're being strapped into a yoke and harness and ordered to plough the fields. However, the amount of serious, authentic work you're willing to put your energy into will likely pay off in kind. It can be a good time to show leadership or to make independent decisions that lead by example. Taking risks will make more sense if you prepare your strategy and map out your plan of action.

Feb.16 – Mercury Stationary Retrograde (12:53 of Pisces; Rx until Mar.09)  (Feb.17 in UK, AU)  ("What's a Station?"  "What does Retrograde mean?"  Read more about Mercury Retrograde.  Read more about Retrograde planets.)

Yes, it's that time again! Mercury goes retrograde for the next 3+ weeks. For up to a week before and after today, Mercury is moving very slowly or stopped (hence "stationary" or "making a station"). During this time, you may experience intensity, frustration, confusion, miscommunications, or feel like you're getting bogging down in your progress.

Mercury retrograde is usually a time when it is a good time to rethink, rehash, reflect, and tie up old loose ends, rather than begin new ventures. It is typical for new insights and information to emerge later in the retrograde cycle that you didn't anticipate, which can change the whole picture. Because of this, it is usually advised to avoid making final or permanent decisions (e.g., signing contracts or putting new projects into action), during the retrograde and even up to 2 weeks after Mercury goes direct. However, it is an excellent time to do fact-finding, research and investigation to prepare for major decisions, which are usually best put off until well after Mercury goes direct.

In the meantime, while Mercury is retrograde, expect the unexpected, and leave lots of extra time when planning your schedule (to minimize any disruptions from delays and complications). Stay flexible and learn to roll with the weirdness. It's common to have to reschedule appointments or redo things because the instructions or information got messed up the first time. Do some things that use your intuitive, creative, non-rational mind for a while until Mercury goes direct again.

If you absolutely must do something important during this time that can't be postponed, don't be surprised if you wind up having to redo things. It can help to be especially vigilant about triple-checking what you do, but some of these mishaps can't always be predicted or prevented, so don't be hard on yourself (nor on others).

Remember: Mercury loves to play practical jokes. This is his playtime. ;-) It helps to learn to laugh with him.

Mercury is retrograde in Pisces, which can put you in a very dream-like, meditative space. Logical or analytical thought may not be easy to achieve during this transit – or you might find that logic and analysis seem to ride in the slipstream of intuition. Creativity and imagination could rise spontaneously or unexpectedly...or they might seem to go underground where you can't access them at all for a while. In fact, much of your usual mental awareness could seem less than solid, reliable or accessible during this transit. On the other hand, you may find you have access to a different kind of perception and awareness during this time. Your psychic and intuitive abilities are likely to be much more sensitive now. Dreams could be more vivid, and you may float in and out of daydreams that could actually provide valuable information and insight. It's not always possible to put your life on hold for 3 weeks (while Mercury is retrograde), but it will help to take some time out to just drift and "be" during this time.

Here are the key dates of this Mercury cycle (for North American Eastern Time):

Mercury makes 3 passes of the following transits during this retrograde cycle:

Feb.18 – Sun enters Pisces (until Mar.19)  (Feb.19 in AST, NST, UK, AU)

Happy Solar Return to all Pisces! While the Sun travels through Pisces we all have a chance to attune ourselves to our intuitive, creative, spiritual and reflective nature. This can be a time when dreams may become more important, meaningful or frequent, as the unconscious swells into consciousness. It is a time to spend quality alone time with yourself away from the noisy world, so that you can tune in to the still, small voice within. This might be done through meditation, prayer or seclusion. Although not necessary to do in seclusion, you might also connect with that inner space through music, art, dance, yoga, Tai Chi or walking a labyrinth. This is a non-rational space (not necessarily the same as irrational) that emerges from the formlessness of the unconscious full of possibilities for manifestation. Pisces holds the gateway to our source of creativity and our spiritual Source. It points the way to the Great Unknown, where all life begins. Therefore, while the Sun is in Pisces, we have a chance to meditate on our relationship to this womb of creative energy. So try your hand at writing poetry. Or, try drawing or painting, especially with your non-dominant hand. Immerse yourself in a warm bath and listen to the most beautiful music you can find. Walk through a labyrinth, or walk through a forest. Take some time to just BE.

Feb.20 – Jupiter sextile Neptune (17:45 of Capricorn/Pisces)  (Feb.21 in AU)

There is great potential for a heightened sense of purpose, vision and optimism now. The wisdom and confidence of Jupiter is mixed with the surrender to the Cosmic Lifestream of Neptune. What can result is an exciting and inspiring vision of "what could be," provided you are willing to follow it up with concrete action. This transit shows you what is possible and gives you the pieces that can make it happen, but you still have to work at putting them together—kind of like having a cake mix on your pantry shelf. The challenge here is that you are combining focused beliefs and knowledge (Jupiter) with an intuitive, imaginative and spiritual experience (Neptune).

While these energies can combine well and relatively easily, there may still be a resistance to doing so because something of Neptune is always lost when we try to manifest it in some way. For instance, if you're going to pursue a dream that you have, it means taking a very personal, internalized feeling and translating it into something much more pointed and definite—an opinion, belief or judgment, which means others might challenge you, disagree with you or even judge you.

On the other hand, this can also be a time of great optimism, when things feel like they can fall into place easily if you just give them a wee push. In fact, you could feel so euphorically optimistic that it seems like you could walk through walls and any other form of resistance. Be careful not to overplay your hand, but do enjoy the renewed confidence and faith in life that you might feel. This is a great opportunity to invest some faith in your vision of "what could be" and move it a little closer to actuality. Let your imagination and wonderment guide you.

This is the first of 3 passes of this transit: Feb.20, Jul.27, Oct.12.

Feb.21 – Mars trine Uranus (03:22 of Capricorn/Taurus)  (Feb.20 in HAST)

This is a very high energy time, although not necessarily predictable or reliable. Your energy may come in spurts or in response to situations that don't normally affect you very much. You may find an upsurge of daring and confidence that seem to come out of nowhere. Or your sexual desire might suddenly come alive. This transit can inspire motivation that is spontaneous, sudden or unexpected. It might make your physical or emotional energy fluctuate or feel a bit "wired." However, it can also give a burst of courage and drive that can propel you out of a rut or inspire you to break free of limitations. Freedom, liberation and asserting your individuality are key areas that can ignite this energy. You might also find yourself involved in group activities, possibly in a leadership role or in a way that your ideas have a greater effect than usual on others.

Feb.21 – Mars square Chiron (03:29 of Capricorn/Aries)  (Feb.22 in AU)

It may be time to confront issues in your life that involve how/why you get hurt by others, how you yourself hurt others, and how healing can take place in either of these situations. Your awareness of this may due to a conflict in your life, but this can be a valuable learning experience for you, more-so than usual. Part of the problem may be that you need to tread your own path but are avoiding this for whatever reasons – perhaps circumstances compel you to satisfy others' expectations, or perhaps you are still struggling to muster the courage to find and walk your own path. Whatever the reasons, this transit may give you a push that will help to steer you in a healing direction, possibly by showing you how and why the path you have been on does not lead to where you want to go. If you start to feel overwhelmed, take some time out from the stress to get re-centered and grounded.

Feb.22 – Sun sextile Uranus (03:24 of Pisces/Taurus)  (Feb.23 in AU)

You are more open than usual to spontaneity, surprises and "flying by the seat of your pants!" Your sense of humour and fun are more finely tuned during this transit, as is your ability to break out of old outworn habits. It's a great time to try new things and experiment with something that's out of character for you. In fact, it may be surprising how easy it is to break out of your usual routine...so much so that it's good to be careful not to be too reckless under this transit. Just have fun pushing the envelope! You may also find you want things to be spontaneous and new and out-of-the-ordinary so much that it's hard not to feel restless and dissatisfied with ordinary life right now. But remember that trying to plan spontaneity defeats the purpose of the exercise. And if you are hungering for something new but can't seem to find something satisfying, try digging a little deeper to see what is driving that hunger from inside you. You could find surprising answers.
